Perfect for many fuelsAbout three-quarters of the gas turbines in operation today are fired with natural gas, with fuel oil typically used as a backup fuel. The remaining one-quarter use alternative fuels such as residual oils from petroleum dis-tillation, low-caloric gases from natural gas liquefaction, or synthesis gases.

Arguments in favor of using alternative fuels include the benefit of utilizing locally available resources. This sources contain e.g. low calorific gases or gases containing CO2, H2S, and N2, as well as cruide oil and other liquid fuels with high viscosity. The SGT-2000E series gas turbines are also perfectly suited for burning these fuels.

The SGT-2000E series does not require cooling air holes in the blades. This means that it can also process ash- producing fuels like heavy fuel oils that would otherwise block the holes. The upstream external combustion chambers are maintenance-friendly and contribute to the high reliability of the hot gas components. A variety of burners are available depending on the composition of the fuel.

Less maintenance effort, fast repair As early as the design phase, Siemens stands out for the service friendliness of its gas turbines. The scope of maintenance work and the resulting outage times are established during the gas turbines' development.

Thanks to its robust construction, the SGT-2000E series is exceptionally reliable – and service-friendly by design. This begins with the ease of accessibility of all important components. For example, the two separate silo combus-tion chambers are readily accessible for service purposes, making it easy to inspect the hot gas path. Inspection and cleaning of the turbine blades can be easily performed thanks to easy accessibility. Another important benefit is the Siemens rotor design, it enables the de-stacking of the rotor on-site at the power plant ensures that no rotor transport is necessary during major outages.

What do you want to achieve?This is precisely the question that determines how you operate the flexible SGT-2000E series gas turbine. Its operating parameters in turn determine the thermal loading of the components – and hence the length of the mainte-nance intervals. If you want to maximize availability of the electricity supply for your customers, or need the turbine

to drive your equipment in the oil or gas business, you need a totally different maintenance concept than you would for operating a turbine for maximum energy efficiency.

We can provide you with an appropriate maintenance concept designed for your plant operation. For typical oil and gas applications, for example, there is the 41 MAC concept, with 41,000 equivalent operating hours (EOH) between two major inspections and with intermediate maintenance every 8,000 EOH. This keeps maintenance times down, with the direct benefit of higher availability – a different approach from applications where there is greater emphasis on energy efficiency. To meet the higher requirements of thermal stressing of the components and to deliver optimal performance at all times, the interval between two major inspections is reduced to 25,000 EOH – the 25 MAC concept. We continually work to optimize our turbine maintenance concepts, and we ensure as early as the design phase that future adaptations can be applied to today’s machines.

The industrial steam turbine SST-800

Reliable and flexible: the SST-800 The Siemens SST-800 is a single-casing industrial steam turbine with center steam admission that covers the power range from approximately 40 to 250 MW, depending on the applicable live steam parameters. In the SGT-PAC 2000E series packages, it performs exceptionally well as a generator drive at 3,000 or 3,600 rpm with the outstanding efficiency, fast start-up times, and high availability and reliability that Siemens steam turbines are known to deliver. This is the result of using high quality and versatile standard modules optimally matched to each other.

Customer Benefits Features such as a horizontal casing split or the indepen-dently accessible bearings ensure easy and rapid mainte-nance. Additionally, the guide blade carriers enable easy maintainability or further modifications of the steam path. Stop valves and steam strainers as well as control valves are accommodated in the steam chest and can be removed without dismantling the piping.

Powerful and reliable: the SST-4000 seriesAlmost 40 turbines are already in operation or in the com-missioning stage, with a total installed capacity of approx-imately 7,200 MW. The SST-4000 series is our specialized model for dual-pressure, combined cycle applications for 50 and 60 Hz. With the specialized design of the blade path, the entire power range from 100 to 380 MW can be covered with the highest reliability and availability. Appro-priate condensers are also part of our portfolio. Thanks to their systematically modular design, we can easily adapt the SST-4000 series to the individual operating conditions and thermal cycle of your plant. Auxiliary components – the ideal way to complete your package

In our packages, every detail has to be right. Air intake systemOur air intake system comprises the filter housing, filter system, and inlet duct work. The filter housing offers weather protection and prevents large debris from entering the filter system, which removes both large particles and fine particulates from the air stream. Air flow is directed into the gas turbine’s compressor inlet manifold via the inlet air duct.

Exhaust gas systemAfter expanding through the combustion turbine, the gases pass through the exhaust gas diffuser that provides connection to a stack, a heat recovery steam generator, or a diverter and bypass stack.

Control systemThe control system is based on Siemens Power Plant Automation SPPA-T3000 and contains the necessary control, monitoring, and protection equipment. This includes the operation and monitoring system, the automation system, and the interface to the plant control system.

Electrical systemsThe electrical systems supply low-voltage power to the package loads, including battery and battery charger, to provide an uninterruptible direct current power supply. The electrical equipment also includes static exci tation equipment with transformer, starting frequency converter with transformer for static start-up of the gas turbine via the generator, and generator protection and synchroniza-tion equipment.

Power Control Center (PCC)Prefabricated and functional pre- commissioned PCC containers provide compact and weather protected accom-modation for the electrical and I&C (Instrumentation and Control) equipment. Redundant HVAC (Heating, Ventila-tion, and Air Conditioning) units also offer a controlled environment for sensitive equipment.

EnclosuresThis equipment provides noise abatement for the personnel at work via acoustic panels that are installed around the gas turbine.

Fire protectionFire protection includes fire detection and fire fighting and is provided for PCCs.

More than 350 engines working hard worldwide

The 50 Hz version of the SGT-2000E series was introduced in 1981 and its 60 Hz equivalent in 1989. With more than 350 units and additionally over 200 licensed turbines in operation worldwide to date, we have amassed more than 17 million equivalent operating hours (EOH) on the SGT5-2000E and nearly seven million EOH on the SGT6-2000E. At the same time, the fleet’s overall best-in-class reliability exceeds 99.5 percent.

Vuosaari, Finland Geregu II, Nigeria

Hsinta, TaiwanTaiwan Power Company operates the Hsinta combined cycle power plant with a capacity of 2,200 MW. The plant comprises five 442 MW combined cycle units, each with three SGT6-2000E natural gas-fired gas turbines, three heat recovery steam generators, and one non-reheat condensing steam turbine. The gas turbines had accumulated more than 2 million operating hours at the end of 2015.

Shoaiba, Saudi ArabiaThe Shoaiba II combined cycle power plant, owned by Saudi Electricity Company, is located on the coast of the Red Sea in Saudi Arabia. With two symmetrical blocks, each consisting of five SGT6-2000E gas turbines and one SST6-4000 steam turbine, the plant achieves a power output of 1,200 MW, which makes it the most powerful and efficient crude oil plant in the world.

Manchester Street, United StatesManchester Street power station, operated by Dominion Inc., produces electricity and steam for industrial use. The power plant consists of three combined cycle units based on the proven SGT6-2000E gas turbine. Manchester Street power station is among the cleanest and most efficient fossil-fueled power plants in New England using Dry-Low-NOx combustors, and a selective catalytic reduction system to reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides.

References 50 Hz market

Vuosaari, FinlandVuosaari power plants, operated by Helen Ltd., have a total power output of 630 MW and deliver district heating and electricity to over half of the population of Finland’s capi-tal Helsinki. Vuosaari B, commissioned in 1998, is based on two SGT5-2000E gas turbines. With a total efficiency rate of more than 90%, Vuosaari is one of the most effi-cient and environmentally friendly power plants in Europe.

Az Zour, Kuwait The Ministry of Electricity and Water operates the 1.6 GW power plant consisting of eight SGT5-2000E gas turbines and two SST5-4000 steam turbines. The Az Zour power plant was constructed in 2004 in simple cycle configuration with 960 MW of power output and was transformed in 2010 into a combined cycle power plant. The power plant serves the energy needs of the growing population in Kuwait.

Geregu II, NigeriaThis 434 MW simple cycle power plant was built for the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC). As part of the turnkey construction project, Siemens supplied three SGT5-2000E gas turbines. Geregu II has strategic impor-tance for grid stability and is a key project for the power supply in Nigeria, helping the country to meet its increas-ing power demands. Geregu II is a follow-up project to the Geregu I power plant, which is also based on three SGT5-2000E gas turbines.
