Bentleigh Cricket Club - Our Profile

Bentleigh Cricket Club was established in August 1909 and in season 2017/2018, we celebrated our 108th season.

Our aim is to foster an active participation in sport (cricket) for junior and senior players of all ages and gender, while providing a responsible and enjoyable social environment for members, families, and supporters.

We currently have five senior teams, eight junior teams and run the successful Milo In2 Cricket program and T20 Blast program (one of the largest in the region).

Our seniors are affiliated with the Cricket Southern Bayside (CSB) and the Mercantile Cricket associations (MCA) with our top three Senior teams playing in a two-day competition on Saturdays and our Masters and lower grades playing in one-day competitions on Sundays. All senior teams play on turf.

Our juniors are affiliated with SECA and are comprised of U16’s, U14’s, U12’s and Rookies.

Our main ground is Bentleigh Recreation Reserve located at Arthur St Bentleigh (behind the Bentleigh RSL), with our second ground at Centenary Park Oval 2, located at Bignell Rd, East Bentleigh. Our juniors play at Duncan Mackinnon Reserve and Victory Park, while our Milo In2 Cricket and T20 Blast Programs run on a Friday night at our main ground in Bentleigh.

We welcome players of all ages, gender and skill, and encourage anyone to come down and be a part of what has been an amazing Club for more than 100 years.

Presidents’ Report

The 2017/2018 has been a very rewarding season for everyone in the club, not just the seniors, or members of the successful members of the Premiership TEAM. Rewarding for all the hard work and effort that goes on at a community-based club, the smallest thing that people do assisting, whether that is it at training, in the club rooms, on game day or coming down and supporting all TEAMS. It is what makes a club great and we have these people amongst us, setting a great example for the current and future members of Bentleigh. On

behalf of the committee and executive I thank you all for the great support around the club and making Bentleigh CC what it is today.

The day in the rooms at South Caulfield after the game will stay etched in my mind forever. After speaking to the players and turning around to address what I thought was a handful of supporters, to see a sea of Bentleigh people was one of the most special moments of my cricket life. Congratulations to Rob and his merry men, it shows what a champion team can produce, time and time again. This group of young DEMONS showed a very strong and special spirit and bond. At no stage were they ever beaten, even when the odds were totally against them. It is this type of bond and spirit that makes clubs great as well, so embrace it with both arms and all you have. I’ll leave Rob to expand on the various aspects and performances throughout the year. However, I will indulge myself with congratulating Jeffrey Keyt on a great career at Bentleigh that started when about 13 years old and a premiership in the 3rd Eleven. He went on to play in a further two 1st Eleven flags. The stats will not show the value he was to the club, only his team mates and astute cricket followers would recognize. All the very best for the future and I sincerely trust that you will not be lost to the Bentleigh family, and drift away as many previous past players have.

A special mention to Wayne Myers and congratulations on the first up Premiership. I believe Wayne has allot of cricket knowledge to impart and I believe our Junior coaches and players will be the benefactors of this.

With premiership now in the 2nd and 1st Eleven teams in the past two seasons, we must ensure that we keep up the pressure to bring through our Juniors and provide the support and resources. The juniors are the future of this great club, that we all love. The growth in Juniors and Cricket Blast (previously known as Milo and T20 Blast) hasn’t happened by accident. To name a few (apologies to all others) the likes of Steve McGinness, Mick Foot, Steve Grogan, Chris Meister, Matt Thorp and many, many other coaches, parents and senior players have played a massive part in where our Juniors are today. Please don’t stand still, in fact I know this won’t happen as Mick Foot has developed documents for various roles and plans to go forward. David McNamara has his DNA all over this as well.

This only emphasises the importance of producing our own home -grown cricketers – as we need to nurture, guide and develop these young men, a major emphasis of the Club now and will be in the future. The balancing act, between overseas and local talent, will be judged on how quickly they step up.

One thing that has become obvious to me in the last couple of years is the need for the senior section to become closer to the junior section and the many mums and dads who support their children in their cricket development. There are always at least half a dozen kids watching the seniors at Arthur Street on Saturdays and Sundays. They have a sense of belonging to Bentleigh, feel at home there and no doubt aspire to be senior Bentleigh cricketers. In my contact with the Mums and Dads it is clear they too have a sense of belonging. This needs to be cultivated. When you take the numbers into account we have many more junior members than senior members. The parents of the juniors are in my view an untapped resource. If we can find a way to involve the parents more in the broader club it can only be to our advantage. Their contacts could prove invaluable and their support for fundraising efforts could only be positive.

We have started a Womens team this year, with great support from Rhiannon and James Robinson. These Ladies are a great bunch of women who play the game with a great spirit and enthusiasm. I know that they felt the welcome at the presentation night was special and very welcoming. We need to ensure that this continues and the Ladies on their part come down to the club with partners, family, friends and kids. We could be growing with a girls team on the agenda.

Sponsorship is the lifeblood of any successful club and I would like to take the time to thank all our wonderful sponsors. Bentleigh RSL, R&N Building Services, Woodards Bentleigh, Telstra Business Centre – Mentone, Telstra Store – Bentleigh, 7Apples, Grosvenor Hotel, Cushion, Urban Central, Brighton Toyota, Home Comforts, JBS Group, Bayside Companion Dog Training School, L & L meats, Bentleigh Paint Shop, Nick Staikos MP, Dimattina Coffee, Swaad Indian Restaurant, Southern Tile, Melbourne Glass, SMN, and Uppercuts Meat. Thank-you to these businesses and importantly to the wonderful people connected to them for their ongoing support of our great club.

I would also like to acknowledge Peter Todd, Belinda Griffiths, Andrew Barden and Anthony Traynor from the Glen Eira Council. We have forged a strong relationship with our council representatives over several years and I would like to see this grow and go from strength to strength. I would like to say thank you to them and their teams. Bentleigh Cricket Club is proud of the first-class facilities we enjoy and are extremely appreciative of all the support they proved. This support is to be further consolidated by the upgrade to the Arthur Street Reserve with the centre square being dug up and replaced along with the upgrading of the drainage system.

There is also many thanks to club members who have opened their homes to accommodate overseas players, at times this can upset harmony of everyday life but as true professionals we push on. Thanks to David, Kristie and Jackie for last year’s efforts.

I would on a personal level thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for all the friendship, support and love extended to myself and family over the years. My best friends in life and cricket are borne through my association with this great club – So thank you very much and I wish everyone of you the greatest health, wealth and happiness, today and always.

Well done to all who have contributed to the Bentleigh cause and I look forward to the coming season with great anticipation.

Vice President’s Report

Director of Cricket Report: The 2017/18 Season will go down in history as a great year for the Bentleigh Cricket Club. The 1st X1 Premiership was a Fantastic time for all involved at the Club. To see so

many BCC Faces there enjoying the moment was a sight to behold and brought tears to so many eyes. To Robert and all the players, this is a hard, well-earned life goal achieved and memory that will last forever. To our Coach Wayne Myers, well done, you are etched in the fabric and folklore of BCC. Congratulations to all the players involved, however special thanks to the people whom were behind the scenes helping to make this happen. Russell Keyt, Paul Evans, Paul Ciccarella, Roger Kellar, Matt Thorp, Ron McLeod, Peter, John, Jason, Winnie and many more for the endless off-season meetings, putting signs out, scoring, helping with Teas just to name a few jobs. To the Families whom housed our overseas players at costs that only you would understand, we Thank You. Trying to balance family life, whilst offering the best experiences for our young “Guests” affects everyone financially and the balances that have to be made daily with beds, meals, travel, cleaning, family harmony and yes Wi-Fi, only you can understand. With 3 weeks to go in the season the Cricket department thought we may have All 4 Senior Teams in the Finals. Our Captains kept all focussed and the results improved week to week. A win here or there over the season, and we would have all played in March. That said, many opportunities were given to Younger players and players on the improve. This was so pleasing, seeing the JD Team with 6 Dads and 6 Sons in Rd 1 was a great experience. We are essentially a year or so away from having many or several BCC Juniors playing regularly in the higher X1’s. The spots are there for this season coming and beyond, however the work needs to be done on the road and in the nets. I ask you all to look at Sam Mouzakis, Tim Mullane and several others whom will take the club forward long term and have proven they can compete at the highest levels. After a very tumultuous off season where we lost our best batsman and best bowler from the previous few years and our Club Champion, all by Presentation night, the challenge was there, yet again to build a 1st X1 that could compete. Success as a club is not always about premierships. We will continue to build a club that has a strong senior and junior program. We will not rest until we are the Club of choice. The fact that we have had a 4th X1, 2nd X1 and 1st X1 flag in 3 straight years, commenced a Womens program, grown a junior program and have Milo smashing them, proves we are doing something right. All of this whilst playing many young players in the JD Team developing the future of the club. Well Done Jason!

Enjoying the season, playing finals as a goal, training for an extra month, and sharing the ground with mates is part of the success. Let’s continue to aim high. I will leave the senior XI team breakdowns to our Captains whom have done a great job throughout the year. I touch on other areas below, and hope the Reports cover our appreciation to everyone. Our Women’s Program has started like a rocket, how exciting it is to see it all unfold. With Russ Keyt setting the tone early, and then Rhiannon and James Robinson steering the team with help from many along the way, the future is bright. Thanks to you both for shining the light. The Milo Program goes from strength to strength and a BIG Thank You to all involved. The senior club really gets behind the program and our ever reliable, volunteers, parents and friends supported our on-field Milo Co-ordinators wonderfully well. Thanks to all. Our Juniors go from strength to strength. With Steve Grogan, Chris Meister and many others such as Mick Foot, Steve McGinness, our parents and Coaches and so many more Thanks! The time you all put in year after year is amazing. Looking ahead, it is time for the Club to come together as a whole. We need to streamline our efforts and become ONE organisation. From a cricket point of view, we have four areas that need attention: Juniors, Women’s, Milo and Mens all deserving equal recognition. Many things are happening around the club by so many people in their spare time, to make sure all areas get the same resources, help, coaching and support. Please do your bit to help Bentleigh, truly, COME TOGETHER. Many Thanks to all, David McNamara. VP and Director of Cricket

Coaches Report

It gives me great pleasure to write my coaches report after having such a successful season as Head Coach

of the club. My thanks to Russell, David, The Committee and Members for the opportunity to be a part of a

very special season in the clubs history.

This season our 5 senior men’s teams all competed well and the 4 CSB teams all had a chance at playing in

finals. The 2s, 3s and 4s unfortunately missed out. Whilst our 1s got into finals and went all the way. Being

crowned the championship league premiers. I’m incredibly proud of all our teams performances and I know

that next season if the hard work is put in by the players we will have even more success.

The 2017/18 season started with a coaches meet followed by well attended preseason training at Mordy HQ

and a fielding session at Brighton Secondary School. These sessions were of a high standard and intensity

and set the tone for the rest of the years success.

Our 1st team squad, made up of mostly local players, toured Cobram and had some competitive middle time

against Yarraville CC before our league fixtures began.

Our Pros and senior club players lead from the front on and off the field and our midweek training was

intense, match-like and player empowering throughout the season. I congratulate all attendees for their

commitment and effort. Special mention should be made of the top class training facilities that we prepared

on.

A junior development team that initiated many young players into senior cricket whilst adding to the clubs

father son traditions proved most successful as many of these juniors attended the clubs senior practices

with most of them becoming regulars in our top 4 senior teams by the end of the season.

I would like to thank the 5 team captains, Rob, Paul, Thommo, Dave and Jason as well as Paul Evans (Club

Batting Coach) and David McNamara (Director of Cricket) for always assisting at practices, being prepared to

listen to my take on cricket or just joining me at the bar for a cold beverage.

My season at Bentleigh has been all the more enjoyable for sharing it with them and all the members and

supporters of the club.

Let me leave you with this most famous of cricket quotes attributed to Lord Harris on the occasion of his

80th birthday. A quote that I feel is appropriate for us all;

“You do well to love cricket, for it is more free from anything sordid, anything dishonorable, than any game

in the world. To play it keenly, honorably, generously, self-sacrificingly, is a moral lesson in itself, and the

classroom is God’s air and sunshine. Foster it, my brothers so that it may attract all who can find time to play

it; protect it from anything that would sully it, so that it may grow in favour with all”.

All the best for Season 2018/19 Wayne Myers Bentleigh CC, Head Coach 2017/18

1st XI Captains’ Report

“Culture before cover drives”

It seems like every time this club is challenged; the right people get together and make the

decisions needed to make sure we are competitive on the field. We said good bye to a fair few

cricketers from the previous year, our most prolific batsman and our opening bowler in particular.

Two cricketers who we thought would be very difficult to replace. Once again, we had a winter

of recruiting a head.

It was important we recruited guys that would bring a balance in ability and clubmanship. Our number one goal was

to make sure the change room culture was great and the cricket would take care of itself. We recruited heavily, Mitch

Spencer (fast bowler), Dan Richardson (allrounder), AJ Walker (batsmen), Josh Arksey (LH Orthi).

This year I appointed Jarrad Dowling Vice Captain, a partnership that worked perfectly to help keep the playing group

in the mind set we needed to perform each Saturday. His support through-out the season proved I had made the right

decision in his appointment.

After the previous year’s semi final loss, we were probably 3rd in line for the flag with the benchmark clubs South

Caulfield and Bonbeach a head of us.

We started the season against McKinnon in a one dayer, again another close game against the old rivals, a great knock

from Dan Ritcho saw us stumble over the line. It really gave the whole group a gage of what standard we needed to

be at to win games of cricket.

The first half of the season went really well, Strike bowler Mitch spencer found a great rhythm, bowling together with

Dan Richardson in 1 day cricket the pair were an unstoppable force that had taken 30 wickets between them to

Christmas. Our top order batsmen in Jarrad Dowling, Alex Caravalis, Tom Meredith, AJ Walker and myself showed

some great form all scoring multiple half centuries (and a couple of tons) before Christmas

We were undefeated for 7 rounds sitting on top of the ladder before the T20 cricket fixture started.

As per the previous year white ball cricket, in particular T20 cricket let us down. Something we will be striving hard to

improve in for this coming season.

After Christmas we welcomed Shane Jeffries to the club who became an integral part of the team for the remainder

of the season.

Page 18: BENTLEIGH CRICKET CLUB · 2018. 8. 1. · 1930 - 31 Herb H. Simmonds 1955 - 56 James Morgan 1989 - 90 Cedric Vanderwert 1931 - 32 Colin H. Middleton 1955 - 56 Edward Welch 1990 -

When you look at successful teams there are always a few defying moments that can change your season. Some come

from great moments, some from poor moments. We had both. Watching Sam Mouzakis who had played only a handful

of games smash an opening bowler over his head for six and literally win us the game off his innings is an example of

a moment that brings belief to the team. Or making nearly 300 runs, then watch a team that had only won 1 match

for the season chase us down nearly unbeaten is an example of a defining moment that tested commitment,

friendships and mental strength. That particular moment contributed in our eventual success. From that point forward

we were able to play as unit, each player understanding their roles, a lot of teams would fall apart and make drastic

unnecessary decisions. When we defended 100 against South in the last round before finals, the troops were ready to

play any team, at any ground, any time.

Semi- final rematch, this time at their home ground, performances from AJ Walker with the bat helped us to a

defendable score. Some great on field performances from the whole bowling unit helped in the defence. Some great

fielding moments (Dimi’s catch) showed our resilience under pressure. We celebrated a great win, but our focus

quickly turned to GF in 6 days.

I won the toss, batted, A well-constructed innings, a great hundred from Tommy that will never be forgotten,

contributions all the way to number 11. 10/293 a GF score that you would only dream of, a great wicket and a fast

outfield we all felt like we might have left 20 or 30 out there. South, known for having a very long batting side, I knew

we had to strike early. My trusty old VC, who had been kept fresh for most of the season, struck first with a peach that

took the top of off. Steady wickets fell until a 100-run stand from the middle order. An unbelievable leg side stumping

from Tommy, some great catches and pressure bowling from both ends made it too hard for South to get over the

line. A real team performance. Everyone contributed at some stage of the 2 days of cricket.

What was most noticeable throughout the entire final series was the amount of support we had from Bentleigh people,

playing members, past players, family and friends, we felt it on the field and was a huge part of our success. I would

like to personally thank you all.

I would also like to thank the committee for your help and support throughout the season.

Our match day support from the greatest scorer of all time and team manager Roger Kellar, Winnie and all who helped

with Teas. President and vice president Russ Keyt and Dave McNamara who have had the faith in myself over the last

3 seasons and of course all the Bentleigh boys. The entire club a 1st eleven premiership is a CLUB premiership, it takes

every players’ input to make it possible.

2nd XI Captains’ Report

Coming off a dominate year including a premiership and promoted to Division 2 I knew this year was going to be a bit tougher, but still thought we had a strong enough team to go all the way.

Unfortunately, we finished 5th and only just missed finals, although we were sitting in the 4 for most of the season.

We had some good wins but also lost some games that we should have won. Our loses were mainly due to inconsistent batting. We never really built large partnerships with the bat and seemed to always loose clumps of wickets.

The bowling was better but probably not to the level of the year before.

I was probably more disappointed in how we played (inconsistently) throughout the year, compared to where we finished on the ladder.

But the positive is that although we played far from our best cricket, we still nearly made finals.

It was great to see Sam Mouzakis become a regular 1s player. He had a great year in the 2s last year and continued to perform early this season, which had him promoted to the 1s. He wasn’t just making up numbers. He became an important member of the side with match winning performances and is now a back to back premiership player with the latter a senior division premiership.

As usual, Steve Booth was ever reliable and always took wickets when needed or slowed down and put pressure on the batting. Boothy had another great year taking 21 wickets at 18.19. He also won the (and well deserved) Ron McLeod Trophy for best player.

The winner of the 2s bowling award this year was Paul Dangerfield. Danger had a great year taking 22 wickets @ 15.64. Danger struggled to break into the 2s last year, playing majority in the 3s. He had a solid preseason and made a few adjustments which helped him become a regular player in the 2s and win the bowling award. A credit to Danger and it shows that all the hard work paid off. Hopefully Danger will continue his hard work and improvement and push for a spot in the 1s.

The runs to the batsmen were very light this year. The batting award was won by Adrian McInness, making 223 runs @ 27.88. Aida top scored and led the way with the bat in many games.

A big thanks to all the guys that played throughout the year. I know you played your hearts out for me. Thanks to guys like Boothy, Aida and Toddy that were a huge support also on and off the ground. I’m sure we can push further next year as well as blooding all the young talent that is coming through the ranks.

Congratulations to the 1s. A great effort. At one stage the 1s looked like nearly missing finals, then went on and won the semi and grand final, away from home and as huge underdogs.

Rob and guys like JD set the high standard very early at preseason training and all their hard work paid off. It was great to see the example set for the other elevens.

It was great that the whole club could celebrate with you in your success.

Also, thanks to the Executive, committee, coaches and everyone that contributed to BCC this year.

3rd XI Captains’ Report

It would be stretching the truth to say that consistency was a key feature of the 3rd XI in 2017/18.

There was a rotating cast of thousands through the team, including celebrity appearances from the

captains of both the 4th XI and Junior development side. Apart from a core of about 3-4 players, we

rarely managed to string the same side together in two games throughout the season, let alone two

consecutive games! Our form was not helped by the switch between codes either, with a real lack of

firepower hurting us in the white ball games.

So it is quite amazing then to reflect back on the season and realise that we were so close to finals and could have

scraped in with just the slightest change in fortune in the final round of the season. For all that it was a struggle at

many times during the season, it was also an opportunity for some people to show a bit of character and excel on a

personal level. One immensely satisfying aspect of the season was that some of the club stalwarts - guys such as

Dave Mullane, Mick Foot, Doc and Steve McGinness were all able to have an impact and show that they absolutely

still have what it takes to perform at that level next season if required. At the other end of the age spectrum, we saw

a number of the U16 players step up and perform well. It would not be a surprise to see some of them playing 1st XI

before the end of next season.

It is always difficult to single out individuals within the context of such a great effort from so many who came

through 3rd XI ranks this season. However, there are a few memorable moments that are worthy of mention:

• The opportunity to play with true legends of the club, such as those mentioned above. I learned so much

from playing with a guy like Motty whose talent and knowledge of the game speaks for itself. It was great to

play alongside his dad too.

• The growth of some of the players in the team with their ability to guts out a tough situation. A great

example was a guy like Grover, who scored runs in really tough situations all season and is a real loss to the

club for next year. It was nice to see Aido Martin continue to develop and he now just needs a bit of luck to

get that one big innings that should see him never look back.

Probably the highlight of the entire year was our final game, where we played Chelsea and were looking down the

barrel of quite a big score when they were batting. The introduction of spin pulled things back for us, with Shaun

Yue, an U16 playing only his second game in the 3rds, taking two crucial wickets to be the pick of the bowlers.

Not satisfied with that, he then came out to bat at number 9 with the side in big trouble: 3 wickets in hand, still 80

runs to get. In the blink of an eye, another two wickets fell and about 75 were required with 9 down and only the

skipper left for company. The crowds may have packed up and gone home, but Shaun had other ideas. With the aid

of a few nicks and nudges (and the odd agricultural slog) from the skipper, Shaun proceeded to calmly dismantle the

bowling and accumulate the required runs to bring the side home to victory.

Here's hoping that Bentleigh's strength as a club in 2018/19 can provide just that final spark to ensure a successful

season for the 3rd XI.

4th XI Captains’ Report

This season saw the 5th XI move from the MCA One Day Competition into the CSB One Day Division

2 Saturday Competition. Hence white balls and coloured clothing for the whole season. It was a

season of highs and lows with 7 wins, 6 losses and 5 draws. It would ultimately be the draws that

impacted our run for finals, which finished agonising short being 1 point out of 4th place. With the

right team I believe we would have given the finals a red hot go – we were the only team during the

season to beat the eventual premiers.

Being a bottom XI the make-up of the team varied significantly from week to week as injury and

unavailability drew players into higher elevens. A total of 34 players played in the 4th XI and provided

a bridge for junior players and also some older stalwarts of the club to keep their hand and eye

in. The bowling was strong throughout the season with multiple people who I could rely on to take

a vital wicket or keep the runs down. Major wicket takers were David McNamara 15, David Mullane

12, Robert Clancy 7, and Lucas Jones 6. However, while there were good performances with the bat

by Steve McGuiness 144 runs, Vihare Nikare 131, David McNamara 109 Jay Peart 92 and Lucas Jones

95, too often we had major collapses, which if improved will provide a good platform for the coming

season.

The Bowling award was won by David McNamara with 15 wickets at 10.93, and David also won the

batting award with 109 runs at 21.80. The Roger Kellar award was won by David Mullane.

5th XI Captains’ Report

This season saw the introduction of the 5th XI, or as it became known, the JD Team. JD standing for

Junior Development. The purpose of this team was many and varied, but ultimately it was about

getting our older juniors (Under 14 and up) experience playing on Turf in a senior competition. The

first game of the season featured 6 of our juniors all playing with their dads, something that is believed

to have been a first for the club. That we won that first game made the experience even more special.

As the season moved on the make up of the team changed from week to week, depending on the

juniors availability and which dad’s could still move enough to play consecutive days and weeks. Some

games would feature mainly Under 14 players, others, an even number of u14, u16 and u18 players,

all with a few dad’s to guide and educate. Whilst the initial plan was that a dad would try to bat with

a junior, as the season wore on this happened less frequently, a sure sign that the boys were gaining

the required experience and confidence to play at the level.

There were many great individual efforts by the boys over the course of the season, first senior

wickets, first senior runs, highest scores and best figures. Boys being able to bat for long periods of

times, and boys learning from one week to another why they got out, took wickets or generally played

well. A real positive as far as I am concerned.

Whilst results may not have gone our way for the majority of the year, that wasn’t the objective of the

team. On many occasions we were able to push far more experienced (and serious) teams and even

beat a finalist in the final round of the year. The number of times that we received comments from

opposition players after the day’s play, commending our team and the attitude and ability of the boys

as well as the envy that they had with what we were doing as a club for our juniors, was mind boggling.

We had close to 40 players represent the team, over half of these were our juniors, and the future of

the club. One of the most pleasing things was seeing many of the boys who started the season unsure

about even playing in the JD team, not only enjoying it, but going on to play in higher teams for the

club, a terrific effort.

I would like to thank the Committee for backing this team and the opportunity that it brings for the

boys in the future. I hope that the philosophy that it brings will be carried on for next season and

beyond.

I would also like to thank Chris Meister for his ongoing support, and to all the dads who played and

assisted me with my understanding of the game also.

Women’s XI Captains’ Report

2017 saw the return of Women’s Cricket to Bentleigh after a 23 year absence. BCC became a

foundation member of the Cricket Southern Bayside Women’s Competition. The competition was

targeted at women interested in trying cricket for the first time.

Bentleigh’s team was created through word-of-mouth. Interest from family members of BCC players

formed the initial back bone of the team and they started to recruit their friends. The vast majority

of players had no previous cricket experience beyond the odd beach cricket game. With a group of

time poor, novice players the biggest priority was to build confidence and make the total experience

from training to match day enjoyable, ensuring that players wanted to keep coming back.

Pre-season preparation needed to be targeted to ensure that novice players had sufficient skills to

survive their first game. Core skills of batting, bowling and fielding formed the basis of the training in

the early days and game play strategies then built upon this. Given the limited time between first

picking up a bat and playing, innovative strategies such as diagrams on a dedicated Facebook group

helped get key concepts across.

The first year’s competition was a modified T20 format, played over 5 weeks in February / March.

Most games were played at Caulfield Park on adjoining grounds creating a carnival atmosphere. BCC

fielded a full team every game, all players made a contribution to the team and showed significant

skill development over the course of the season.

Highlights of the season:

• Kristie McNamara took the first wicket of the season, clean bowling an East Malvern opener.

• First catch of the season went to Kim Hazendonk

• Clare Breese & Trish Jeffery’s unbroken 82 run final wicket partnership against eventual

premiers Omega

• 12 batting retirements spread across 9 different players

• Trish Jeffery had the highest aggregate runs and wickets over the season

When looking back at the first season a number of contrasts are observed between men and

women’s cricket, the most obvious being the number of children involved. Training and matches

often had up to a dozen children hanging around the nets and the boundary line. It was not

unknown for a player to need to come off the field to help a child to the bathroom. Jewellery and

fingernails proved to be a battle, as was finding the right sort of caps to accommodate pony tails. On

field the teams often chatted and encouraged the opposition teams, and this more relaxed and

social atmosphere was also a feature of the training sessions (sometimes to the dismay of the

coach).

Page 25: BENTLEIGH CRICKET CLUB · 2018. 8. 1. · 1930 - 31 Herb H. Simmonds 1955 - 56 James Morgan 1989 - 90 Cedric Vanderwert 1931 - 32 Colin H. Middleton 1955 - 56 Edward Welch 1990 -

The team showed tremendous dedication to improving themselves over the year. Training sessions

were always well attended – whether on a rainy Sunday morning in October or a 38 degree day in

January. The improvement in skill level from the practice match to the last game was remarkable

and was something that was commented on by opposition teams. It was a great credit to the team

that they were able to improve so much while never losing sight of the fact that they were there to

have fun.

The team also embraced the social side with a post-game picnic after each game. BCC was the

always the last to leave the ground and a couple of umpires enjoyed staying for a glass of wine and

cheese. The presentation night was well attended by the Women’s team, and team members

remarked on the warmth of the reception by the wider club and are looking forward to increased

involvement in the social side in the coming season.

The 2018/19 season will build on the first season’s success. Cricket Southern Bayside are expecting

an expanded number of teams and a longer season is planned. The carnival atmosphere of the

Caulfield Park venue will be retained, but with a home game for each team planned for the second

half of the season. We have strong indications that the majority of our team will be retained in the

coming season with interest expressed by new players. Over time we hope to build multiple teams

at a range of age and ability levels to bring cricket and club participation to a wider group amongst

our local community.

The Women’s team would like to thank: Russell Keyt for his commitment to bringing a Women’s

Team back to Bentleigh and his work behind the scenes to get it off the ground. Wanda McGuinness

for helping with training and skill development even when her knee put her out of action. Dave

Mullane for his dedication as scorer and helping with training. The friends and family of all the

players for their encouragement and support. And last but not least our coach James Robinson for

his expertise and patience, you developed skills we never knew we had and uncovered in us an

appreciation for this game that was quite unexpected.

Junior Cricket Report

Junior Coordinators’ Report

The Bentleigh Junior cricketers had a good 2017/18 season. Numbers were up

from the previous season with 8 teams.

We had 4 rookies teams 1 Saturday and 3 Sunday teams. It was great to see the

enthusiasm from the players and how they improved from the start of the season

to the end. We’re looking forward to seeing the older rookies stepping up to under 12 next year.

The under 12c and 14c teams had a great year making the grand final. Unfortunately, they could not

get over the line. The improvement from the start of the year was impressive and look forward to

seeing what they can do next season.

The 16b and 14b teams both made finals but could not get through to Grand Finals.

There some great performances through the year. We had a good mix of juniors playing both

representative and senior cricket through the season.

The Junior club champion award was the closest in years. Runner up was Luke Mott and

congratulations to the winner Josh Hunt.

I would like to thank all the coaches and team managers for your efforts during the year and Chris

Meister (Junior Secretary) for all his great work before and throughout the season.

The Junior section is looking strong and we look forward to seeing what they can do next season.
