A group of friends went on holiday to the South of France. The weather was good, so the friends decided to rent a car and spend the day on the beach. Jonathan kept the car keys in his pocket. Hours passed and Jonathan forgot he had the car keys in his pocket. He went swimming, played beach volleyball and sunbathed.

It was getting dark so the friends decided to go home. Jonathan went to unlock the car door but he had lost the keys!

Swimming in the sea was a boy wearing a snorkel and a mask. Jonathan asked the boy to help him find his keys. The boy dived deep down to the bottom of the sea. A few seconds later the boy appeared holding Jonathan's car keys.

A. Right B. Wrong C. Doesn't say

DOGS ESCAPE FROM RESCUE CENTRE The mystery of the unlocked cages at a rescue centre for dogs had the staff

scratching their heads as much as the dogs scratch themselves. Just how were up to nine dogs at a time getting out of their locked cages at night

and helping themselves to food and treats from the kitchen? Some of the staff even wondered if they had a .ghost living at the rescue centre

who was letting the dogs out. To solve the mystery they placed a camera in the building to see what went on at night. An hour after the staff had left, a friendly, wily dog of mainly greyhound descent named Red, was caught on camera opening his cage, then going to the other dogs' cages and opening them.

Red was a very clever dog, after watching the staff unlock and open his cage each deJy to take him for walks and to feed him, he soon worked out how to open it himself. It wasn't long before Red was able to open the cages of his 'friends' so that each night they could all feast and play together while the staff were at home fast asleep!

A Right B Wrong

Answer: 0 I • D D I Example: 0 There are many branches of Madame Tussauds

A Right B Wrong C Doesn't say

Madame Tussauds is a famous wax museum in London with branches in a number of major cities. It has a lot of famous people made from wax. Wax is a solid substance that becomes soft when warm and melts easily. It comes from bees and is often used to make candles. Many people visit wax museums because the sculptures look like they are real.

A visit to Madame Tussauds wouldn't be complete without meeting the Royal Family. Dating back over ten centuries, the Monarchy has played an important role in the UK, but rather than reading all about it in a dusty history book you'll meet history's royalties face to face at Madame Tussauds! You can plant a kiss on Prince William's cheek, or shake Prince Charles's hand. Of course the late Queen Mother and Diana, Princess of Wales are here too looking as beautiful as ever.

Finally, travel back in time to the Tudor times. Ever heard of Henry VIII? He ruled England in the sixteenth century and is mostly known for his six wives and for declaring himself head of the new Church of England.

22. We can use the sun's energy for electricity. A Right B Wrong C Doesn't say

21. Coal and oil are the best sources of energy. A Right B Wrong C Doesn't say

Answer: I 0 I • D D I Example: 0 Lights and computers use energy.

A. Right B. Wrong C. Doesn't say

We always have to be careful of the environment when we get our energy. For example. we shouldn't put wind machines where we know lots of birds will be flying, because they might fly into the machines. But if we choose the right kind of energy in the right place. we will have good, clean energy for the future.

The best sources of energy don't hurt the environment and won't run out. In places where it is often sunny, we can use energy from the sun. We can also use water power from rivers and from waves in the sea. In windy places we can use wind power. These sources of energy don't cause pollution.

Good sources of energy People need energy so we can turn on our lights. use our computers. cook our food, and lots more. Some ways of getting the energy we need for our electrici ty are better than others. There isn't enough coal and oil to last us forever, and taking them out of the ground is bad for the environment.

Read the article about energy. Are sentences 21 ~27 'Right' (A) or 'Wrong' (B)? If there is not enough information to answer 'Right' (A) or 'Wrong' (B), choose 'Doesn't say' (C). For questions 21 ~27, mark A, B or C.

TEST 1This is the Cambridge Preliminary English Test. There are four parts to the test. You will hear each part twice. For eachpart of the test there will be time for you to look through the questions and time for you to check your answers. Write youranswers on the question paper. You will have six minutes at the end of the test to copy your answers onto the answer sheet. The recording will now be stopped. Please ask any questions now, because you must not speak during the test.[Pause 5 seconds.]

Part 1There are seven questions in this part. For each question there are three pictures and a short recording. Choose the cor-rect picture and put a tick in the box below it. Before we start, here is an example.Example: Where did the woman leave her hat?W: Oh no! What have I done with my hat?M: You didn’t have it in the cafe.W: But I meant to wear it because I remember taking it out of the car with my bag.M: Yes, I saw you put your things on the roof of the car.W: Oh no! I know where it still is then![Pause 5 seconds.]The second picture is correct so there is a tick in box B. Look at the three pictures for question 1 now.[Pause 5 seconds.] Now we are ready to start. Listen carefully. You will hear each recording twice.

1. How did the woman travel?M: I’m surprised that you drove all the way to Liverpool.F: Well, actually I decided it would be better not to take the car in the end.M: Oh really! What made you change your mind?F: The train doesn’t get stuck in traffic jams and I didn’t want to be late to meet my sister when she arrived at the harbour.[Pause 5 seconds.] Now listen again. [Repeat the recording.] [Pause 5 seconds.]

2. What time does the film start?M: What time shall I come to your house?F: Six o’clock, so that we don’t have to hurry.M: That gives us a whole hour until the film starts, and it only takes ten minutes to walk to the cinema.F: I know, but I thought we could go for a coffee first.[Pause 5 seconds.] Now listen again. [Repeat the recording.] [Pause 5 seconds.]

3. What does the man eat?F: Are you ready to order your meal, Sir?M: Yes. I’d like steak and chips please.F: I’m very sorry Sir, but we’ve run out of steak.M: Oh, that’s a shame.F: The chicken is very good today and so is the fish.M: Okay I’ll have chicken and chips... Oh, actually, I’m on a diet so I’d better have salad instead of the chips.[Pause 5 seconds.] Now listen again. [Repeat the recording.] [Pause 5 seconds.]

4. Which book is Jackie reading?M: Are you still reading that history book Jackie?F: Actually I’m just reading something for fun.M: That’s unusual for you. You always seem to be studying these days.F: Exactly, that’s why I thought a bit of poetry might help me to relax.[Pause 5 seconds.] Now listen again. [Repeat the recording.] [Pause 5 seconds.]

5. Where did the man leave his keys?M: Have you seen my keys?F: Aren’t they on the table?M: No, I looked there.F: How about in your coat pocket?M: Oh yes, they are probably there... Oh! No they aren’t.F: Well what is that in your hand?M: Oops, silly me![Pause 5 seconds.] Now listen again. [Repeat the recording.] [Pause 5 seconds.]

6. Which present did Mark buy?M: I wanted to buy Jane a blouse but I’m not sure what size she is.F: How about buying her a nice scarf?M: Do you think she’d rather have that than a pair of gloves?F: I think so.M: Oh okay then.[Pause 5 seconds.] Now listen again. [Repeat the recording.] [Pause 5 seconds.]

7. What will the weather be like tomorrow?W: And now the weather. After a rainy start today, it will get brighter in the afternoon although it may be a little windy. However, this will

blow away the cloud during the night so most of us will wake up to warm sunshine.[Pause 5 seconds.] Now listen again. [Repeat the recording.] [Pause 5 seconds.]

That is the end of part 1. [Pause 10 seconds.]

Now turn to part 2, questions 8-13.You will hear a doctor talking about how people can live a healthier life. For each question, put a tick in the correct box.You now have 45 seconds to look at the questions for Part 2. [Pause 45 seconds.] Now we are ready to start. Listen carefully. You will hear the recording twice.

F: Most people seem to think that in order to become healthier, we need to go to the gym every day and eat hardly anything. This, however, is really not the way to go about changing your unhealthy habits. Just a few, basic changes to our daily routinecan improve our health dramatically. If you are the kind of person who keeps trying to exercise regularly but keeps failing, it’s time to think again about your attitude. It’simportant not to focus on your failures, but instead be positive about your successes. Instead of being unhappy because you didn’t goto the gym five times last week, be proud of the fact that at least you went twice. One good reason to eat healthily is that it could improve your mood. A recent survey has found that 80 per cent of people felt betterwhen they changed what they ate or drank. A quarter of them said their bad moods and stress disappeared. The greatest benefit wasfelt after drinking more water, eating more vegetables, reducing sugar and cutting down on coffee.Another way of improving your mood and reducing stress is to take care when you do things. If you start something, make sure youfinish it - even if it is a minor task. Doing so can make you feel happier. When you get close to achieving something, your brain sendsout reward signals that make you feel positive. Finally you should make sure that you get plenty of sleep. Don’t have too many late nights, although an occasional one won’t do youany harm. Without sleep, the brain can’t work properly and you’ll get depressed. So look after your body and your body will look after you.

[Pause 5 seconds.] Now listen again. [Repeat the recording.] [Pause 5 seconds.]

That is the end of part 2. [Pause 10 seconds.]

Now turn to part 3, questions 14-19.You will hear a tour guide giving information about an old British house. For each question, fill in the missing informationin the numbered space. You now have 20 seconds to look at Part 3. [Pause 20 seconds.] Now we are ready to start. Listencarefully. You will hear the recording twice.

M: Good morning everyone and welcome to Stonebridge House. My name is David and I’m your tour guide. This morning I’m going toshow you around this wonderful 19th century house which was the home of the Reynold family for more than 150 years, until 1975when it became a national museum. We are now standing in the main lobby of the house where you can see the magnificent wooden staircase that leads up to thebedrooms. The servants used to sleep in the attic but they would have used a different staircase to this one.Now if we go through to the dining room you will be able to see a fine collection of paintings. George Reynold was a big fan oftraditional art as we can see here today. George came from a military family. Surprisingly, however, he became a lawyer, even thoughhis father had wanted him to be an officer in the army. His younger brother also rebelled and became a teacher. Now the Reynold family is famous for many things but probably most of all for the many family tragedies. The family has had morethan its fair share of early deaths. George’s son Michael died from cancer, his wife died while giving birth to their daughter Emily andGeorge’s brother had a fatal horse riding accident. George himself always suffered from a weak heart and he died of a heart attackat the age of 52.

[Pause 5 seconds.] Now listen again. [Repeat the recording.] [Pause 5 seconds.]

That is the end of part 3. [Pause 10 seconds.]

Now turn to part 4, questions 20-25.Look at the six sentences for this part. You will hear a conversation between a boy, Simon, and a girl, Tina, about someproblems Tina is having at school. Decide if each sentence is correct or incorrect. If it is correct, put a tick in the boxunder A for YES. If it is not correct, put a tick in the box under B for NO. You now have 20 seconds to look at the ques-tions for Part 4. [Pause 20 seconds.] Now we are ready to start. Listen carefully. You will hear the recording twice.

M: What’s wrong, Tina? You’ve been looking worried all morning.F: Oh, everything’s going wrong at the moment, Simon.M: Oh come on, it can’t be that bad. You know what they say; “a problem shared is a problem halved”.F: Well, you must have noticed how all the teachers pick on me. I mean, they tell me off more than any other student in the class.M: Yes, that’s true, but they have good reason to, don’t they?F: No, they don’t! I never behave badly in class.M: Yes, but you never do your homework either, do you? And you never listen to what the teachers are saying.F: It’s not that I’m not listening exactly. It’s just that I’m so tired all the time.M: You should go to the doctor, Tina. There must be something wrong with you if you are so tired.F: No, I’m fine. I think it’s just that I go to bed very late.M: What time do you go to bed then?F: Not till about two o’clock usually because I like watching the late-night films on TV.

Question 7 - Model Answer This is an example of a very good answer.

Hi Nicky!

How are you? I’m in great form and I’d be delighted to tell you allabout where I live.

First of all, as you probably remember, my town’s called Melvin.Melvin is a small, country town. It’s quiet here and there’s not muchtraffic on the roads. There is a really nice park in the town centreand that’s where my friends and I spend a lot of our free time. Wego cycling in the park, play football, play catch and have picnicsthere, too – mostly at the weekend. In the evenings, after school,we usually meet up at the café for a chat.

Write back soon!Ray

Question 8 - Model Answer This is an example of a very good answer.

Up, up and away!I was worried about the journey. I had never been on a planebefore, you see. I was sitting in my seat holding the armrestsas tightly as I possibly could. We were about to take off. Iclosed my eyes and hoped for the best.

A minute later, I looked out the window and realised I’d doneit. Take-off was over and I was on my very first flight. ‘Notso bad’, I thought, closing my eyes again.

But the next time my eyes opened, I wasn’t on a plane but inmy own comfy bed. ‘Oh no!’, I thought. ’Now I’ve got to do itall over again!’

Hi Anne!

Thank you so much for the handbag. I really like itbecause now I have something nice to carry mymake-up around in. My brother, Simon, bought me alovely pearl necklace, too. Aren’t I lucky?!

All my love,Jody

Question 6 - Example Answer

Question 8 - Example Answer

Mark 4: All three points are adequately dealt with. In spite of minor errors ("the so nice birthday present","CD you did for me"), the message is clearly communicated with little effort on the part of the reader.

Question 7 - Example Answer

Hi Michael,

Thank for the letter. I answer you about my area. It is quite area withsome green trees and a park where I can play with my friends. I like it.The only bad is to go to school on the bus - it take an hour!

With my friends we like to play in the park football or we like to justsit and talk about our problems together. We help one and the otherwith the problems or we laugh together.

How do you like to spend the time with your friends?Bye,

Mark 3: This is an adequate attempt. While there are only a few non-impeding errors ("Thank for theletter" "It is quiet area" "the only bad is" "it take"), the language, structure and vocabulary is ratherunambitious for the level. Some effort is required of the reader.

Mark 4: This is a good attempt at the task. The language is sometimes ambitious ("...and swim but it will be ajourney of five hours") and a good range of structures are used although there are sometimes mistakes in simpleconstructions ("a child is misbehaves it will ", " that it take ", "...to listen.") or tense ("we are very tired", "I bring").Overall, however, little effort is required for the reader to understand the meaning.

Hi Jo,

I’m writing thank you for the so nice birthdaypresent! The CD you did for me I like it so much!It is all my favourite songs. Also I got a newphone from my parents!

Thank you again,Lawrence

The big, long bus journey!I was worried about the journey. We go by bus the wholeclass altogether to the mountains. We go to a very beau-tiful place with a lake where we can do water sports andswim but it will be a journey of five hours. It will be soboring! It is a long time in the bus and we can sit downwith our friends but if a child is misbehaves it will stopthe bus. I was worried that it take seven hours and notfive and we are very tired. I bring a book to read and mymp3 player to listen.

Dear Paul,

Write back soon,Joey

Hi Melvin!

It was great to hear from you! I’d love to tell you about Greece.

One of the most popular destinations in Greece is probably San-torini. Santorini is a beautiful volcanic island that’s famous for itsamazing sunsets.

There’s lots to do on Santorini; you can go to the beach to sun-bathe, swim and play beach sports. There are lovely shops there, too, where you can buy nice jewellery and gifts. The problem is theshops are a bit expensive. Young people like Santorini because ofthe beaches and the great nightlife. Santorini has lots of places toparty!

Send my love to everyone,Alice

My first job interview!I took a deep breath and knocked on the door. I was so nervous –it was my first job interview. The door opened and a young womanwith a big smile on her face shook my hand as I entered the room. She took me to my seat in front of three other interviewers. Ifelt more relaxed now; everyone was smiling.

Then, in walked a tall woman and the room went silent. She wasn’tsmiling. ‘The boss’, I thought. She sat down with the others andthe interview began. I took another deep breath …

One hour and twenty five of the hardest minutes of my life later,I had my first job!

Question 6 - Example Answer

Question 8 - Example Answer

Mark 3: Two of the content points are clearly communicated, and very little effort is required of the reader, however the third point is omitted, preventing a higher score from being awarded.

Question 7 - Example Answer

Band 2: The limited range of structures and vocabulary does not allow the task to be adequately achieved. It is shorter than the word requirement, which limits the mark that may be awarded. Also, there are imped-ing errors in vocabulary ("patients", "myselves"), punctuation use is erratic ( "... important museums the mu-seums") and there is noticeable repetition ("...place...", "...important...", "...enjoy...").

Mark 5: The writing achieves the desired effect on the target reader. Coherence and organisation of thetext is very strong. The structures and vocabulary used are ambitious for the level, and while there are a fewminor non-impeding errors, no effort is required of the reader.

Hi Amy,

Why don't you come and stay with me for a week this summer?I live outside the city, near the sea, so is easy to go and swimand we do this with my family every day. It will be fun!

Love,

Dear pen friend,

The most important of the places for the tourists tosee in my place is the very important museums themuseums are big and important and there are verymany of them around if you can have patients andwait for them in line. I go to see them in the sum-mertime and I enjoy them myselves. Also to see arethe cafes and restaurants to go and to sit and enjoyin the summertime.

Give it Back!I took a deep breath and knocked on the door. But I knocked only

very quietly and no person came. I felt nervous an my stomachhurt. My mother made me to do this because it is the house of abad boy at school who had taken my maths book. I think his was

lost.

My mother wanted me to ask for my book back, and to ask to hisparents too. Because my name was in my book everyone could see.My mother was waiting in the car and watching but she wantedthat I do it myself.

I breathed once more and knocked again. The mother came and shebrought to me my book. The boy was embarrassed. So in the end, itwas good.
