Hello to our wonderful supporters. It is always with mixed emotions that I make that welcome as I know all too well you have found your way to us because you, or someone you care about deeply, has needed our support after the loss of such a precious life. I must start this newsletter with a message for the dads that are facing Fathers Day this weekend. I know the stores are filled with cards and promotions, the television is playing commercials and it seems everyone is looking forward to this day of celebration for the men in our children’s lives or our own fathers… it’s tough, I realise that. There are always reminders every day of the year, but the lead up for you this week can be somewhat daunting, and you’d be forgiven if you just felt like hiding away. The thing to remember is you deserve to be celebrated too. You are a father and will forever be a father to your child that has died, and no amount of time or distance can change that fact. That said, its no doubt not the way you may have imagined your Fathers Day celebrations to be. Therefore it is important that you are honest with yourself and those around you about how you think you might be able to muddle through the day, or find ways to add some hope and light to your day. The past few months have been super busy for the Bears Of Hope team. Firstly I must personally thank and congratulate the City2Surf participants – the results for this year far exceeded our expectations and with your help we will continue to reach families across Australia and more importantly increase our Beyond the Bear support for these families…Toni has done an exceptional job on this event and truly deserves a medal for the work it takes to make it all happen! Beards Of Hope – well this truly was a tiny idea that grew into a beast by the end of the season! Here’s a local AFL team, wondering how they might be able to help Bears Of Hope and they came to us with the idea, needless to say it was a no brainer to get on board and now we exceptional fundraising, awareness and some dads feeling like they personally are making a big difference in honour of their angel. Just a few weeks ago we held our 6th Annual Benefit Ball, oh what a night! Thank you to the volunteers that prepare throughout the year for this incredible event, our best ever! If you missed out you can save the date for next year 22nd August at Waterview Sydney Olympic Park – get in early as I expect tickets will sell out quickly based on the responses so far. Our traditional candle lighting was absolutely heavenly thanks to Luke Zancanaro music. At the ball we recognised the incredible work of a number of volunteers and congratulations again of course to our award winners: 2013 Founders Award: Jennifer & Nick Thomas 2013 Volunteer of the Year: Claire Jones 2014 Founders Award: Kelly Merchant 2014 Volunteer of the Year: Awarded equally to Cathryn Wilson & Maria Bond So what’s ahead? How can you get involved? What are we planning so you can join in a community of people willing to acknowledge that they are parents of babies no longer here, yearning to lead a full, loving and hope filled life? We have a Fathers Day event this Friday in Castle Hill Sydney and final numbers must be received by this Tuesday – see website for details. Remembrance day events are happening in a number of places and our biggest event will again be held at Eden Gardens North Ryde where we would love to have you and your family and friends join us. The Sacred Project is an opportunity for mothers who have experienced the death of a baby during pregnancy or infancy to create something delicate & bold in honor of their child. !Filmmaker Pia Dorer of “It’s Not All Black & White” along with Sweet Pea Project’s founder artist/writer Stephanie Paige Cole, have teamed up to create a new project that will raise awareness and unite bereaved mothers from all across the world. Based on Stephanie's poem "Sacred" from the recently released poetry collection “To Linger On Hot Coals” the Sacred Project aims to honor the bond shared by mother and child. !Pia and Stephanie are beyond excited to launch this new campaign at a global level later in the year, but right now, they need your participation. We would like to invite the mothers in our community, who have experienced the death of a baby during pregnancy or infancy, to be among the first women involved in this beautiful new project. We aren’t releasing the details on social media quite yet, in an effort to keep things quiet, but what we can tell you is that it will take just a few minutes of your time, it will be breathtakingly beautiful, and it will honour your child and the sacred bond that you two share. !If you would like to consider being a part of this project, please email [email protected] and we'd be happy to share the details with you. Thank you.

Irene) as she helps us through her fundraising and!awareness building through the show. We are beyond humbled and excited to have been considered let alone chosen as Lynne’s charity of choice for the show – we MUST get voting and keep her in there!!!Dads, wishing you a week filled with support & love from all around you and hoping you are surrounded by peace & hope for Fathers Day.!!Thank you once again to everyone that volunteers or helps Bears Of Hope in any capacity – without each and everyone of you we cannot build momentum and continue to grow for those families that need us now and in the future – we cannot do this without you.!

‘Recognition Of Life’ Certificates In Australia, the birth of a baby is formally recognised by the Government from 20 weeks gestation with a Birth Certificate. Bears Of Hope have created a Recognition of Life Certificate

for parents who experience a loss prior to 20 weeks gestation. There are 2 designs available.

You can find more information here: http://www.bearsofhope.org.au/a/226.html

To our beautiful baby boy Gabriel Timothy Reynolds, !The 8th of October 2014 will be 1 year since you were born into God's arms. Never would we have ever imagined that you would be taken from us so soon. You were our first born baby and at just 22 weeks gestation, you weren't strong enough to survive. But your memory has and you have touched so many lives in the short time that you were with us. You brought Daddy and I so much happiness and we will never forget you, nor will your grandparents, uncles, aunts and friends. !One day when your brothers and sisters come along, we will share your photos and the love we have for you with them so that you will never be forgotten. You were the most beautiful baby we have ever seen. !Your photos and casts of your hands and feet take pride of place in our house and not a day goes by that we don't look at them. !We miss you every day our beautiful boy, we love you with all of our hearts and we will see you again some day. !Love Mummy and Daddy xxxx !!To our precious baby girl Aurelia Skye Metchette Bates. We miss you & we love you very much. Love from Daddy & Mummy. X !!“Divine memories silently kept of babies we love and will never forget. We held them for a little while, made plans to watch them grow. We played each waking moment so they would know we loved them so. We cherish all the tiny things that went unnoticed then, an extraordinary bond between us grew our little ones, our men, our friends. A place of honor they will always have in our hearts and in our home. It gives us strength and peace to know that they're together and not alone. I know that god now holds them close and tends their every need. Our boys are safe in heaven now; they hold a noble place indeed.” For Thomas and Isaac from their Dad Luke.

“It’s Not All Black And White” !At our Benefit Ball last year we were so proud to launch this powerful and honest short film about pregnancy & infant loss. !“It's Not All Black And White” shares the stories of five families who have experienced the loss of their precious babies through miscarriage, stillbirth and neonatal loss (loss in the 28 days of life). !It is an essential film for everyone to see - it provides education and insight for those who have not lost a child as well as support and acknowledgment for families who have. !Pregnancy & Infant Loss does not discriminate. It cares not about race, financial status or health. It effects so many families worldwide yet it is still considered taboo to talk about. Only by BREAKING THE SILENCE can we heal together as communities, nations and as one united human race. Only then can we give a voice to this devastating loss and find HOPE in the journey ahead. !In developed countries alone: • 1 IN 4 WOMEN WILL EXPERIENCE MISCARRIAGE • 2% OF FAMILIES WILL EXPERIENCE THE LOSS OF

THEIR CHILD THROUGH STILLBIRTH OR NEONATAL LOSS !

Numbers are even higher in developing nations. !Pregnancy loss is common but that doesn't mean it doesn't hurt. !You can watch this moving film here: http://vimeo.com/76042283

Archie’s parents Brittney, Lachlan & their daughter

“Toni, thank you for your support at the finish line. It was a lovely day

and the balloon release was beautiful.”

Lyn (Archie’s Nanna)

Team Archie raised $5,285.75 (113 bears) in memory of

Archie Lachlan Finch Whittaker 19th January 2013

“On 19th January 2013 a beautiful angel Archie entered, left and changed our lives forever. Last year his brave mum Britt and dad Lachlan decided to gather family members together to walk the City2Surf and raise funds for Bears of Hope in memory of their beautiful son. Lachlan pushed Britt in a wheelchair all the way as she was pregnant again and her doctor advised against walking. !This year Lachlan pushed a pram carrying their gorgeous baby daughter, Ivy Violet, Archie's sister, all decked out in her "Remembering Archie" jumpsuit. Supporting this beautiful family was Team Archie in both 2013 & 2014 consisting of grandparents, cousins, aunties, uncles, extended family and friends proudly remembering our precious angel and raising much needed funds for Bears of Hope to help others who unfortunately will suffer similar tragedy in their lives. !2014 was made even more special for Team Archie at the finish line when we not only jubilantly finished our 2nd City2Surf but we were privileged to be a part of the very moving balloon release with the Bears of Hope crew in memory of all our beautiful angels. Always loved, always remembered. !Congratulations and thank you Toni and Bears of Hope for your amazing work. Nothing beautiful in this world is ever really lost… and those we cherish will always live on in our memory. !Love you Archie Annie Granny xxx

This was my first year and I walked with Team Archie. We had a wonderful day and the balloon release was a lovely finish. I couldn’t walk last

year due to work commitments, I will be walking again next year – for Archie. !

Archie is my Grandson, our family are making this a yearly get together for Archie.

City2Surf fundraiser Michael Hebb participated with his daughter Charlotte in honour of

Charlotte’s sister Bridgette Faith Hebb 16.03.11. Together they raised $336 which will

support 7 families. Thank you Michael & Charlotte for your efforts.

All ready to start the City2Surf with Bridgette's bear right

there along with us!Charlotte proudly showing

off her Bridgette shirt.A beautiful way to finish such a special day! My little princess Charlotte wanted to take her sister

the medal won in her honour.

“The City2Surf was an unbelievable adventure. Pete and I have had highs and lows since I miscarried last year, this was a high. It was an amazing feeling to raise just over $3,900 for Bears of Hope. The support of Toni and mothers I've met through the Facebook support page has been immeasurable and this is my thank you. We gratefully had a number of friends enter with us which made the day even more special. Jim had a lady running behind him the last 6km she came up to him at the end and said I've been following you and I almost stopped running but I saw your shirt and Lailah got me through it. Wow! We did this for Lailah and all of your angels. If you are able to join in one year please do, I simply can not describe the feeling of crossing over that finish line at the end of 14kms. Well done to all who entered this year. We are all amazing and our angels were with us all the way. See you next year Sydney!” !- Kellie Thomas

Page 11: Beyond The Bear - Spring 2014

“This year I ran the City2Surf with the blue pack. Although I had trained for the last few months leading up to the big race, I was full of nerves and excitement at the same time.. I think because for the first time I was running for a cause so close to my heart. I had chosen to open up about my personal story to friends and family, about how we lost our little one at just 6 weeks, in order to raise awareness about the importance of quality support for those dealing with such a tremendous loss. In return I was inundated with support, encouragement, inspiration and well wishes along with funds raised for Bears of Hope. It was exciting to be a part of such a large annual event knowing that so many others were contributing to a charity which meant something to them. I felt like I was doing okay during the first leg of the race and keeping up with my usual training pace along with the majority of the crowd. It was when I hit Heartbreak Hill that I started feeling exhausted. My legs felt like heavy weights which I was dragging up and slowing my whole body down. I was really unprepared for the hill and I had forgotten about the strength and endurance required to run up. At one point I just gave up and started walking because it all felt too hard! My walk almost turned in to a Sunday stroll when I felt a tap from behind. I turned around and saw a girl also wearing a Bears of Hope singlet. She said 'hi' and 'well done'. It was all the motivation and encouragement I needed to focus back on the race and bring back home why I was there in the first place. !I decided to make the most of what I had left and just be really positive. So I mustered up all the energy from inside, thought about my little one lost, got in to my zone, and put in my very best effort to finish it off. My legs were aching and I was out of breath towards the end but I made it to the finish line in a total time of 84 minutes and 22 seconds! And just when my body was aching all over I knew I was going to give it another shot next year :)” -Minerva Ho Thank you Minerva for raising $792 in memory of Baby Trinh 14th February 2014. Another 18 families will receive support from your efforts.

‘On May 18th I took part in the Great Ocean Road 45km Ultra Marathon from Lorne to Apollo Bay in an effort to raise funds for Bears of Hope and I am

delighted to say we managed to pull together $3,550 for the cause. The run itself was the toughest thing I have ever taken part in – the rolling hills proved a real test but at the 25km mark I rolled over on my knee so carried a bad injury

for the final 20km. If it hadn’t been for the support and contributions from family and friends, I know I wouldn’t have been able to complete the race. !

Finishing in a time of 3 hours 48 mins I am delighted with the achievement, but the real pleasure comes from knowing that we have managed to help out such

a worthwhile charity. After attending the annual Bears of Hope Ball and speaking to friends who have personally received support and care from Bears of Hope, I could not think of a more worthy cause, the difference that the Bears make to help families through tough times continues to amaze me. Hopefully the funds raised will provide Bears of Hope with the help they need to assist

more families in need.’ !Thanks, from Allan Russell

!“If there's one thing I've learnt is that you never know

what it's like to be a mum until you are a mum. I know 2 beautiful people who are already mummies

and like some of us mums out there wanted to have a another baby to share their world with - but they both came to our world sleeping. My heart still breaks for

them and their families every day. My City2Surf run is dedicated to them and their angels, their bravery, their

courage and the fact that we will never forget their beautiful children. !

For Victoria and Phoenix xx !Thank you Rita, you raised $996.30

(22 bears) in memory of Victoria and Phoenix

Page 12: Beyond The Bear - Spring 2014

Cath and I set up a meeting point for the day just 50m shy of the finish line this year. It was the best position with a view of the gorgeous ocean as well as being able to cheer our courageous Bears Of Hope families and friends across the line. A few tears were shed as those feelings of pride and heartache were felt watching each of our runners and walkers finish in memory of their precious babies. It was a real special part of the day for us both. This was also our first major sporting event wearing our newly designed shirts and caps. They were received by reaching our fundraising incentives we offer for sporting events or purchased from our website. The shirts were worn with so much pride and looked fantastic amongst the crowd. Fundraisers and supporters had the opportunity to then come and see us afterwards where it was lovely to meet everyone who I had been emailing and speaking on the phone with over the past 5 months. A lovely touch to end the 2014 City2Surf event was being able to release a balloon in memory of all the precious babies over the ocean.

The Sydney City2Surf was held on Sunday 10th August 2014. Lots of entertainment and gorgeous views enliven your senses as you weave your way along the 14km course starting at Sydney CBD and finishing at beautiful Bondi Beach. This was our 6th year in this event and another fantastic one with 53 active fundraisers and over 70 people supporting us on the day in memory of beautiful babies who they hold close to their hearts.

The Beards Of Hope campaign began early this year after the Nor-West Jets approached Bears Of Hope in March 2014 with the idea. We absolutely loved it! !The Nor-West Jets set up the first online fundraising page. Their goal was to raise $5,000 for our charity whilst they grew their beards through the 3 months of the winter/footy season and then shave them off in September. Since then, more than 70 guys (from across TAS, ACT, VIC, NSW and QLD) have jumped on board this new campaign and have raised over $35,000. Thank you so much to everyone who has supported these bearded brethren. !It has been absolutely heart-warming to see so many guys get involved, so many help raise a conversation about the loss of a baby and our support available, and to see so many honour their beautiful babies in this way. The beards look awesome and have been a real conversation starter. !Over the next 6 weeks we will see the beards shaved off which we hope to be able to share some photos and articles with you in our next newsletter edition. We know how courageous these guys are and we are so grateful to each and every one of them for getting involved. !On Saturday 9th August, the Nor-West Jets were interviewed for a Beards Of Hope promo. Thank you to the Nor-West Jets and Pia Dorer from Orange Identity for putting this together. You can watch the promo here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gX3L4kEWzDs !Beards Of Hope is going to be an annual awareness campaign so if you have been inspired by this year’s guys, please consider joining in next year’s event. Ewan's story !“Up until the day I signed up to Beards of hope I had no plans at all to shave my beard, I cannot stress this enough, NONE! I have been growing the beard (Tobias) since November 2012, and have not really even trimmed him in that time, this was the beard of a lifetime. I am sure at some stage I would have neatened up the length... eventually… but the days of ever being clean shaven were over. !As you can tell I love my beard a lot and have embraced everything to do with it, in fact it was through a post on Facebook by Beard Alliance that I discovered the Bears of Hope charity and this particular fundraising effort. !I signed up almost immediately (almost against my own will). The reason I did this is because in September 2011 my wife and I lost our son Austin at 20 weeks. It felt like the time to honour his memory and participating in something that benefits families that go through such a devastating event seemed right. From a personal perspective as someone who went through this without the materials and support offered by Bears of Hope I think what you do is wonderful and wish that I had known about you during my time of grief. !I am very eager to at least reach the $1,000 raised goal as a minimum requirement to remove the beard for two reasons: 1. It helps Bears of Hope, and 2. It eases my pain at the thought of being clean shaven.” !At the time of publication, Ewan’s fundraising efforts had reached $1,503 closing in on his target of $1,750.
