Helping Customers Realize Business Potential ThroughBusiness Process and IT Transformation

Introduction

Enterprise resources planning (ERP) and customer relationship management (CRM) applications— help instreamlining the operations and increase the efficiencies. Today, companies realize that the information locked inenterprise and legacy systems is incredibly valuable. Accessing and understanding this information improves acompany’s ability to manage costs and grow margins. However, the information must be complete, current, andadequate to answer critical business questions. And most organizations struggle to access and extract the right datafrom multiple systems and to deliver insight to the right person at the right time. Analytic applications can be theanswer to the data access and insight delivery challenges.

Business Intelligence Benefits:

Share information efficiently and effectively with people across your organization. BI makes it easy for everyone-from decision-makers to functional teams- to access and analyze up-to-date information anytime, anywhere.Everyone throughout the company can make better decisions, faster.

Empower your people. Providing employees with access to analytical data that is readily available andunderstandable allows them to work more effectively and support the overall business strategy.

Simplify collaboration and sharing and improve alignment with a single source for accurate financial andoperational information. Having a single, central location allows you to monitor your key performance indicators(KPIs), access reports, analyze your data, and share documents. All of the functional areas are aligned to articulatestrategies, set objectives, and monitor the organization’s performance so you can make better informed and timelydecisions that support your overall business strategy.

Gain insights to understand and analyze your business performance and opportunities on a deeper level. Analyzeand evaluate information that is more accessible and easy to interact with to make strategic and tactical decisions.

Deliver meaningful analysis and reporting. Readily track and analyze KPIs against key business goals to gain a betterunderstanding of how your business is performing today and not when it’s too late to impact performance.

Have a solution with the scalability and flexibility to grow and change as your organization does. Many companiesrely solely on the most widely used BI tool, the Excel spreadsheet. While Excel offers many useful features such asgraphs, charts, and pivot tables which assist in decision-making, it doesn’t scale to your business. Also, compilingdata from multiple, disparate databases are time-consuming and are prone to errors. However, Excel is still a keycomponent of a total BI solution.

Oracle Data Integrator - The Tool with EL-T thinkingOracle Data Integrator (ODI) is a best-of-breed data integration platform focusedon fast bulk data movement and handling complex data transformations. The 11gversion of ODI pushes the state of the art technology even further ahead of therest of the industry. Oracle has invested in the following key areas for ODI 11g:

ODI reduces the time spent in learning the product as well and helps inincreasing developer productivity

ODI eliminates the need for a standalone ETL server and proprietaryengine. It leverages the power of a relational database like Oracle forprocessing. Through this, ODI leverages set-based operations and as aresult provides much higher performance.

ODI also helps in providing a certain level of data quality without using anexternal data quality engine. This is achieved by using the data integrityrules and constraints that are defined on the target data warehouseand/or in the ODI tool models.

ODI also supports heterogeneous databases other than Oracle such asTeradata, DB2, etc. It also supports other technologies like web services, flat files, XML, etc.

ODI supports all platforms, hardware and operating systems with thesame software

ODI is cost-effective, as it reduces the initial hardware setup cost anddoes not require an ETL server and ETL engine. Also, the reduced learningtime and increased developer productivity decreases the labor costs ofthe project.

Oracle Data Integrator is fullyintegrated with the Oracletechnology stack, includingDatabase, Exadata, BusinessIntelligence, and Applications.

EL-T Vs ETL

Objective

This will provide an in depth understanding and appreciation of the relative strengths and weaknesses of the twodifferent approaches of ETL and ELT in data warehouse design and implementation.

Data Management and Business Intelligence

Business Intelligence is not a technology, or technologies. It is the process by which data is turned into informationupon which informed business decisions can be made to effect change. It is therefore a philosophy. To achieve a DMand BI implementation, two stages are required in the process (excepting any analysis which is part of each).

Format the data – This is the process of producing the data warehouse. It involves getting the data from the source andtransforming into an appropriate format from which the output can be derived.

Produce the output – This is the process of taking the transformed data and presenting it to the user in a way thatprovides information.

Stages in Warehouse ProcessingIt is generally accepted in informed DM and BI circles that there are three stages in the process of building a datawarehouse. However, the order in which these stages are performed can have a fundamental effect on the meaning ofthese processes and also the overall outcome of the BI solution.

The loading of data into the warehouse

The transformation of the source data into a format relevant to the solution

The process by which data is extracted from the data source

Stages in Warehouse ProcessingIt is generally accepted in informed DM and BI circles that there are three stages in the process of building a datawarehouse. However, the order in which these stages are performed can have a fundamental effect on the meaning ofthese processes and also the overall outcome of the BI solution.

EL-T Vs ETL

ETL – Extract, Transform and Load

This approach to data warehouse development is the traditional and widely accepted approach. The following diagramillustrates each of the individual stages in the process.

Development Time Designing from the output backwards ensures that onlydata relevant to the solution is extracted and processed, potentially reducingdevelopment, extract, and processing overhead; and therefore time.

Targeted data Due to the targeted nature of the load process, the warehousecontains only data relevant to the presentation. Administration OverheadReduced warehouse content simplifies the security regime implemented andhence the administration overhead

Tools Availability The prolific number of tools available that implement ETLprovides flexibility of approach and the opportunity to identify a mostappropriate tool. The proliferation of tools has lead to a competitivefunctionality war, which often results in loss of maintainability.

Flexibility Targeting only relevant data for output means that any futurerequirements, that may need data that was not included in the original design, will need to be added to the ETL routines. Due to nature of tight dependencybetween the routines developed, this often leads to a need for fundamentalre-design and development. As a result this increases the time and costsinvolved.

Hardware Most third party tools utilize their own engine to implement the ETLprocess. Regardless of the size of the solution this can necessitate theinvestment in additional hardware to implement the tool’s ETL engine. SkillsInvestment The use of third party tools to implement ETL processes compelsthe learning of new scripting languages and processes.

Learning Curve Implementing a third party tool that uses foreign processes andlanguages results in the learning curve that is implicit in all technologies new toan organization and can often lead to following blind alleys in their use due tolack of experience.

ELT – Extract, Load and Transform

Whilst this approach to the implementation of a warehouse appears on the surface to be similar to ETL, it differs in anumber of significant ways. The following diagram illustrates the process.

ELT Methodology

The following section describes the ELT (Extract, Load and Transform) design approach for the reporting architecture.

Oracle ODI (Oracle Data Integrator) is one of the tools available in the market that can be used for the purposes ofperforming this functionality.

Extraction

The goal of the extract phase is to convert the data from various source systems into a single format which isappropriate for transformation processing. An intrinsic part of the extract process involves the parsing of extracteddata, resulting in a check if the data meets an expected pattern or structure. Where the data does not meet theexpected pattern, the data may be rejected entirely or in part.

The reporting architecture in the analytical system will generally use a daily, batch-driven extract process that willidentify and extract any delta records from the source systems. A major reason for taking this approach is theconsiderations around the volume of data to be included in the daily extract, especially for high usage source systemssuch as the financial systems, Oracle EBS, Oracle ERP etc.

In incorporating a delta extract, the overall time required to complete the entire ELT process will thus be greatlyreduced.

Load and Transformation

There are a number of methods that allow for data to be stored in a DWH environment, either via an ETL (Extract,Transform and then Load) or via the ELT (Extract, Load and then Transform). Either approach will extract the data in aparticular format and store it into an end state repository. The difference however between ETL and ELT is that theformer transforms the data before loading it into the DWH, and the latter will load or store the data, then transform it.This section describes which methodology will be employed for the analytical system reporting architecture.

Using the ODI tool, the Extract Load – Transform (EL-T) strategy is to be employed in the ANALYTICAL system reportingarchitecture for extract through to load functionality of reportable data. A number of reasons for employing an EL-T asopposed to an ETL approach are listed below:

1. Reduced overhead on ETL engine - the data transformation step of the ETL process is by far the most compute-intensive operation in the process, and is performed entirely by the proprietary ETL engine on a dedicatedserver. The ETL engine performs data transformations (and sometimes data quality checks) on a row-by-rowbasis, and hence, can easily become the bottleneck in the overall process whereas in EL-T approach, thetransform doesn’t require a separate engine (as it is operated directly on the target) and thus allows for fasterquery execution.

2. Reduced use of network resource – Using the ETL approach the data must be moved over the network twice –once between the source system and the ETL server to staging, and again between the ETL server and thetarget data warehouse whereas in EL-T approach the data is typically moved across the network only once –thus reduced load on the network infrastructure.

The figure shown below compares the traditional ETL and modern EL-T approaches:

Figure: Traditional ETL vs. Modern EL-T

ELT Strengths

Utilize Existing Hardware In implementing ELT as a warehouse build process, theinherent tools provided with the database engine can be used. Alternatively, the vastmajority of the third party ELT tools available employ the use of the database engine’scapability and hence the ELT process is run on the same hardware as the databaseengine underpinning the data warehouse, using the existing hardware deployed.

Utilize Existing Skill sets By using the functionality provided by the database engine, the existing investments in database skills are re-used to develop the warehouse. Nonew skills need be learned and the full weight of the experience in developing theengine’s technology is utilized, further reducing the cost and risk in the developmentprocess.

OBIEE and ODI Integration

No Separate ETL engine As per the EL-T methodology, since the transformations are done at the target databaseonly which would leverage the database capabilities hence there is no need for another transformation engineof the tool and hence the transformation overhead is not there in EL-T.

Faster, More efficient Since data is first moved to the target database before transformation in EL-T, the loadinto final tables after transformation is the faster in comparison to ETL as the data is on the same server after thetransformation. Hence, NO overhead of data migration from transformation engine to the final target tables.

Best in Breed performance in Bulk Load Due to the fact that in EL-T the data is first migrated and transformedlater, it becomes evident the performance of the bulk load when there is NO or minimal transformation is thebest in breed.

Minimized dependencies on the source systems Once data is extracted the dependency on the source systemsis removed and hence there is lesser downtime for the source systems in a production environment.

ELT Weakness

Against the Norm ELT is an emergent approach to data warehouse design anddevelopment. Whilst it has proven itself many times over through its abundant usein implementations throughout the world, it does require a change in mentality anddesign approach against traditional methods. Though some principles remain trueto all approaches, ELT is different in many ways. To get the best from an ELTapproach requires an open mind.

Tools Availability Being an emergent technology approach, ELT suffers from alimited availability of tools. Oracle Data Integrator (ODI) is the only EL-T toolavailable in the market today.
