BENI SAF RO DESALINATION PLANT
INTER-AFRICA DESALINATION ROUND TABLE ALGERIA –SOUTH AFRICA ORAN-ETHEKWINI MUNICIPALITY
DURBAN 6th FEBRUARY 2017
Algeria is located in North Africa
Area : 2.381.741 km²
Population : 38 700 000 Habitant
Density : 16 hab./km
Climate in Algeria :
1- 4% Mediterranean Climate
- 350 mm ( Average in West).
- 1000 mm ( Average in East).
2- 9% Semi arid Climate : same with point 1
3- 87% Arid and dry climate run/year < 20 mm.
I- GENERAL INTRODUCTION TO ALGERIA
II- WATER POTENTIAL IN ALGERIA
The Water potential resources in Algeria is estimated to 18 Billion cubic meter
by year divided by area :
North 12,5 B.M3/An :
10.0 B.M3 Flowing
2.5 B.M3 underground resources
South 5,5 B.M3/An :

II- PARK WATER IN ALGERIA
The water production facilities in Algeria are diversified across regions and the
existing water potential :
1- Conventional water :
Groundwater Resources: Renewable and Fossil Superficial resources : Dams
2- No Conventional water
Seawater desalination
Wastewater reuse for irrigation.
Recently, the exploitation of fossil groundwater sources has taken a different scale to meet the demand of drink water in the southern regions. Example du transfer Ain Salah / Tamanrasset :
48 drilling,
750 km x 2 lines,
six pumping station ,
Demineralization station with capacity for 100.000 m³/d
Conventional water - Underground sources-
Renewable groundwater was essential water resource for drink water and irrigation in Algeria before exhaustion caused by : Aridity; Overexploitation of aquifers, proliferation of illegal drilling,
More than 70.000 drilling operation.
II- PARK WATER IN ALGERIA
Currently, the Algerian’s Dams park consists of 70 Dams with storage capacity
more or less of 7.4 billion meter cubic.
In 2017, after the completion of ongoing
projects, the park will reach 84 Dams with storage
capacity of 8.4 billion meter cubic.
Example :
Beni Haroune is the famous in Algeria with
1 Billion Meter cubic of capacity. (Realized by Grupo ACS)
II- PARK WATER IN ALGERIA
Conventional water - flowing sources-
Currently 102 wastewater reuse plants are in operation in Algeria with a total
processing capacity of 350 Million cubic meter/ year.
After the completion of ongoing projects, the number of sewage
treatment plant will reach 278 units for a total capacity of 1.2 bM3/ year.
Example :
EL KERMA plant in Oran :
- Capacity : 270.000 M3 /d
- Destined to Irrigation
Water exclusively for Irrigation
No Conventional Water - Wastewater reuse -
II- PARK WATER IN ALGERIA
WEX : February 29th to March 2nd 2016
Following the drought beginning 2000, the option of desalination has become a necessity in Algeria, especially in the West.
Algeria adopted two types of seawater desalination programs:
1- Installation of small plant capacity 2500-5000 M3/d since 2000 2- Built plant desalination with capacity more than 100.000 M3/d since 2005
Desalination plant park consists : - 23 small plant with a total capacity: 67 500 M3/d - 11 desalination plant with a total capacity of 2.3 M.M3 / d
Destined exclusivity to drinkable water

IV- Positive Impact of Seawater Plant in the Area
IMPACT IN AGRICULTURE ACTIVITY :
Indirectly, the plant have a positive impact on the Agriculture Sector .
HOW ???
1)- Using DAM’S water just for irrigation;
2)- Decision to invest in wastewater reuse for irrigation :
- Actually, commissioning 03 wastewater reuse plants in the
Area, and 03 others plants are in construction.
Objectif to reach :
13 MM3 / year for 1.300 h perimeter of irrigation
IV- Positive Impact of Seawater Plant in the Area
The desalination plant is actively involved in university
education in the west of Algeria.
HOW ???
1. Students of different specialties do their practical
internships at the plant
2. Signed an agreement with the Oran’s Engineer School to
create new specialties of engineer in Sea Water
Desalination .
3. Sponsor relationship between Oran's Engineer School
and Alicante’s university for studies the brine
THE FIRST PROMOTION OF DESALINATION ENGENNER WILL
BE OUTPUT THIS YEAR
