We are pleased to present the awards to the winning local businesses listed throughout this publication. Congratulations!

Best of Large Business: Edaleen Dairy LYNDEN — Ever since opening the doors to the family-run dairy along Guide Meridian Road north of Lynden to sell milk in 1975, Edaleen Dairy, owned by Ed and Aileen Brandsma, has been a staple of the community’s dairy industry. Featuring ice cream from near the start, Edaleen also continued to grow its sales operation, serving customers from local schools to supermarkets. And there’s been recent retail expansion. With its main farm store bursting with Canadian traffic, Edaleen opened a store in Sumas in June 2011 and then just 18 months later grabbed local traffic on the eastside of Lynden by opening in the former Eastside Market location in late November. “We’ve wanted to come into Lynden a long time,” said general manager Mitch Moorlag at the time of the opening. “To win "Reader's Choice" means a lot to us,” he said. “We are so proud to be part of a great community and love everyone’s support.” The locally made hard- and soft-serve ice cream that ships throughout the Pacific Northwest is the same as what’s served at the three Edaleen dairy stores in the county.

Best of New Business: Guide Insurance Services LYNDEN — Guide Insurance Services is just one year old and recently moved into a newer, larger space in the Lynden Towne Plaza. But Joel Kok sees the changes as part of his 32 years in the insurance field over-all. As son Brett becomes a partner, this is now a third-generation business in town. Joel credits his eight employees with doing a “marvelous job” through all the

transitions of starting a new office. He said the independent agency, of-fering auto, home and business coverage, is well on its way toward reaching three-year goals within a much shorter time. The objective is simple: “The whole thing is we’re going to keep it local and we’re going to do what’s best for the cus-tomer,” Joel said. Guide Insurance intends to do peri-odic reviews of coverage with customers in order to give them the best service pos-sible, he said. Guide deals with about 12 main com-panies and up to 150 to obtain all the di-verse types of coverage customers need.

Best of Small Business: Dave’s Sports Shop LYNDEN — While it hasn’t always carried its current name, Dave’s Sports Shop has a storied history in Lynden, and it is deeply rooted in family tradition. Existing in some form or another since 1957, the Jude and Gert VanderHoek family’s store has long served Lynden’s sporting goods and houseware needs. Dave VanderHoek and Dean Hendricks joined in partnership with Jude and Gert in 1976, and the store became part of Coast to Coast Hardware and later, Ace Hardware. Eventually, it became clear that the business needed more space. The shop finished relocating into its current space in the Fair-way Center in April 2007 following a remodel of the former Fairway Drug building. Now called Dave’s Sports Shop, the store carries a full line of hunting, fishing and camping products including firearms, fly fish-ing rods, sleeping bags, archery equipment and much, much more. Dave’s also has a full line of giftware, apparel, archery gear, fishing and hunting gear, hunting and target rifles, handguns, ammunition, camping gear and athletic supplies.
