2016 has begun, and my to-do list is well underway. I’m making the most of Dubai Shopping Festival by heading out for scented candles and key items at discounted prices. Not sure what to look for? Read through our shopping section (page 15-20), or have a look at the trending rooms (from page 22) and undergo a complete renovation instead – there’s no better time to go about this, than the first month of the year.

A coat of paint can have a great impact on a room, and lucky for you, our expert selection of the 2016 colour tones (page 35) will ensure you are on trend for the year ahead. Audio enthusiasts can take note from our How-to guide (page 34) and fit out their own sound system too. We also have your culinary needs covered, with grill recipes, tips from top chefs, and cheese pairings to try this season – on page 50 and 51.

The January issue comprises homes by the waterside, whether in a gated villa-community like Jumeirah Islands – take a look at our featured home on page 28 – or in JBR and Dubai Marina, to name a few communities. 2016 may be the year you move into a new home, so you might want to search through our selection from page 52 and enjoy the hunting process.

Wish you a successful year ahead.

David tells us that everything he does is colour coordinated, and this is reflected in the living room which is fairly minimalist, not heavily accessorised, and light and airy. The beige and blue theme, which sort of portrays his love for the sea in the interiors, showcases customised couches from Everest upholstery on Sheikh Zayed Road, as well as drapes that were specifically lined with two layers to match the seating. “I highly recommend the company, as they sized and produced everything according to our design expectations. The rug from the gold souq in Dubai was a bit of a hunt, although it matches the space perfectly, tying everything together.”

aspect of it – it’s safe to say that interiors can slightly lean towards a woman’s territory. Not for David Page, though. The semi-retired gentleman who previously owned a construction and infrastructure project company, obviously has a fondness for design – as it was interlinked with his field – but that’s not all he’s keen on. “My life is one with lots of things going on, so I never, ever get bored. I love home life,” he enthuses. David has just begun learning golf, and spends his time painting, cooking, and modeling objects, when he isn’t in his study.

The Jumeirah Islands Mansions villa that David and his wife, Gill, live in is an upgraded four-bedroom home overlooking the serene lake and wildlife. “The location is lovely, very convenient, and quiet, and the lake gives you privacy, but you get a glimpse of the wildlife too with the birds,” he tells us. David purchased the house three years ago, but has always liked the community – having lived at another villa in the vicinity before. “There is a very good clubhouse, where you can head to the gym, make friends, or try sports activities. The restaurant in there boasts very sensible prices, too,” says David.

As I admire a picture of Santorini (taken by David) in the living room, he goes on to proclaim his love for photography, as well as sailing and cars. His passion for sailing is noticeable in the large model galleon ‘Black Rose’, which adorns the wall near the dining table, and the two smaller ones upstairs, which were made in Vietnam.

Our chat about the villa gives us a glimpse of what it may have looked like before; with David telling us he stripped everything. “We added a new kitchen scheme, and stripped the water feature previously installed in the garden to add a bar. One of the bedrooms upstairs was transformed into a movie room, and the guest room changed to a study,” he

tells us. Carpenters were hired, along with electric engineers for the movie room, however, the entire design was conceputalised by David himself. JBL speakers, the latest 4K Atmos sound system from Denon, and a projector from Sony were added in to make it as modern, and high-tech as possible. The room is fairly new, having been completed around six weeks ago. The bar, which is actually a Hacker kitchen, had the mechanisms altered so that the

How-to: Install a sound system

Nifty DIY ideas to put your domest ic sk i l ls to the test

Consider the s izeIf you have a big room, you can opt for a 7.1 channel surround system with wireless subwoofers. there will be wires running between the seven speakers to the amplifier, so be sure to install concealing wire lining to ensure it doesn’t upset the balance of the interiors.

Wired or wire lessIn case you don’t want the hassle of wires, a convenient option would be a powerful soundbar with wireless subwoofers. you won’t have to worry about several wires slithering across your room, and disrupting your interiors. moreover, soundbars come with a surround sound algorithm, which basically gives you an encircling sound

feel, even without having speakers around you.

The heightIt is important to set the elevation of your speakers correctly. the front facing speakers must always be at ear level. you can calibrate the heights of the rear speakers to match your height at a standing position. that way, you won’t have it directly fire into your ears.

Perfect p lacement and posi t ioning technically, subwoofers can be placed anywhere, but the closer it is to a wall, the better the bass – which may sound

different in various positions. It is ideal to calibrate based on the requirement of the user. Point your front and rear left and right speakers to the centre of your sitting area, as this way you’ll get a rounded, clear sound.

The ul t imate set-updepending on the experience you prefer, choose a system that caters to your taste. Be it surround, immersive, mono, it’s all up to what you want. there are also Wi-fi based speaker systems, which can be added on to a soundbar to give you a genuine home cinema effect.

The Jotun Soft Grey (394) offers a refreshing take on the colour. “Simplicity is key when you design using Soft grey; and light wooden furniture, ceramics and accessories are all design elements that work very well in a space featuring this shade,” says rana Khadra, regional Brand Manager of interior decorative Paints at Jotun Middle east, india and Africa. When combined with off-white and cream tones, it makes the walls look enriched as well.

The Caparol Metallocryl and Arte Lasur enhance a wall, with paint strokes that provide a dimensional effect, almost making it a statement in itself. The paints from the Capadecor collection work great for the entrance or lounge area wall, offering a striking balance to furniture pieces. in addition, the gold element of the Metallocryl fits well with Arabesque-style homes, injecting bits of the glam surroundings into the space. Arte Lasur is similar to Peach echo, from the Pantone 2016 colour report, and evokes warmth when used at home.

Deborah Berke’s inspiration for the 432 Park Avenue building, co-developed by CIM Group and Macklowe

Properties, was the architect Rafael Violy, and judging by the outcome, her source was definitely the best to glean creativeness and inspiration from. An unrivaled panoramic view over Central Park, the Hudson and East Rivers, and Atlantic Ocean, is the highlight of this home, and with huge 10x10 feet windows to gaze out from, Deborah knew she had to focus the design around the breathtaking vistas.

“The building’s geometry flows through in the clean, contemporary interiors which reflect the classical exterior design,” says Deborah. The three-bedroom apartment with library showcases a timeless, neutral colour scheme, so that residents can display their fine art collection and furnishings. “Handpicked furniture adorns the space, with a mixture of classic Elizabeth Eakins silk rugs, a gold leaf Yves Klein coffee table, a hand-poured, sculpted

glass chandelier by John Pomp, and other custom-designed furnishings,” she says. The apartment is a marriage of art and design, capturing an environment that is inspiring and beautiful.

The kitchen is a work of art in itself too, equipped with stainless steel Miele appliances, and a windowed eat-in kitchen with marble breakfast bar. The master bedroom features statuary book-matched marble floors and walls, a freestanding soaking tub, and a 1,200-pound solid cubic Bianco Sivec marble countertop in the en-suite master bathroom. All bath fittings are from Dornbracht.

The carefully designed space boasts expansive layouts, high ceilings, and state-of-the-art appliances. The tower which houses the apartment boasts amenities to suit the lifestyle and needs of the residents, being on par with five-star luxury hotels. These include a private dining room, swimming pool, spa, conference venue, billiards room, screening, and performance venue.

Overall, the home doesn’t look over-the-top opulent, yet boasts a luxurious element with minimalist interiors that fit seamlessly with the tower’s facade.

Move to

juMeirah beach residence“residents are extremely spoi l t for choice with the beach on the one s ide, and ever ything Dubai Mar ina has to of fer on the other s ide,” says Shel ley Kruger, resident ia l Consultant at Better Homes jBr .

Jumeirah Beach Residence (also known as JBR) is a waterfront community located alongside the Arabian Gulf in Dubai. The residential and hotel development comprises six blocks –Shams, Amwaj, Rimal, Bahar, Sadaf and Murjan – and five hotels. Residents are extremely spoilt for choice with the beach on one side and everything Dubai Marina has to offer on the other. Dubai Marina Mall, Yacht Club and all the surrounding areas are easy to access as the tram runs through the heart of the Marina. There are connecting stations to the Dubai Metro as well, making transportation as convenient as possible.

The Walk, which JBR is famed for, offers a wide range of services and venues, from a number of world-renowned brands strewn across the stretch, to many franchised and local venues, including restaurants, clothing stores, boutiques, department stores and cafés. It is located over two levels - ground and plaza. The vibrant lifestyle at JBR is popular with both residents and holidaymakers alike, as there is constantly something new and exciting taking place, whether live entertainment, the buzz at the eateries, water sports at the beach, outdoor markets, or pop-up stores, just to name a few. Schools are within driving distance and many offer a shuttle service to and from the Marina and JBR.

Each residential block has several towers and offer apartments from 900-square feet studios to 5,500-square feet penthouses. JBR can accommodate about 15,000 people in apartments and hotel rooms. The project has around 7,000 apartments, and recreational facilities including community swimming pools with lifeguards, nurseries, health clubs, beauty parlours, pharmacies, supermarkets and playgrounds. Currently, the leasing rate for a studio is Dhs90,000, whereas a one-bedroom apartment is approximately Dhs120,000.

Two-bedroom apartments are available for Dhs150,000, while a three-bedroom starts from Dhs180,000. JBR apartments offer good rental returns and the average yield in the vicinity of 7%. A studio with a view is available from Dhs1.2 million to buy, while a one bedroom apartment is Dhs1.5 million. Two and three-bedroom apartments are available from Dh2.5 to Dhs4 million, depending on the views. Full sea-facing apartments attract a higher price than community facing units, but Marina views are highly sought after and attract good prices.

What sets your school apar t f rom others in the c i ty?I think that NAS Dubai is set apart, really, by three things. We are selective based on academic ability and behaviour. That theme continues in the school, where I believe behaviour and social graces are key to our achievement. Secondly, we offer a very comprehensive language programme in-house. Chinese, Spanish, Arabic, German and French are all offered. Finally, parental involvement and transparency sets us apart. I think that being able to see what is happening, and to discuss matters in a very open way is essential. Communication isn’t always perfect, but it is extremely good.

What grade does the school cater too?For now it is up to Year 10, but will expand to Year 11 this year. The school offers a full range of subjects at IGCSE, with a particular focus on languages. We also offer GCSE music, and design/technology, which can sometimes be left out of a school’s curriculum. We allow time for ‘prep’ at the school, which is important, as it gives students time to address their homework with teachers present. It also allows us to ensure we can fit in all of our subjects and meet the requirements of the KHDA.

Why should a parent enrol l their chi ld at your school? We actually do what we say we’re going to do, and this isn’t a glib statement. We delivered 100% A*-A IGCSE for our first

(small) cohort of students to go through external exams. We have not, and never will, adjust our class size too. Our word is our bond. We have just 18 students in each early year class, and 20 students in all other classes throughout the school. This will always be our maximum, in order to offer attention to each child.

Apart f rom academics, what e lse does the school focus heavi ly on?We offer a wide selection of languages, sports, music, drama and, most importantly good manners. Somewhat old fashioned, but so be it.

Does the school of fer anything e lse in par t icular?Sword fighting – not fencing, but the real thing – and skiing, cooking, and robotics are part of the numerous activities we offer. I teach this as a co-curricular activity and it’s very popular with 25 students choosing it as an option, even though it hurts a bit! Robotics is a big thing within the school, as we believe that applied technology, build/design/application is a better way to address IT in the modern world, rather than passive consumption and use.

Ask the expertsHousehold or community d i lemma? Our sk i l led panel is here to helpQ. I’d like my home to be more energy efficient in 2016. Please tell me how to go about this?

A. There are several methods that can help make your home more energy efficient. Some changes are one-time investments; others are day-to-day implementations that can make a major difference. Effectively cleaning filters, checking for possible leaks from time to time, and monitoring the wear and tear of all pumps are some to consider. Older appliances are less energy-efficient, and replacing these with newer models will make a considerable impact on the environment. A preventive maintenance program with a reliable and skilled company that takes care of many issues related to wastage of energy as well, is worth looking into. Adam Akhund

Q. Does Better Homes offer lease and property management services for houses I have purchased but don’t have time to carefully manage?

A. Yes, we provide services for all managed properties. These range from marketing, to finding a tenant, drawing up agreements, exploring financing options, banking post dated cheques, managing repairs and maintenance, providing quarterly reports, organising rent collection, and much more, in apartments, stand alone-and community villas. Services are available for areas including Barsha, Tecom, Garhoud, Dubai Marina, Downtown Dubai, Business Bay, JLT, and Emirates Living. Carlin Tannen

Q. I’m new to town with my toddlers. Please can you tell me where to head for the best cafés or soft play areas in the city?

A. Is there a better way to relax while your children blow off steam than sat drinking coffee? There are tons of great soft play areas in Dubai, many of which come adjoined to cafes, where you can sit and enjoy a latte undisturbed while keeping a watchful eye on your little ones. As a mother of a very active one-year old, my favourite place to visit is

Q. How should I make sure my dog/cat is safe in my apartment when I’m at work – what measures need to be taken?

A. To keep your pet safe and out of harm’s way while you are out, make sure all electrical wires and live points are out of reach and switched off. For those with a particularly young or destructive dog, limit the space available; some people do this with the use of crates or pens. Ensure there is enough fresh, clean water, and keep the A/C on if it tends to get a bit hot, especially during summer. Give your pet an interactive toy that will help pass away the time while you are away, however, check the manufacturer’s label to make sure the toy doesn’t require adult supervision. A web camera will also give you peace of mind so you can check on your pet’s activities throughout the day. It’s always nice to have a comfy bed for your pet, and a good idea to leave the TV or radio on for company. Farah Al Khojai

WOOFIT

We think we may have hit gold with this little copper coloured speaker. The colour is bang on trend this season, and its size means we can literally slip it into a handbag, or even a large pocket, and lug it around everywhere we go.

What we like? For the size, the speaker’s sound is incredibly loud. We carried it to the gym quite a few times, and were amazed with how effective both

SamSUng PORTablE R6 SPEakER

With its elegant matte finish, compact size, and unique design, this portable Wi-fi speaker is the ultimate accessory for parties, as it will fit in seamlessly with your home décor.

What we like? When judging speakers, the first thing we notice is the bass, and Samsung’s speaker has incredible treble and bass. The sound quality is absolutely perfect,

particularly indoors, offering 360 audio and acoustics when placed in parts of the room. Overall the sound quality, and feel, is amazing.

What we didn’t like? The speaker isn’t loud outdoors, and probably not ideal for large terrace parties. However, it may be suitable for intimate al-fresco gatherings.

the wire connection and bluetooth settings were. We didn’t lose connection at any point, and were impressed overall with what this affordable speaker has to offer, and the amazing power it contains.

What we didn’t like? The bass isn’t as powerful as other speakers, though it isn’t unsatisfactory either.

To buy: Dhs199 at Virgin Megastore.
