The members of the 2004 BAGC Executive Committee wish all of you an early Shuvo Naba Barsha. We are all looking forward to the Banga Sanskriti Dibas not only for the opportu-nity for a social gathering (adda), but also since it signals the com-ing of spring. But before we jump forward into spring, let me thank all of you who braved the extremely cold weather on Janu-ary 31, 2004 to celebrate Saras-wati Puja. The whole day’s activities went fairly close to schedule and we left the school, all cleaned up, just a few minutes after 10:00pm. As a matter of fact, the Puja started so much on time that it ended a bit earlier than scheduled and a few people missed offering Anjali. We apologize to those who missed the Anjali. We thank all of you who volunteered your services and helped make the Saraswati Puja a success. At this time we offer apologies to the audience and the performers for the failure of the cordless microphone system dur-ing the Dating Game skit. Our research after the failure reveals that a new UHF TV station oper-ating on Channel 17 in the Elgin/Aurora area is causing severe

interference on certain micro-phone frequencies. Unfortunately, three of our eight wireless micro-phones that day were tuned to fre-quencies affected by UHF Chan-nel 17. We need to do more re-search and possibly replace some of the microphones as necessary. If you live in the Elgin/Streamwood area, and can receive Channel 17 on your TV by an an-tenna, please inform us so that we can learn more about the station’s operating range and timings. Our next event is the Banga Sanskriti Dibas, where we celebrate the Bengali New Year and the Rabindra/Nazrul Jayanti, all rolled into one. The details of the event are provided in this newsletter. The Cultural Sub-Committee has made a special ef-fort to involve the youngest mem-bers of BAGC, nine years and be-low. We have also invited a very promising vocal artist, Ms. Suran-jana Das from Kolkata. We hope to see all of you at the Elgin Com-munity High School. #

Saraswati pooja is on the 5th day

of the moon,

For the celebration we get up

very soon.

Saraswati is the Goddess of

knowledge,

She’ll get you into a good col-

lege.

During the pooja we wear yel-

low,

Before Anjali we can’t even eat

Jell-O.

But even if I get a B+ on my test,

I will still love you, you are the

best.

At the Saraswati Puja several things were lost and even more found. A wal-let, a credit card and a cell phone were found and returned to the rightful own-ers. However, no one has come for-ward to claim a pair of eye glasses that were found in the auditorium and a pair of BAGC coffee mugs in a gift bag that

were found in the cafeteria. If either of the items belong to you please call (630) 910-0460. On the lost side, if you found a children’s paperback book titled “Hnashi Khushi” in the cafeteria please call (630) 910-0460.

The Matchmaker Game

Chatterji, as the game show host, entertained us with his wit and carefree acting. Three Patris, or prospective brides, acted by Antara Deb, Dibyava Ghosh, and Lynley Chatterjee, were effective in stereo-typical roles. I am sure that many young men in our community were able to relate to the dilemma of Ashok Dastidar as the Bachelor. On the other hand, many mothers could empathize with the Bachelor’s mother, ably acted by Sarmistha Banerjee. Kaberi Chakraborty, Shouvik Dutta, Ahona Mazumdar, Anindita Mukherji and Nina Palit participated in TV commercials. Sara Chatterjee acted as the co-host of the show. Such a production cannot be staged without substan-tial helps from many other BAGC

The Matchmaker Game, a comedy drama, presented by young Bengali professionals was a major attraction of the cultural program during the 2004 BAGC Saraswati Puja. The hilarious script explored almost realistic, yet comical, situa-tions about matchmaking routines for second generation Indian men and women in USA. Nearly three years in making, this is a collabora-tive project involving many. The presentation delighted the BAGC audience, both young and old. Formatted as a matchmak-ing game show, similar to popular dating game shows on TV, it dealt with conflicts, often funny, that oc-cur between parents and children. Although the characters were inten-tionally made stereotypical, the au-dience could empathize with possi-bilities of nontraditional choices made by men and women of second generation. Incorporating TV pro-gram style comical commercials was a nice touch. These commer-cials provided oblique glimpses into daily life and attitudes of Ben-galis in this country. The drama was carefully directed and produced by Ananya Roy. Ananya also took care of the music for the program. Ronon

members. Make-up and hair were done by Bijoya Sengupta and Anonya Majumdar, stage man-agement by Alak Bhattacharya and Anjan Roy, and lighting by Sumit Roy. Other individuals par-ticipating in this collaborative project were Jayeeta Mukherjee, Kumarika Banerjee, soma Das and Abhijit Bhattacharya. At the conclusion of the program, it was interesting to note surprising reactions of parents. In spite of general perception to the contrary, some mothers felt that stereotypical ideals for traditional brides may not be entirely appli-cable in this day and age. #

The Facility Sub-Committee thanks Sumit Roy (Bartlett), Jyoti Mondal, Pradeepta Bhattacharya, Aian Mazum-der and Sanatan Datta for helping to load and/or unload the truck. The Sound and Light Sub-Committee and

NOTE OF THANKS (contd.) the Cultural Sub-Committee thank Sumit Roy (Naperville), Alak Bhat-tacharyya, John Jarvis, Pradeepta Bhattacharya, Subhashish Ghosh, Jyoti Mondal, Shouvik Dutta, Saunak Basu, Dipankar Bandyopadhyay, and Pratik Chakraborty for helping with the lights, sound and erecting the sets and

Agneesh Banerjee for acting as the MC. There were others we know who helped out discreetly, without being noticed, without drawing atten-tion. We thank all of you who helped out. Pardon us if we failed to

mention your name here. #

Annual consulting with a physi-cian for your health is very im-portant. It is also important to visit a dentist twice a year for preventive maintenance. We have realized these after coming to this country. They were not very important while we were in India. Similarly your financial health is very important to every family. It needs an annual check up too. Back in India we were hardly involved in mutual fund or stock trading. Our retirement fund used to be maintained ei-ther by provident fund or post office deposits with fixed rate of return. But here we are involved in 401K or personal account where we make our decision. This is like getting an antibiotic without a prescription from a drug store. Are you happy with the return or did you make cor-rect decisions? If not, then it is time for you to call a financial advisor. Financial advisors can assist you in determining your specific fi-nancial needs and objectives. In addition, they can: 1. keep your financial plan cur-rent as your financial situation changes; 2. evaluate and describe for you various investment opportuni-ties; 3. review the asset mix of your portfolio; 4. monitor the performance of your investments; 5. suggest revisions when neces-sary; and

6. research investments designed to help you reach your objec-tives. How do you choose a financial advisor? A recommendation from a friend or relative is a good way to find a financial advisor. You can also contact professional organiza-tions or licensing organizations to identify candidates you might like to interview. Look for a company with longevity, a good track record and a good reputa-tion. Ask your advisor lots of questions. Find out if the advisor has experience helping clients with concerns and resources similar to your own. Ask what information you need to bring to the meeting. While meeting with your advi-sor, ask the following four ques-tions: * What are your qualifica-tions and experience? Many financial advisors will provide their potential clients with a copy of their resumes and a packet of information about the services they offer. Clients should know whether an advisor has professional designations or affiliations. Consider if they are individual practitioners or are part of a larger organization. * What services do you offer? Find out in what areas your advi-

sor specializes -- tax planning, estate planning, retirement plan-ning, insurance products, etc. * Will you be the only per-son working with me? Many financial advisors some-times employ assistants or work with partners -- determine if you are comfortable dealing with other members of the planning team. * How much do you typi-cally charge? Money is coming out of your pocket -- therefore, it is a good idea to find out how your finan-cial advisor is compensated. Ad-visors may be compensated by fees you pay directly to them, fees paid for asset management or by commission for products sold. The method of compensa-tion is less important than the disclosure of conflicts of interest and the quality of the advice given. #
