7THE BEST MAGAZINE SPRING 2014
It has been a long and cold winter and finally Spring is showing it is here to stay! Winter’s snow, ice and bitter cold can be rough on vehicles so prepare your car for warm-weather driving with these
maintenance tips.
1. Schedule an Inspection“The first thing drivers should do is to have a technician look for
damage caused by winter driving,” says Tony Molla, Vice President
of Communications at the National Institute for Automotive Service
Excellence (ASE) and an ASE-certified technician. Your mechanic
also can perform regular maintenance tasks such as changing the
oil, inspecting the brakes, topping off fluids, aligning the vehicle
and checking the condition of hoses and belts.
2. Change Your TiresSome drivers switch to seasonal tires during winter.
“If you’re using actual snow tires, change them to all-season tires in
the spring,” Molla says. If you drove on all-season tires throughout
the winter, check for baldness and be sure to have them rotated
when spring arrives. And don’t forget to regularly test your tires
pressure, which can be affected by changing temperatures.
3. Swap the WipersWinter weather can wear out wipers. “Treat your winter wiper blades
like snow tires,” Molla says. “Replace them with standard all-purpose
blades.” You also may need new wipers if your blades are cracked
or torn, or if they leave streaks on your windshield.
4. Inspect the BatteryHave your battery tested and replaced if necessary. Molla
recommends drivers also inspect battery terminals. “If you notice
any visible corrosion you can carefully clean it with baking soda and
a wire brush,” he says. Molla cautions that car owners should work
in a well-ventilated area and wear proper safety glasses and rubber
gloves when conducting this task. “If you’ve noticed any trouble
starting your car during the winter, such as slow cranking speed
when you start the engine, you should have a certified technician
check your charging system and battery condition.”
5. Clean Your CarExtend spring cleaning to the driveway. “You should try to hand-
wash your car when weather permits,” Molla says. This helps remove
corrosive salt and abrasive sand. Two important areas to wash are
the wheel wells and underbody. Inside the car, remove floor mats,
vacuum the floors and upholstery and dry out any damp areas.

WHO IS YOUR SPOUSE: DESIGNATED BENEFICIARIES, A WORD TO THE WISE
BY CLAUDIA FALQUEZ-WARKENTIN • LAWYER •
Reality, and what we believe is real, are two very different things. As Maria Dorothea Heidler describes in Scientific American – Mind (Volume 25, Number 2, March/April 2014), “our brains lead us to believe false truths” a phenomenon
called confabulation, that is, “how we construct our personal sense of what is real – and what is not.”
Ms. Heidler describes the case of a 73-year old man who lived in a home for the elderly in Germany. A nurse asked him about his weekend and he said: “Oh, my wife and I flew to Hungary, and we had a wonderful time!” - It turns out that his wife had passed away five years ago and he had not left his home in months. Ms. Heidler wondered if he was just trying to impress the nurse or perhaps was he confabulating?
Maybe the 73-year old man was ill; however, often reality is what each person consciously makes it out to be. In this case, a word to the wise: the person you may believe to be your spouse may not match the legal definition of “spouse”, under the law. To protect a spouse in the event of death, or to protect property and income in the event of divorce, it is first necessary to verify the legal definition of “spouse” under the correct legislation.
If care is not taken to identify who will be the “spouse” in receipt of benefits under the Life Insurance, Pension or RRSP plan at the time of death; or in the event these designations are not consistent with a properly drafted will, a marriage/cohabitation or a separation agreement, that special someone may be in for a rude awakening to a very different legal reality from yours.
More importantly, your wishes will be trumped. Consider the following:
It is possible to have two spouses at the same time. In Carrigan vs. Carrigan Estate, Mr. Carrigan had been married and separated from his first spouse a few years before his death. On his death, he had been in a common law relationship. Mr. Carrigan had
designated his first spouse as the beneficiary of his Pension plan and did not change this designation on separation. Upon his death, both the first (still married) spouse and the common law spouse entered into a dispute over the pension pre-retirement benefits. The Court of Appeal held that neither spouse qualified as a “spouse” as defined by the Pension Benefits Act and decided the designated beneficiary would receive the benefits, who happened to be the first spouse.
You remarry and believe that your second spouse will receive your Pension benefits. In King v. King the court held that since the first wife had not properly released her right to the pension benefits in the separation agreement, the second wife did not qualify as “spouse” under the Pension legislation ending up being excluded, contrary to Mr. King’s wishes.
You may believe you are single and have no spouse: A man decided not to cohabit with his partner to protect himself from a division of his property and called the relationship “dating”. The courts did not agree with the argument, and found he was in a common-law relationship as a “spouse”. In this case, his “spouse” received spousal support and compensation for contributions to his property.
Confabulation is a trick of the brain, however too often we all fall prey to beliefs that may not be true. Our job as legal advisors is to test your view of reality against the law to ensure your real wishes are ultimately met.

REAL ESTATE SPRING MARKET BY FRANCISCO GARZON
ECONOMY AND FINANCE ECONOMÍA Y FINANZAS
Is spring the time for buying or selling? This is a challenging
question that may be answered and explained by an
experienced REALTOR® using market statistics and trends,
macroeconomic data, and a firsthand knowledge of the
market.
The spring market is dynamic and fast paced. Although the
inventory of houses available remains limited spring is the
time of year when the amount of houses on the market
reaches a maximum. Interest rates are still at historic lows and
high demand makes the buying/selling process extremely
competitive and aggressive. Prices will continue to increase.
After one of the coldest and whitest winters in recent years for
the GTA, the real estate market is waking up a little late and
many Economic Gurus and Bankers are projecting strong sales
for 2014 real estate market. Why? Because there continues
to be a real demand (no speculation) of buyers and families
looking for housing and strong economic perspective.
The Sellers PerspectiveTo switch your current home for a bigger property may be
a good strategy at this time. The market for smaller houses
shows higher demand than that for bigger houses. It would
make sense to take advantage with today’s very low interest
rates and step up in your creation of equity. Competition
will allow Sellers to receive good prices for their houses as
long as they have a well-defined price, the help of a qualified
professional and effectively showcase the property.
The Buyers PerspectiveEntry level houses show limited inventory and first time home
buyers need a REALTOR® that is a good negotiator, will prepare
them and must know how to move fast in this kind of market;
first time home buyers must also be
mortgage prequalified.
Buyers must be prepared for a fight in today’s multi-offer
competition situations. Conditional offers will not stand a
good chance and buyers must be ready to take risks and
make decisions on their feet. In order to create a firm yet
unconditional offer it is suggested that you conduct a
pre-qualification with your bank and an inspection before the
offer presentation date.
Prices are still affordable according to the most recent Royal
LePage Survey (2014). Prices will not slow down in a market
who has high demand, limited inventory and low interest rates.
Do not be crazy, but rather smart and ready to take risks. Go
ahead and invest in your future.

Case Study:
Carlos and Pilar, professionals, came to Canada when they were 35 years old. After 5 years they were able to find a position in their professional field. Carlos now is making $ 70,000 a year and Pilar $ 40,000. They heard that they don’t need to save for retirement since Canada’s Government pension will take care of them.
This is what this couple will get from the Government Sponsored Pension Plans:
Carlos’ qualifying period is 25 years (63%) and he is making more than the YMPE ($51,100), then he could get around $ 600 dollars a month from CPP and $ 300 from OAS, for a total of $ 900 dollars, of today’s money when he is 65.
Pilar has the same qualifying period, but since she is making less than the YMPE, her CPP will be reduced to approximately $ 400 dollars a month and her OAS would be the same $ 300, the reason being is that OAS only qualification criteria is years of residency.
* Assuming Pension Splitting and a 20% average tax.
In conclusion, if this nice couple relies only on Government pension, $ 1,280 dollars a month will not be enough for their retirement. They will need to complement their retirement income with the other two pillars of Pension in Canada that we will discuss in the next articles.
To analyze your current financial situation and how to achieve your retirement goals, consult with your Financial Advisor.
In summary this is their situation:

SORPRESAS DESPUÉS DE ENVIAR SUS IMPUESTOS
SURPRISES AFTER FILING YOUR TAXES
BY /POR HENRY LOPEZ BBA, CPM
etc.).
T he Notice of Assessment is the evidence of your
return’s information was received and processed
according to your CRA account’s information
reported for you and third parties
(your employer, financial institutions,
Employment Insurance, spouse,
ex-spouse, etc.).
The Notice of Assessment
can have adjustments, some
of them in your favor or
definitely it becomes bad
news.
The first step you have to do
is read carefully your Notice
of Assessment and review each
adjustment made by the CRA to
discard lack of information regarding
your income, or not inclusion of any form
required in your return. There may also be
inconsistencies in your return’s preparation.
If after analyzing the adjustments you are not agree with the
Notice of Assessment, you can contact CRA or can authorize a
representative to do it. You have the right to request a review
of your case and filing an objection. The time limit to file an
objection is 90 days from the date on the Notice of
assessment.
At this point hire an expert to guide you and explain the
different alternatives and procedures might be the best
option to ensure the success of your case.

ECONOMY AND FINANCE ECONOMÍA Y FINANZAS
FIXED-RATE VS. VARIABLE-RATE: Which One is The Right for You?
By Katherine Lozano
FIXED RATE VARIABLE RATE
• Offers a specific interest rate that is fixed or “locked-in” for the term of the mortgage.
• You will know what to expect in terms of interest rate, regular payments, what portion of your payment goes to interest and how much to principal. As well, the length of the amortization period.
BEST FOR YOU IF :
• You prefer consistent payments• Your goal is to pay the mortgage over a longer term• You enjoy the predictability offered by a fixed rate• You expect interest rates to increase, and prefer to lock in
a lower interest rate• If the difference between the variable rate and the fixed
rate is not substantial, so it is worth paying the premium for the stability
• You plan on keeping the mortgage for the full term (the penalty associated to breaking the contract is the higher of 3-months interest or the IRD)
• You qualify only using the current fixed rate (for a 5 years term)
• Variable rate mortgages typically offer a lower interest rate than fixed rate mortgages
• It is typically stated as prime plus/minus a percentage discount/premium. Prime-0.55% for example.
• The Bank of Canada adjusts the prime rate depending on the state of the economy
• Your payment amount stays fixed for the term as long as the amount is sufficient to cover the interest cost. If prime rate goes down, more of your payment will go towards paying off principal; if prime rate goes up, more of your payment will go towards interest costs.
BEST FOR YOU IF :
• You want to keep the mortgage for only a short period of time (lower penalties when breaking the contract, it is always 3-months interest)
• You want to take advantage of the variable lower rate by making payments as if you had the fixed rate
• If you expect interest rates to fall with some certainty• If you can qualify using Mortgage Qualifying Rate (MQR)
which is higher than the fixed rate. 4.99% on April 2014
What are we as Canadians doing?According to Canadian Association of Accredited Mortgage Professionals (CAAMP) Nov 2013 Consumer Report: “the share for fixed rate mortgages is similar for first-time buyers and for repeat buyers. However, for borrowers with less than 20% down-payments, 86% were fixed rate mortgages”, cases where qualification and budget stability are most likely critical. The final decision is yours. Evaluating your options will help you to get the most suitable mortgage to meet your needs and help you get closer to your financial goals.
Mortgage type PercentageFixed-rate 66%
Variable-rate 26%
Combination 8%

When you apply for a mortgage, you have to select between fixed-rate and variable-rate terms. Depending on your current financial situation, credit score, qualification and your comfort level
with fluctuating rates, both types of interest rates can be beneficial. To make an informed decision, you should learn more about these two options.

THE SPRING EFFECT
Developed countries are
located in zones where
climatic conditions are
more extreme
and dramatic.
According to
UN (United Nations) indices,
these countries enjoy the
best life, health, security and
are highly and effectively
productive. Low levels of
corruption, high salaries,
low inflation levels, and
a high dose of respect for
people’s values are typical too.
Norway, Finland, England, United States,
Australia, Germany, The Netherlands,
Canada, Japan, the Koreas, and Russia
among others are located in regions
influenced by extreme seasons with generally
long cold periods.
It is evident that as time went by, these
countries learned the meaning planning and
preparation had for their survival. Evidently in these
countries, seasons generate a unique dynamism.
Canada and the metropolitan area of Toronto have
just been through one of the coldest winters with
one of the highest amounts of precipitation of the
last 15 years. For many of us, this was the first time
we face a true winter. Even with the extreme cold
and after enduring one of the worse ice storms on
record, life kept going and the city kept rolling while
people normally faced the cold just for a few minutes or while
waiting for the train or bus. Due to the ice storm, some had
to leave their homes to face in some way what “First Nations”
people have faced all their life. Many 100 year old trees
that could not
bear the weight
of a more than
ever colder
and heavier
ice fell and left
many people
without a roof.
Those who
have lived
in Quebec
make fun of
the Torontonians
because they say
we do not know what
true cold really is. That
is because when we
faced a minor 10
to 15 centimeter
snowfall classes are cancelled
while in Montreal it takes at least
one meter of snow to cancel
school or buses.
Countries in Latin America
are generally located in
regions blessed by great
climate but these countries
are not as prosperous, as
mangoes just fall from trees

and you do not even need to make a plan
to grow them. Because nobody really
suffers from dealing with the cold, because
the land provides fruits and vegetables
without any major effort and even harvests
go bad because there is not even a way
to pick them up, people are raised in a
culture where there is no planning and
some degree of slothfulness. Revitalization
and re-energizing time comes during New
Years’ celebrations but is used more as a
time to party than as an effort to change
the way things are.
Here is where the Spring Effect is visible and understandable.
After winter, everything tends to be
renovated. Even the spirit invites to enjoy
the good weather but at the same time
reminds you to start preparing for the next
winter.
With the coming of spring, promises and
changes are made in businesses and
industries are energized by the push from
consumers. People change vehicles,
homes, clothing, and furniture. Sidewalks
start to fill up with old mattresses, old
furniture, and old books. “Garage sales”
pop up everywhere where some sell at
incredible prices what they do not like or
need anymore and others buy stuff they
may not even know why they buy it but
they buy because it is cheap.
The Spring effect comes with growing or
harvesting to try to make the most use of
the good weather spring brings which will
be followed by the awaited summer. Golf
courses open their doors for short but very
busy seasons and golfers long for this time.
Gardening supply stores and landscaping
people enjoy their best time with multiple
contracts. Windows
get cleaned, grass is
aerated, windows,
doors and fences
get painted, decks
are built, patios and
pools get set for a
short season of use;
tents and camping
equipment are sold,
some go fishing,
cottages are open
for vacation time,
motorcycles, boats and
yachts are sold….the
economy gets moving,
jobs are created, there
is dynamism.
The spring effect is magical and generates a spirit of change and improvement that energizes industries, service companies, grocery and specialized stores, everything!
Additionally in 2014 we will live the
fever for the Brazil World Cup of soccer
where many businesses invest highly in
promotional items, travel agencies make
great profits, advertising agencies develop
their strategies, TV sales go through the
roof, and cable companies sell their special
World Cup bundles.
Although it may seem as if this
generates a consumerist effect, it certainly
generates jobs, stimulates industries and
commerce, the economy creates synergies
and we all progress.
Everything seems to suggest 2014
will be a good year for the economy.
Welcome the spring effect, welcome to
growth and enjoy the World Cup.

When spring rolls around, it’s time to think about some important maintenance around your home. In fact, first things first, if you have any issues that popped
up during winter, you should take the time to fix them now. It’s easiest if you start a to-do list in order of priority so you can get these maintenance issues knocked out fairly quickly.
Standing Water. The weather can wear away at your landscaping so while you’re inspecting your outdoor areas, keep an eye out for low spots in your yard. Fill those holes with packed dirt and grass
seed to prevent flooding issues and excess mud.
Check Exposed Wood. If your home has exposed wood around doors and
windows, decking, or even on an outdoor building, it’s important to
check it for rot or termites. Simply take a screwdriver and poke around the exposed wooden areas to look for damaged wood and deterioration. Catching wood rot early can mean the difference between replacing one board or a whole deck.
Check for Leaks. While you’re
working outdoors in early spring,
check your gutter system for leaks
and make repairs. Winter can weigh
heavy on your gutters and downspouts
and with the rain heading your way, you’ll
want them working properly. You should also make
sure the water correctly drains away from your home’s foundation.
Check the AC Unit. If your home has air conditioning units, whole home or window units, now is the time to inspect and
test them. You don’t want to wait until the heat of summer to find problems with your air conditioning system.
acondicionado.

MANTENIMIENTO
DE PRIMAVERA.By /Por Jorge Davila Jones
29THE BEST MAGAZINE SPRING 2014
Before you go What to Take
Safety begins with what you pack. To avoid being a target, dress conservatively. Don’t wear expensive-looking jewelry. A flashy wardrobe or looking too casual can mark you as a tourist. As much as possible, avoid the appearance of affluence.
Always try to travel light. You can move more quickly and will be more likely to have a free hand if you travel light. You will also be less tired and less likely to set your luggage down, leaving it unattended. Carry the minimum amount of valuables necessary for your trip and plan a place or places to conceal them. Your passport, cash and credit cards are most secure when locked in a hotel safe. When you have to carry them on your person, you may wish to conceal them in several places rather than
putting them all in one wallet or pouch.
Avoid handbags, fanny packs and outside pockets that are easy targets for
thieves. Inside pockets and a sturdy shoulder
bag with the strap worn across your
chest are somewhat safer. One of the safest places to carry valuables is in a pouch or money belt worn under your clothing. If you wear glasses, pack an extra pair. Bring them and any medicines you need in your carry-on luggage.
NOTE: To avoid problems when passing through customs, keep medicines in their original, labeled containers. Bring copies of your prescriptions and the generic names for the drugs. If a medication is unusual or contains narcotics, carry a letter from your doctor attesting to your need to take the drug. If you have any doubt about the legality of carrying a certain drug into a country, consult the embassy or consulate of that country first.
Bring travelers checks and one or two major credit cards instead of cash.
Pack an extra set of passport photos along with a photocopy of your passport information page to make replacement of your passport easier in the event it is lost or stolen.
Put your name, address a nd telephone numbers inside and outside of each piece of luggage. Use covered luggage tags to avoid casual observation of your identity or nationality. If possible, lock your luggage.
Consider getting a telephone calling card. It is a convenient way of keeping in touch. If you have one, verify that you can use it from your overseas location(s). Access numbers to U.S. operators are published in many international newspapers. Find out your access number before you go.
A Few Things to Take & Leave Behind
• Make two photocopies of your passport identification page, airline tickets, driver’s license and the credit cards that you plan to bring with you. Leave one photocopy of this data with family or friends at home; pack the other in
a place separate from where you carry your valuables.
• Leave a copy of the serial numbers of your travelers’ checks with a friend or relative at home. Carry your copy with you in a separate
place and, as you cash the checks, cross them off the list.

What is an infomercial?
An infomercial is a short or regular-length video that combines information presentation with an integrated suggestion to buy a particular product or service.
Videos are useful for explaining complex how-tos or concepts. Showing step by step directions can have a greater impact than even the most well written article. Businesses don’t have to invest huge sums of money to create good videos, either. I highly recommend to contact a professional video provider in order to get the best results, but at the same time, you can make them with your home’s cam-recorder and use a free software to edit them and share them in the social network.
There are 25 billion videos watched each month in the US alone. That’s billion, with a “B.” So it should be no surprise that web video offers an important opportunity for small businesses to connect with a wider audience. For small business owners, online video represents a chance to reach thousands or potentially millions of people using a relatively simple and inexpensive format.
Here some tips in How to do an Infomercial:
Decide what the infomercial will promote. You need to plan whether your infomercial will promote a service your small business provides, a single product it sells, or a group of products and services you offer.
Develop a budget. An online infomercial will cost less than a televised spot. Determine how much your small business can spend on this.
Write a script. Come up with creative words, videos, pictures, testimonials, and footage of your service or product working.
Start by describing the product or service your small business provides. Discuss its benefits and how it can help the people watching your infomercial.
Include testimonials. Ask people or companies who have worked with your small business to talk about their positive experiences. Avoid using actors. Real people who have used your products and services are essential.
Shoot the Infomercial. Either you or your video company provider, shoot the video - Edit it and test it with some friends and family.
Finally, use social networking to promote your infomercial. You can post the link on your small business website, and share it on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms.
How I know if the infomercial is worthy?
It’s actually fairly simple. Ask the customer.
If you want to find out how a consumer feels about a product, go ask them. However, like many aspects of entrepreneurship, you may never really know what you’re going to get until you just do it.
So try it NOW!

INFOMERCIAL: SHOULD I USE IT!T he term “A picture is worth a thousand
words” has never been truer. Consumers are now using the web to look for product
pictures and videos; they want more information and want to see what they’re considering buying. The good news is that it’s easy for a company to create and publish videos and pictures. I am going to concentrate only in the videos, more specifically infomercials.

TRANSLATING IS NOT A COPY-AND-PASTE GAME OF WORDS
Translations need to evolve into creation
T he Government of
Canada has identified
Latin America as a
priority market based
on extensive consultation with
government agencies, academics
and Canadian businesses. Important
companies and investments are
flowing into the region, expanding
their markets and establishing
themselves in different countries.
Not to mention that the election
of Toronto as the host of the
Pan-American Games in 2015
has expanded the range of
opportunities and exposure of the
Spanish language to the world.
As a bilingual country, Canada has
always had a significant amount
of translation companies offering
their services, mainly for official and
commercial documents between
English and French. However
the increment of different ethnic
populations within the GTA has
helped those translation companies
to expand their services into
different languages and start offering
their services for local and national
clients. However these translation
companies often forget an essential
element: the cultural touch.
Finding the right words can mean the difference between success and failure
Translating from English to
Spanish is no longer a process of
copy-and-paste to translate words.
Translating from English to Spanish
has evolved into a deep process
to protect the intention of the
message and adapt powerful ideas,
while maintaining all the flavour
of the language to communicate
creative ideas and concepts.
Unfortunately the problem is that
the translation of English material
to Spanish has often been done
haphazardly and superficially which
has nonsensical translations that
leave people in the dark.
The world is becoming more
competitive by the second and many
Americans and Canadian companies
can no longer pretend that they are
going to get away with messages that
have been superficially translated
through magical “websites” to make
people buy their products or services. They
have to do things right from the beginning.
This is more than a lack of professionalism;
this is a lack of respect for Hispanic language,
history and culture.
Translations need to evolve into creation. If
they want to sell us their products and services,
they will have to talk to us in our own language,
using our own words. Developing professional
creative copywriting directly in Spanish will
make a big difference for a respectful business
audience. A literal translation without the
subtleties of the language, the expressions
and a clear interpretation of the message that
the companies are trying to achieve, will drive
away potential clients and will not attract new
ones.

SPRING STAGING TIPSBY /POR SANDRA KUBO
Finally spring is here….and so is the busiest time of the Real Estate season. Would you like to obtain a better ROI when selling your home?
Follow these staging tips:
Get your yard ready by cleaning the winter debris, replacing the old winter mulch as needed and adding some nice frost-resistant plants to make it more attractive and enhance your curb appeal.
Open the windows to bring the fresh air and spring fragrant indoors. It helps to get rid of moisture, odours and infuse a natural fresh scent in your home.
Use spring colours and Décor around the house to increase the warmth in the spaces. Help brighten your home by leaving the window covers opened, allowing the natural light inside.
Spring cleaning, de-cluttering and packing the bulky winter wardrobe and comforters, will increase the feeling of space and storage capacity which is very important for growing families.

Buyers are more knowledgeable today; they are expecting a lot more than few years ago. Homeowners need to impress potential buyers right from the start, and the best way to achieve this goal is to hire a professional stager.
Many Real Estate Agents already include Staging as part of their services, as they believe it makes a huge edge over the competition. Also, they have researched and seen statistics (see below, survey by Joy Valentine – Coldwell Banker Broker) that shows it is an investment which brings higher ROI.
• Homes that were staged sold in 13.8 days versus non-staged in 30.9 days
• Staged homes realized on average a 6.4% increase over the list price

HOW DO YOU TELL PEOPLE TO BUY YOUR PRODUCT?
Oftentimes, a simple question as this yields a
lot of different answers. To start, you just have
to tell people one by one you are selling your
product, word of mouth, cold calling, knock on
your customer’s doors or announce on, tv or radio that you
are selling your product. This is verbal communication. But in
this age of multimedia and mass communication, a picture is
indeed worth a thousand words. This is visual communication.
The use of a poster, web sites, branding, creating a business
card, a magazine, flyers are few examples using a form of visual
communication called graphic design.
Recent research supports visual communication more powerful
than verbal communication, suggesting that in most cases,
people learn and retain information that is presented visually.
These complements efforts of anyone whose work involves
using visual presentations to persuade, explain or sell products,
ideas or services. Presenters now have more resources through
graphic design in creating a high impact visual medium.
Graphic design allows users to transform and present non visual
content into a visual form that is more engaging.
Look around, from candy wrappers, cereal boxes, t-shirt, signs,
news paper, web sites, mobile site and billboards, graphic
design informs, persuades, organizes, gets your attention,
stimulates, locates, identifies and provides pleasure in your daily
life. Graphic design is a creative process that combines art and
technology to communicate ideas. The designer works with a
variety of tools in order to convey a message from the client to
a target audience. The main tools are image and typography.
In the previous article, we mentioned how important logo
is. Symbols are abstract representation of a particular idea
or identity. The “Apple” from Apple for example are symbolic
forms, which we learn to recognize as representing a particular
concept or company. Logotypes are corporate identifications
based on a special typographical word treatment. Symbols
and logos are special, highly condensed information forms
or identifiers. Some identifiers are hybrid, or combinations of
symbol and logotype. These identifiers are communicated to
the graphic designer to have a clear vision of the corporation
or idea to be represented and of the audience to which the
message is directed.
Images are powerful and compelling tools of communication that not only conveys information

but also moods, emotions and personalities. Designers develop images to represent products, services
and ideas that their clients wants to communicate. In some
instances, words are used to convey a message, but how
graphic designers use words are different from how writers use
it. To designers, what the words look like is as important as their
meaning. Whether it is typography (communication designed
by means of the printed word) or handmade lettering, these
visual forms perform many communication functions. It can
make you stop and look or identify a package name on a truck.
Designers are experts at presenting information in a visual form
in print, web, packaging, signs.
Finally Designers are the link between the client and the audience.
The designer explores creative possibilities presented by words
(typography) and images (photography, fine art, illustration) to
create not only appropriate letterforms and images, but create
balance between the two to appropriately communicate a
client’s message to the audience. and establishes the best
balance between them.
Graphic designers learn how to construct a message and how to
present it successfully. They work with the client to understand the
target audience, content and the purpose of the message. And
usually collaborate with specialists or researches to understand
the nature of the audience. Once a design concept is chosen,
the designers work with illustrators and photographers as well as
with typesetters and printers or other production specialists to
create the final design product.

Spring like sunshine, arrives at last. As April days now warm the earth, winter is a memory past and once again the world is alive.
PRUNING SHRUBS AND GROWING VEGETABLESIn April as early daffodils fade, remove the flower
heads, but leave their leaves intact. Prune winter
flowering shrubs now, and spring flowering type as
soon as their flowers fade. Winter flowering shrubs require
little pruning, spring flowering shrubs, however, need
more extensive pruning. Keep herbaceous borders free from weeds,
taking care not to damage young shoots that may be developing from
established plants.
For vegetables production start indoors seedling in seed boxes, maintain
required temperature, light and humidity conditions. Sow cabbages and
parsley, peas, tomatoes, melons and cucumbers to be transplanted later on to
their growing positions, Always sow seeds thinly, congested seedlings become weak
and spindly, and encourage the presence of diseases.
PLANTING TIME
In May Lilac and Cherry bloom. It is time to remove spring flowering bedding
plants as their flowers fade. Discard plants as forget-me and wall flowers, and
carefully fork bulbs, placing them in shallow trenches in, out of the way places
in the garden.

GETTING READY FOR SUMMERPlant summer flowering bedding plants that have
be thoroughly hardened off. Water and mulch
lilies. Ensure the soil is moist and free from weeds
before forming mulch 2 to 3 inches thick. Then
remove runners from strawberry plants to direct
their energies into fruit production. Sow beet
seeds and thin summer lettuces to 9-12 inches
apart. Carefully earth-up potato shoots, but do not
cover their tips. Harvest asparagus stalks when 6
inches high and divide chives.
In June, garden scents are strong and sweet. The
rose blooms red, pink and white bright; glowing
in the evening heat. Tie up
shoots of delphiniums to
prevent them being damage. Also,
check out other border plants to
ensure they will not be damaged by
wind and rain. Removing dead leaves
and flowers helps to reduce the risk
of attack from slugs and snails. Divide
congested flag irises as soon as their
flowers fade.
Harvest radishes and scallions,
transplant Brussels sprouts into their
growing positions, and lift early
potatoes. Also sow some more lettuce
is an option. Summer is around the
corner!

emotional stress.
Our treatment goal is to improve the relationship between the structure and function of the body in order to restore balance, promote natural healing and enhance quality of life.
The mission at the clinic is to provide benefits to our patients physically, emotionally and mentally providing a pleasant atmosphere, where effective communication, compassion and respect are highly valued for each individual’s healing process.
My name is Edwin Galeano, founder and director of the clinic Hands for Health; I am a certified acupuncturist, registered massage therapist, and CranioSacral therapist. My focus is to help patients recover quickly and efficiently through the use of a unique and specific combination of modalities of treatment such as kinesiology, hydrotherapy, light therapy (infra-red and laser), electrotherapy, interferential current, TENS, ultrasound, neuro-stimulation and more. Through the years of experience as therapist, I have focused my treatment in conditions like neck and back pain, sciatic, headaches, sleeping difficulties, motor vehicle accidents and sport injuries.
A lot of the work has been done in the emotional area. CranioSacral therapy and SomatoEmotional release, stimulate rest, relaxation, repair and restoration of the body that awakens the natural healing mechanisms. Relaxation of the central nervous system is achieved by calming the rhythm caused from the movement of the cerebral spinal fluid- meaning the core of the body. These deep levels of relaxation open a window of opportunity to explore emotions, which in many cases are the source of the so called psychosomatic symptoms, achieved through inner self connection and exploration.

Ayuda a aliviar lesiones musculares y problemas
terapia Hands For Health hemos ayudado a cientos de pacientes

42 THE BEST MAGAZINE SPRING 2014
While most people associate allergies with runny noses, sinus congestion, hacking and
sneezing, very few of them realize that some sight discomfort is actually an eye allergy.
Many people who have ocular allergies experience itching as the primary symptom of discomfort. Others feel a burning sensation and “eye fatigue” that urge them to rub their eyes frequently. Some common symptoms include redness, lid swelling, tearing, light sensitivity. “grittiness” and swollen eyes.
When the immune system becomes activated due to the specific condition of the person, and overreacts to substances such as pollen or pet allergens, allergy may occur. So while many people enjoy spring and fall season, others live in dread of those times when the trees, grass and weeds begin to pollinate. People who are sensitive to these allergens experience seasonal allergic conjunctivitis.
The reason the eyes are very sensitive to these substances is that, like the skin, they are exposed surfaces unprotected that are especially vulnerable to allergens and other irritants. Therefore, the management of ocular allergies is aimed at preventing the contact with allergens, controlling the inflammation and preventing ocular surface damage secondary to the allergic response.
Visiting the Eye doctor is essential to
determine your specific eye condition and
establish the most effective treatment.
However, to minimize the symptoms, is
recommended:
• Avoid rubbing the eyes.• Use cold compresses on the eyelids or
preservative-free artificial tears drops.• Avoid wearing contact lenses while allergy is
present.• Use of filters in air conditioners and replace
them frequently.• Minimize carpeting that may retain dust mites.• Avoid sharing towels.• Use sunglasses.• Wash bed linens frequently.

TECHNOLOGY
THE IMPORTANCE OF IMPLEMENTING PREVENTATIVE MEASURES TO PROTECT YOUR INFORMATION
BY JORGE BAQUERO
More than occasionally, we might ask ourselves how we can better protect our computers but most importantly, the data contained on that hard drive. Currently very few people take cautionary methods in the use of their
computers and in the protection of its parts. Only until one or more components suffer a failure and only then do we begin to take action. In most cases it’s not always in time to save our treasured information.
There are many steps that can be taken to protect our system against failures such as in the sudden loss of electricity due to power outage which can a major cause of data loss.At this time, I would like to mention some preventative measures to be taken in order to avoid damage to computer equipment and in the prevention of data loss. Measures to be taken for protection of a computer:
1.Avoid physical damage to the equipment:
The insides of the computer is composed of many separate electronic parts which work together and each component has a limited shelf life as originally created by the manufacturer. This shelf life is also affected by and may start a faster decline due to external factors such as electricity, vibration, moisture, dust, overheating and lack of user attention and not withstanding that of human error. All of these have a play in the over all performance of the computer and therefore it is difficult to determine precisely how the combined components will stand up in use and without any failures in the final count.
2. Electrical ground: All electric sockets are composed of 2 lines; negative and positive. Through these lines is how the electric current flows. Some outlets have a third line called earth; this third line which is designed to make it through the connected components can expel excess energy supplied from a voltage rise.If the computer is not connected to an outlet with a third land line, the excess energy may not be expelled and may bring added danger to the computer components. Therefore, the first
recommendation is to have an electrical ground at the power outlet. (This work should be performed by an electrician).
3. Voltage regulator and Surge Protection:
Lets first establish the difference between a surge protector and a voltage regulator:
• Voltage Regulator: A device designed to maintain an adequate level of voltage to the connected components, the voltage regulator must maintain a margin of 100V and 115V for 110VAC inputs to 210V and 230V and 220VAC inputs.• Surge: A device designed to remove only the strong voltage spikes that may exist in an outlet. It is vital to have at least the voltage regulator, especially if you live in an area prone to power failures, with components that work to protect with an excess of energy or decreased energy regulator.
4. Keep components at proper temperature levels:
It is recommended that you keep the computer components at the lowest possible temperature, as higher temperature levels can cause component failures or even decrease the life of components and /or damage them.
5.Perform computer maintenance a minimum of every six months or at least once a year:
It doesn’t make any sense to wait till the computer starts to show signs of slowing down, lack of performance or waiting to see problems from it’s being too dirty. There are various options for cleaning components from dust, corrosion and/or overheating. It would also be highly useful to check ahead of time on various parts such as fans, cables, capacitators and parts being used. Early detection on the declining performance on any of these items could help in the prevention of serious harm to any one or more parts or even to prevent the entire system from failure.
