About Report

This Report provides information on our economic, environmental and

social performance for 2020-21. This is our First Sustainability Report

which covers our Sustainability Progress Highlights, CDP climate and water

submissions, and other documents to assist interested stakeholders.

This Sustainability report is produced primarily in accordance with the GRI

Standards framework at the “Core” level.

We have covered GRI Standards which is relevant to the kind of business

we are dealing with and it is reflected in Contents Index at the Initial Pages.

External assurance was not obtained for this report. However, BVCPL does

verified all the Environment , Energy, Health and greenhouse gas emission

information.

In addition, BVCPL has policies and internal practices to enhance and

provide assurance about the accuracy of the report. For instance, internal

and second-party audits are conducted on many of BVCPL key activities

including safety, health, and environmental performance, financial

accounting and compliance with the BVCPL Code of Conduct.

404 _ BVCPL SUSTAINABILITY REPORT 2020-21

Sustainability is no longer just an environmental obligation for corporations. Today, it is a business imperative and needs to be hard-wired into corporate strategy. Profitability intertwined with sustainability, in the long run, positively benefits the people and the planet by enhancing livelihood opportunities to the communities as well as by safeguarding the environment.

In this Context, I am pleased to share BVCPL’s Sustainability Report, The endeavor is to deploy the best available technologies and benchmark them against global best practices to enhance long-term value creation. Across businesses, BVCPL has taken proactive steps in developing a framework for sustainability, based on the expectations of external and internal stakeholders as well as at some extent, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).

Getting more from less is the driving force behind many of our sustainable innovations. We deploy emergent technologies to minimize our carbon footprint and waste generation, along with installing variable frequency drive to reduce energy consumption, retrofitting, redesigning processes and installing energy-efficient equipment. We continue to improve water-use efficiency in our operations, while affecting cultural change in conserving and reusing water.

People play a crucial role in sustaining our competitive edge and achieving long-term success. We aim to attract and develop a workforce that is as diverse as our customers and communities. What sets us apart, though, is our culture of safety– encapsulated in our common goal of ensuring nobody gets hurt at work. We have collaborated with ERM to strengthen the Safety Management System in our businesses. OHSAS 18001/ISO 45001 is the foundation of our occupational health and safety programmes at our sites and has resulted in continued improvements in our safety performance.

We remain committed as ever to delivering enhanced value for our stakeholders. We encourage you to go through our Sustainability Report and share your valuable feedback. Together, we can take our sustainability journey to new heights.

Development Goal

The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide a powerful

framework for bringing focus and resources to the greatest challenges

facing the world today on issues such as economic empowerment,

human rights, health, and the natural environment. BVCPL is actively

engaging with many different stakeholders on the SDGs where it can

provide strategic insight and collaboration.

Although we value all SDGs, we focus on those that are most

relevant to our business and fundamentals. As a business-to-business

company, we are part of vast production cycles and strive to help our

customers achieve their goals and satisfy consumers’ demand for

more sustainable products. In principle, we support all 17 SDGs, yet

have still identified the areas especially relevant to us. We can make a

considerable contribution to value in these areas.

The figure at right highlights how the BVCPL Sustainability Goals —

comprised of Innovation, Security, and carbon footprint — align with

and support attainment of the SDGs.

We at BVCPL are making hard efforts to contribute to those 12

Sustainable Goals at our personal as well as professional life which

impact directly / indirectly on the environment, Health and Safety of

the surrounding and communities.

Harassment of Women at the Workplace Act, 2013”. All our employees

go through compulsory training on prevention of sexual harassment. We

have a dedicated Complaints Committee to monitor and address

grievances of sexual nature.

Our whistle-blower policy provides a transparent, two-way platform for employees to communicate their concerns or grievances regarding unacceptable, improper or unethical

practices within BVCPL. Through this policy, employees are given the freedom to communicate their concerns without informing their immediate supervisors. Our Whistleblowing

Responsible Sourcing and Supplier AssessmentAt BVCPL we have championed Social and Environmental

responsibility by developing strategies and policies aligning

with the Company’s sustainable vision. Including this in our

supply chain agenda, we have formulated procurement

guidelines that require us to audit new suppliers based on

Environment, health , safety , Ethics parameters before

bringing them on board. We have developed one of the

important policies to vouch for sustainable procurement -

“Sustainable Procurement Policy” .These policies highlight

our expectations on critical sustainability performance

parameters such as health and safety, human rights,

integrity, and environmental sustainability to name a few.

The policies have been created in accordance with

international benchmarks and best practices

Sustainable Procurement Policy:

To align with our sustainability commitment, we have

developed a Sustainable Procurement Policy ,which is an

extension of our values; applicable to all our suppliers.

We expect our suppliers to operate in accordance with

the principles as outlined in this Policy , while adhering

to all applicable laws and regulations.

In the policy, we go beyond legal compliance

requirements by drawing upon internationally recognised

standards in order to identify and define best practices

from across the globe. The policy outlines our

expectations with regards to ethics, business integrity,

human rights, health & safety, environment, the local

community, quality of product & operations, human

rights aspects like collective bargaining, child labour,

forced labour and other parameters. We periodically

review our procurement policy for improvement and to

ensure that it continues to help us move towards our

vision.

Supplier Assessment Methodology:

We have been striving hard to bring about robust policies

in place to assess our suppliers based on sustainability

criteria. In line with the key policies, we have designed

an extensive questionnaire with all our suppliers to help

us assess their sustainability. The questionnaire evaluates

the supplier based on four different parameters such as

Degree of compliance to ethics and legal requirements,

Supplier’s management maturity, Supplier’s level of

Environment, Health and Safety Performance.

Key Results of the Supplier Survey:

According to Our established Procedure , Online

Assessment in terms of Environment, Health, Safety,

Ethics , Labour Law, Human Rights aspects carried out

Once in every 03 Years. In 2019-20 We have Performed

Assessment of all the supplier.. Further to that, In FY20,

we have carried out Virtual Audit of 02 supplier to check

their compliance level. We are working closely with our

suppliers to better their performance.

Responsible Sourcing

Our raw material sourcing policy adheres to the highest

environment, social and safety standards. We assess and

monitor the performance of key suppliers on

sustainability to ensure compliance with local

regulations in chemicals procurement and follow

stringent safety practices during transportation. Our

contractors are required to follow the national labour

laws and a strict ‘No Child Labour’ policy. It is

mandatory for the contractors to receive training on

safety and health. Our Supplier Code of Conduct gives

guidance to all the suppliers on key requirements

related to sustainability.

Initiatives

• Developed alternate Renewable Solvents as an

replacement of synthetic petro base Solvent. THF is

now Completely replaced with M-THF in Grignard

Process.

• Engaging with BASF to increase the supply of

Renewable Lorol – a key raw material for producing

Hexyl Esters. Increased volume of renewable

hexanol by 10%.

Safety in Logistic:

The transportation of chemicals is done in

safe and GPS-enabled vehicles designed to

carry such chemicals. The drivers are

trained for hazard management in case of

any accidents. TREM (Transport

Emergency) cards are used for

transportation.

We have taken membership of Nicer-globe to have better control

over transportation of hazardous chemicals. An emergency

response system is established to take care of any unforeseen

incidents. Training is provided to the warehouse staff handling

and storing these materials. The safety documents such as

Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), the risk assessment,

compatibility study etc., are ensured before the material is

purchased at site. 15

products etc. As of now, a total of Twenty One

substances are registered under REACH and we took a

Lead role and acted as Lead Registrant for one of the

Product Hydratropic Alcohol. Few More REACH

Registration are also under progress.

Our product stewardship agenda includes leadership and

strategy; education, awareness and communication programs,

product responsibility management, reduction in toxic

substance in products and processes, extended producer

responsibility, sustainable design and engagement of

voluntary codes and standards for reducing environmental

impact.

To further strengthen our responsible business agenda, we have

acquired ISO 14001: 2015 and ISO 9001:2005 and ISO

45001:2018Currently, we have completed the external training

session on EMS and OHSAS and are further on our way to

integrate all three systems as “Integrated Management Systems”

(IMS).

To better our performance, we continually seek the inputs of these two stakeholder groups through evaluations and surveys based on various aspects. Through channels such as employee satisfaction surveys, customer surveys, feedback surveys and market research, we regularly monitor our performance. We include feedback from key stakeholders into our business decisions and into our R&D efforts, thus helping us create a robust business with a quality product portfolio. WATER AND ENERGYWater is a primal part of our operations at BVCPL; one

of our key material aspects. We primarily use water for

domestic purposes and for industrial processes such as

manufacturing, cooling, heating, cleaning etc. We are

committed to contributing to sustainable use of water

within our facilities. Our water management agenda

focuses on efficient and effective usage of water

resources at both process level, as well as domestic level.

The main source of water used in BVCPL is from the

Ground water supply .We continually monitor, review

and analyze water consumption across our operations to

understand consumption patterns. Monitoring also helps

us identify focus points, to further develop our water

management framework.

At BVCPL , we fully understand the energy intensiveness of the chemical sector, thus making

it a key material aspect to our business. All our processes are aligned to improve energy

efficiency; helping us in our vision to mitigate climate change. Our energy goals are focused

on three key parameters- use of innovative technologies, conservation of energy and

development of efficient projects. Through our Green goals, we envision to reduce more than

7 % percent of our energy consumption by the year 2020. Our key projects to manage energy

consumption include interventions to reduce the usage of renewable Fuel such as Biomass

Briquettes. Energy Efficiency being one of the key aspects of our sustainability agenda, we

have strategized various measures to reduce specific energy consumption, thus helping us

meet our green goals and targets.

In 2020-21, a total of 336.8 KWH of energy was consumed considering both the Facilities

which was 4.68 % lesser than last year consumption of 352.59 KWH. Reduction of 4.68 mt

In the Chemical Industry, waste management is an extremely prudent aspect. At

BVCPL, we have developed a robust waste management framework to meet with

the sustainability challenges of the chemical industry. Waste Reduction is a key

aspect of our climate change mitigation agenda; all our material use and

manufacturing processes are conducted in a conscious manner to yield minimal

waste. Following the concepts of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, we go beyond

compliance in ensuring effective waste management. The waste generated from

our facilities is well within the permissible limits required by local, regional and

national norms.

Our waste management strategy includes collection, segregation, management and

disposal. We have an in-house effluent treatment plant (ETP) to treat wastewater

generated at our facilities. The biological and chemical sludge generated from the

ETP disposed off in Landfilling.

Identified and recognized the waste stream of the product which have good

calorific value with less carbon emission. This grade of waste stream is disposed

to cement industries where it is utilized as fuel in cement kiln after co-processing

at government authorized co-processor

In 2020-21, a total of 1580.34 MT of waste was sent for co-processing

considering both the Facilities which was 45.35 % higher than last years value of

1087.24 MT.

Likewise, a total of 324.26 MT of waste was sent for land filling Considering

We have introduced a new metric for this current strategy period, which is the

percentage of our total waste volume (tonnes) that is used to generate off-site

energy. We Are making significant progress in our efforts to convert waste to

energy.

In order to achieve this , we have Identified and recognized the waste stream of

the product which have good calorific value with less carbon emission.

This grade of waste stream is sold out to cement industries where it is utilized

as fuel in cement kiln after co-processing at government authorized co-

Effluent Management is an integral aspect of our sustainable waste management

strategy. Aligned with our vision to build a water positive enterprise, we work

relentlessly to minimise effluents and maximise recycling and reusing activities

within our facilities.

We continually monitor, review and manage our effluent performance to find gaps

in the system. To manage effluents generated from our facilities, we have put in

place an effluent treatment plant. Our effluent management strategy has helped us

reduce impact on water resources near our operational areas.

We have an in-house effluent treatment plant (ETP) to treat wastewater generated

at our facilities. The biological and chemical sludge generated from the ETP is

then disposed off in Landfilling.

Combine Capacity of ETP plant of both the Manufacturing Facility is 6300

KL/Year which include 4500 KL / Y for Unit I and 1800 KL/Y for another Unit.

In 2020-21, we have treated 5431 KL of Effluent and discharged into common

Effluent Treatment Facility which was 3.51 % higher than the previous year

treated effluent qty of 5246 KL.

In order to recycle the domestic water, we have installed STP (Sewage Treatment

Plant) at our manufacturing facility. It includes biological processes to remove

pollutants. Its aim to produce an environmentally safe water, called effluent, and a

solid waste, called sludge or biosolids, suitable for disposal or reuse

Water from the admin buildings, toilets, baths, showers, canteens, sinks and

collected first in Collection tank and treated well in STP plant.

Treated water from the STP Recycled back and reused in the toilets blocks and

gardening purpose. This led to the reduction in water consumption of 1800 KL in

2020-21.

At BVCPL , we recognise the importance of emission management in the chemical industry, making it a key material aspect to our business . We are the

signatories to “Responsible Care” and thereby making our commitment public. We have also reported fully for the third time our carbon emissions via the

Carbon Discloser Project.

Over the past five years, we have better understood the difficulty in achieving year on- year energy reductions and Scope 1 and 2 CO2 emissions savings. Our

best opportunities for further improvements are through increased efficiency and fuel use changes, and we will focus on these areas in the coming years. We will

also install new technology to identify potential savings and explore new technologies to achieve our goals.

Our sustainability vision and our continual efforts have helped us reduce a considerable amount of emissions. To manage our carbon impact and achieve

our emission reduction goals, we have strategized a plethora of measures including interventions such as replacing fossil fuel with biomass in boilers,

utilisation of pitch in boilers to enable the reuse of organic waste as fuel and many more.

In 2017, we started to report our CO2 emissions for both scope 1(direct energy) and Scope 2(Indirect energy) from purchased electricity), Additionally ,

during 2017 , we started a project to screen our significant Scope 3 emissions( broad scope of upstream and downstream emissions).

During 2020, our CO2 emissions (Scope 1 & 2) in Tonnes per tonne of production increased 1.44 % for Scope 1 and decreased 4.66 % for Scope 2

compared to the prior year .

EMISSION – Scope 1 & 2

2626 _ BVCPL SUSTAINABILITY REPORT 2020-21

EMISSION – Scope 3

Understanding our Scope 3 Green House gas Emissions (GHGs)

Scope 3 GHS emissions are much broader than Scope 1 and 2 and can include anything from employee travel to “upstream” emissions, embodied in the products we

purchase and process, and : downstream” emissions, which are associated with transporting and disposing of the products we sell.

Since 2017, we have initiated reporting Scope 3 emissions alongwith Scope a and 2 under CDP. Assessment of Scope 3 emissions done based on the GHG Protocol and

then disclosed in CDP plateform. To understand our critical Scope 3 emissions, we calculated annual emissions

(from 1st April 2019 to 30th March 2020) from a range of upstream Scope 3

Activities, including:

•Downstream Transportation and distribution (Sold Product)

•Upstream Transportation and distribution (Purchased Goods)

•Business Travel

•Employee Commuting

The downstream Scope 3 activities such as waste generated within operations,

were excluded from the assessment (for reason of practicality and resources)

but may be included in future evaluations.

Our total Scope 3 emissions for the period FY20-21 were calculated at

27,59,066 tonnes of CO2, which is as usual greater than our Scope 1 and 2

emissions combined( for the same period) .Emissions from the Downstream

Transportation and Distribution accounted for approximately 72.57% of total

Scope 3 Emissions whereas emissions from Upstream transportation

contributing 27.42 %.Contribution of the Emissions from the Business Travel

and Employee Commuting is very minor which was 0.00001 % and 0.0018%

respectively. A summary of the main Scope 3 emissions in shown on left side .Scope 3 GHG Emissions27

At BVCPL, we apply green chemistry principles to all of our chemical

transformations. The use of Green Chemistry principles is an essential

part of our process-development activities. We have placed particular

focus on principle of Green chemistry , covering catalysis . As a means of

achieving lower energy requirements, reduced waste and other benefits,

this principle is particularly important because it touches on several other

principles of green chemistry.

We continue to invest in areas such as catalytic chemistry organo—

inorgano and metalo or in combination to devise cleaner processes. To

better manage our overall environmental impacts, we have established

couple of environment friendly , recyclable green catalyst for some of

our salicylates group products.

A tangible benefit achieved last year which allowed us to reduce the

waste by 0.06 tonnes/ tonnes to 0.022 tonnes / tonnes of production of

salicylates which end up with the waste reduction of 63 % from this

product stream.

Similar efforts to reduce the water in product process is triggered and

Targeted to reduce the water load at least by 20 % compared to current

SUCCESS STORIES SUSTAINABLE SOURCING

We use approximately 03 different sustainably-produced raw materials each year to produce our renewable products at our manufacturing premises. Proportions of individual raw materials in selected product portfolio vary from year to year, depending on their availability, price, and specific market requirements. These three renewable raw material consist of Iso Amyl Alcohol , C-6 Alcohol and Methyl THF.

The 2-methyl tetrahydrofuran made from renewable agricultural by-products from corn cob waste by converting the available pentoses by acid hydrolysis which makes 2-Methyl THF a renewable one. Iso Amyl alcohol we use originated from the Fossil Oil / Molasses and the source of Palm oil / Coconut oil makes C-6 Alcohol a perfect renewable raw material.

In FY 2020-21, around 5.81% of the raw materials we purchased worldwide were from renewable resources which includes 1058 tonnes of C-6 , 55.42 tonnes of Methyl THF and 389 tonnes of Iso Amyl Alcohol.
