FINANCE COMMITTEE

Brothers and Sisters, Happy New Year! 2018 was another busy and productive year

in the life of Bethany Church. Our calendar seemed to be full of wonderful mission and ministry opportunities throughout the whole year! I imagine that our 2019 calendar will also be full of wonderful mission and ministry opportunities. How great it is to be the hands and feet of Jesus to our neighbors and world.

The people of Bethany contributed to missions near and far. As near as the GUEST program that we hosted right here in our church for 2 weeks, to overseas missions in Africa through our connectional giving with the apportionments that we send to the Virginia United Methodist Conference. With our missions money and labor we are changing lives for Christ! Your 2nd mile giving for 2018 was nothing short of amazingly generous. You gave generously to the Salvation Army and The Bread for Life food banks, bought flowers, Angel tree gifts, brought items to church for the WRCC Christmas Shoppe, made quilts and prayer shawls, cooked meals for our shut-ins, made kits for conference, provided school supplies for children here in Gloucester, gave to the Mattaponi Healing Eagle Clinic, mailed greeting cards, drank lemonade and ate cookies to help our children raise money for CHKD. You have been generous to our Endowment Fund, Pastor’s Discretionary Fund, Children and Youth Ministries and our George Nelson Memorial Concert series. You love one another and care about each other’s wellbeing. All of this is Stewardship. Supporting Bethany financially, physically and spiritually gives everyone the opportunity to make great things happen for God!

You also fulfilled the Faith Promises that you made to our church, supporting the many ministries and missions that are in our general budget. All of our bills and District and Conference Apportionments were paid in full and on time all year long! Praise God for His continued blessings!

Our Trustees ministry is filled with the hard work and dedication of keeping our facility well-maintained and inviting for all who visit here. We keep our heat pumps and air conditioners serviced so that we are able to open our doors to our neighbors and friends all year long. For someone coming to Bethany for a neighborhood meeting, Bethany’s Bazaar, Abingdon Woman’s Club

yard sale or picking their child up from Scouts, this might be the only time they are inside of a church building. Showing hospitality to the AARP for a few months each year is an amazing gift to our community. We offer them a spacious and safe place to meet. How will God use this to change His world? You never know whose heart will be touched by simply having a comfortable place to rest while waiting to have their taxes done!

My heart is overwhelmed by the love and grace that each of you so generously share. I thank God every day for allowing me to serve Him with each of you. I pray that as 2019 begins our eyes are set upon Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior and that all that we do is pleasing to Him.

May we each serve God with open hearts and minds. Blessings, Dolores Breen Finance Committee Chair

BAZAAR NEWS We want to thank everyone for their generous support of our 2018 Bazaar! We raised over $22,000 for missions! We will have a special service to distribute the funds to twenty-three local and state agencies, including money for Pastor’s Discretionary Fund. Watch your bulletin and Banner for the date – you don’t want to miss seeing what groups will benefit from all your hard work! SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS A new year – a new commitment to attend Sunday School! Come join your friends in one of seven adult Sunday School classes or in a class for children and youth. We will resume our Second Sunday Breakfast on January 13 at 9:30 a.m. Hope to see you there!

THANK YOU NOTES During the course of the year, the members of Abingdon Woman’s Club (AWC) work hard to raise funds for the community and provide fellowship. This could not happen without Bethany’s generous support in providing our meeting space as well as a location for our annual yard sale. It is with great pride that the woman’s club presents a check for $500. The AWC is honored to donate to Bethany United Methodist Church and to support the excellent work you do to serve the residents of Gloucester County. – Abingdon Woman’s Club

Thank you for your donation on 11/25/2018 of $382.00 from Rudy Shackelford’s concert to the Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society (GMHS). Your kindness and generosity enables GMHS to help more animals each year, provide the best in veterinary care, and expand our life-saving reach to help local animal control shelters. You make our mission to provide compassionate care possible. – Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society

Thank you for partnering with the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). Through your gift, you are helping to provide humanitarian relief when war, conflict, or natural disaster disrupts life to such an extent that communities are unable to recover on their own…One hundred percent of your gift through The Advance, the designated giving channel of the United Methodist Church, will go directly to the people who need it most. Thank you for giving so generously. UMCOR US Disaster Response & Recovery $75.00 UMCOR – Where Most Needed 50.00

The 2019 Altar Flower chart has been posted in the main hallway for those who wish to sign up for flowers in the New Year.

Whenever possible, please return the florist’s vases to the church office or sacristy so they can be cleaned and reused by Gloucester Florist. This not only helps the florist but also ensures that we continue receiving quality arrangements at an affordable price. Thank you.
