MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

TODAY

The year 2017-2018 was truly a year of change as the Rights for Persons with Disabilities Act 2016(RPD Act 2016) came into force. For Bethany Society, this was a ratification of its vision “..equity through inclusion”. The passing of this law by the Government gave us new perspectives on development and further strengthened our resolve that the twin-track approach, promoting variability specific interventions and challenging mainstream systems can lead to inclusive societies. It also gave the disability sector the tool to promote their rights so that they could be productive citizens of the country.“ Essential for some good for all..” continues to be our mantra.

Our collaborations with Government; national, regional and international NGOs and private partners helped us to focus on the inclusion of persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups into mainstream sectors of health, education, livelihoods and social inclusion. Our staff and village communities enhanced their understanding of Community Based Inclusive Development (CBID).The Universal Design of Learning (UDL) framework developed further our understanding of Inclusive Education.

The administrative restructuring of all programmes under the Community Led Accessibility Network (CLAN) and Community Led Environment Action Network (CLEAN) is promotinggreater collaboration within the various units and projects of Bethany Society. This is our Theory of Change.

Bethany Society is also accepting its role as mission multiplier through network projects which have a greater impact. This is evidenced through the State Government collaborations for designing accessible buildings, the RAISE inclusive education programme, the Meghalaya Government and Asian Development Bank inclusive skill development programme, the Community Mental Health Programme, The National Trust programme and others.. This change in strategy will continue to challenge us to move past our comfort zones



and accept the reality of collaboration and diversity beyond our own specific programmes within Bethany Society.

We rejoice and celebrate the success of our students both from formal and non-formal programmes who are moving into the world of work and into their communities with dignity and respect. Young people with diverse talents are working in government, NGOs, private companies, in their villages as entrepreneurs both within Meghalaya and other parts of India….this is our motivation.

All this is not possible without a network of support - moral, technical and financial from our Patron Sister Rosario Lopes, the Members and Governing Body of Bethany Society, the different Managing Committees, the local communities, the Government, INGOs, local NGOs, private enterprise and friends from Meghalaya, India and many other parts of the world. Our staff and programme Heads who are the backbone and silent workers behind the scenes, totally committed day after day, continue to amaze.

I feel humbled, privileged and blessed to be a part of this vibrant community who “…dream of a world where all enjoy fullness of being.”
