The Bequia Sunshine School’s annual fund-raising Auction is just over one week away - and your donations are still urgently needed! So please check in your closets and cupboards and pull out those “too-good-to-throw-away” items so they can be auctioned off to raise money for this incredibly worthy cause.
This year the auction will once again be a stand-alone event, with viewing starting at 1pm and the Auction itself starting at 2pm sharp. A selection of handicrafts made by the students in their workshop and craft classes will also be on sale, as will refreshments and food donated by local businesses and individuals.
All items donated will be carefully sorted and selected either for the Auction or for the massive Jumble Sale which will be held in March. The proceeds from both events go directly towards the running costs of the Bequia Sunshine School for Children with Special Needs, a privately funded institution administered by a local Board of Directors.
The Government supports the school by paying the head teacher's salary plus one other - financing the rest is up to the generosity of others! Last year’s auction totalled around EC$26,000, which together with the Jumble Sale proceeds will have covered the school's running costs for less than
six months, so your support is absolutely vital. Currently there are 31 students attending daily classes
and their progress in all aspects of learning and skill- training is remarkable. The dedication of the schools’ four teachers and head teacher Camille Jacobs ensures that the stu-dents are continually guided and encouraged. The students’ own enthusiasm for learning and achievement creates a very special and uplifting atmosphere in this unique school.
So if you have anything to donate to the Auction or Jumble Sale, please deliver directly to the Sunshine School (located just before the High School on the road to Spring) Monday to Friday 9am - 2pm.
There’s a wide selection of items donated already includ-ing: Apple iPod, romantic dinner, bed & breakfast for two at Bequia Beach Hotel, catamaran trip with lunch to Isle de Quatre, collection of over 70 iconic LPs from the 60s, 70s and 80s, lunch in an original Moonhole house, gourmet dinner aboard SS Tjeldoy with music by David Maxwel, a good selection of jewellery and art work, household items, furniture and much more. Ask anyone who has been to a previous Sunshine School auction and they’ll tell you it’s really not to be missed – great bargains, a great cause and hugely entertaining! So make a note – Sunday 14th February is one afternoon that you should NOT spend on the beach!
