Heavy-Duty Features And BenefitsEvery Challenge. Met.n System Integration – Cummins is the only engine manufacturer to design and develop, manufacture and support every component from the air intake to the exhaust aftertreatment in a totally integrated system. n Cummins is able to optimize critical systems to deliver the right technology to our customers in a way that other engine manufacturers using outside suppliers can’t match.n XPI Fuel System – Cummins is the only North American manufacturer with the in-house capability to design and develop this critical element. The XPI fuel system is capable of the highest injection pressures in the industry consistent at every rpm for stronger performance with multiple injection events for cleaner, quieter and more complete combustion.n Single Overhead Cam – Our improved XPI fuel system eliminates the need for a second camshaft. This provides weight savings and simplifies operation.n VGTTM Turbocharger – Custom-built by Cummins Turbo Technologies; this proven technology has set the industry standard for precision performance, dependability and durability since 2002.n Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) – A key factor in generating higher horsepower while also saving fuel is the use of proprietary SCR technology, which allows Cummins to lower the amount of cooled EGR in the power cylinder and recalibrate the engine for more efficient combustion and increased fuel economy. • In 2010, the proven Cummins Particulate Filter, which reduces particulate matter by over 90% is combined with Cummins Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) to meet emissions standards while maintaining best-in-class performance, reliability and durability. Cummins SCR technology has been proven in over 350,000

European vehicles and uses Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) to achieve NOx emissions at near-zero levels. DEF is readily available; reference Cummins Filtration flyer LT15618 for more information.

Lower Operating Costs.

ISX15n Fuel Economy – The ISX15 integrated engine package delivers up to 6% better fuel economy (versus EPA 2007 ISX).n Larger Sweet Spot – Fleets with less experienced drivers will see even bigger fuel economy gains from the three-times larger ‘sweet spot’ with the ISX15.n Less Regenerations – The fully integrated technology of the ISX15 requires fewer regeneration events (none at all for over-the-road truckers).n Big Bore ISX15 will deliver a higher resale value at trade-in than smaller displacement engines.

ISX11.9n Compact Design – The ISX11.9 packs a lot of advanced features into a compact design. It fits the same packaging footprint as the ISM, keeping installation modifications to a minimum. Most major components are shared with the ISX15, the industry leader for reliability and fuel efficiency.

ISX15 And ISX11.9n Maintenance Intervals – Maintenance intervals and costs remain virtually unchanged for the ISX15 and ISX11.9 with the only additional items being a cleaning of the hydrocarbon doser injector every 150,000 miles (240,000 km) and replacement of the DEF filter at 200,000-mile (320,000 km) intervals.

SmartTorque – Putting Technology In High GearSmartTorque technology is a torque enhancement system that gives fleets and owner/operators massive hill-pulling torque. And, at the same time, delivers up to 3% savings on fuel costs. Here’s how it works:

The electronic control module monitors engine speed, load and gear position. When the driver shifts into the top two gears, SmartTorque automatically “kicks it up,” unleashing as much as 200 extra lb-ft of torque.

Though SmartTorque increases power significantly, that’s not a consideration when spec’ing the transmission. For example, if SmartTorque boosts engine torque to 1850 lb-ft, the transmission can be spec’d for a lower torque rating. Saving both the weight and expense of a beefier transmission. Yet with SmartTorque’s extra power, drivers get up steeper hills with fewer downshifts, saving fuel, decreasing trip times and reducing driver fatigue. So destinations are reached more economically, faster and safer.

8

Load-Based Speed ControlCummins Load-Based Speed Control (LBSC) is a patented electronic feature on ISX15 and ISX11.9 engines that helps drivers achieve higher fuel economy without compromising performance.

This Cummins exclusive feature automatically adjusts the engine operating range to match the load on board and the route.

It optimizes engine rpm during normal driving conditions by governing the engine speed to encourage shifting in the most fuel-efficient ranges. At the same time, it continuously monitors vehicle operating conditions and allows access to an extended engine operating range every time it senses the need. For example:

n On a grade exceeding 2%n During sharp turns when tire scrub may occurn When carrying a load in excess of 80,000 lb

LBSC also does not limit engine speed during gear changes or when operating in the top two gears.

Load-Based Speed Control lowers the average engine revs/mile (kilometer). This has many benefits:

n Improved fuel economyn Reduced parasitic losses due to cycling of

engine accessories (such as the fan)n Lower engine noise in parking lots and

residential areasn Improved engine durability

Medium-Duty Features And Benefitsn Improved Base Engine – Very few changes have been made to the ISL9 base engine for EPA 2010. You can expect the same high level of performance, reliability and dependability that you currently get from Cummins Medium-Duty engines.

n Better Fuel Economy – The combination of SCR and XPI fuel injection and the total integration of all elements controlled under a single system results in up to 3% better fuel economy for the ISL9 (versus EPA 2007 ISL).

n Every System. Integrated. – Cummins designs and develops, manufactures and supports nearly every component from the air intake to the exhaust aftertreatment in a totally integrated system. Cummins is able to optimize critical systems to deliver the right technology to our customers in a way that other engine manufacturers using outside suppliers can’t match.

• Cummins Aftertreatment System – The Cummins Aftertreatment System combines the Cummins Particulate Filter with proven Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology and has been fully integrated with the engine to deliver near-zero emissions. Adding SCR does more than clean up the exhaust. It enables us to lower cooled-EGR levels and recalibrate the engine for stronger performance and better fuel efficiency.

Page 22: Better Every Time. - Cumminskenworth.cummins.com/cloud/cummins-circuit/uploads/public/english... · (versus EPA 2007 ISX). n Larger Sweet Spot – Fleets with less experienced drivers

18

– Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is sprayed at a rate of approximately 2-3% of fuel consumption and will need to be refilled periodically. Simply check the DEF gauge on your dashboard at each refueling.

• XPI Fuel System – The ISL9 features the XPI fuel system. Cummins is the only North American manufacturer with the in-house capability to design and develop this critical element. The XPI fuel system is capable of the highest injection pressures in the industry, consistent at every rpm for stronger performance with multiple injection events for cleaner, quieter and more complete combustion.

• VGTTM Turbocharger – Custom-built by Cummins Turbo Technologies; this proven technology has set the industry standard for precision performance, dependability and durability since 2002.

• Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) – Cummins Medium-Duty engines also include a next-generation EGR cooler designed for better flow control.

• Electronic Control Module – The same Electronic Control Module (ECM) and engine software is featured on all Cummins on-highway diesel engines and has been enhanced in 2010 with more precise control for better combustion.

Page 23: Better Every Time. - Cumminskenworth.cummins.com/cloud/cummins-circuit/uploads/public/english... · (versus EPA 2007 ISX). n Larger Sweet Spot – Fleets with less experienced drivers

19

n Maintenance Intervals – Maintenance intervals and costs remain virtually unchanged for the Medium-Duty engines. The only additional item is the replacement of the DEF Filter every 200,000 miles (320,000 km).

n Largest Service Network – Cummins Service Network is the largest in North America with over 3,500 locations.

CUMPASCummins provides CUMPAS (Cummins Parts and Service) to parts dealers in North America. This electronic tool enhances a dealer’s ability to work with the Cummins distributor network.

Using the Internet, CUMPAS links the dealer to the Cummins distributor responsible for the territory where the dealer is located. CUMPAS saves time and greatly reduces the need for the dealer to call or fax the distributor. All the dealer needs is a computer and access to the Internet.

Cummins dealers benefit by using CUMPAS to tie electronically into the distributor’s Business Management System. The dealer can inquire about part pricing, availability, supercession, order status, invoice detail and back orders. CUMPAS facilitates stock orders as well as branch, emergency and warranty orders. It also enables order downloading from the dealer’s own business system. In addition to Parts Ordering and its many features, CUMPAS provides Core Processing and Management Reports, including the latest, Price File Extract. The CUMPAS link to QuickServe® Online makes it easy to look up part numbers in an online catalog and transfer them to CUMPAS via an electronic shopping cart.

To sign up for CUMPAS, dealers simply need to contact their Cummins distributor and request access. The distributor provides the registration and authentication, as well as account information for online access. CUMPAS provides training tutorials online as well, so dealer personnel receive training at their convenience and do not have to take time to attend a course at the distributorship.

Cummins Virtual CollegeCummins Virtual College is an interactive multimedia self-study learning system that uses CD technology. The training is targeted to technicians but other learning “paths” are available for parts personnel on Cummins latest products.

This training program reduces training cost by:

n Minimizing the time away from revenue-producing work

n Allowing multiple personnel to be trained on one investment

n Reducing overnight lodging costs associated with classroom training

When used as a prerequisite, Cummins Virtual College programs can also improve the level of knowledge obtained during classroom or hands-on training sessions.

Cummins Virtual College also increases learning effectiveness through consistent delivery of material, availability without the need for Internet connectivity, self-paced study to allow for different rates of learning, and course completion recording to reduce redundancy on future training programs. Training can be delivered concurrently with the arrival of new products, and a review feature allows personnel to refresh their knowledge as needed. This interactive course contains high-quality video and animation, so it is highly effective at reaching visual as well as book learners.

A hotline is available if questions arise regarding course content or how to use the program. Hands-on classroom training for the latest products is also available at most Cummins distributors.

For more details, contact your local Cummins distributor training center or call 1-800-DIESELSTM (1-800-343-7357) Customer Assistance Center.

Vehicle Mission Simulation™ (VMS)Vehicle Mission Simulation (VMS) is a program developed by Cummins that evaluates the performance of various engines and power train configurations. VMS is ideally suited for comparing different vehicle specifications for new equipment and predicting performance for those specifications so the customer can make the best decision for their new equipment.

The program features the prediction of steady-state performance and route simulation capability, including starts, stops, gear changes, observance of speed limits, ascending and descending grades, braking and idling.

While the program has been designed to reflect an accurate representation of the vehicle being configured, it does not represent a guarantee of actual performance, as conditions may vary.

Contact your local Cummins distributor if you need a detailed analysis performed with VMS.
