BOOK AWARDSThe Excelsior Award is the only nationwide book award for graphic novels and Manga - where young people aged 11-16 decide the winner by rating each book as they read it. Eight graphic novels are selected for the shortlist and it now attracts over 250 schools and public libraries from all over the UK and Ireland.

The overall goal of this scheme is to encourage reading amongst teenagers. However, its secondary target is to raise the profile of graphic novels and Manga amongst school librarians and teachers. This storytelling medium has been a largely underused resource within education for many years. The Excelsior Award attempts to highlight some of the amazing books that are out there - books that fully deserve to be in our school libraries alongside regular fiction! We will be taking part in this book award here at Ernest Bevin, so if you are a fan of graphic novels and/or Manga, please come to Book Club next Wednesday when we will be looking at the new books. There are eight books on the shortlist to rate and you can read one or all, it’s up to you. Well done to those of you who have been reading books on the Wandsworth Fabulous Book Award shortlist. There is still time to read one or more of these ‘fabulous’ books especially with half term fast approaching. Voting for your favourite book from the list will open after half term, and you have until 3rd March to cast your vote. Pupils who have shown the most commitment to reading the shortlist will be invited to a special award ceremony in March where the winning author will be announced.Happy reading! Ms Richards, Librarian

BUG HOTELSA group of Yellow and Blue Ties have made Ernest Bevin a more friendly place for insects by building bug hotels. They were working with Green Up and the Princes Trust and learnt about the decline of some insect populations in the UK including the Large Blue butterfly. They then constructed special boxes that aim to attract insects and placed them in the college grounds.

SAFER INTERNET DAYThis year’s theme for Safer Internet Day ‘Unite for a better internet: be the change’ draws on how people interact with one another online, and the positive outcome in collectively calling for a ‘better’ internet. During the week there will be assemblies and activities about staying safe online, using social media responsibly and the PREVENT agenda against extremism and anti-radicalistion. There are resources and links to helpful websites on the college website.

THE BETT SHOWBETT is an annual exhibition that showcases the use of Information Technology in Education. Most schools sent representatives as visitors to see what is out there and bring back new ideas to school. Ernest Bevin was extremely proud of Ms Munday, head of Science, who presented at BETT 2017. She has been working with a company called NanoSimbox to develop a Virtual reality chemical world at atomic level and was asked to present the work at the show. Ms Munday & her students are really working hard to shape the future of education!

JUDO – MIDLANDS OPENThe weekend of the 28th & 29th January saw the Ernest Bevin Judo Squad travel to Walsall, Wolverhampton for the Midlands Open Age Banded Judo Championships. We took six boys but the stand out performance was from Ayoub Dafallah 9SAA fighting in the weight category above the one in which he achieved a National Bronze Medal back in December.Ayoub starting in blistering fashion, winning his opening contest in a matter of seconds, he then continued his fine form, winning all his contests by maximum scores all the way to the final where he dispatched the under 50kgs national champion with two amazing foot-sweeps to clinch the Gold Medal in style. It was a decisive win and he made his mark in the U50kg competition. Mr Bonti

RUGBYCongratulations to the Red Tie rugby team who beat Bolingbroke Academy 35-5. Great win! We were also pleased to be able to host the England 7s Academy players for an indoor training session when their training pitch was frozen. Some of our rugby players enjoyed seeing a full on training session in the dojo. Coach Dom
