KHEMAH REMAJA BERJALIN DENGAN FIRMAN

2

Initially organised as camps, WordAlive saw the first ever conference-style event being held on the premises of Damansara Utama Methodist Church (DUMC) over two days in August 2018. With many young leaders from DUMC working closely with the SU team, everything proceeded smoothly. The talks were crafted around the Bible’s Big Picture to emphasise the importance of engaging the words of the Bible in our lives and the practical methods of doing so. Workshops on relevant topics regarding biblical friendship,

apologetics, and social media were also conducted for the 50-odd attendees. Throughout the second day of the conference, the organisers conducted station-based activities and a Life Game to provide interactive and visual

aid to ingrain important references from the Bible upon the youths. With the aim of breathing new life

into the participants through the study of the words of the Scriptures, WordAlive 2018 turned out to be a great success in its own right.

THE F IRST EVErWORDALIVE CONFERENCE

(23-24 Aug 2018)

A PARADISE OF

NATURE

This year almost 7500 participants in 191 centres from 11 States and Kuala Lumpur took part in the postal quiz. Participants have increased from last year, with 40% of them coming from Sabah and Sarawak alone.

Two Bible Knowledge quizzes run by the Malayan Christian Schools Council and Scripture Union help to promote and support the candidates for the SPM Bible Knowledge (BK) Paper. But the excitement and challenge of these quizzes attract more than just the candidates.

IN SUPPORT OF

MCSC’s National SPM BK Quiz SU’s National Postal QuizIt was held at SMJK Katholik, Petaling Jaya on 4 August 2018. 28 BK teams, winners from the 6 Regional Oral Quizzes held in Ipoh, Petaling Jaya, Melaka, Miri, Kota Kinabalu, and Kuching, took part.

438 students (Forms 1-6) from Selangor, KL, Seremban, Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan, and Kuching took the BK 18 written Quiz earning certificates and prizes.

The top national teams were St David’s Melaka, SMK Methodist Sibu, Sri Sempurna KL and St Joseph’s Private School Kuching. MCKL awarded some scholarships to the winners. His Grace, Archbishop Julian Liow was present to give away the prizes and close the event.

SCRIPTURE UNION: A SIDEKICK FOR CHURCHES

Batman has Alfred. Captain Kirk has Spock. Iron Man has Jarvis. Han Solo has Chewbacca. Sherlock Holmes has Dr. Watson. Hang Tuah has Hang Jebat. And the Church of Jesus Christ has Scripture Union. Okay, that might be too far a stretch (and we are probably far from it), but that’s at least what we aim to be.

Scripture Union has always been operating on this one fundamental approach: We work with the churches. We recognise we are not a church, and were never meant to be. We are a para-church organisation seeking to complement and supplement the ministries of the churches. We endeavor to work with the churches – not against them and not apart from them. As one previous General Secretary put it: If the Church is the Bride of Christ, then we are the bridesmaid. Of course the problem with the analogy is that it has its own limitations, and in this example being we too are part of the Church.

3

However, that sets the tone of our ministry. Whatever the church needs, we try to meet – programmes, resources, event speakers, and many more. One of the ways we do that is through our Regional Activities with Churches (REACH) Programmes. Every year we make trips to various cities and towns all around Malaysia to run programmes and activities for the churches. Over the past few years, we had run our REACH

Programme in Melaka, Kuantan, Penang, Sitiawan, Kluang, Ipoh, Seremban, and Alor Setar.

Last May, we had the privilege to do some ministries among the churches down south in Johor Bahru. With a team of six, we ran our Bible Engagement Seminars at a School, Youth Fellowship, and a Church. A quick fun fact – over the course of this year, we have been planning

and preparing for Stage 2 of our Bible Engagement Seminar, and it was the first time we ran it here in JB! We also visited four churches, preaching the Word of God and sharing SU’s ministry.

Our resources were selling like hot cakes too! We thank God for the fruitful trip, and the generosity of the various churches that hosted us throughout the REACH Programme. We pray that the Gospel work will continue to grow in JB, and that the churches are very much blessed by the little we had done through the trip.

Sharing the Good News and my personal life stories to large groups of (all girl) students. Studying the Bible during the Bible Engagement (BE) sessions with the SU staff. I’ve learnt and grown so much through many insightful and heartfelt conversations with the people in SU and FES.

What were some of your memorable moments at SU?

Being a football coach in the SUPA Sports camp in Penang. It was my first time teaching people how to play football. Learning how to prepare a message. Through the Bible engagement programme for interns, I’ve learnt how to read the Bible more effectively. Travelling around extensively (PJ, Johor, Tapah, Penang, and Port Dickson) for camps, rallies, CFs, church visitations, and so on.

Joanne has worked for SU as a Personal Assistant for 5 years. Her journey as a full-time staff has come to an end and she’ll like to leave a farewell

message in poetry:

It’s been 5 years of joyful labour5 years of God’s kind favour

5 years filled with tears and blissThere are many things I’ll miss

God’s ways are higher than mineHe leads me; I’ll fall in line

He’ll show me the way to goHis Word and will I’ll follow

The rotation of three types of sports (football, frisbee, and tchoukball) very much excited the 61 children who attended this day camp. At the end of each friendly match, they shook hands

NUA is all about exploration: it’s a film series produced by Scripture Union Ireland that encourages questions, acknowledges doubt, and offers an engaging perspective on the Christian faith.

NUA / nu: ʌ / noo-ah / Language of origin: Irish Adjective, meaning “new”. It’s a fresh perspective, a different conversation — It’s new and it’s Irish, so that is why it is called NUA. It’s as simple as that, really.

NUA is a series of eight short films intended to be watched over time. This film series is about impact—immediate and personal, as well as the long-term, life-changing experience of working out your faith.

NUA film series is available for you at our website www.su.org.my under Resources.

with their opponents and the coaches rounded it all up with a pep-talk. The lessons and activities were based on how we can be on Jesus Team:

repenting of our ways, equipping ourselves with God’s word and being witnesses for Jesus. Each child was given a Bible too. The children were enthusiastic as they looked forward each day to a new skill they could learn from each sport through their coaches. On the last day, some were rather sad as they said goodbye to their newly made friends while others were proud to introduce their coaches and group leaders to their parents.

Game Over. That’s the theme for the National School Christian Fellowship Leaders’ (NSCFL) Camp this year, based on Galatians 2:20.

But it also signifies another thing – it marks the end of the 25 years of NSCFL Camp. Started in 1993, NSCFL Camp was birthed to replace the Kem Jawatan Kuasa, a similar SCF Leadership Training Camp organised

by SU to support the school ministry work. This iconic camp has blessed many students, raised up leaders of many generations, and saw the

expansion of God’s work among the schools. And we want to celebrate it. The last NSCFL Camp is being held from 26 November to 1 December at STM, Seremban

and we are having the NSCFL Camp 25-Year Celebration on 1 December, Saturday, 10.30am at STM itself. If you’re a camp alumnus, or have served in the camp, we invite you to join us in celebrating God’s faithfulness and

providence through the camp. Refer to the brochure for more information. On a side note, we are still committed to training young leaders and growing the school ministry work. The youth leadership camp will take on a new name from 2019 onwards to better serve the ministry.
