A Message from Bethell HospiceFiscal year 2014-15 was an exciting year for HospicePalliative Care and Bethell Hospice played an integral role.

Hospices across the province were audited as part of the AuditorGeneral’s in-depth look at Ontario’s palliative care system. Thesefindings will help map the road forward and will be imperative inimproving access to care, ensuring people have the right care,at the right time in the right place. We are very excited about thefuture opportunities and advancements of Palliative Care in Ontario.Moving forward also means continuing on our Accreditation path.We have been working steadily to ensure that as a team, we areliving our values and complying with the necessary standards tobecome a fully accredited organization. We are happy to say thatwe are well on our way to completing our goal by 2017.

Most importantly, we would like to acknowledge the contributionsof our collaborative team of health care professionals, supportstaff, volunteers, and our Foundation who work together to provideexemplary and passionate care to residential and communityclients as well as their families. We go forward into this promisingtime with thanks to all who support us in our mission, knowingthat it is only together that we make a real difference.

“The entire staff, whethermedical or volunteer, wereamazing to my Mom, Baka

and me. Without you all,I don’t know how thingswould have turned out.

This journey will always bein my heart, as you are all

my family for life.

Much love to each andevery one of you!”

Thoughts from Our Award Winning VolunteersMargalith EsterhuizenHospice Palliative Care Ontario June Callwood Award

After losing my husband to cancer a few years ago, I searchedfor something to occupy my time while at the same time allowingme to contribute to the community in which I live.

I met someone who described in great detail a wedding whichhad taken place at the hospice between a resident and herfiancée, the beauty and emotion of the moment, [and] the amazinggenerosity of spirit contributed by everyone at the hospice.

It became clear to me: by volunteering at Bethell House I wouldfind ways of being useful, allowing me at the same time theopportunity to make a difference in some small measure.

Neil MorrisVolunteer MBC Helping Hands Award

Just as Bethell Hospice was about to open, I lost my father-in-law,a man whom I liked and respected. He had succumbed to cancer, first receiving care at home and ultimately passing in a hospital. It was my first direct experience with the associated challenges. This was still fresh in my mind and heart when I learned of thecall for volunteers at Bethell. Living in Inglewood, and having aflexible work schedule, it was a "no-brainer" to sign up. It has beena very rewarding five years, and I consider myself fortunate tohave had the opportunity to contribute.

Sheilagh CrandellTown of Caledon Volunteer Achievement Award

Working in gardens has been a passion of mine for many yearsand being able to work in the lovely gardens at Bethell Hospice isespecially wonderful...the flowers and birds and deep appreciationof the residents and staff at Bethell Hospice have combined tomake this volunteering a joy!

“To all the amazing, wonderful staff of Bethell House –never have we seen such caring and respect as everyone

here shows to the residents and families. You madeDad’s last days very special to him and all his family.

Mum rested when she was at home, knowing that Dadhad the greatest of care. You are all very special

people who offer the greatest gift of all.”
