Council member Laura Mackey nominated Renee Franklin for Mayor Pro Tem. “I have good faith that she'll lead us properly in your absence,” Mackey said, addressing Mayor Dittrich. “She'll keep us in line and make sure we follow the rules, and if she doesn't know how to do something, she'll ask questions. And I'd also like to say Dr. Marshall has done a wonderful job in the meetings I've seen him take over for you, and I think it's time to take something off of his plate and let Laura go ahead and step in.” Dustin Phillips then re-nominated Dr. Larry Marshall for Mayor Pro Tem. There was a motion to close nominations, which passed unanimously, and the nomination of Marshall passed 5-2. The next item was to approve the finance report for the period end- ing Oct. 31, 2020. For the general fund, revenues for the month of October and year to date were $1,170,642.00 while expenditures were $1,369,205.00. “We're going to start seeing property taxes coming in heavily in December and January,” Finance Director Rick Overgaard said. “Then you'll see the revenues far exceed the expenditures.” The budget was approved unanimously. Benbrook finished the season with a 5-1 record in district competi- tion, and coach Cody Slater said that in spite of the loss in the opening round of the playoffs, he is pleased with what his team was able to accomplish in 2020. “I am happy that we made another run to the playoffs, but on the other hand, we are not satisfied with not advancing past the first round,” Slater said. “We look forward to getting back to work in the off season after our Thanksgiving break to start working towards a district championship and advancing in the state playoffs in 2021.” In basketball, the Benbrook girls lost to Lake Worth by a score of 44-35 last Friday to move to 1-3 on the season. The Benbrook boys basketball team improved to 3-0 on the season following a 68-33 win over Wichita Falls on Friday night. Western Hills High School Over at Western Hills, the Lady Cougars lost a non-district match to the Venus by a score of 72-21 last Tuesday, and the boys team lost 79-78 in overtime to Everman on Nov. 14.

CLASSIFIEDS Beginning with George Washington, manypresidents declared their own days of thanksgiv-ing before Abraham Lincoln made it an officialholiday in 1863 and Franklin D. Rooseveltsigned legislation in 1941 designating the fourthThursday in November as the federalThanksgiving Day holiday. Reports of turkeys as gifts to American pres-idents can be traced back to the 1870s. Turkey presentations at the White Housebecame national news in the 1920s withaccounts of turkeys taking exciting cross-coun-try trips to the White House and arriving dressedfor the occasion in goggles and sweaters, insidetheir decorated coops. John F. Kennedy was the first to unofficially

pardon a turkey by telling attendees at the pres-entation, “Let’s keep him going.” Patricia Nixon sent gifted turkeys to OxonHill Children’s Farm, while Rosalynn Cartersent some to a Evans Farm Inn to live in a minia-ture zoo. In 1989, the formalities of pardoning aturkey became a White House Thanksgiving tra-dition when George H.W. Bush remarked, “Letme assure you, and this fine tom turkey, that hewill not end up on anyone's dinner table, not thisguy -- he's granted a Presidential pardon as ofright now -- and allow him to live out his dayson a children's farm not far from here.” Since then, each year the president has par-doned a turkey or two in an official ceremony.

The city of Benbrook hosted an E-Waste Disposal and Document Shredding event behindBenbrook Dutch Branch Park on Saturday, Nov. 21. Several Benbrook residents drove over to line up and safely dispose of their items.

As we approach the holiday season, resi-dents may be curious to know if the City ofBenbrook is hosting the usual celebrations. Given continued concerns about exposureto COVID-19, and the significant lead time andfinancial commitment required to host events, city leaders have decided to suspend the annualChristmas Tree Lighting and Fireworks Showthat typically occurs early December. Also suspended will be pictures with Santaand Mrs. Claus. While these fun events oftenbring us physically together as a community,we know that real community togethernessoccurs in our homes and neighborhoods eachday when we pull together, lend a hand, andgenerously give of ourselves in meeting thechallenges of this difficult year. This year, like no other, Benbrook resi-dents, businesses, and organizations haveadjusted in creative and helpful ways to faceunprecedented demands. In addition, the Cityof Benbrook and our community partner organ-izations have adapted to new, safer ways ofserving our community, remaining accessible, and continuing our commitment to exceptionalcustomer service. As we celebrate the holidaysthis year, let’s remember that Benbrook works

together, even when we’re apart. “This season, I encourage our residents toremember that we can still celebrate together inspirit,” says Benbrook Mayor Jerry Dittrich.“Let’s keep the celebration alive in our hearts, and hopefully we will soon come togetheragain as a community. On behalf of your citycouncil, we wish you safe and happy holidays!” Though we won’t be gathering, residentsmay enjoy the community Christmas Tree inDutch Branch Park (behind the YMCA), theholiday banners along BenbrookBoulevard/U.S. 377 coming soon, and thelighted trees on the south end of the boulevard. And, in the spirit of coming together in times ofneed, look for details on the Fire Departmentholiday food drive coming soon.

CLASSIFIEDS In what has most certainly been one of themost unusual years in memory, the nation willmark Thanksgiving once again on this fourthThursday in November. It is part of a long tradi-tion that has spanned many generations, includinghistorical parallels in Texas. Perhaps the most notable Thanksgiving feastwas that of the Pilgrims at the Plymouth Colonyon Nov. 22, 1621. It had been a difficult year forthe English settlers who had arrived inMassachusetts the previous November. TheWampanoag tribe, which controlled most ofMassachusetts and Rhode Island, made offers offriendship to the Pilgrims, sharing their food as thecolonists struggled through the winter and thentaught them about raising crops in the area. After a bountiful harvest that fall, the Pilgrimsdecided to organize a feast to give thanks to Godfor their good fortune. In the spirit of gratitude, theWampanoags were invited to join them in whatbecame a three-day feast. The meal was quite dif-ferent than the usual fare seen on American tablestoday. Using what was available locally, they ateswans, seals, deer, fish, and lobsters. Such celebrations to give thanks to God werenot unusual among Europeans in general duringthat time period. By the time of the famous 1621Thanksgiving at the Plymouth Colony, other feaststo give thanks had occurred already in other partsof the nation. In 1541, Spanish conquistador FranciscoVazquez de Coronado had a special ThanksgivingMass held for him and his men not far from whatis now Amarillo and the Palo Duro Canyon in cel-ebration of their good fortune. In 1565, Spanish conquistadores led by PedroMenendez de Avile at the settlement of St.Augustine, Florida, held a special Roman Catholicmass and later a feast to give thanks to God fortheir safe arrival. They invited members of thelocal Timucua tribe to join them. In 1598, more than 500 Spanish colonists ledby Don Juan de Onate arrived at San Elizario, nearmodern-day El Paso, and had a special day to givethanks for their own good fortune. This has ledsome to claim San Elizario as the site of the FirstThanksgiving. As for the Pilgrims, the Plymouth colonistsand the tribes did not repeat the occasion in 1622.In 1623, after a difficult year of droughts thatthreatened the crops, late rains rescued the har-vest. As it proved to be much more bountiful thanexpected, the colonists again had a celebration togive thanks that November. Tragically, relationswith the Wampanoag tribe deteriorated in theensuing decades with the initial gestures of friend-ship forgotten and the tribe shattered by war.

Nevertheless, New England residents would con-tinue to have periodic Thanksgiving observancesin the years afterward, often organized by the localchurches. In spite of a few instances of Thanksgivingobservances in the South, it did not catch on as anannual observance as it did in New England. Thetradition, however, spread northward into theBritish colonies in Canada, where observancesremained mostly local until the late 1800s. It wasestablished as an official national holiday inCanada in 1957, and because of Canada’s shortergrowing season, on the second Monday inOctober. New York became the first state to declareThanksgiving a holiday, starting in 1817. Effortswere made to make it a national holiday in the1820s, led by noted writer and educator SarahJosepha Hale of New Hampshire. Up until theCivil War, the date of Thanksgiving was left to thestates and made more of a local observance. Datesfor Thanksgiving ranged from early Octoberthrough the end of December. In 1863, Secretary of State William H. Sewardconvinced President Abraham Lincoln to make ita national holiday on the last Thursday inNovember. Lincoln announced the holiday as aday to give thanks to God for the blessings thenation had and added that all Americans shouldremember the widows and orphans the war creat-ed. In 1941, the holiday officially became thefourth Thursday in November from that pointonward. President Harry Truman started the tradi-tion of pardoning one turkey for Thanksgiving in1947. Other nations have also adoptedThanksgiving, inspired by the American example.Liberia, which was founded by former Americanslaves, marks Thanksgiving as the first Thursdayin November, dating back to 1821. Brazil madethe fourth Thursday in November itsThanksgiving holiday in 1966 after their ambassa-dor to the United States saw the American holidayfirsthand. Turkey sales have topped $1 billion annuallyin the past few years. Many churches and commu-nities still continue with the initial spirit ofThanksgiving by reaching out to the poor andhomeless with food drives and communityThanksgiving meals prepared and served by vol-unteers. Though the coronavirus pandemic may damp-en many travel plans and gatherings out of precau-tions for public health, millions of Americans willstill pause to consider what they are thankful for.
