Chaverim Yekarim, Installation is over! It’s official! I am so proud to call myself Beth Shalom’s official rabbi. I have already been the acting rabbi since the summer, but this moving and sacred ceremony marks a new level to our partnership. Everything came together so perfectly for a smooth weekend. Thanks to the tireless work of our army of volunteers; the synagogue was spotless and prepared, the food delicious and abundant, the new pictures hung, the programs printed, the remarks prepared, and the many guests greeted. When I say it like this, it sounds just like a wedding! After a big simcha/happy occasion, it’s easy to feel a bit of anti-climactic angst or uneasiness. After all, we spend so many hours planning and executing meticulously so that everything goes smoothly, and then, all of a sudden, it ends! What do we do now? How do we carry the same level of excitement and joy into our normal lives? Apart from the installation, this is something we face now with the start of the secular New Year. Beautiful holidays and celebrations have marked the past couple of months only to end abruptly. No more spinning dreidels, fried goodness, ringing in the New Year with food and drink. The time has come to make good on the promises, and get going in the sacred task of living our lives well. I believe that the holiday and celebrations serve to elevate our consciousness so that we may appreciate the passing cycles of life. They remind us that life is to be lived with, and God is to be served, with joy. The words of the psalmist tell us: ivdu et ha’shem b’simcha, bo lifanav birnana/Serve God with happiness...Come before God with joy. What would it mean to really internalize these words and approach life with deep gratitude and happiness? Together we will pray and sing, study and discuss, and fulfill the ultimate mission of Beth Shalom by living up to its meaning: to be a House of Peace. I have some ideas for 2017, and I look forward to hearing yours as well. My first order of business remains strengthening what we already do well: prayer, study, holidays, and community. Thank you to everyone who came together to help make Rabbi Natan’s Installation Shabbat such a memorable milestone in our congregation’s history. This simcha was another example of Beth Shalom at its best.To maintain our successful arrangement with Natan as our full-time rabbi who participates remotely half the time, we must support each other in a number of different ways. Please join us, not only for Shabbat services when Natan is in town, but also during those Shabbatot for which our fellow members have diligently prepared to lead when Natan is in Atlanta. It is an amazing blessing that we have such a deep bench of congregants who can lead services, and we should try and support them whenever possible. Also please respond enthusiastically when you are contacted by the leadership of YACHAD — our Beth Shalom Synagogue Caring Committee — regarding how you might become involved as we come TOGETHER to help and support one another. YACHAD will help coordinate our communal efforts to fulfill our holy obligations to one another. Those efforts will include, but not be limited to, gemilut chasadim (acts of loving-kindness), hachnasat orchim (hospitality), and bikur cholim (visiting the sick).Thanks to the efforts of the Finance Committee, we are
This being the first Brotherhood column of the calendar year, it is appropriate that just as we judge ourselves during the High Holy Days, we should judge ourselves on the calendar year as well, considering our conduct in 2016.Did we do enough Tikkun olam to help others locally and in the world who may be less fortunate than us? Whether it be victims of hunger, floods, anti-Semitism or other religious persecution, we should look inward and determine if we can
do more to help alleviate these problems.Rabbi Robert Levine, who previously spoke at our Synagogue, wrote a book titled, “There Is No Messiah and you’re it.” The gist of the book is that we are the Messiah and only we can change the world. The President’s Cornerrestructuring our annual “ask”. Since we truly have never treated financial commitments as “dues”, and Beth Shalom has never denied membership based on ability to pay, we are now asking for an annual financial “pledge” from members. Beth Shalom Synagogue costs about $3,000 per year per family to operate. We recognize that not every family will be able to make that level of financial contribution and that some will commit much more. All of us contribute to Beth Shalom in countless other, non-financial ways as we strive to keep our beloved synagogue healthy so that it can continue to provide a spiritual foundation for our lives. By now each member has received the Finance Committee letter and the accompanying Annual Financial Commitment form that offers some guidelines based on income. Please give thoughtful consideration to your 2017 financial commitment to Beth Shalom. We encourage you to give generously so that our kehillah k’dosha — our holy community — can continue to be a vibrant Jewish home for all of us as we pray, learn, celebrate and support each other. Sisterhood’s efforts for Rabbi Natan’s installation celebration and our Havdalukkah (Havdallah + Hanukkah) celebration were a success! Thank you to everyone who joined us and who contributed to the food and festivities.It’s time to start looking forward to the annual Corned Beef Sandwich sale. Keep an eye out for the date soon and please consider what you can do to help. We’ll need volunteers to make sandwiches, sort pickles, pack orders and make deliveries.

a weekly basis to help patients with cardiovascular issues assures that the Heart Institute will continue to provide the highest level of care for its patients.This is another example of Hadassah’s wonderful work. This important activity gives us visibility in the community and helps to raise funds.Coming up next year, please start to read our next selection for our book review. It was recommended that we read “All the Light We Cannot See” by Anthony Doer. We will meet in March so this gives plenty of time to read and enjoy and then come to discuss. HadassahDear Hadassah Members and Friends,Hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season and the glow of the Chanukah lights. We want to share some exciting news about what is happening at Hadassah and how your gifts to Hadassah are put to work. It has been announced that the Hadassah Medical Organization has opened Israel’s first Heart Valve Disease Clinic, which is geared toward detecting and treating the most complicated cases of heart valve disease--a growing problem in an aging population. Efficiently treating valve disease and minimizing life-threatening risk factors such as heart attack remains an ongoing struggle for cardiovascular specialists. A ‘cardio team’ is needed to treat a patient suffering from heart valve disease. The multidisciplinary cardio team solution at the Clinic will help streamline the process so that a patient will receive all the necessary echocardiograms and other exams needed to diagnose and begin treatment within a week’s time. With all the medical professionals involved in the patient’s care working in synch, this pilot project thus cuts down the time that the patient remains in diagnostic limbo. Further, the centralized team approach within the clinic allows for more accurate assessment with better data collection and enables the specialists to make the best choice regarding personalized treatment--whether it is surgery, catheterization procedures or medical management. The uniqueness of Hadassah’s multi-talented cardio team and the willingness to meet on

December was full of fun and adventure as we explored values and manners, colors and shapes, story elements, science activities, ABCs and 123s, and of course our favorite, Hanukkah!On December 8th, Rayner Center was visited by BREC’s Zoomobile. Our children and staff watched as Mr. Brian from BREC discussed facts and brought a few furry friends for our children to pet and see. This was a time for our students to learn more about our four legged friends and to understand the importance of using gentle hands and listening ears.Rayner Center was filled with smiles, laughter, and enthusiasm on December 15th as we enjoyed our annual Hanukkah party. The children enjoyed the celebration with face painting, cookie decorating, fishing, treats, Mousercise,

Many thanks to our parents for volunteering their efforts and for helping make the day as great as it was. Todah Rabbah!January offers a new outlook and a fresh beginning.
