The BIOS firmware is built into PCs, and it is the first software they run when powered on.

CMOS BATTERYCMOS BATTERY

Complementary metal-oxide semiconductor, or CMOS, typically refers to a battery-powered memory chip in your computer that stores startup information. Your computer's basic input/output system (BIOS) uses this information when starting your computer.

Why computer ergonomics? Many people spend hours a day in front of a computer without thinking about the impact on their bodies. They physically stress their bodies daily without realizing it by extending their wrists, slouching, sitting without foot support and straining to look at poorly placed monitors.

What is computer ergonomics?

What is a printer?

• An external hardware device responsible for taking computer data and generating a hard copy of that data. Printers are one of the most commonly used peripherals and they print text and still images on the paper.

many ink dots can be placed by the printer in one square inch. The higher the DPI, the sharper is image.

(2) Type of printer: • Each type of printer has its own capabilities of printing.

Some types of printers produce high quality print while other produce low quality print.

(3) Print Mode:• The printing mode may also affect the quality. For

example the draft mode increases the print rate but quality is reduced.

Computers need backing storage outside the CPU to store data and programs not currently in use. There are three main types of storage device:Those that store data by magnetizing a

special material that coats the surface of a disk.

Those that store data using optical technology to etch the data onto a plastic-coated metal disk. Laser beams are then passed over the surface to read the data.Flash drives use solid state technology and store data in a similar way to the BIOS chip.

Types of backing storage

TYPES OF BACKING STORAGEThe medium is what the data is actually stored

on. Examples of media include floppy disks, CD-ROMs and zip disks.

Floppy disks hold about1.44 MB of data.

Zip disks store up to750 MB of data.

CDs hold around 700 MB of data.

The hard disk of the computer stores the system information, programs and data that the computer uses every day.

Computer servers will use RAID systems with many hard drives to provide huge capacity and safer storage. The drives can be mirrored so that data written to one of them is also written to others, so if one drive fails, the others just take over.

Removable hard drives plug into the USB port and can be used for backup or transfer of data to another computer.

BACKING STORAGE – HARD DRIVES

There are two main types of optical storage: CD and DVD. They look exactly the same, but DVDs hold much more data than CDs and need different drives to read them.

CD-ROMs are read only – you can read data from them but can’t write more data to them.CD-Rs allow you to write data once, but you can’t write over it. CD-RWs allow you to write data and then record new data over it.DVD-Rs and RWs follow the same pattern. You need special software to write to CDs and DVDs – you cannot simply copy files to them.

BACKING STORAGE – OPTICAL

In recent years, flash memory has become much more popular. It holds a lot of data in a very small space. It doesn’t need special software to use it. Most computers will recognize the device as soon as you plug it in.Flash memory sticks connect through USB or FireWire ports. Many other devices, like digital cameras and MP3 players, also use flash memory.Flash memory cards can hold different types of data so your MP3 player could hold a data file with your homework on it, for example.

BACKING STORAGE – FLASH MEMORY

Things you need to know about

internet

WHAT IS INTERNET?The Internet is an integral part of our everyday lives. In the early days, most people just used the Internet to search for information. Today's Internet is a constantly evolving tool that not only contains an amazing variety of information but that also provides new ways of accessing, interacting, and connecting with people and content.

Did you know? The foundation of the Internet began in 1969, when the U.S. Department of Defense created ARPAnet, a project to allow military personnel to communicate with each other in an emergency.

Here is the BBN team, known as the "IMP guys", who deployed ARPANET in 1969.

More about internet History

• By 2012, the number of Internet users worldwide reached 2.4 billion—about one-third of the world's population.

• To store all of the information that's available on the Internet, you would need more than 1 billion DVDs or 200 million Blu-ray discs.

Things you can do on the internet

VOIPVoice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), also known as internet telephone, allows a user to have telephone service through an internet connection. Some people find that they can save money by using VoIP instead of purchasing a separate telephone service. One example is Skype.

EmailEmail (short for "electronic mail") is a system for sending and receiving messages online.

SOCIAL NETWORKINGSocial networking refers to online services that allow people to interact with each other and stay connected with friends, family, and people around the world. Examples include Facebook and Twitter. Some social networking sites, such as LinkedIn, focus on career networking.

ONLINE CHAT (instant messaging)Online chat is a system that allows users to communicate in real time. Unlike e-mail, all messages show up immediately in the same window, which makes conversations quicker and easier. Instant messaging is a type of chat where you communicate with a specific person instead of an entire chat room.

BLOG"Blog" is short for "web log." It's a type of web site that is usually updated frequently, often with news articles or random thoughts. Some sites, such as blogger.com, allow you to create and edit your own blog for free.

StreamingIf you watch a movie online or listen to iTunes radio, it's called streaming media, which means it plays while downloading so you don't have to wait for it to download first. The media starts downloading a little bit before it starts playing (called "buffering") so that it can play more smoothly. ITunes, YouTube….etcITunes, YouTube….etc

WIKI• A wiki is a type of website that allows content to be edited or

created by anyone. This allows content to stay up to date and (ideally) allows for errors to be found and corrected. Examples include Wikipedia, which is an encyclopedia, and wikiHow, which is a collection of how-to guides.

Webcast/PodcastWith a podcast, you can subscribe to a series of audio or video files that will automatically be downloaded to your computer. The files can then be played on the computer or an mp3 player. A podcast is basically a web feed for media. Unlike internet radio, podcasts are not streaming, so the media has to download fully before it can be played.

Social bookmarking• Social bookmarking allows users all over the internet to

save and share interesting sites. Examples include Reddit and Delicious.

• Some social bookmarking sites are mainly used to share photos that people have found around the web. Pinterest (shown below) is an example of this type of site.

What is the Internet? The Internet is the largest computer network in the world, connecting millions of computers. A network is a group of two or more computer systems linked together.

Main types of computer networks:• Local Area Network (LAN): A LAN is two or more

connected computers sharing certain resources in a relatively small geographic location, often in the same building. Examples include home networks and office networks.

Wide Area Network (WAN): A WAN typically consists of two or more LANs.

A PERSONAL AREA NETWORK – PAN – is a computer network built around an individual person. Personal area networks usually are a mobile computer, a mobile phone and/or a handheld computing device such as a tablet, netbook or a PDA.

A Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) is a large computer network that spans a metropolitan area or campus.

Servers and clientsYou may have heard someone say something like "The server is down" or "We're having problems with the e-mail server." A server is a computer that "serves" many different computers in a network by running specialized software and storing information. For example, webpages are stored on servers. When you access a webpage, your computer is acting as a client. A client runs familiar software such as web browsers or email software, and it communicates with the server to get the information it requires.

In order for your browser to display a webpage, it requests data from the server where the page is stored. The server processes the request, then sends the data to your browser, where it is displayed.

The World Wide WebWhen most people think of the Internet, the first thing they think about is the World Wide Web. Nowadays, the terms "Internet" and "World Wide Web" are often used interchangeably—but they're actually not the same thing. The Internet is the physical network of computers all over the world. The World Wide Web is a virtual network of websites connected by hyperlinks (or "links"). Websites are stored on servers on the Internet, so the World Wide Web is a part of the Internet.

To get to a webpage, you can type the URL (Uniform Resource Locator) into a browser. The URL, also known as the web address, tells the browser exactly where to find the page.

By creating strong passwords, you can greatly reduce the chance that your personal or financial information will be stolen.

Common password mistakes

Many people create passwords based on their spouse's names, a hobby, or a simple pattern, since those types of passwords are easy to remember. Unfortunately, they are also very easy for hackers to guess. To create a strong password, you will need to avoid these types of common mistakes.

Using the Internet in the future

The Internet is always changing, and the ways in which we access it will also continue to change. Technology will continue to become more common and integrated into our everyday lives.

How do I connect to the How do I connect to the Internet?Internet?

Once you've set up your computer, you'll probably want to get Internet access so you can send and receive email, browse the web, watch movies, and do more. Before you can access the Internet, though, there are three things you need: Internet service, a modem, and a web browser.

Choosing an Internet Choosing an Internet serviceservice

It all depends on where you live and how much speed you need. Internet service providers (ISPs) usually offer different levels of speed based on your needs. If you're mainly using the Internet for e-mail and social networking, a slower connection might be all you need, but if you want to download a lot of music or watch streaming movies, you'll want a faster connection.

THESE ARE THE THINGS YOU NEED TO TEACH YOUR STUDENT BEFORE

THEY SIT FOR ANY CBT EXAM

Every JAMB candidate will sit for Computer Based Test popularly known as CBT exam. Although this might not be new to some people but there are many applicants who will struggle or even fail because of their limited knowledge of computer.

TEACH THEM BASICS OF COMPUTING (COMPUTER APPRECIATION)

Knowing how computer set works and being computer literate will afford you some extra time during JAMB exam because you will not have to need to ask your exam invigilator questions about how to do something in your computer.

Provide CBT software for Practice CBT Exam

This software is a simulation of what the CBT examination looks like. It has a timing and a pool of questions for a set of combinations. The time starts reading backwards from the time allowed to zero when the test closes upDo not wait until the last day before you start practicing allowing your students practice on CBT software.

Time ManagementIn CBT exams, one thing every candidate should be conscious of is time. Time management can make or break your success. Do not focus more or spend more time on questions that you do know off head. You can jump them and come back to them when you must have been done with all the questions you know.

Pay attention to instruction

This is not peculiar to JAMB CBT exam. It is a very important habit you must cultivate.Don’t make the mistake of trying to cheat time and you forego the examination instructions

Make sure you mark your answer

When you are inside an exam hall, the atmosphere is quite different. There is element of pressure and anxiety. Try to be as focus as you can and make sure you answered any question you know by ticking or selecting it before moving to the next question.
