James Pearce Morum Edgar Waters Reginald Dimond Frank was killed on 3rd July – his officer wrote that “we have lost a fine, upright and manly young fellow, and a faithful friend”. Herbert was killed just four months later.

Almost 200 men with Bexley connections died on the Somme: here are just some of their stories.

Brothers in arms

Frank Anning Kirby and Herbert Henry Kirby were brothers from Welling; they both attended Foster’s School. Frank worked for the Co-Operative store in Bexleyheath, Herbert at the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich.

From near and far

Many men on our local memorials served with Commonwealth forces on the Somme. Often they had left England just a few years before, seeking a new life overseas.

Edgar Waters served in the Australian Army, Reginald Dimond with the Canadian forces: both are remembered on the Bexleyheath War Memorial.
