Newbery Park Primary School

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Collaborative approach to Learning

The African derived proverb "It takes a village to raise a child" means that the

work of raising (including schooling) a child cannot be done alone; rather,

an entire community must participate to some extent in the task.

It is wonderful to be part of a united school community and to see not only

our teachers, support staff, external agencies and DECD support service’s

who nurture and develop our students, but our parents who week in, week

out engage in supporting students learning at Newbery Park Primary. At

Newbery Park we understand that for some families working commitments

can prevent a hands on approach at school, however, we thank-you for

following up on homework and having conversations with your children at

home about their learning; this is invaluable for your child.

As Principal it has been wonderful to work with you to improve learning

opportunities for your child. Feedback from across the school community in

relation to the portfolio meetings is that they have been invaluable for the

teacher, student and family in having a ‘Collaborative approach to learning’.

If at any stage of your child's learning you have questions, queries, concerns

or compliments, please remember that your child's teacher and my office

door are always open to discuss your child's learning.

Term Three Planner

Term three is filling up fast, the school is offering an abundance of exciting

excursions and activities for our students. It is handy to hold onto this planner

and pop it on your fridge to keep track of anything that applies to your child.

Please note as this newsletter contains the term 3 calendar it has been

distributed in paper format. Going forwards newsletters will continue to be

distributed via email/Facebook/website and also available from the front

office.

Stuart Miller

Team 3

2D shapes and 3D objects

This term in Team 3, our first Numeracy topic

has been exploring 2D shapes and 3D objects.

In our first week we began by recognising and

describing 2D shapes. The Learning Intention

for this lesson was to draw an image, using a

variety of 2D shapes, and to be as creative as

possible! Here are a few of our designs!

“Le Boite de Jou Jou” (The Toy Box)

Composed by Claude Debussy (1862 – 1918)

On Thursday 27th

of July our whole school travelled to the Millicent Civic and Arts Centre to watch

a performance of this famous piece of music. The band “Artists by Any Other Name” is a group of

young musicians and dancers based in New York.

The aim of this band is to challenge the way an audience experiences important historical music

by combining contemporary dance, drama and storytelling.

The performers are also experienced teachers who provided free lessons to local students in

dance, drama, and string instruments after school on Wednesday and Thursday.

The students said the after school sessions were extremely helpful and also fun. They came away

with many new techniques to try and they learnt to think about performing arts from a different

angle.

Internal Netball Competition We ran our first annual netball round robin on Friday 7th July (last day

of term 2). We had 6 teams participating, all eargerly trying for top

spot and having a lot of fun in the process. Students made up 3

teams, the other 3 teams were teachers, parents, governing

counci/parents and friends. Mr Scanlon’s class put on a sausage

sizzle during lunch as a fundraiser for their school camp.

Teachers and GCPF played off in the final with GCPF coming away

with the win.

It was a fantastic day, enjoyed by players and spectators alike.

Thank you to everyone involved for making it a success and a

special thank you to Fina Hein who was insturmental in pulling it all

together.

Lots of discussions last term was made regarding the
