Notice a change in the look of the newsletter this month? We are transitioning editor and programs. Jim Scott has asked to step aside and Wendy Davis has graciously picked up the pieces. If you see her on a ride not only thank her for once again stepping forward into this position but she also will be bringing to the rides left over chocolate brownies from the Shoo -fly donated by Sweet Street. Because preregistrations were light as well as the fact that we were competing with 3 other regional events that day, we estimated the turnout for the Shoo-fly to be 150 riders. Supplies were purchased conservatively. The weather could not have been more delightful and brought out 177 riders. Nowhere near our 2010 high of 370 riders but we still managed a modest profit just under $3,000. Our donation to Oley Township for $531 represents 10% of gross receipts. Not bad! Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time and to all who came out to support the ride. Maybe next year if I can manage to not fall off my bike I can ride the darned thing! In 2014, we will host the Shoo-fly a little later in the month in an effort to minimize scheduling conflicts with other rides- so mark your calendars for September 27, 2014. While we are on the topic of scheduling- please note the 2014 Annual Meeting and Banquet will be held on FRIDAY MARCH 21, 2014 at the Oley Fairground Banquet Hall. This is an election year. It’s time to get involved people. Perfect opportunity to be a part of the direction the club is going. Reminds me of a quote: “Ask not what your club can do for you. Ask what you can do for your bike club” ….or something like that. And remember- don’t be a jerk: be respectful, ride safe and ride smart. Message from Newsletter Editor: Yes, I am back! For those of you who do not know I was newsletter editor for the club way back in 1996. I did it for 6 years before giving it up. Since the club was in need of someone I stepped in. I want to thank Jim Scott for doing a great job! It will look different because I don’t have the same program that Jim was using. For those of you who don’t know who I am. I am the one who goes around most of the hills. I take the last group out on Tuesday night rides to do an easier ride. I bring the snacks and drinks to the weekend rides. I am also the one who bakes those little shoo flies for the Shoo Fly Classic Ride. My bike is a blue Trek 5500 with pink handlebar tape and a hot pink Fuel Belt on the top tube. I’m usually get to the rides in a brown Toyota pickup truck with my hubby Rick Davis. One pet peeve that I have is cyclists running red lights! For those of you who ride with me know that I will yell at you if you go through one. According to the law you must STOP at a red light. If it doesn’t change in a cycle then you can proceed to go through the red light if there is no traffic. One traffic light that I see riders going through is the one in Oley at the intersection of Rt. 73 and Oysterdale/Covered Bridge Road which DOES change on a cycle. It is also has a longer green light than you think coming off Oysterdale/Covered Bridge Roads so several cars and cyclists can make it through. For the safety of those riding with you please STOP at red lights! You not only ensure your safety, but also increase respect for cyclists as law-abiding road users. Always wear your helmet! If you have any articles that you would like me to put in please email them to me at [email protected]. Wendy Davis, Newsletter Editor

First Number: Terrain Rating Terrain rating 1-5 rates the total hilliness of the ride.

1 = FLAT – easiest 2= GENTLY ROLLING HILLS–moderate terrain with easiest of hills (Almost anyone can handle). 3= SOME HILLS–Moderate hills with some steeper grades (Moderately Challenging–but within the ability of most riders). 4= HILLY – The number and difficulty of hills is quite substantial (Very Challenging).

5= EXTREMELY HILLY Extreme Challenge- steep and long hills most of the ride–Requires a very high fitness level).

Second Number: Total Mileage for ride Please note the Club policy on protective headgear: ALL Riders must wear Snell/ANSI rated helmets. Ride Host/Hostess will NOT give cue sheets to riders without helmets and that rider will not be considered an official participant of the Club ride. Please have your bike in proper working order BEFORE the start of ride. Arrive 10-15 minutes before start time so that all rides leave on time. Make sure you have a spare tube or patch kit and at least one water bottle. If weather conditions are questionable, the ride host may notify club members by posting a message on Facebook prior to the ride or make a decision at the starting location based on road conditions and weather forecasted at the time of the ride. SPECIAL RIDE DETAILS Special rides during the months will be highlighted in color. If you are hosting a special ride, please contact Newsletter Editor Wendy Davis or Ride Coordinator Alan Fineman before the 18th of each month to tell other club members about it. Did you have a great experience on a ride? Let us know and we’ll add pictures and stories about your ride!
