Cantor’s Notes

Cantor’s Notes

In two weeks we will be reading parshat Y itro which contains the Ten Commandments. In honour of this Torah portion I would like to share with you a column written by a colleague of mine, Hazzan Robert Zalkin, for his community in Indianapolis, Indiana. I tried to do my own version of the following a few years ago, but his wit far exceeds mine.

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS Of

Congregational Singing

1. Thou Shalt Sing! 2. Thou Shalt Sing with all thy heart, with all thy soul and with all thy

might. 3. Thou Shalt Sing fearlessly, ignoring the possible wondering glances

of your neighbors. They would like to sing with you if they had the nerve and they WILL sing with you, if you continue.

4. Thou shalt Sing Joyfully, as it is written by the prophet Isaiah, “Sing, O Heaven, be joyful, O earth, and break forth into singing, O mountains.”

5. Thou Shalt Sing Reverently, for music is prayer. 6. Thou Shalt Not be Afraid to Sing, for though an individual may pray

in prose or even in wordless silence, a congregation must sing. 7. Thou Shalt Not Resist new melodies, for is it not written in the Book

of Psalms, “O sing unto the Lord a new song”? 8. Thou Shalt Not Mumble the melody, but shalt sing it out loud, even

if with occasional mistakes. 9. Thou Shalt not Hesitate to sing together with the trained voice of the

Cantor. He wants you to join with him. 10. Thou Shalt Not Forget the words of the Psalmist, “I will sing unto

the Lord as long as I live.”

Cantor’s Notes

My fervent hope is that our combined voices and spirit, inspired by the “commandments” above, will always fill this synagogue with such an atmosphere that all who enter here will feel that this is a place where music inspires the deepest aspects of our being.

Normally I don’t start an article off with a sales pitch, but this month I’d like to make an exception. If you have not already done so, now is the time to purchase your ticket to our Robbie Burstein Dinner on Thursday, February 13th. This year we have limited the event to 100 participants, and tickets are going fast. This will be a great way to gear up for the 10th Anniversary Robbie Burnstein Dinner in 2021. Yasher koach to Len Seidman, the originator and chair of Beth Tzedec’s favourite party! Here’s another reason to celebrate. As we enter into the second year of Jewish Calgary’s LIFE & LEGACY program, I am happy to report that Beth Tzedec achieved and then exceeded our stretch goal of more than 25 after-lifetime gifts totalling more than $1 million in future commitments. We are eternally grateful to those congregants and friends who have made their gift to the future of Beth Tzedec and other deserving charitable organizations. Todah Rabah to my partners on the Beth Tzedec LIFE & LEGACY team – Maxine Fischbein, Josh Inhaber, Max Lipsman and Cheryl Shiell for their amazing work. Please reach out to any of us if you are considering a legacy gift. We are grateful for both the financial support of our congregants and your personal participation in making Beth Tzedec the best it can be. Toward that end, we are reaching out to you through an online survey and focus groups so that we can gather feedback from you on a range of issues. Your responses will help the leadership team to plan effectively for the future and to ensure we are hiring clergy and professional staff that will help us to meet our collective goals. Thanks for sharing your vision with us! I strongly believe that Beth Tzedec congregants understand the financial challenges currently experienced by charitable organizations including our Synagogue. Many factors – including an aging building that is increasingly expensive to maintain – mean that Synagogue leaders and congregants will be facing some difficult choices in the near and long terms. Successive Beth Tzedec lay leadership teams have worked diligently and successfully through many years to achieve balanced budgets and to maintain membership commitments that are stable. Your current Executive and Board are wrestling

with the need for a new furnace as well as a new roof, costly capital improvements for which we must raise additional funds. In previous Shofar articles I promised that we would be taking steps to engage our young adults and youth. I want to keep that promise and it’s a priority for this executive and board that will be reflected in the budget we will present at our next Annual General Meeting this June. Once again, your participation in the upcoming online survey is critical. Hard copies will be available in the Synagogue office for those who prefer to provide written responses. Please take the opportunity to complete it and to sign up for a focus group. Finally, I want to thank Cantor Russell Jayne and Executive Director Max Lipsman for their professionalism and dedication. While they have been very successful in ensuring that gaps don’t develop at Beth Tzedec, a Synagogue of our size and complexity requires at least one more senior staff member. Todah rabah to all our congregants for your patience and understanding as we plan the prudent and effective go-forward plan that will inform future hiring. David Inhaber, President

Beth Tzedec Shofar Search Update

8 Beth Tzedec Congregation February 2020

Search Update Prior to the start of the secular New Year, Beth Tzedec opened up a discussion with the Conservative movement’s Rabbinical Assembly (RA) toward a search for a Rabbi. In December, Beth Tzedec President David Inhaber and Past President Maxine Fischbein met with representatives of the Rabbinical Assembly (RA) when they were in Boston for the USCJ 20/20 Judaism Convention. The RA had previously requested that we suspend our search until the request of some of our congregants for reinstatement of Rabbi Osadchey had been addressed and resolved. The vote at the Special General Meeting this past October affirmed the steps that had been taken by the Board of Directors and Executive and cleared the way for a search. Our first steps included striking a task force that will be seeking the input of congregants via a survey and targeted focus groups. The survey and discussions will tackle a number of Synagogue-related topics including our clergy search. The Promotion of Cantor Russell Jayne As reported in the January issue of Shofar, Cantor Russell Jayne was accepted into the distance learning rabbinical program offered by the Pluralistic Rabbinical Seminary. He has begun his journey and is especially passionate about the practicums that will result in innovative education and programming for Beth Tzedec congregants and other interested community members under Cantor Jayne’s leadership. At our January meeting, the Board of Directors endorsed the Executive’s proposal to elevate Cantor Jayne’s position from Chazzan to Kol Bo. Kol Bo is a Hebrew term that literally means “all-in-one”; this title is associated with a growing number of cantors who lead congregations in a para-rabbinical capacity. As Kol Bo, Cantor Jayne will be the senior clergy member at Beth Tzedec. While continuing to serve as our Chazzan, he will also have primary responsibility for aspects of Synagogue life typically performed by congregational Rabbis. As a graduate of the H. L. Miller Cantorial School at the Conservative Movement’s Jewish Theological Seminary, Cantor Jayne is already qualified to officiate all life cycle ceremonies, including weddings, brit milah, baby namings, b’nai mitzvahs, funerals and unveilings. In matters of kashrut, he consults with community Mashgiach Phil Wolf. In the event that a halachik matter is raised, Cantor Jayne consults with either

Rabbi Daniel Nevins, Dean of the Rabbinical School of the Jewish Theological Seminary, or with Rabbi Daniel Shevitz of the Rabbinical Assembly of Southern California. We are blessed by Cantor Jayne’s dedication to Beth Tzedec and to the Calgary Jewish community as well as his passion for Jewish education and a work ethic that is second to none. Next Steps While we had been gearing up for a rabbinical search, Cantor Jayne’s decision to study toward smicha has opened up exciting new possibilities for Beth Tzedec. Informal feedback from congregants has been supportive of the lay leadership’s choice to elevate the Cantor’s current position to Kol Bo and to consider him as an applicant for the position of Congregational Rabbi once he has earned his smicha. In the near term, pending further feedback from congregants, it is possible that our search for another professional staff member will focus upon recently graduated clergy members or educators with proven talent in reaching youth and young families. In both the near term and the long run, we will endeavour to remain flexible and creative in determining our optimal staffing model. We are urging all congregants to participate in the online survey you will be receiving in the near future. Hard copies will be available for those who prefer to provide their feedback in writing. Focus groups are also being organized. If you wish to participate in those smaller-group discussions, please contact Vice President Lorne Pearl at [email protected] or 403-461-6583. For more information on personnel matters, please contact Beth Tzedec President David Inhaber at [email protected] or 403-998-3283 or Past President and Personnel Chair Maxine Fischbein at [email protected] or 403-616-0320.

Here is my next article in a series featuring the wonderful lay leaders who lead the services for our minyanim. I was curious to know how long they had been leading the davening, how they learned to lead and what their earliest memories of shul are.

I have known Maxine Fischbein for several years now and I am always in awe of all the different parts of the service that she can lead and perform. Everything that she does seems so effortless, yet she

assures me that she does need to put some time in studying before she is going to read Torah or chant the Haftorah. Her commitment to the services and to the shul are very evident. I thought that surely, I would have time to ask her these three questions as we spent six days together in Boston, but she was always on the go- attending sessions at the 20/20 Judaism conference hosted by the USCJ from morning to night.

I finally managed to grab her back in Calgary to ask her my questions.

Me: How long have you been leading the davening?

Maxine: I have been davening since 2008.

Me: How did you learn to daven?

Maxine: I had great teachers at the Edmonton Talmud Torah. They taught us the various parts of the service. I also went to Sunday school at Beth Shalom and I attended Junior Congregation. So that got me on my way. I began attending minyan regularly. One day, our shammas at the time, Alex Shkolnik, started feeling ill. He looked at me and said, “You. Up here,” and I continued the service. After that, I thought that I should learn how to do it properly. So, in 2008, I attended a ten-day camp in upstate New York. The program, called IMUN, was a great one. It was for lay daveners and they taught us the trope and the nusach which is the melody for each of the various services and prayers. I found this program to be very helpful. They cancelled it, which was a shame, but I hear that they are going to be offering it again and that makes me happy.

Me: What is your earliest memory of synagogue?

Maxine: I remember running my fingers along the velvet seats of the Beth

Me: Thank you, Maxine.

Come join us when Maxine is davening. Her soft, melodic voice is very comforting. I wish that I had her poise, confidence and know-how. She generally davens in the evening, but is always willing to fill in when she can- though early mornings are not her favourite.

MINYAN MATTERS

* a spiritual comfort zone for meditation, contemplation, prayer

* an opportunity for regular, meaningful Torah study in a relaxed environment

* a venue for learning Jewish skills – how to have an aliyah, how to lift and wrap the Torah

* the place where one fulfills the mitzvah saying kaddish for a loved one during the period of mourning or on yahrzeit

* a source of spiritual meaning and connection in our lives – the feeling of satisfaction that comes from being part of the “community” (of 10 or more) that

makes communal Jewish prayer possible

Beyond Dispute: Debates that Shape Jewish Life

Debates - philosophical, spiritual, ethical, and cultural - are at the heart of Judaism and Jewish life. Are religion and reason compatible? Can Jewish law change, based on context? How do we teach and talk about the Holocaust and the State of Israel? Should we prioritize Jewish causes or universal causes in our giving? Is Jewish tradition intrinsically patriarchal and

ableist? Is our relationship with God defined by human obligation or divine compassion?

Beyond Dispute is a multi-month course (11 classes), run by Cantor Russell Jayne, that will submerse all those who attend into a substantive, text-based exploration of how these debates have been manifested over the course of Jewish history, and lead them into a rich discussion about their continued resonance for contemporary Jewish life.

Dates: February 4, 11, March 3, 24, May 5, 26, June 2, 9, July 14, 28, August 11 Time: 6:30-8:00pm Cost: Members: $10.00 Guests: $18.00 for the course To register, please contact the office at 403-255-8688 or [email protected]. Class size limited to 15 participants.

Yad Club - Torah Reading Initiative Beth Tzedec encourages congregants to

become active Torah readers. Learning to read Torah requires dedication and

discipline to master the melodies and techniques for reading directly from the

sacred scroll. For those who are successful in this endeavor and complete 14 (The Hebrew numerical equivalent of Yad) Torah readings here at Beth Tzedec, the congregation will be honoured to provide special recognition by awarding

a personalized Yad. For more information contact Cantor Russ at

[email protected] or 403-255-8688 ext. 4.

Bikkur Cholim: You are a Life-Line!

When our members are ill at home or in the hospital, a caring

visit or phone call can lift their spirits and help them heal physically and spiritually.

Please call or email Cantor Russ (403-255-8688 or

[email protected]) with the names of congregants who

are hospitalized or are ill at home. We will arrange a visit or a caring note. Please know that we would rather receive 20 calls about the

same person than none at all.
