Thank you to the membership and the exhibitors for

giving me the priviledge of judging the Sweepstakes at the APC Nationals. Fran, Georjean and Joan, thank you for doing a great job of stewarding and for always being my support. I would also like to thank the breeders, mentors and friends who over the years have helped to shape my vision of what a correct pointer should be. Finally, a big thank you to my Dad, Dr. David Birdsall and Wayne Cavanaugh for helping me to apply what I have learned and to have the confidence to do it.

My day of judging began with the Veterans. These older friends truly have my heart. I thoroughly enjoyed the “more experienced” dogs take on the ring. My eventual winner was a lovely liver and

white dog that was certainly the “package” on the day. Standing and on the move, he exuded balance, power and strength. The best of opposite winner came from the older bitch class showing me that she still had the balance, strength and heart to get the job done. The lovely heads and expressions on both dogs topped it all off.

The afternoon brought forth the youngsters. The depth of quality in the classes was amazing. Hats off to the breeders! My eventual winner came from the 6 to 9 bitch class. This little bitch showed me wonderful balance, smoothness and confidence both standing and on the move. Her head was lovely and so was her tail. My opposite sex winner was also from the youngest class. I saw balance, smoothness and confidence in this young man as well. He is a very elegant puppy with a pretty head and proper tail.

First off I would like to thank the American Pointer Club for asking me to judge this year’s Futurity & Maturity

in the unexpected absence of the selected judge. I had a very nice entry of young dogs and bitches to choose from in both the Futurity and the Maturity. I would like to start off by saying that it was a bit hard at times to judge some of the younger exhibits during the movement examination because being the first class of the week some of the younger puppies did not have their sea legs yet. This became apparent as I watched them in later events. Of course they are just babies, but I have to judge on what I see at that moment. Ultimately my Best in Futurity went to a marvelous black & white dog (Southern Malmason Pheasantly Surprised) who had a very nice head, proper outline and lovely movement. He showed great breed type with good leg, proper underline and topline, short back and beautiful curves. Tail was set on correctly and was carried correctly. He carried his head up with pride and moved with ease. My Best of Opposite in Futurity (Southern

Irish Starr In the Game) was a pretty lemon & white bitch who moved effortlessly. She was in fabulous condition and again had a beautiful outline and curves. In many ways she was also somewhat reminiscent of Pointers from the past, and of course very correct. In general I was impressed by the fact that most of the Pointers that I saw were more compact and curvy and not the long and flat which is becoming quite a trend today. Most exhibits were well presented and in superb condition. I did see some high tails. Some other things that I noticed (to be super critical) was not enough fill in the front and/or some chests being a bit shallow. Of course these are young puppies and that may change as they age and I’m sure in some cases it is bloodline dependent, but I had to judge on the day.

The Maturity class was very deep in quality. There was a lot of nice dogs and bitches who I got the honor to observe and go over. Overall temperament, movement and breed type was very very good. My

Best in Maturity went to a stunning black & white male (Penzance Racecity the Snowy Day at Starstrk). He was a larger male that had beautiful structure and breed type. Held his head high on the go and floated around the ring with ease. He had a nice depth of chest and a good prosternum. He was relatively short in back with nice curves overall. This I think was my hardest choice and this dog seriously asked for it. Having to choose just one Maturity entry was difficult because there was so much quality in that group. So many that I would like to give honorable mentions to, but time does not allow.

Our breed has a promising future and many dedicated breeders to help that along. I look forward to seeing these young Pointer ladies and gentlemen grow up and blossom into beautiful adults.

2018 APC National Agility Chair Report

Diane Townsend

The agility entry for 2018 was small with only five dogs participating in multiple classes. These five dogs got to run agility in one of the best facilities in the country on turf with great equipment. The complete results are available on

the show secretary’s website, Caper Dogs.

A huge thank you to our judge, Karen Winter, who designed some very nice courses for the Pointers. Karen helped with set-up just as much as everyone else. She brought a young boy with her to help with set-up and he was a HUGE help.

We also want to thank all those members that helped with set-up, ring crew, scribe, timer, leash runner, etc. We had a few spectators and we always appreciate their support. It makes it more fun. Congrats to those that qualified!

Karen Winter

Iwould like to thank the American Pointers for inviting me to judge the Agility portion of their National. The exhibitors were great and the dogs all had a good time. Not a lot of qualifiers but they all ran nicely and had fun running. I

enjoyed my day watching the pointers run in agility. The dogs and handlers all did well and I look forward to seeing them compete in trials across the country when I am in their hometown judging.

2018 APC National Obedience Chair Report

Liz McLeod

Once again this year, our obedience and rally entries consisted of a small, but mighty group. We had 3 dogs competing in Obedience for a total of 4 entries and 5 dogs entered in the Rally classes. We had 1 qualifier in

Obedience and 3 qualifiers in Rally. This year’s Obedience High in Trial was earned by GCH Pawsup Accustomed to Success BN RA JH NAP NJP TKN from the Novice B class.

A huge thank you to our judge, Virginia Kinion, who was very nice to work with and was positive and supportive of all the teams competing. Thank you as well to everyone who entered this trial and to everyone who volunteered and helped out where it was needed. A big thank you to Jackie Paul for her generous donation of tasty dog treats for all competitors

2018 APC National Specialty Obedience Critique

Ginger Kinion

Thank you so much for inviting me to judge obedience at your 2018 National at Purina Farms. The show was very successful and all the exhibitors were well prepared to show at their best. I especially liked the heeling and

teamwork.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank my efficient stewards and all the club members for their hard work and hospitality. Congratulations to all who had the opportunity to enjoy a wonderful day with their dogs at the National.
