September 11
On September 11, another day that will live in infamy, several thousandpeople were killed in a devastating terrorist attack in New York Cityand Washington, D.C. Two hijacked passenger planes were deliberatelycrashed into the World Trade Center Towers in New York, and the1,350-foot buildings collapsed within an hour because of the extremeheat from burning jet fuel.
A third hijacked airplane slammed into the Pentagon in Washing-ton, while a fourth, possibly headed for the White House or the Capi-tol, crashed in the Pennsylvania countryside when passengers resistedtheir hijackers.
Suspicion immediately fell on Islamic terrorist Osama bin Laden, whose organization had been responsible for bombings in Africa andthe attack on the USS Cole. President George W. Bush labeled theattack an act of war and vowed to confront terrorism wherever it couldbe found.
Among the first real American heroes of the new century were thecourageous New York City firemen and police officers who plunged intothe inferno trying to assist victims. An estimated 400 firefighters andsome 40 police officers were entombed when the skyscrapers collapsed.
