PRESIDENT’S CORNER2015 Local Organization President: Maria Isabel Manalo I have been pondering for days, but still can’t find the right words to start off this message. As I reminisce on the year that has passed, all that I have been envisioning in my mind are all the projects, meetings, inductions, and other JCI activities that my members and I have been to over the course of my term. Its been a great privilege and opportunity to have been given the chance to become a JCI Lipa Chapter President. I can’t believe that my ONE YEAR TO LEAD is over. I can still clearly remember when I assumed my presidency last October of 2014; from day 1 I told myself… “this is going to be a long ride.” Indeed, it has been long, but very fruitful nonetheless. For this 4th edition of THE BARAKO I would like to THANK from the bottom of my heart, my 59 members who have supported me thru my ONE YEAR TO LEAD. I can’t name you one by one because of the limited paper space. But I will thank you personally and formally at our upcoming 47th Induction and Turnover Ceremonies this 2016. To the incoming 2016 Board, headed by 2016 President Paolo, I salute you for accepting this challenge. I wish you and the rest of the board good luck and I will continue to support our work in creating positive change. As a final note, I ask each member to take our JCI Values to heart. It is in these tenets that we will fully understand what and how we can create positive change. There is a calling for all of us to BE BETTER, for ourselves and our community. Always remember… I am for positive change. Mabuhay ang JCI Lipa!

2016 Local Organization President:Jose Paolo Katigbak 2016 marks the 101th year of the JCI movement. Local organizations across the nation unite, adopting the theme “Build As One” to achieve JCI’s mission of providing development opportunities that empower young people to create positive change. I envision the elements of this amazing term drawn in a circle, separated by two lines into four quadrants. Every quadrant has its story, its ups and downs, and its highlights. Like life, it has a start and an end, One Year To Lead. At the start of the term, it is of utmost importance to Prepare. JCI Lipa’s 2016 Board of Directors will go through various team development activities to ensure that the year ahead will be a prosperous one. Likewise, various fund raising activities will be set in place to ensure our liquidity, as well as, some recruitment preparation to strengthen membership in the coming months. Building Up is the next stage of this cycle. Early next year will be JCI Lipa’s recruitment period, a series of Opportunity to Impact seminars will be rolled out to ensure prospective members get to ride the wave early on. JCI Lipa’s Induction and Turnover Ceremonies is also scheduled to take place, and that will surely be crazy good! After Preparing and Building Up, it’s time for the Big Wave! There will be membership retention programs in place, which include high impact community and business projects, the JCI Week celebration, and National Programs. These projects are opportunities that members can take advantage of to empower themselves and get them to further develop their leadership skills. After the Big Wave, it’s high time to Turn Over. Sometime during the last leg of my term will be chapter elections. This will bring forth the people who will pave the way to next year’s legacy. Also happening during this quarter, are the most anticipated events that will glorify every blood, sweat and tear our dear JCI Members have contributed during the term. These are the Southern Luzon Area Conference (SOLAC) and National Conference (NATCON) wherein the best of the best projects get awarded, chairmen recognized, presidents praised and local organizations envied. With the support of my Board of Directors and Members, I believe we will make JCI Lipa and everyone who stands by it, proud. This rollercoaster ride of how I imagine things happening gives the chapter time to prepare, build, make big waves, and nourish the future by turning over to our future leaders in JCI. I am excited, empowered and honored to serve this year as JCI Lipa’s 2016 LO President.

Daily life can be very difficult in Sitio Hillview, but education and proper healthcare can be the key to improving a person’s survival and pave a way out of poverty. In line with building the Daycare Center, JCI Lipa also collaborated with other sectors such as private businesses, local government and organizations to facilitate initiatives focused on education and healthcare in the daycare site. JCI Calamba Dimasalang and JCI Los Baños supported the project by engaging in the painting of the daycare and instalation of fixtures. Furthermore, Universal Robina Corporation built an eco-friendly playground built outside the daycare grounds. When the daycare opened, JCI Lipa collaborated with Lipa City Councilor Kaye Briones for the “Bags to School” project and gave out school bags and supplies to children. A month long feeeding program was also done in partnership with JCI Perlas Pasay. By building the daycare center, JCI Lipa pushes the limits to how we contribute to building the nation and creating positive change, we must step up to ensure that children are given the opportunity to receive the quality education and care they need for their long-term development.

Partners in Trainingby Cayo Katigbak

“JCI is a leadership nurturing organization.” this statement is an excerpt from the valedictory speech of 2015 National President Brian Lim during the National Convention in Dagupan. Truly, JCI as an organization gives young active individuals the opportunity to better themselves, to develop their character and potentials, through various initiatives. One of the most consistent means of developing members is through the JCI trainings. JCI Philippines offers official and unofficial courses all aimed for progressive growth. Last August 15, 2015, JCI Pateros Balut and JCI Lipa collaborated for a joint training on Effective Leadership, and a module on Public Speaking, dubbed as Mastering the Mic. JCI Pateros Member and RTD Abraham Ison facilitated the Admin training, while the special training on public speaking was facilitated by JCI Lipa Member Juan Teodoro “Cayo” Katigbak. Cayo was JCIPs representative for the public speaking competition in the recently concluded ASPAC2015.

Tanauan Transcends by Phillip Gallendez, JCI Tanauan Laubini

March 15, 2015 was when the Junior Chamber International Philippines initiated action to revive Tanauan City as a former part of the Jaycees via the Opportunity To Impact (OTI). JCI Lipa led by Pres. Aysa Manalo and JCI Alabang with Pres. Aimee Flordeliza, jointly took initial actions to achieve this desired goal.

On the same date, JCI in Tanauan was organized and an election was held hailing Marco Amurao as President. On later meetings, the Board of Directors was then appointed.

Assistance from JCI Lipa did not end there. Pres. Aysa continuously supported and responded to all inquiries of Pres. Marco until its affiliation with the organization as a new chapter called JCI Tanauan LauBini.

The newly organized Local Organization coped up with the protocols and programs of the JCI promptly. The chapter was very active and already hosted the Regional Sportsfest, 4 months after its’ inception; and held their 1st Induction after 5 months. Its members religiously attend regular Area and Regional meetings and represented their LO in the Southern Luzon Area Conference (SOLAC) in Iriga and the National Convention (NATCON) in Dagupan.

THE BIRTH OF TWO CHAPTERS:The Story of Tanauan and Balayan

JCI Tanauan LauBina had already implemented a number of initiatives focusing on education, environment, leadership and health as core areas. The chapter president attributes these milestones to the very able assistance, guidance, and motivation of JCI Lipa Legacy President Aysa Manalo.

“She is always at my back saying that it can always be done” says Pres. Marco. “She keeps on giving me tips on handling the LO and get me involved in almost all meetings and activities”.

Todate, in their maiden year, Tanauan already received their Bronze Efficiency Award in JCIPEA in the NatCon indicating their active involvement and effective project implementation. They were also recipient of the Dangal Award in the SOLAC.

It was a tall order making a prestigious organization exist in a busy city unsure the outcome that it may bring. However, it did not hinder JCI Lipa in pursuing the dream. Thus, the birth of its new baby was realized. The organization was founded and manned by people of diverse background which proved to be in perfect harmony. Its been a great year, and JCI Tanauan is here to stay for the long haul.

Building Balayan by Jhaz Andal, JCI Balayan

BUNSOLipa’s first NMO/GMM in Balayan was named BUNSO, a Filipino term which means the youngest. Balayan Chapter is considered the youngest daughter of JCI Lipa. The very first OTI I chaired, was held last September 19, 2015 at Agot’s Bar and Resto, graced by JCI Lipa members and BOD, with Gerry Deuda as our Trainer. As a JCI member only since March, I affirm my belief that there are so many promising young, active, leaders/citizens in my hometown. Enough reason why I and the 2015 Lipa LO President Aysa Manalo and her husband PP Atty. Mark Lester Manalo had the idea of putting up the Balayan Chapter.

THE IDEAIt was in 2013 when I first met young public servants like me, who were JCI members. One colleague asked me then, JCI ka rin? And then I answered, anong JCI? And then he explained a little. I got intrigued but without any idea how can I become a member nor where or what group would I belong. But I told myself then, I want to be a member and I want to have a chapter in Balayan.

THE MACAU INSPIRATIONA year passed after that idea and nothing happened. It was only in November last year (2014) when finally, the idea found an inspiration. I was so privileged to receive a complimentary ticket from Pambansang Kamao Cong. Manny Pacquiao to watch his fight against Chris Algieri in Macau. This was possible thru my friend and colleague, Laguna Board Member Angelica Jones-Alarva, who is the charter president of Hijas de San Pablo. Luckily, we had with us, the then (2014) President of Biñan Jing Abarca. We were roommates. These two ladies always talk about their JCI plans and activities. And then there, they finally explained the details to me. Before we returned to the Philippines, the idea of being a member is now getting nearer to reality (malapit na sa katotohanan). In fact, I held the JCI banner (supporting Pacquiao) during the fight like I’m a proud JCI member already.

INSPIRED TO DO ITDecember 2014 – In time for the preparation for the NMYL (National Movement of Young Legislators) where I am also connected. I together with BM Angelica Jones and BM Kaye Briones of JCI Lipa, met for a short catching up after our ocular visit to our party’s venue. That’s the time when they decided that I should be a member, and preferably in Lipa. So after another month, finally I was able to attend the NMO/OTI. I was inducted in March of this year… And then the rest is history.

THE EMERGENCE OF BALAYAN’S WORLD CLASS LEADERSIn my goal of emerging the world-class leaders of Balayan, I pursued my dream of making a legacy – the chartering of JCI Balayan. Last October 31, 2015, we held our 2nd wave for the NMO/OTI which was attended by old and new members. Training became very lively and joyous because of the very energetic Trainer, Mignodel Morales. And I was so right! Balayan’s young citizens are so promising! Seeing them and knowing that they are very willing to be a part of JCI really overwhelms me, and during my closing remarks for the OTI, I became very emotional. Many thanks to all the people who supported me. You know who you are, my sincere thanks to all of you.

THE VERY FIRST GMM AND FELLOWSHIP NIGHTAfter the second wave of Balayan’s NMO/OTI in My Place Resort and Pavilion, our very first General Membership Meeting was conducted. Attended by 18 out of 26 members, the said GMM was a success! Agenda were presented and were deliberated accordingly. Election of BOD was also done. And after all of the day’s hard work, a sumptuous and festive boodle fight was served to complete the Balayan experience of the new members and most specially the guests from different chapters and officers from the Regional Board. Regional Vice president Erwin Ellazar graced the event, together with the LO Presidents and members of Lipa, Tanauan Laubini, and Lucena.
