Conversion to multiple double
tracks provides the following two
benefits.
4
Additional trains cannot be operated during peak rush hour periods.
Time is required for local trains to wait for express or semi-express trains to
arrive or overtake.
Since express or semi-express trains cannot overtake local trains, their speed decreases.
The number of trains can be increased, alleviating
congestion.
Local trains no longer have to wait for express or semi-express trains to arrive or overtake, resulting in
shortening of travel times.
Since express and semi-express trains travel on a separate track, their progress isn’t impeded by trains traveling
ahead, resulting in shortening of travel times.

3 Project Benefits Realized to Date
■ Shortening of travel times
Sections already completed are showing an increase in passengers
carried exceeding the Odakyu Line average.
A certain degree of success has been achieved in shortening travel times
compared to before the start of the multiple double track project.
By March 2013, 39 railroad crossings had been eliminated between Higashi-Kitazawa and Izumi-Tamagawa.
⇒ Benefits realized include alleviation of traffic congestion, improved railway and road safety, and improved access
to stations.
5
On the other hand, since construction in the Shimo-Kitazawa area is incomplete, train frequency cannot be substantially increased, and the benefits are limited at present.
