For the first time since 2007, a wide-release movie one that has played nationwide on hundredsof screens, rather than an independent, foreign, or "arthouse" film has captured the title of best-reviewed movie of the year. The Social Network95, David Finchers chronicle of the founding ofFacebook, is also just the fourth movie since 2000 to achieve a Metascore of 95 or higher.

That high level of acclaim is also manifesting itself on the awards circuit, where The SocialNetworkis dominating the awards and nominations on its way to scoring what is sure to be a large

number of Oscar nominations later this month. Unsurprisingly, the film is also turning up on morecritics year-end top 10 lists than any other 2010 release.

However, what was a good year forThe Social Networkwasnt necessarily a good year forHollywood as a whole, at least by one measure. In 2010, just 30 films met or exceeded the 81Metascore threshold that indicates "universal acclaim" from critics. That is well below 2009stotal of 37 highly-acclaimed films, and you have to go back to 2006 to find a year with fewer greatmovies. On the bright side, only three 2010 releases were awful enough to drop below aMetascore of 20; compare that figure with nine terrible films in 2009 and 12 the year before that.

Overall, 45% of 2010 films received positive reviews from critics, a hair shy of the previousyears mark of 46% and a few percentage points short of the decades best mark, 49%, set in 2007.Yet the average Metascore for all 2010 films ticked up from the year before, from 56.4 to 57.2. Ifwe consider only those films that received a wide release, 26% received positive reviews (thesame figure as in 2009), and the average Metascore of all wide release films was 50.2.

I think Im in a party of one in saying I wasnt impressed by TS3. Sure, there was the inevitablenostalgic tearjerks that would obviously accompany the closing out of such a great series but Ididnt see them really break any new ground- they just retread the best ideas from the first two(especially TS2). And the 3D was nothing great- I kept waiting for a eye-popping visual momentand when it never came it felt like the whole gimic had been a distraction. On the flipside, HowTo Train Your Dragon was a movie built for 3D and it totally succeeded in its amazing aerialaction.

Okay, so I saw The Kids are all right with my two aunts and OMG how did that even get arating. I mean sure if they would have cut the sex scenes and developed the story more i couldtotally see people enjoying the movie. I thought it would be an awesome movie that could open

peoples minds up to gays but it crashed and burned for me.

The best film this year was easily 127 hours. A great plot, backed by terrific editing and music,and truly lifted by one of the best performances of decade. From there on.2) Kick-Ass. A close second and easily best comic book movie this year, which deserved a bestsupporting actress nominee for Chloe.3) The Town4) True Grit. Newcomer Steinfeld and Bridges were great.5) Shutter Island6) Scott Pilgrim VS The World7) Black Swan. Easily best female performance this year by the great Natalie Portman.8) Inception. Wheres Chris Nolans best director nomination? Damn you oscars!9) Toy Story 3. The best of the Toy Story trilogy and tentatively the best animated film of all time.10) Social Network. And undeniably great film, but maybe a tad overrated.

people who does. My top three worst films of 2010 are Cop Out, Vampires Suck and thehorrendously horrible title, The Last Airbender. The cartoon of it is so awesome! The movies justsucks!

oh and Kick-Ass.movies I discovered in 2010 that arent 2010:Stardust-the same director as kick-ass made a fun lighthearted fantasy based on a book byCoraline author Neil GailmanMy Neighbor Totoro: A Japanese animated classic. Even the dub is excellent. from Studio Ghibliand directed by Miyazaki.Ponyo-also Miyazaki. this film is so deceptively simple and revels in its own cuteness. somethings are left to the audience but thats usually easy blanks to fill in. very easyCastle In The Sky-also Miyazaki. best way to describe this movie: if it were made today inAmerica, itd be a live-action summer blockbuster. the dub is miscast though.
