haPPy holidayS

August is a month when many set off on holiday, keen to make the most of the hot weather or to head somewhere cooler to

escape the heat, and many of us want to leave with our minds at rest.

Wherever you’re heading, chances are your home will be empty – an open invitation to burglars. On page 21 we provide some advice for securing your home this summer.

The heat is something we must all deal with, but for our poor pets, plagued with carrying their winter coats around with them all year long, it must be particularly unbearable. We look into options for keeping our pets cool in our vox pop on page 7.

For most of us, an air-condition-ing unit is a sine qua non during these unbearably hot months, but there are various factors to consider when buying a new AC unit, and things one can do to keep it in tip top cooling shape for longer. We look into the matter on page 22.

Summer also gives us more time on our hands – time which can be put to good use by offer-ing to help those less fortunate than us or those who are going through a rough patch. In our cover story we speak to two inspiring individuals who have found the time to help.

This is also the perfect time to look into carrying out some DIY chores around the house, so why not start with the bed-room? Sarah Micallef provides some bedroom-beautifying advice on page 18.

Our interviewee this month is popular local presenter Carlo Borg Bonaci. He tells Jo Caruana all about his long-standing career as a presenter and his involvement with the music scene, as well as his love for his ‘zarbun’.

Enjoy this issue of Best Buy, ideally while sipping a cool drink by the pool.

Feel the difference on Tip Top One, enjoying a full day on the yacht with a delicious lunch and lots of swimming. You can also enjoy the romantic ‘Sun Down Cruise’ with a barbecue at sunset, while sailing along the coast. Prices start from €40 per person. The large deck spaces which include a sitting area, chill-out zone with bean bags and plenty of room for sunbathing on the comfortable net, provide an exclusivity and elegance which is just perfect for private events such as weddings, engagement and birthday parties, as well as incentives.

In recent weeks, the HSBC branch in Swieqi received a major make-over and features a revamped layout providing cashier services. All customers can visit the branch for their personal financial and bank-ing needs while, for improved privacy, Premier customers continue to be served from the branch’s first floor. These developments are in line with HSBC’s €10 million branch refurbishment programme.

The staff members in the branch are trained to help customers make use of the bank’s automated services such as ATMs, internet

banking and phone banking. Over the past years, the bank has invested considerably in Express Banking services, which provide higher levels of cus-tomer satisfaction.“Backed by an investment in training that focuses on delivering superior customer service, the newly re-furbished branch offers cashier facilities, personalised account planning and wealth manage-ment,” said HSBC Malta’s Head of Retail Banking and Wealth Management, Paul Steel.

The Swieqi branch offers continuous service, including extended opening hours from Monday to Thursday between 8.30am and 1.30pm, and be-tween 4 and 7pm. On Friday the Swieqi branch is open between 8.30am and 7pm, and on Saturday between 8.30am and 12.30pm.

The branch is managed by Katherine Borg Costanzi.

generally most of us lead busy lives, which leave us with little time to ded-

icate to ourselves and to those around us, but if we really make an effort, many of us would manage to make some time to help others. This time of year is in fact ideal as a starting point, as we tend to find ourselves with more time on our hands.

The most recent statistics from the National Statistics Office show that in 2011 around eight per cent of persons aged 12 and over were doing some form of voluntary work, and the largest share of these (37 per cent) was aged between 25 and 49. Those in the 50-64 age bracket came next, at 30 per cent.

To inspire us to take the plunge, we spoke to two individuals who are truly dedicated to helping those in need.

JUStiNe bUgeJaJustine begins with an inspiring quote: “We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop” – Mother Teresa

“I will be going to Addis Ababa in Ethiopia, together with eight other volunteers and Fr Mark Cachia of the University of Malta Chaplaincy for a month. During our stay we will be work-ing in the House of the Dying, a hospital run by the Missionaries of Charity.

There we will be nursing and feeding the poorest of the poor, we will help with nursing the wounds and applying bandages, and assisting the sisters on a general level, in whatever they need.

We will also be working in two different orphanages. One of these is run by the Franciscan Nuns, whilst the Little Angels Home is run by Monica Tonna Barthet. We will be spending a few hours every week teaching the children English, playing with them and entertaining them with songs and games.

This is my first experience of voluntary work in a poor coun-try. I hope that it will be an en-riching experience, both for my-self and for the group. Although it is hard to really imagine what

lies ahead until we get there, we will surely be living life from a different perspective than our own, forcing us to dig deep and challenge our beliefs and opin-ions. I am certain that by the end of this experience, I would have received far more than I would have actually given.”

Justine’s Advice“To all those who aspire to do voluntary work abroad, I urge you to follow your dream and make it happen!”

erMiNiette ZaMMit-caMilleri“I had a very active and inter-esting working life as a travel agent/tour organiser and group escort, and on retirement I felt the need to do something com-pletely different and give some-thing back to society, which was what led me to VolServ.

VolServ, organised by SOS Mal-ta, aims to enhance the quality of patients’ overall experience, add value to the work of the

hospital staff and offer reward-ing opportunities for volunteers.

At the time that I joined, Vol-Serv was offering training for persons wishing to volunteer at Mater Dei. With my background in counselling I hoped to make good use of my experience. This, coupled with a wish I always had to build a career in the health sector, was a decid-ing factor. To me this seemed like the next best thing.

I started off acting as a guide, helping people find their way around the hospital, as the hospital is large and most people found it difficult (some still do) to find the right de-partment, clinic or ward. For a while I was attached to one of the wards, running errands for the nursing staff or keep-ing patients company, particu-larly those who did not have visitors or who had a prolonged stay in hospital. For a time I was also at the Renal Department and at A&E.

At present I am attached to the in-patients lending library, where I catalogue and keep track of the books.

Myself, and several members of my family, were hospital patients at one time or an-other and we found help from others, so perhaps a desire to give something back motivates me. One thing which has really changed since I started volun-teering is my perspective of ‘giving’. Difficult to explain, how-ever I feel that although I do not really give much, I receive so much more.

My hope is that my presence will make a difference to others.”

erminiette’s Advice“If you have some time, make good use of it. A few hours a week are enough to slot in a little voluntary work. You will be surprised, as I was, that in giving so little you will actually receive so much more.”

Would you say you are an animal lover? have you got any pets? I love animals, even though I have no pets.

do you think that pets suffer more in summer than we do? I guess so.

Are you aware of any action one can take to make them more comfortable in summer? Just as horses need shelters, I guess all animals need their own cooler space.

Last month we asked you to write in and tell us why you or a nominee deserve to win a Bury hands free CC9048 worth €179, kindly provided by Astral.

The first reply was from Renato Zerafa.

“I am nominating my wife, Si-mone, whose birthday coincides with this issue of Best Buy, for two reasons. First and foremost I know that she hates missing any calls she receives while driving, as she is committed to answering calls in the shortest possible time, as she was taught in her Secretarial School days. Having this system installed in the car will surely be an asset. Furthermore, if she is selected, it will be a nice surprise to find her name printed in the Best Buy issue published on her birthday and it would be one of the surprises I am planning to give her to make this a memora-ble day for her.”

Would you say you are an animal lover? have you got any pets? I have no pets, but I do love animals.

do you think that pets suffer more in summer than we do? I would imagine the Maltese heat is tough on them.

Are you aware of any action one can take to make them more comfortable in summer? I think the most important thing is to ensure that they have a shaded space.

Would you say you are an animal lover? have you got any pets? I love animals and I have a cat.

do you think that pets suffer more in summer than we do? I notice that in the summer months she is slower, due to the heat.

Are you aware of any action one can take to make them more comfortable in summer? We give our cat her own cooler space and make sure she has adequate water.

Would you say you are an animal lover? have you got any pets? I do like animals and am against all forms of animal cruelty. No pets though.

do you think that pets suffer more in summer than we do? Yes, I guess so.

Are you aware of any action one can take to make them more comfortable in summer? As I don’t have pets I’m not quite sure but I imagine keeping them in the shade would help.

During the summer months the weather in Malta gets pretty

unbearable and options for heading out for lunch are somewhat limited, but with dinner it is a completely dif-ferent story. Evenings are generally cooler and most restaurants offer an outdoors option.

Cuisines available in Malta are varied, as in recent years many different restaurants have opened their doors, bringing in Italian, French, greek and Ori-ental cuisines, among others. And eateries range from fast food outlets to pasta-houses and pizzerias, and places serv-ing steaks, fish, seafood, rabbit and other local delicacies.

The food is often of a good standard, however the unique selling point of many Maltese restaurants would definitely be their location. Few European countries can boast of such a rich history, architecture and the same volume of beaches in such a tiny area.

Malta’s capital city, Valletta, is a blend of culture and commerce, and plays host to a number of smaller restaurants and cafete-rias which offer the possibility of dining outdoors. Increasing-ly, restaurants along pedestri-anised Merchants Street are offering seating in designated areas where one can sit and enjoy a bite to eat, while soak-ing up Valletta’s history.

Restaurants along the Valletta Waterfront, on the other hand, give diners the opportunity of dining at the water’s edge, quite literally. There are vari-ous cuisines on offer, ranging from pasta and pizza, to local cuisine, American fare and Chinese delights.

Further afield, Sliema and St Julian’s, both major tourist areas, offer an abundance of coffee shops and restaurants in close proximity of the sea. Res-taurants dot the promenade which leads from Qui-Si-Sana to St Julian’s, ranging in cui-sines from authentic Maltese fare to a variety of wonderful Mediterranean eateries.

A drive further North towards St Paul’s Bay and Mellieha will lead you to some of the best eateries on the island, often with the added bonus of a beautiful sea or country view. Whether it’s simply a small snack or a slap-up dinner you’re after, you will find some-thing to suit your palate.

Moving towards the South of the island one finds a veritable treasure trove of restaurants, with a variety of casual and family-friendly eateries, some in a beautiful historic setting, and a good number of fish restaurants. For a concentra-tion of the best fish restaurants one should doubtlessly make a trip to Marsaxlokk. Definitely well worth the drive, the quaint natural harbour hosts restau-rants serving fresh fish and seafood. As an added bonus many offer outdoor seating, right by the sea.

BRAGJOLI (beef oliVeS)

iNgredieNtS1kg octopus, cut into small pieces2 cloves garlic 2 tbsp fresh lemon juice2 tbsp olive oil100ml white wineSalt and pepperFresh parsley, chopped

MethodCook the octopus in water and lemon juice on a low heat for around an hour.

Next, heat the oil in a separate pan. Fry the garlic and then add the octopus and the wine. Sim-mer until the wine evaporates.

Finally add the parsley, salt and pepper. The dish can be served either warm or cold.

iNgredieNtS4 thinly sliced pieces of beef (around the size of your palm)4 slices lean bacon1 hard-boiled egg, quartered1 clove garlic, finely chopped1 onion, finely chopped1 large potato, quartered1 beef stock cube150g tomato pastegood handful of parsley, finely choppedDash of red wine Can of peasSalt and pepper to tasteToothpicks to fasten

Method Start by placing a slice of beef on a chopping board with a piece of bacon on top. Add a quarter of a hard-boiled egg over the bacon and sprinkle with parsley. Roll into a tight roll and pierce with a toothpick in the middle and at both ends to seal and hold everything in place. Repeat with all four slices.

Heat a small amount of oil in a large pot and brown the brag-joli, then remove from the pan.

You might need to cook them one by one. Once cooked, set them aside.

Sauté the chopped onions and garlic until soft. Add tomato paste and a little water, and stir until well combined.

Add the bragjoli to the pot and cover with boiling water. Next, add potatoes, stock cube, remaining parsley and salt and pepper to taste. Simmer for one hour.

1. Avoid keeping your pets in the sun. Pets can suffer from sunburn too, with their nose, ears and tummy being more susceptible to the sun.

2. Keep your pets indoors when the temperatures are at their highest during the day.

3. Make sure there is enough shade for your pets to take cover when outside, as they can develop heatstroke.

4. Intense activity must be limited when it is very hot outside. If your pets gain weight due to decreased activity levels, adjust daily food intake.

5. Your pets must have access to fresh and clean water at all times. Also note that canned food can go bad when the weather is hot.

6. Never leave your pets in your car – not even for a minute. The temperature rises quickly inside a vehicle.

how would you describe your relationship with money? We’re big enemies. I am always on the chase!

what percentage of your life do you spend shopping?About 15 per cent, or less. I am privileged that my wife knows exactly what I like, so she does most of it for me. Ironically, I often end up returning the things I buy myself, either because the size isn’t right or because I don’t like the fit. On the other hand, the things my wife chooses, stay!

do you think that because something is more expensive it is automatically better? Not always, but sometimes it is worth investing in the ‘real thing’.

what’s a hobby you spend money on?In the past it was my vinyl and CD music collection, but now it would have to be travelling.

how would you describe your style? is fashion an impor-tant part of your life? You do know I’m a guy right? Well, I guess I consider my style to be conservative, cool and casual, with a touch of elegance. Wow, that was a hard one!

what’s the one fashion item you couldn’t live without?

Shoes, definitely shoes! My ‘zarbun’. And watches.

when you plan to shop, where do you tend to go?I do tend to do most of my shopping here in Malta, but I always manage to return from abroad with a jam-packed suit-

case too… so I guess we shop ‘internationally’.

do you collect anything? Music (I must have 10,000-plus songs on vinyl, CD or mp3), age (but that’s none of your business!) and statues of saints (which is funny, but true, and

I have around 250 in different sizes).

what’s your biggest monthly extravagance?Dining out; we’re always on the lookout for a new dining experience, especially when in gozo.

do you hoard things or regularly throw stuff out?My wife is definitely best at the ‘throwing out’ job – whatever’s not in use is no longer welcome in our house!

what’s the best bargain you’ve ever made?I made a brilliant bargain a couple of years back but can-not reveal the details of it as it may ruin its market value locally – sorry! Aside from that, I’ve often picked up some great deals in the January sales.

what is your favourite thing in your whole house? My barbecue set and digital camera.

if you won the million euro lottery what would you do with the money?I’d buy a nice property by the sea and do lots of travelling, mainly exploring Asia and South America.

what three items would you take to a desert island?A pocket mirror to use for communication by bouncing sunrays, fishing tackle in case of a long stay and a port-able digital radio to entertain myself.

what are you most enjoying about summer – are you a summer person?Absolutely not – please bring back my winter! I can’t stand the heat and the fact that you need to go out in the evenings to escape the indoor temperatures. That said, I do love the socialising aspect of summer.

given the choice, would you drink champagne or beer?Neither is the ideal choice for me, but I would pick beer if pushed.

what’s the most money you’ve spent in one go?It was on buying a DJ console back in the 80s. It was worth it though, as I used it at gigs all over the islands.

what would be three things on your ideal celebrity rider? A nice bar of dark chocolate, mineral water and internet access.

if you could dJ alongside anyone, who and where would that be?

It would have to be the legend-ary Frankie Knuckles (Ameri-can DJ, producer and remixer) somewhere on Comino. I know, keep dreaming, Carlo!

what is your favourite music-related item?I’ve got some artist autographs and pictures that I treasure, especially as they relate to my radio and clubbing career.

what would be your last meal?

Fish soup to start, a fenkata for my main course, and helwa tat-tork and baked nuts for dessert. Oh, and a portion of cassatella Siciliana to finish off!

what would you never buy?Favours and a three-letter word… Well, jokes apart, even if I had the money I doubt I would ever buy a personal jet – roam-ing around the airport duty-free lounge and doing a little shopping is all part and parcel of my holiday experience!

a Place to lay yoUr headSarah Micallef bRINgS YOU SOme hANdY TIPS ON hOW TO RevAmP YOUR bedROOm INTO The CAlmINg ANd STYlISh SPACe YOU’ve AlWAYS WANTed TO lAY YOUR heAd.

The bedroom, just like any other room in the house, is made up of several dif-

ferent elements including furni-ture, soft furnishings, flooring and lighting. In order for your bedroom to achieve the desired effect, all these features should work well together. If you’re looking to give your bedroom a new look, there are a number of things you can do that will make a huge difference – from painting, plastering, adding partitions, gypsum works and soffits, to small touches like switching up furniture and soft furnishings, and hanging af-fordable art.

An element that we don’t often give much thought to but which makes a huge difference to any room is lighting. Lighting sets the mood just as much as colour scheme, so think about what you want your bedroom to feel like before deciding on lighting. Jevon gatt of AgF Turnkey highlights popular

lighting trends, saying “every-one has their own ideas, but the most popular light fittings at the moment are ones with a glass trim, which enable light to not only go through the bottom but also show through the sides. Strip lights with LEDS are also popular, some with changing colours.” A spokesperson from Arsenio Projects expands on other popular trends of the moment in relation to gypsum and lighting within the bed-room, maintaining, “a favour-ite trend is having a square (or rounded) bulkhead with a shadow gap and recessed light fittings directly above the bed. For a romantic atmosphere some opt for a light fixture that beams light from the headboard toward the ceiling.”

Overhead lighting often runs the risk of giving the room a harsh feel, so aside from these techniques, try introducing floor or table lamps for a softer effect, or installing a custom

designed soffit to illuminate specific areas you’d like to shed light on. When planning your soffit, Jevon advises keep-ing your bedroom’s layout in mind above all else. “The most important thing is to take the furniture layout into consid-eration, so that the soffit can be worked in relation to it. If the soffit does not respect the furniture, the lighting will not make sense within the environ-ment.” The Arsenio Projects’ spokesperson agrees, stating “the most important thing is to be sure how the furniture is going to be placed. Once that is planned, just leave it to the professionals!”

Once the lighting is right, you can work on colour scheme via walls, furniture and soft furnish-ings like curtains and linens. The trick here is to have a vi-sion in mind, and ensure all the elements work harmoniously. Popular choices of the moment when it comes to bedroom

furniture, according to FXB’s Patrick Spiteri, include “veneer materials with a horizontal grain and a touch of gloss. A popular trend these days is also for the wardrobe to be in a dif-ferent colour to the rest of the furniture.”

If you’re choosing new bedroom furniture, Patrick suggests keeping a few things in mind, aside from aesthetics. “Opt for the most possible space for storage purposes, such as a high wardrobe and even storage systems within the bed,” he advises. “Colours and finishes should be chosen according to the natural light of your room, but the most important thing to consider is the size. If the room is small, for example, you may want to consider a sliding ward-robe instead of a traditional hinged wardrobe.”

The bed is often the main focal point of any bedroom, so chang-ing up your duvet cover and pillow cases will instantly give it a lift. Aside from the utilitarian,

decorative throw, pillows are a great touch and help achieve that coveted ‘put together’ look you often see in interior design magazines. go for bold colours and graphic designs for instant impact, and don’t be afraid to mix and match – matchy matchy is boring, but keep a sense of unity by sticking to a maximum of two complementary colours. While you’re at it, don’t forget your curtains!

Once the main elements are taken care of, it’s time to work on the details. Hang art on your walls that complements your bedroom’s decor, or create a centrepiece using your own framed photographs.

Lastly, a really simple way of adding some life to your bedroom is by doing just that – introducing a couple of house plants or some freshly cut flowers in a beautiful vase. Not only will the flowers look good, but they will also give your bedroom a calming, floral scent that is sure to lift your spirits.

Whether you’re head-ing to gozo, Sicily, France or the USA

the fact remains that you will be leaving your house empty for a couple of days, but there are many ways you can ensure your peace of mind and enjoy a relaxed holiday.

With just a little extra vigi-lance and precautions you can ensure that your property and belongings are safe while you’re away. First and foremost it’s a good idea to consider in-stalling an alarm system, says gary grech of Unitech.

If one wants to relax on holi-day, he continues, this won’t be possible if thoughts of whether the home is safe or not keep occupying your mind. Having an alarm would mean you can put your mind at rest that if anyone were to break in, it would ring, he explains.

Furthermore, if you want, you can organise it in such a way that a friend, relative, the secu-rity company or the police are notified of intruders, as they will be in Malta to check out what would be happening. Addi-tionally an alarm on the facade of the house is a strong deter-rent to potential intruders, Mr grech says, and it is extremely difficult to tamper with.

If you decide to install an alarm system as an after-thought after having built your house, there is no reason to worry, he explains, as today there are

many reliable wireless alarm systems.

“Moreover, there are other options such as CCTV, but this should come as a secondary step, after you have fitted the alarm,” he states.

If you are not keen on install-ing an alarm system, you could consider a house- or pet-sitter as another effective way of making sure your house is safe while you’re away. If you’re lucky you’ll find a kind-hearted and conscientious friend or

relative to move in temporarily and water the plants and feed the pets. If not there are other solutions, though this may be a pricy option.

Alternatively see if you can get a neighbour or relative to drop by the house every couple of days to check the premises, collect your mail and

eliminate any other indicators that nobody’s home. And once they’re there they can water the plants too.

There are also steps you can take to make your home look lived-in – lights which go on and off, or ask a neighbour to take out the garbage and put the bins away, giving the impression that all is as usual at home. Also, if you normally leave your blinds open don’t close them when you go away, as closed blinds give a clear mes-sage that you’re not home. The more lived-in your home looks, the better.

Although it might seem like the most obvious thing, you should avoid telling the

world that you will be away through social networking sites, blogs and other media. Make sure that your children are discreet, too. The less information you put out there, the less likely it is to reach the wrong ears and eyes. Ultimate-ly remember to go and enjoy your holiday! You deserve it!

toP tiPlocking your doors is important, but up to 50 per cent of burglaries involve the use of a key. don't hide a key outdoors in a protected spot, either. burglars know the best hiding places better

than you do.

keePiNg yoUr coolAS AIR-CONdITIONINg TeChNOlOgY KeePS develOPINg, beSt bUy PROvIdeS SOme AdvICe ON WhAT TO lOOK OUT FOR WheN bUYINg A NeW AC UNIT.

The truth is there is noth-ing better than entering an air-conditioned room

on a hot day, but there are numerous factors to consider when buying an AC.

If your current unit has an En-ergy Efficiency Ratio (EER) of eight or less, then it is probably a good time to replace it, as the higher the number is, the more efficient the unit and the less it will cost to run.

The first step is deciding between a window-mounted, portable or wall-mounted AC unit. The former are the most common and have the advan-tage of being low-cost and work with the existent electrical wir-

ing in your home, making them easy to install.

It is also a good idea to meas-ure the rooms to be cooled and to check the EER of the unit. When it comes to cooling capacity, which is measured in BTU/hour (British Thermal Units per Hour), the higher the number, the more powerful the unit is.

Other factors which affect the required capacity include the number and size of the windows, the direction the room faces, available shade, how well the room is insulated and what appliances are found in the room. The easiest way to calculate the required size is to

use one of the online guides, as it is important to get a unit as close to the correct capacity as possible. Too small a unit may not be able to cool the room on a hot day. Too large a unit will cost more to operate. It may also cool the room too quickly and leave excessive moisture in the air.

Whichever unit you eventually decide on, you should expect it to have an adjustable ther-mostat, at least two cooling speeds, two fan speeds and an energy-efficient setting, which stops the fan when the unit is not cooling. The unit should have an adjustable vent, which allows you to aim the cool air, and an exhaust vent setting

allowing fresh air to be intro-duced from outside. The filter should be easily accessible for removal and cleaning. Further-more some units come with an electrostatic filter, either standard or as an option, which will remove extremely small particles from the air, a super feature for people with aller-gies.

Modern Refrigeration Ltd owner Brian Azzopardi recom-mends looking at the unit’s

consumption and making sure that it conforms with ERP (Energy Using Product) regulations before committing to a purchase, and also advises ensuring that it comes with the right guarantee.

He adds that it is always better to buy an AC unit from special-ised shops, as they are in a bet-ter position to give the required advice.

When looking to buy an AC unit get advice and feedback from others who have experience and knowledge. Read reviews and model comparisons from reliable sources, and be on the lookout for complaints about specific models or brands.

Once you’ve purchased your AC, ensure it lasts you longer and cools the place better by sticking to the recommended annual service. This also helps to keep consumption low, Mr Azzopardi explains, adding that the ideal time to have this done would be before summer gets into full swing.
