BFI AUDIENCE FUND• There ambition is to provide more breadth of films and
increase the choice for audiences across the UK.• The audience fund will support a greater choice of films
across the UK and is made of four elements:• FILM AUDIENCE NETWORK • BFI NEIGHBOURHOOD CINEMA• PROGRAMMING DEVELOPMENT FUND• FILM FESTIVAL FUND
FILM AUDIENCE NETWORK The Film Audience Network (FAN) is a major initiative developed by the BFI to enable film and events experts to work in partnership to boost film audiences across the UK, particularly in the areas of specialised and independent British film. The Film Audience Network is made up of nine hubs.
BFI NEIGHBOURHOOD CINEMABFI Neighbourhood Cinema helps people to create a cinema experience in their local area.• On the BFI website, they allow community cinemas to
promote their cinema in their area which allows then to reach new audiences and potentially get help from the larger cinemas whether that be sharing ideas or even equipment.
• New and existing touring cinema operators can now apply to the BFI Neighbourhood Cinema Touring Fund, this aims to bring cinema experiences and more specialised and independent British films to communities across the UK.
• Community cinemas bring local people together to watch great films, to get in involved and share ideas and experiences with each other.
PROGRAMMING DEVELOPMENT FUND• This offers to support the release of new films on a title by
title basis.• The Programming Development Fund is designed to help
film programmers and exhibitors put together programmes of films which will be enhanced by interpretation or education activity.
• It brings films to audiences across the UK in a fresh and original way.
FILM FESTIVAL FUND• Film festivals give audiences a wide range of
opportunities to engage with a wide rage of British and international films, celebrating the rich diversity of life in the UK and beyond.
• These film festivals inspire audiences, artists, filmmakers and professionals.
• The BFI has allocated Lottery funding of £1 million per year, for the four years from 2013-2017, to the Film Festival Fund.
DIVERSE AUDIENCE • Providing a more diverse approach in the movies that are made
is a more commercial gain as the audience will relate to this more.
• In a report people looked at specific, sometimes controversial, ways in which diverse audiences are portrayed.
• 48% of C2s and 55% of DEs say stories focusing on working class people are too often depressing.
• 75% of the Eastern European audience think films need to paint a more realistic picture of Eastern Europeans living in the UK.
• 80% of the Black audience say Black characters are too often portrayed as drug dealers in films.
