ANAEROBIC DIGESTION

Anaerobic digestion is a natural process where microorganisms break down organic waste materials (biomass) in the absence of oxygen.

Inputs:Agricultural Biomass (manure, crop waste, energy crops)Food Waste & FOG (fats, oils and grease)Municipal Waste (biosolids)

Products:Renewable Energy – Natural Gas, Electricity, Motor Vehicle Fuel (CNG)Animal Bedding, Peat Alternative, & CompostConcentrated fertilizer that can be removed from the watershed

Solutions: that Address the Problem

Approaches that have been proposed react to the effect of the problem but do not provide a long term solution for the cause of the problem.

Alum Treatment: $$$$ - may temporarily diminish algae

Dredging: $$$$ - may temporarily diminish algae

Hauling Manure: $$$ - addresses the cause of the problem, but is an unaffordable perpetual expense for the agricultural community.

Anaerobic digestion is a self-funding solution that addresses one of the problems – manure mismanagement.

quasar is integrating nutrient removal technology into the anaerobic digestion process to:• Remove nitrogen and phosphorous from the system’s effluent • Concentrate these nutrients as a saleable fertilizer product that can be

Solutions: that pay for themselves

Anaerobic digesters address a problem while creating a new revenue stream for farms:

Revenue from –Renewable energy sales (energy & RECs)Tipping fees (from food processors)

Financial Savings – Solid byproduct can be used as animal bedding

With Grants –Simple Payback of 3 – 6 years

Without Grants –Simple Payback of 6 – 10 years

Sizing a Project

W hich system size fits the project?

quasar ecoFARMsystems come in 3 standard sizes: F330, F550, F825. The daily through-put and energy generation of a system will vary based on the biomass recipe.

* Note: Actual values will vary regionally. Based on an assumption of $0.075 per kWh for electric and $10.00 per MMBtu for natural gas.
