Education Report

As we are approaching the end of term three the focus for the Vocational Education Students has been the completion of mandatory workplace hours in their chosen frameworks. Over the past few weeks students in Hospitality, Metals and Engineering, Construction and Sports Coaching have all worked in businesses to gain the necessary hands on workplace experiences to enhance their learning and improve completion of required Australian competencies. Primary Industries students in the preliminary course will also complete work placement early next term. We are very lucky as a school in this community that there are so many employers who give us their full support in these learning partnerships. The trade training centre building is now finished and both Hospitality and Metals and Engineering students are benefiting from the industrial equipment that is being used to provide CERT 11 and 111 competencies in both of these frameworks. I have included a couple of photographs of these new facilities at the completion of the report. The official opening of the Trade Training Centre has not been decided as both Lithgow and Portland High Schools will be part of this event but we plan to have a school opening and invite all industry representatives later on next term.

Tournament of Minds

On Sunday 28th August, thirteen talented students participated in the Regional Tournament of Minds Challenge at Orange High School. Students had been preparing for the tournament for five weeks prior the event, and performed remarkably on the day.

Students participating in the Applied Technology Challenge were Jessie Foley, Claire Sullivan, Jackson Foley, Hannah Bourchier, Angela Massey, Joseph Kingi, Lucy Voerman. This challenge required students to make a four minute film made up of a series of “still shots” which depicted a journey. The students then had to show the ending of their journey in a ten minute performance. Our team chose to explore the metaphorical journey of life. Judges commented on the team’s creativity and excellent use of technology. The costumes made were also outstanding with many cast members appearing to be in their eighties!

Our other team participated in the Language Literature Challenge. Shelby Russo-Vooles, Tomas McKinnon, Megan Gearon, Laurie Bailey, Olivia Robinson and Caitlin Foley performed admirably in this challenge. This challenge required students to create a three minute trailer for the film “Cool Runnings”. The students then had to sell their trailer to a committee of judges in a ten minute play. Shelby and the rest of the team kept remarkably calm when the technology did not work and the team improvised part of their performance. Again this team was praised for their work on developing costumes and props which bought a “Jamaican” feel to their performance.

Both teams of students also faced an unseen spontaneous challenge on the day of the Tournament. All students were pleased with their performance in this arena.

All team members are to be congratulated on the creativity of their ideas, their willingness to give up their weekend to rehearse and compete, and the overall quality of their performance. Most importantly however, each student’s commitment to their peers and their ability to work together as a team has been outstanding.

It is also important to acknowledge the parents of our team members and thank them for their support of their children and the school. In particular special mention must be made to Mrs Gearon, Mrs Bourchier, Mr and Mrs Voerman, Ronny Maere, Mrs Foley and Mrs Massey for coming to Orange on the Sunday and supporting our teams.

We look forward to Oberon High students participating in Tournament of Minds again in 2012.

Mitchell Conservatorium Scholarships

On Saturday the 27th of August two of our Year 8 students auditioned for scholarships at the Mitchell Conservatorium in Bathurst. Darcie Behan and Keely Armstrong both sang two songs and the judges commented on the quality of both girls’ performance.

Both girls are to be heartily congratulated on receiving the title of “Runner Up” for the scholarship

awards. We look forward to hearing their wonderful voices in the near future at school.
