A message from David
Welcome Back! It is so good to have a school and kinder full of
kids again. The sounds along corridors and out in the
playgrounds makes us truly appreciate how special it is at Box Hill
North. We have experienced a really positive return with
students settling back into friendships, routines and a sense of
familiarity and comfort. All of the conversations that I’ve
had with students strongly indicates just how much they’ve missed
interacting with each other at the personal level. Our
focus has been centred on reconnecting relationships with a view to
prepare for a successful transition into 2021. We’ve received
great feedback from the wellbeing check-ins and appreciate you
affording our teachers the time to discuss this about your child.
In addition, our teachers have a robust assessment platform
that they are currently implementing to determine exact point of
need for every child in the area of reading, writing and
number. The assessments are non-intrusive and form part of
our classroom practice. This information is essential to us
determining next steps for your child and will form the basis of
parent teacher interviews scheduled for the week beginning, Monday
9th November. Health and Safety We are taking all
precautions necessary to ensure the health and safety of all
members of our community, given the current circumstances.
Thank you for following the drop off and pick up structures
specifically designed to reduce the number of adults in one place
at one time. It is important that we all remember to arrive
as close to time as possible and leave at earliest
convenience. This goes against everything that we believe in
as far as community connection, however, for a little bit of time,
I know we can help the greater picture of having everyone back as
soon as we are allowed. It is also timely that parents
are reminded to take great care on the roads, particularly during
pick up and drop off times. The design of the Elizabeth St
entrance is problematic. Please avoid the U-turn area near
the staff car park – this increases risk to the safety of children
and parents. I also encourage families to park further down
from the front entrance on Elizabeth St to assist with traffic
flow. Often when cars are parked in the first available spot,
access at the T intersection becomes dangerous. Thank you for
your patience and consideration – a true asset of our community.
I would like to congratulate the local council on their
decision to support a crossing supervisor on Station St. This
has been welcomed by our families and shows the level of importance
for the overall safety of Box Hill North. From Little
Things… Our kinder kids are simply amazing and I am just so pleased
with the way they have quickly settled back into their
program. Last week, we started some of our transition program
in preparation for the move from kinder to primary. Narelle
took her group over to the prep classes and it was nice to see how
excited the group was to explore new surroundings with a real sense
of pride in becoming a ‘big’ kid! We will continue to provide
regular opportunities in preparation for 2021 with the knowledge
that this will greatly assist the continuity of learning and
relationships. Of particular interest, our state has embarked
on a ground breaking and transformative program of reform with all
new primary schools built to incorporate early childhood facilities
as part of the strategy. We are of course in the most
fortunate position of having an established kindergarten onsite and
leading the way in terms of succinct transition into the primary
setting, complimented by the professional knowledge of our staff
and relationships with families. Places for our 3 and 4 year
old programs are quickly filling up and if you know of any families
who have kinder aged children for 2021, please point them in the
right direction! Prep Enrolment 2021 Places for next year’s
prep classes are also limited and we are encouraging all families
to make contact with our office staff or through our new
website to secure enrolment. To support our local
families in the process of joining our amazing community, Duong and
Kate will have brochures ready for a letter drop. It’s a
great way to use your daily exercise and help make a difference for
Box Hill North. Your Opinion Matters We are always looking
for ways to seek your feedback on things that work well and areas
for improvement. Each year, the Department offer an
independent parent survey that helps shape the future of every
school. This is in partnership with feedback that we collect
from students and staff. Typically, those selected for survey
are randomly selected. This year, we have been extended the
opportunity to ask all parent members of our community to provide
feedback and is an option that I personally am keen to
embrace. Sarah Thomas from the office will soon send an
invitation via Compass with a direct link to complete a 20 minute
survey. All information is in confidence and the reports
presented to us will be used as part of our improvement
agenda. Of course, you never have to wait just for an
official survey to provide feedback. We love hearing positive
stories and things that we can work towards. Positive
Relationships Our new ‘house’ approach officially launched this
week with a really positive start to something different.
Students from each house enjoyed sharing lunch with each other in
their designated area of the school. Our intent is to build
strong relationships with all students and all staff through a
sense of belonging. Tracey, Mr P, Ryan and Cara are leading
the charge as house leaders with the support of our senior house
captains and student improvement leaders. Some great
activities have been lined up that will compliment our core values
and share the responsibility of pastural care. Our staff have
embraced the challenge and there’s a bit of a competitive edge
being bantered around. Go Koonung!

6+1Traits of Writing
During term 3, classroom teachers participated in 1.5 hours of
Professional Learning on the 6+1 Traits of Writing each Wednesday
via Zoom. The 6+1 Traits of Writing are: Sentence Fluency, Voice,
Ideas, Word Choice, Organisation, Conventions and Presentation. The
traits are used to teach, model and assess all aspects of writing.
We narrowed our focus down to the trait of Sentence Fluency and how
we could enhance our current teaching and assessment methods
through this trait. We looked at using high quality literature
(Mentor texts) within the writing hour, conferencing with each
student every 2-3 weeks about their writing and we revisited our
whole school Instructional Model which is how we plan and teach
each lesson. Over the next coming weeks teams will share student
writing samples in the weekly newsletter highlighting our talented
writers at BHNPSK. If you have any further questions about our

a Writing Excellence award for her story titled ‘Secret’.

Our Online Uniform Shop stocks all items of uniform,
bags and accessories. Simply purchase your item via the online shop
using your debit or credit card via Paypal, and the uniform will
sent home through your child’s classroom. If you are seeking
2nd hand items, please contact Trish and Sarah at the office
on 9890 5023. Alternatively, the uniform shop is also available
through our Website under the tab of current
parents.
SUNSMART REMINDER - HATS and DRINK BOTTLES
As a sunsmart school the time has come for students to wear a hat
at recess and lunch time. Our school sunsmart policy states
that students need to start wearing appropriate hats (wide brimmed)
daily from September 1st to the last day in April. Please see
the office or the uniform shop if you need to order a new hat for
your child. Also please ensure your child brings a drink bottle
each day clearly labelled.
Yes, the mango fundraiser is happening! Here is your chance to
order trays of mangoes to raise funds for our school and
kinder!

· Each tray holds approx. 7kg of mangoes (about 12 -20 depending on
size)

LAPTOPS and DONGLES RETURN
In celebration of our students returning next week, can all
loaned laptops, chargers and dongles please be returned to the

Bookclub
Scholastic Bookclub Issue 7 is available now and catalogues have
gone home with your children this week. In this issue,
there's bonus Christmas titles included as well as many titles at
$6 or less. Please get your orders in by 26th
October either via your child at the office or online using
the LOOP system. ** Also please make sure you note on your
order if you do not want the books to be sent home with your child
when they arrive. Any queries, please call or email Sarah or
Trish in the office.
Chicken Roster
Our chickens need your help on the weekends please!
If you are able to assist with our chickens on Saturday or
Sunday this term, please click here to add your name
and availability to the roster. All instructions are on the
google doc where you put your name down or you can email
[email protected] . Also any eggs laid on
the day of your cleaning and feeding, you get to keep!
Sandpit Toys Needed!
We are seeking donations please of any plastic tools, buckets,
scoops, etc that we can use in our sandpit. Items can be left
at the office. Many thanks!
** Poster Competition **
Is your child interested in entering a poster competition on
a science data project of their choice? Winners of the 3/4 or
5/6 division will get $50 to share in their team! I have
registered our school to enter the Statistical Society of Australia
(SSA) National Poster competition ( https://ssapostercomp.info/ ).
Groups of 2-5 students can enter the competition and submit a
poster on their experiment or study. Poster entries need to be
submitted by 10 November. To check out past poster winners

project ideas that I could help guide the students in: How fast do
our school chickens grow? Which colour chicken egg weighs the most?
Do chickens improve or reduce biodiversity in our school orchard?
How much less are we travelling in the pandemic? A project related
to the plant project in 5/6. Are there more birds at Box Hill
central mall or Bushy creek parklands? Which has more biodiversity?

Dear Parent, It is great to have the students come back to
school. We look forward to seeing them again in OSHClub.
National Nutrition Week 11th October - 17th October Try
for 5 is an annual campaign powered by Nutrition Australia
encouraging Australians to increase their vegetable consumption to
the recommended five serves per day. At OSH we focus on a healthy
menu and encourage children to include vegetables and fruits in
their diet. Children love our cooking experiences which
allows them to explore different foods. Did you know? The food we
serve at before and after school care is informed by the Australian
Dietary Guidelines, but heavily influenced by the suggestions we
receive from parents and children. Children are regularly surveyed
to find their favourite foods, which we then incorporate into our
weekly menu. Child and parent suggestions are always welcome!
Enrolling your child Enrolling your child in OSHClub is easy and
free. All you need to do is complete an enrolment form online
at www.oshclub.com.au where you will have the option of
booking as either a permanent or casual user. I believe this to be
beneficial for all families as once your child is enrolled you then
have the comfort of knowing the program is available to you anytime
should any unforeseen circumstances arise. It also gives you the
assurance of knowing that your child or children will be cared for
in a safe, warm and friendly environment. If you would like to
discuss the possibility of enrolling your child, feel free to visit
the OSHC room any afternoon. You can’t miss us- We’re wearing
bright red t-shirts! Time to Slip, Slop, Slap! Just a
reminder that as it is Term 4, it’s time to Slip, Slop, Slap!
Please make sure your child brings a hat to the OSHClub program.
OSHClub has a “No hat- No outside play” policy. OSHClub also
provides sun cream. If your child is allergic to a
particular type of sun cream, please inform the coordinator (Mandy)
at the program. We also encourage you to read our sun smart policy.
Did you know Box Hill North OSHClub has a philosophy? We are
always striving to improve and are currently focusing on effective
leadership and management which directly contribute to the
creation of a quality environment for your child’s learning and
development.

passive (e.g. cooking, art, reading) and an active (e.g. sports,
games, competitions) activity to cater for the wide variety of
