Introduction
Sandwiches are the masters of the food kingdom. This versatile food is an
important staple in the typical college student’s diet. The sandwich is one of the
few food items efficient enough to cover the entire food pyramid, your essential
vitamins, nutrients, and protein, yet still remain completely edible.
This feasibility study will aid you in your journey to find the best sandwich shop.
We can provide you the knowledge of your best sandwich experience just a few
steps away from University of North Texas’s campus.
The four sandwich shops we are judging are Jimmy John’s, Potbelly, Subway, and
New York Sub-Hub. The results we have collected are based on the taste, cost,
location, and atmosphere of each of the sandwich shops.

Criteria and Methods
Method
Each group member was assigned to one of the four sandwich shops. All
members ordered a typical meal consisting of a regular 6-inch sandwich of their
choice, a bag of chips or cookie, and a medium drink.
In addition, the members were given four survey sheets each with the criteria
Taste and Atmosphere paired with a numerical grading scale of 1-10 (10 being the
best) and an optional comments box. The members chose four regular customers
of each respective sandwich shop to fill out the survey and averaged the scores of
each criterion.
Criteria Judged
Grading Icon – Max Total Score: 18 sandwiches
Taste – evaluates the quality of the food and the satisfaction level of the
customer’s taste buds. The amount of sandwiches earned is determined by
the mean of the four survey ratings for this criterion, with each sandwich
representing 2 points.
(Max Score: 5 sandwiches)
Cost – evaluates how fair the price of the meal is in comparison with the
quantity of food eaten. The amount of sandwiches earned is determined by
the price of the meal. Four sandwiches represent the cheapest shop and one
sandwich is the most expensive.
(Max Score: 4 sandwiches)
Atmosphere – evaluates the style and aesthetic of the shop setting,
including how lively and clean the shop is. The amount of sandwiches
earned is determined by the mean of the four survey ratings for this
criterion, with each sandwich representing 2 points.
(Max Score: 5 sandwiches)
Location – evaluates the distance needed to travel on foot to get to the
shop. The amount of sandwiches earned is determined by the calculated
distance of the shop from the Union at the center of campus. Four
sandwiches represent the closest shop and one sandwich is the farthest.

Jimmy John’s is by far most talked about sandwich delivery shop in Denton. It is located on
Fry Street, a favorite street of many at UNT, and is an overwhelmingly popular choice for the
hungry student late at night due to their speedy delivery and low prices. The quality of the
sandwiches is good, but not the best around town.
Jimmy John’s is so close to campus it might as well be an official part of UNT. The inside of
the shop is very clean and has a retro style reminiscent of the 80s. The staff is courteous,
well- mannered, and enjoys telling jokes about “50 Shades of Grey” on a regular basis.

Potbelly Sandwich Works is the newest addition to the campus sandwich shop family in
Denton. It is also located on the popular Fry Street, next to Chipotle and Sterling Fry
Apartments. Potbelly is always crowded during lunchtime with a hungry horde of students.
Their sandwiches are a hot, gooey torpedo of flavor, and a fast favorite of many. The shop’s
prices are reasonable but run higher than their competition.
Potbelly has a warm, cozy feeling vibe inside the shop that makes you think of Grandma’s
kitchen, although it is on the small side. It also has a nice outdoor dining area overlooking Fry
Street. The staff is very friendly and relaxed, as is the atmosphere.

Subway is the most well known sandwich franchise in America for many reasons. The prices
and value of the food is hard to beat and it is one of the rare fast food chains where it is easy
to eat healthy. It is located across from the two most populated dorms (Maple and Kerr Hall)
making it one of the most convenient eats for hungry students. Subway has a wide range of
sandwich toppings and always has great deals to save your money.
Subway is clean and fresh looking as always on the inside, but a bit boring if you have been
in too many of them. The friendly staff is very social and quick to crack a joke.

New York Sub-Hub may not be as talked about as the other sandwich shops near campus, but
it is a top-notch establishment. This family-owned restaurant has been running in Denton, its
original site, since 1979. It is located on Avenue C across from Maple and Clarke Hall. It is a
bit further away from campus than its competition. Its 30 different New York-style sub
sandwiches and extremely reasonable prices have made this place a local favorite.
The inside is well decorated with the essence of the Big Apple, leaving no empty space on its
walls. Its unique atmosphere sets it apart from other restaurants. The service is quick,
friendly, and won’t mind helping you customize your sandwich to exactly what you want.

Conclusion & Recommendation
15
Conclusion
The scores of each of the sandwich shops came out very close due to the wide
range of opinions and individuals surveyed. None of the sandwich shops won all
of the criteria judged, which helped in keeping the scores well-balanced.
Based on our results:
New York Sub-Hub and Potbelly came out on top in the “Taste” category
with a maximum rating of 5 sandwiches, closely followed by Subway with
4.5 sandwiches, and Jimmy John’s with 3.5 sandwiches.
The “Cost” criterion was close, but New York Sub-Hub won again with a
maximum rating of 4 sandwiches due to having the lowest-priced meal
($7.10). Subway ($7.35) and Jimmy John’s ($7.84) trailed behind with a
few cents difference. Potbelly ($8.12) was the most expensive shop and
received only 1 sandwich.
In the “Atmosphere” category, New York Sub-Hub is victorious again with
its un-Texan city vibe, followed by the tied 4.5 ratings of Subway’s fresh
and Potbelly’s cozy atmosphere. Jimmy John’s retro style ends the list with
a rating of 4 sandwiches.
Jimmy John’s crushes its competition in the “Location” category by being
only .2 miles away from the Union. Potbelly and Subway were both .3
miles away, but Potbelly’s location on Fry Street trumps Subway’s setting.
New York Sub-Hub finishes last due to its .6-mile distance.
