Term 4 Highlights Term 4 HighlightsELC Christmas Concert

Last term, the Reception classes, partici-pated in a Design Thinking project, which took us on a journey of learning and cre-ative thinking. ‘Design Thinking’ is a mod-el of learning that the teaching staff have been exploring over the last 12 months in our professional development. This model of learning encourages students to explore a problem, empathise with those affected, think about multiple solu-tions to the problem, research and inves-tigate and create and build a prototype to demonstrate the solution. While all of this sounds like quite a lot for Reception students to process and understand, we were able to guide students through this process and help them to think deeply about the problem that we identified.

The students identified a problem, where we discovered that not all of the Recep-tions had been on a picnic! We discussed that this was simply ‘not fair’ and we be-gan to explore our options for creating a perfect picnic experience. The students then made the decisions about where we would go, what we would take, who would come, what we will do and how we were going to get there.

This project was very much student-led and the teachers provided students with lots of shared learning time. This also meant that we had to give students the freedom to make the choices and we had to work towards making these decisions come together for our big picnic experi-ence.

The culmination of all of this planning, thinking, and organising ended with a special day out. Our adventure started at the Mawson Lakes train station, where we travelled by public transport into the city and then caught the tram to Glenelg beach. At the beach, we played on the playground, built sandcastles, went on a treasure hunt and of course had a picnic lunch! We finished our day with an ice-cream before we headed back to school. We really had such a special time and we were so proud of the learning the stu-dents had participated in. A big thank you to the parents who helped us on our excursion!

Reception ExcursionEnd of Year Concert

Please join us for the Upper Primary End of Year Concert which will be held on Wednesday 6th December. 4WY Action Plan

4WY students have been working hard to implement their action plans to re-duce / recycle / reuse waste products.

You can help us reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill by bring-ing in the following types of products -: used coffee pods, old batteries, un-wanted clothing, old art supplies, used beauty products, plastic lids, fresh food scraps for the chickens, soft plastics, al-uminium cans, toothpaste products, can tabs, bread tags and used mail-ing satchels just to name a few. Any other ideas just come and talk to us.

Check out the posters that are around the school.

P & F News

In Week 4, we had a visit from four SAPOL Officers who presented a Cyber Safety presentation to our Year 5 and Year 6 stu-dents. It was an excellent morning, with the presentation placing a heavy empha-sis on using social media ethically and safely. Some of the main points from the presentation were;

This website is an essential go-to for par-ents, detailing information about cyber safety and information relating to gam-ing, social media and networking. The SAPOL officers taught our students what to do if they are cyber bullied or are feel-ing worried about the content they are reading.

• Reminder about the 13 Years+ rating on most social media

SAPOL reminded our students again about the inherent dangers of access-ing and using a social media app that requires users to be 13 Years+ old. Our

students were shown again how to re-port underage users to in order to close the illegal accounts.

SAPOL showed our students a very emotionally charged social experiment, enlightening viewers to the dangers of giving personal information over social media to people they think they know. The link is confronting and well worth watching with your child, and is a great conversation starter on the dangers of communicating with people they do not know via a social media app. The title of the provoking YouTube clip is, “Child Predator Abduction Experiments (Stranger Danger)” created by Coby Per-sin.

• Don’t share your password!

The SAPOL presenters made a good point saying, “You wouldn’t share you toothbrush with your friends, why would you share your personal password?” The dangers of sharing their passwords, or

a lack of secure passwords, was heavily emphasised during the presentation.

Another excellent resource for parents and students alike is the “Thinkuknow.org.au” website. The Parents Portal is full of excellent resources on supporting and helping your child navigate the cyber world. It is also a site that offers a place to make a report of cyber abuse. As a par-ent, it would be well worth your efforts to check out this website.

Our students have a significant number of people they can turn to for advice and support in regards to cyber safety. Their teachers are also an excellent resource, who are readily available and accessible. Please encourage your child to seek their teachers out should they be having a cy-ber issue or have any questions.

I wish you all a wonderful week,

God bless you,

Deb Clifford

BCS Disco 2017... what a blast! Fluoro sticks were glowing, hands and hips were shaking and the latest music was pump-ing! Two hundred and fifty students donned their favourite outfits and excit-edly danced and sang the night away. Friendships were strengthened, fresh dance moves were trialled and fistfuls of fun was had by all!

Thank you to all the parents and care giv-ers who kindly supported this event by purchasing tickets, by helping their danc-ing divas and funky fellas get ready and by giving up their Friday night to drive to and from school (again!).

Thank you also to the wonderful team of P&F members, parents and staff who generously volunteered their time and talents to prepare for, promote and pull off this event.

Finally, thank you to the fabulous stu-dents who said 'yes' to this event, who encouraged their friends and fellow

classmates to come along and who danced as if no one was looking! Our professional DJ once again commented on how enthusiastic, well behaved and inclusive you all were.

Please have a look at the photos below and on the page opposite.

Well done to everyone involved!

SPORTS DEPARTMENT 2017 YEAR 4 TO 7 NETBALL CARNIVAL

On Wednesday November 1st Bethany took 5 teams to the annual SACSA Netball Carnival held at the District Courts at Golden Grove. There were 59 teams across the entire carnival which meant there was a great number of people in attendance. The con-ditions were really good on the day with all 5 teams playing really well. SACSA changed the concept for the boys this year with the boys playing Fast Five which made for some super quick games. We would like to congratulate the year 4/5 boys on winning their championship [first championship in netball for any boys team representing Bethany at netball] and the year 6/7 girls gold team on finishing runners up. A very special thank you to our scorers who assisted with their relevant teams all day.
