DALE BUTLER/the CourierMiguel Duran, owner and grandmaster, and son Mike Duran, head instructor, are honored that Ceres Courier readers selected their studio as the best in martial arts.

By DALE BUTLERStaff reporter of the

C e r e s ( C a l i f . ) C o u r i e r

For the eighth time in 10 years, Ceres Courier readers voted Ceres Karate as the best in martial arts instruction.

“It’s fantastic,” said Miguel Duran, 60, owner and grandmaster. “The com-munity has embraced us. A few years ago when the economy went bad, it was a difficult time.”

“It’s a big honor,” said Mike Duran, 31, head instructor and Miguel’s son. “It’s community-based voting. It just

shows you hard work pays off. We take a lot of pride in running our business the right way. We don’t do contracts. Every-thing is month to month. People choose to be here.”

About 250 students, aged 4-72, receive instruction from Ceres Karate.

Classes are offered mornings and eve-nings inside an 8,500 square-foot facility located at 2005 Central Avenue.

“We have four different training floors,” Mike said. “We’re able to run multiple classes at the same time. We instill discipline and good life skills in

NAME OF BUSINESS: Don’s RV Center.

LOCATION: 4872 Rhode Road, Ceres.

PHONE: (209) 556-9993 or (877) 236-6778.

ABOUT THE BUSINESS: Don Clark began his career in the recreational vehicle industry as a young man out of high school. While attending a local junior college, Don worked at a manufacturing plant, building RVs in his home town of Los Banos, where he gained his RV structural knowl-edge. He later moved to Modesto and worked at several RV centers. While working, he also became certified in electrical, refrigeration and all aspects of an RV. In 1989 Don opened a RV service shop and small store. The store has grown to one of the largest in the Val-

ley. In 2001, Don decided to try his hand at sales. After many months of researching and visiting manufactur-ing plants, he decided to go with GLENDALE RECREATIONAL VEHICLES in Strathroy, Ontario, Canada, which were quality built trailers. Don has since continued his pursuit in carrying only high quality trailers at the best available prices as well as having the best customer service.

After moving to his current six-acre facility, he introduced the Keystone RV lines (North America’s #1 manu-facturer of RVs): Montana (#1 selling fifth wheel), Springdale and also the Raptor Toy hauler lines. Clark feels his fifth wheel and travel trailer inven-tory is second to no one and is very involved with all day to day opera-tions.

AMERICAN PET CLINIC is rela-tively new to Ceres and drawing positive feedback on its care of small animals. While 95 percent of the animals brought to the clinic in the Richland Shopping Center, 2531 E. Whitmore Ave., Suite A, are dogs and cats, pet owners have also sought out medical care for their snakes, pot belly pigs and even hamsters.

“We are getting lots of positive feedback from our customers,” said Dr. Amanpreet S. Basra, DVM. So much so that Ceres Courier readers voted American Pet Clinic as the best in veterinary care for 2012 and 2013.

The clinic opened its doors in 2011 but the current ownership began in December, 2012.

American Pet Clinic’s philosophy is summed up in its mission statement: “We know pets are an important part of your family. Their love and friendship is uncon-ditional. They are part of the family. And you will do whatever it takes to keep them healthy for years to come. At American Pet Clinic, we understand that everlasting bond. That is why we are so passionate about pet care. We are a full-service, family- owned and operated veterinary clinic, focused on providing the personalized veterinary care and customer service necessary to help your pets live long, happy and healthy lives.”

The business offers preventative mea-sures like dental care, vaccinations, annual checkups, and microchipping as well as care for ill, injured, or aging pets including x-rays, surgery, pain management, and hos-pice options.

American Pet Clinic also offers artificial insemination and pregnancy packages, including C-sections, progesterone tests, and X-rays.

House calls are also a service for those whose circumstances do not allow a pet owner to come in provided that the location is within a 15-mile radius of the clinic.

The company’s website claims it offers prices that “are very competitive without sacrificing quality. We know that keeping prices low is another way we can help save as many lives as possible. In every situa-tion, we’re committed to treating you and your pets with respect, compassion, and appreciation.”

The business is open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. American Pet Clinic may be reached at 537-2100 or emailed at [email protected].

American Pet Clinic: #1 veterinarian office

TARA LEVY/the CourierVeterinarian Amanpreet S. Basra, DVM, and wife Mindy posed with the staff of American Pet Clinic (with the children included). Dr. Basra has been in the veterinary field for more than 15 years, working in every aspect of the business from kennel help to top management. In 2003, Dr. Basra entered veterinary school. Best Child Care: KIDZ MINISTRY

• 2545 Third Street & 2445 Whitmore Ave., Ceres • 538-3912 • www.kidz-care.com

KIDZ MINISTRY INFANT CARE CENTER in Ceres, doesn’t exactly fit the norm. For starters, the Christian based cen-ter, operated by the Kidz Ministry Founda-tion, offers services to families for the care of six weeks to two year olds.

Filling a niche with good service is the reason the center was voted the favorite childcare provider in Ceres by readers of the Ceres Courier.

Also setting the business apart is they offer Saturday service.

They also accept what government pays social services recipients without making parents cough up the difference.

“We can structure our fees to help parents,” said Director/owner Brenda Cabrera. “A lot of the schools will accept the government aid and then the difference between the aid and what their rates are they will charge. We don’t do that.”

Cabrera said the center is fully staffed with credentialed employees.

“I have a full staff,” said Cabrera, who

has been a director in the Bay Area for about five years.

Cabrera said services can range from part-time mornings to full-time five or six days a week.

“We are very flexible,” she said.Hourly drop-offs and rates are available. In a year’s time, Brenda Cabrerro has

seen her daycare facility at 2545 Third Street go from one child to more than she was able to handle at the site. Thus, Kidz Ministry Foundation has expanded to a second site, this one at a commercial center at 2445 Whitmore Avenue will double as a daycare for infants and a preschool.

“We were full,” said Cabrerro of her Third Street center. “We were maxed out.”

The new 3,600-square-foot center on Whitmore Avenue is taking applications for up to 21 infants and 30 pre-schoolers. Kidz’s second location is to meet the grow-ing need for affordable infant care along with expanding into a preschool to meet the needs of the children who are currently attending Kidz and who would have been turned out once they reached the age of two.

Kidz Ministry Foun-dation has opened a new infant care center at 2545 Third Street north of the Ceres Library in downtown. Pictured outside the building is owner and founder Brenda Cabrera.

Pastor Condit: favorite role modelBy JEFF BENZIGER

Editor of the

C e r e s ( C a l i f . ) C o u r i e r

Readers of the Ceres Courier have voted Adrian Condit as their favorite community role model.

Adrian Condit has been a witness to

enough pain and suffering and tri-als in life that his

sermons at age 86 are softer than they

were as a young fiery Oklahoma preacher starting out in 1951.

The pastor of Vil-lage Chapel Free-Will

Baptist Church in Ceres admits that even family

members can see how he has “mellowed

out.”“They think

I’m not as stern with my preach-ing and correction and that I preach with more com-passion

and grace than I used to,” said Condit. “I grew up with preachers that were more on the judgmental side. They’d rather judge you rather than bring you out from under condemnation.”

Admittedly, it was the front-row seat to human frailty inside Memorial Medical Center – where he served as senior chaplain to the ill and dying for 21 years – that helped round off the sharper edges and made him the kinder and gentler disciple that he is today. There were many times, after visiting with and praying with a person in their dying days, that he had to seek the refuge of his office down the hall and let the tears flow. It was there that he would ask God for inner strength to be able to do the work.

“I learned to accept people more where they’re at than I ever have before in my life. It’s not your church. It’s not your religion. It’s not what church you belong to but it’s about what you have in your heart. It’s about Jesus. And if it’s not about Him, it’s not going to be about much.”

The softening may also have much to do with the personal heart-aches as a father watching his children go

through crisis: One battling drug addiction. Another who endured a scandal of tabloid proportions and the end of political career. Another who suffered a debilitating vehi-

cle crash. The elder Con-dit, whose white hair has curled following hormone shots used to treat prostate cancer, said his faith in Jesus Christ has seen him through.

“We went through a lot of trial and hurt. You go through stuff. It’s hard. You might get a little bogged down but there’s a way out and I know the Lord is the way. Jesus said, ‘I am the way’ and He’s the way out of our places of hurt and pain.”

It’s hard to imagine Adrian Condit, who gen-erously weaves scripture into routine conversation with a kindly, thick south-ern drawl, doing anything other than preaching. But there was a time in which Condit never dreamed of being a pastor. Born Dec. 25, 1927 to Bill and Pigeon Condit, Adrian had only been exposed to farming before serving two years

in the Navy on the heels of World War

Pastor Adrian Condit is a beloved figure in Ceres. He is pastor of Vil-lage Chapel Free-Will Baptist

Ceres has voted for their favorite busi-nesses. We call the results the "Best of Ceres." But many may be unaware that shopping in Ceres makes it the "best," so the city can do its "best" job.

For every dollar spent on taxable goods in Ceres, shoppers pay a tax at the rate of 8.125 cents, one of the highest in Stanislaus County. That tax money is then divided upon among various gov-

ernmental entities. This is the breakdown of where those 8.125 cents go:

• One penny goes to the city of Ceres and Stanislaus County.

• A half-cent goes to bolstering Ceres police and fire departments.

• Six cents goes to the state’s general fund;

• A quarter of a cent goes to county-wide transportation needs.

• A half-cent makes its way to the county’s mental health obligations.

• An eighth-cent goes to the county

K3 DENTAL is relatively new to Ceres but its sterling reputation has gained the vote of Ceres Courier readers as the best dentistry practice in town.

Gurminder Uppal, DDS, bought out the dental prac-tice of Kay Kucera last year and renamed it K3 Dental since three mem-bers of the family – hus-band and business manager Konark Uppal and children Kuber and Kiara – have names starting with K. In moving to Ceres, she closed down her practice in Dublin which had operated three years and has not regretted the move.

“It’s been great,” said Uppal. “I really like the

patients and everything about the Central Valley compared to the Bay area. I think it’s a better place. I think most of my patients here are very laid back and they value the treatment they’re receiving and it’s more of a very valid com-munity type feeling. It’s very close and everyone knows everyone. I have patients who have been coming to this dental prac-tice for the last 30 years. In the Bay Area they want things quick, they want it today - actually wanted it yesterday.”

She said she loves her dental team.

“I think they’re very good. They’ve stayed here for a very long time and that says something about the practice and how com-

THIS YEAR READERS OF THE Ceres Courier were asked to weigh in on a subject never before offered in its Best of Ceres contest. When asked the name of their favorite politician, readers answered with the newest member of the Ceres City Council, Lynda Ryno.

While meant to be a compliment, the news grated on Ryno.

“I have always said I do not want to be known as a politician,” said Ryno. “There is a difference between a public servant – which is what I am – and a politician.”

Since taking office in December 2013, Ryno has gained a reputation as being somewhat direct with staff, supportive of rank and file police and firefighters, and an advocated of cleaning up Ceres – so much so that she has participated in a number of clean-ups of Highway 99.

Ryno unfairly became a foe of the Stanislaus County chapter National Asso-

ciation for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) who hinted that racism was behind her push to end city sponsor-ship for their community nursing program when it was all about fears for city liability in malpractice suits. Most observers – including Ceres Chamber of Commerce president Renee Ledbetter – dismissed the words of Frank Johnson, the local NAACP president, as being inflammatory, far-flung and unfounded.

Her boldness has earned her fans and detractors. Don Cool, a regular attender of council meetings, said one must be pres-ent “at the meetings to see the faces and the expressions people have when stuff is brought (by Ryno).

“I look at Linda Ryno as the vertebrae and backbone that we’ve needed in that council for a long time. It’s kind of knock-ing the rest of them and I don’t mean to knock the rest of them but she brings up things that aren’t real popular to bring up but the things that she does bring up, she has the citizens in thought and to do

Once again, Foster Freeze at 2373 Whitmore Ave., Ceres, continues to rack up the honors for one of Ceres' favorite places to escape the home kitchen. Ceres' longest running burger establishment has captured more Best of Ceres honors, this year in the categories of Best Burgers, Best Ice Cream and Best Fast Food. Owners Darshana and Harry Jamnadas say they are honored to have such a devoted customer base. Besides great tasting food, the restaurant features a drive-thru lane. Foster Freeze has changed since it was established on Whitmore Avenue in the 1960s. The addition of a drive-through lane and a remodeled and expanded dining room as well as remodeled facade did wonders to boost sales. However, one thing that has never changed is the popularity of the foods offered there, including burgers and ice cream products.

people to me.”Fernando opened Knockout

Customs at 2128 Pine Street in November 2013.

“I do the body work and painting,” he said. “I have contractors for airbrushing and pinstriping.”

Ceres’ Roland Nordstedt called eight other shops prior to finding Knockout Cus-toms.

“I got a couple of bids from people before going to him,” said Nordstedt, 72. “I walked in off the street. He was up front with me. He wasn’t BS-ing me. I was lucky to find him.”

Contreras worked on Roland’s 1974 Chevrolet half-ton pickup for over three months.

“I wasn’t in a rush,” Nor-dstedt said. “I didn’t push him. I’ve wanted to do this for years. My wife was sick so I put it off. He stripped everything completely down.

He painted the inside and outside. He put in new rugs and door panels, and a dash pad.”

Knockout Customs also painted a mural of Roland’s wife Brenda – who passed away on July 31, 2013 – and their three dogs on the hood of his pickup.

“I couldn’t believe it when I saw it,” Nordstedt said. “It was perfect.”

“As long as he’s in busi-ness, I’ll go back to him,” Nordstedt said. “He’s always busy. He just does excellent work. He can do everything. He takes care of his custom-ers. Plus, he’s a nice guy.”

Approximately 10 mem-bers of the Stockton chapter of Swift Car Club have done business with Contreras, including the owner of a 2003 GMC Yukon Denali. A “Scarface” mural was air-brushed on the passenger side of the vehicle.

Knockout Customs is open Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and may be reached at 985-2105.

Prime Shine Car Wash, located at 1740 Hatch Road and now behind the Cruisers at Mitchell Road and Whitmore Avenue, was voted as the best car wash facility in Ceres. Since opening Prime Shine Car Wash in 1991, owners Norm and Evan Porges have been the driving force behind the company that’s washed millions of vehicles throughout the Central Valley. With a top-to-bottom clean that is value-priced, and finished in just three minutes, Prime Shine filled the niche between time consuming and pricey full-service washes, and the do-it-yourself option. Use of the vacuum cleaners is still free.

While it’s true that more and more sales tax money is being siphoned off to the state, local sales tax revenue still is an important chunk of change for City Hall.

Citizens of Ceres approved Measure H in 2007 to raise sales tax by a half-cent to fund police and fire services. But about 75 percent of the general fund goes to public safety.

Director of Public Safety Art deWerk said the tax sup-ports five police officers and five firefighters hired under Measure H since its passage in November 2007. An addi-tional police officer will be added soon, for a total of 10 new hires attributed to Mea-sure H.

Measure H passed by a margin of 75.13 percent to 24.87 percent. The measure raised the sales tax rate in Ceres from 7.375 percent to

7.875 percent and is expected to raise $2 million to $2.5 million annually solely to augment public safety.

The measure allowed for the formation of a new Street Crimes Unit, which has already been making a dent in drug trafficking and gangs.

Mayor Chris Vierra said that prior to the passage of Measure H, Ceres had an insufficient number of police officers patrolling the streets and that fire service was limited to just 24 firefighters with only eight on duty at any one time to protect the community of 42,000 resi-dents.

The fire service with its five new positions is now able to respond more effec-tively to fires, traffic colli-sions and medical emergen-cies with its increased staff-ing, said Mayor Vierra. The Measure has allowed Ceres to retain its public safety staff while other cities in the Val-ley have laid off employees.

Ceres receives approxi-mately $4 million from sales tax allocations annually.

II. Becoming a pastor was the last thing he thought of becoming while driving ambulances for the fleet hospital #114 in the Samu-rai islands near the Philip-pines. But the Navy experi-ence taught him the disci-pline of following orders that one does not want to do. That discipline laid the groundwork for answering another set of orders he didn’t want to obey.

Older brother E.B. Condit was a pastor at the Little Rock Baptist Church outside of Locust Grove, Okla., which was Adrian’s excuse to fight his own personal calling to go into the ministry.

“I was stubborn,” he said with a rich laugh. “I wasn’t going to preach. I said, ‘Lord, one preacher in this family is enough. Let me do something else. I’ll be a deacon. I’ll lead the singing. I’ll teach a Sunday School class. I’ll do what-ever. Just don’t ask me to preach.’ He won. One way or the other God’s going to win.”

He preached his first sermon in 1951 in his brother’s church.

Village Chapel, a small church across from Caswell Elementary School, is the reason the Condits made Ceres home. The church called Adrian Condit to

pastor in August 1967 from Tulsa, Oklahoma and he stayed 16 years until he made a change.

Coming with them were sons Burl (born in 1946), Gary (1948), Darrell Wayne “Hoppy” (1952) and daughter Dovie (1955). Gary was married and attending college at Stan-islaus State in 1972 when he decided to enter Ceres city politics. Adrian tried talking Gary out of the idea, noting how dirty poli-tics can be. Gary reminded his preacher father that “a lot of politicking that goes on in church too.”

In 1983 Memorial Medical Center CEO Paul Thomas called on Condit to become hospital chaplain. He had served as chaplain at the Ceres hospital and they liked his work.

“I was there 21 years and it was a great ministry. I enjoyed the chaplaincy and I still miss it to a degree because I’m a people per-son and I like the routine of visiting people every day and praying with them and sharing with them.”

It’s that same desire to serve others that will be the impetus for Adrian’s great-grandchildren to enter poli-tics if they do, he said.

“Whatever this younger Condit generation decides to do, they’ll do it with all of their heart and they’ll do a great job at it.”

The Condits started worshiping at Village Cha-

pel again where Marcus Minkler had been pastor. Adrian had vowed, after retirement, to keep busy in a pastoral role preaching at funerals or filling pulpits “now and then.”

“I wasn’t going to quit preaching as long as there’s a place for me to preach, as long as I can,” said Condit.

“I had no idea that I’d be back pastoring the church.”

When Minkler left the church in 2008, Adrian Condit was called to be pastor. He brought back more of the old hymns that many of the older members liked and numbers steadily increased.

Condit sees himself continuing to pastor at the church “until the Lord gets through with me.”

“I’m just here because of Him. I’ve always loved what I’m doing for all these years. I’ve been preaching now for over 61 years.”

For now Pastor Con-dit sees nothing wrong with sticking around into his 90s. Longevity runs in the Condit bloodline. His mother died at age 91, his dad was 89, and three brothers reached the respective ages of 86, 89 and 92. But he believes something else keeps him going.

“What keeps me going is the hope that I have in eternal life and the hope that I have in the coming of the Lord Jesus and the burden of my heart to see people saved. This old world is headed for a time of trouble like it’s never been in before. People are missing the mark because they’re just sort of drifting alone with an attitude like it’s going to be like this forever.”

His nearly 70-year mar-riage to former high school sweetheart Jean Condit also keeps him going. “She’s been a great inspiration.”

The Condit family patri-arch said he’s also “trying to put as much in the love of God” in the “hearts and little minds” of his 12 great-grandchildren.

what’s best for the city of Ceres. Like the NAACP; that was a really unpopular thing to bring up and she got crucified for it but it was the right thing to do because she had the city of Ceres in her best interest.”

Cool said it’s evident that Ryno comes to meet-ings prepared and does her homework. She also knows the inner workings of City Hall. Before she was elected, Ryno, a Ceres resident since 1983, worked for the city as the admin-istrative secretary for the Planning Department for over 29 years. Her first time at the City Council in 2011 ended in defeat but she was elected as a retiree two years later.

“Ceres is a wonderful family oriented community and I want to make it even better now that I have the opportunity and time that retirement offers,” she said. “I have a vested interest in this community by remaining a citi-zen of Ceres and living my retirement in

Ceres with my friends and family.”She happily voted for tougher city

enforcement of the A-frame sign ban, voted to restore salary concessions of city employees and held the feet of for-mer Police Chief Art deWerk to the fire over trimming police department over-time costs. He resigned shortly thereafter.

Ryno, 60, has said she values transpar-ency in government, assuring safety for

all citizens and insure that the council and city staff are held accountable to citizen’s requests for assistance with respect. Her years of serv-ing at City Hall have armed her with knowledge about how a city runs. She said she has never –nor never will – compromised her integrity.

A Manteca High School graduate, Ryno is married to former police Sgt. Sam Ryno. They have two sons, Lucas, and Zachary. Their son and daughter in law

Aimee gave them their first grandchild, Logan.

She lists as her proudest accomplish-ment as raising two sons into “respon-sible, productive citizens with strong work ethics.”

COUNTRYSIDE PROPERTY MAN-AGEMENT at its Orchard Park Center office has been named by Ceres Courier readers as the Best Property Management firm in Ceres.

Jason Alves, president and broker of Coun-tryside, said the business was set up in Ceres about four years ago. The company manages all types of property, including commer-cial, but mostly multiple family complexes, smaller duplexes and single-family residen-tial rentals for long-distance owners. In fact, Alves said 95 percent of the company’s cli-entele is in residential property management. The company’s services include online docu-ment signing, through tenant screening, hiring of handymen for repairs, collecting rent and

providing reports of income and expenses, and general property maintenance and upkeep.

The company’s website, countrysidepm.com also allows anyone to search for prop-erties to lease. Most vacant and available rentals may be viewed by checking out a key from the office. When a key is not available for viewing, showings will be by

appointment. Checking out a key requires that a prospective tenant to present a valid photo ID and a $50 refundable cash key deposit.

About a year ago, classmate Robert Moore joined the firm as a senior property manager.
