ABOUT THE SONGBhombela is a traditional South African stick passing game telling of a mother and her children riding on a train for workers. As with all folk songs, the text and pitches vary slightly by region, and it continues to evolve over time. We chose the version stating that the mother is waking the children, “evusa abantwana”. Special thanks to Magugu Sithole, Pumla Majola Cohen, and other native speaking sources for their assistance with translation and cultural context.

PERFORMANCE NOTESThe rhythm stick parts may done by the whole choir or a select few. If only done by a few, the rest of the choir may join in and “clap” when the stick holders “strike”. Scan the code below to watch an instructional video on how to perform the rhythm stick parts.

ABOUT THE ARRANGER

Will Skaff is a music educator, singer, composer, and clinician living in the San Francisco Bay Area. He teaches middle school general music and cho-rus at The Hamlin School and is one of the directors at the Peninsula Girls Chorus. He is the former director of choirs at Sacred Heart Preparatory in Atherton, California and has trained adult music educators at the Southeast Texas Kodály Certification Program. He also serves on the board of the Northern California Association of Kodály Educators.

ABOUT THE EDITOR

Melissa Keylock has served on conducting staff at the San Diego North Coast Singers, Princeton Girlchoir, the American Boychoir School, the Indianapolis Children’s Choir, and previously taught public and private school. Melissa serves in leadership positions with the American Choral Directors Association, and enjoys traveling as guest clinician and presenter at festivals and conferences. Ms. Keylock is a choral composer and arranger and her publishers include Colla Voce, Galaxy, Chorister’s Guild, and Hal Leonard.
