‘Pakistan completes 90 per cent work on Kartarpur Corridor’

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has com-pleted 90 per cent work on the Kartarpur Corridor from the zero line to Gurdwara Sa-hib and plans to inaugurate it on the 550 birth celebrations of Guru Nanak in Novem-ber this year, according to a media report. The corridor will connect Darbar Sahib in Pakistan’s Kartarpur with Dera Baba Nanak shrine in Gurdaspur district and fa-cilitate visa-free movement of Indian Sikh pilgrims, who will have to just obtain a per-mit to visit Kartarpur Sahib, which was established in 1522 by Sikh faith founder Guru Nanak Dev.

The first batch of pilgrims from India will arrive in Paki-stan on November 9, how-ever, the number has not yet been specified, the Express Tribune reported.Accord-ing to the report, 90 per cent work on the Kartarpur Corri-dor, including the construc-tion of the main road, bridge and buildings from zero line to Gurdwara Sahib has been completed by Pakistan.“From the Pakistani side of the bor-der, Prime Minister Imran Khan and Chief of the Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa are likely to inaugurate the corridor on the occasion of Baba Guru Nanak’s anni-

Both sides have agreed to maintain a channel of

The technical teams will meet again to en-sure seamless connectivity for the corridor is operational in time so that the pilgrimage can begin on the 550 birth celebrations of Guru Nanak this year, the report added. In November 2018, India and Pakistan agreed to set up a border crossing linking Gurd-wara Darbar Sahib in Paki-stan’s Kartarpur - the final resting place of Guru Nanak - to Dera Baba Nanak in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district. The shrine is visible from the Indian side of the border and every day a larger number of Sikh devotees gather to perform Darshan or sacred

viewings of the site. The Kar-tarpur corridor is expected to provide visa-free access to Indian Sikh pilgrims to the gurdwara in Kartarpur Sahib — a small town in Narowal, four kilometres from the Pakistan-India border, where Guru Nanak spent the last 18 years of his life.

This will also be the first visa-free corridor between the two nuclear-armed neighbours since their in-dependence in 1947.Paki-stan will build the corridor from the Indian border to the Gurdwara Darbar Sa-hib in Kartarpur, while the other part from Dera Baba Nanak in Gurdaspur up to the border will be constructed by India. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Friday de-manded the renaming of the Maharaja Bhupinder Singh Punjab Sports University as Chotte Sahibzade Baba Zoravar Singh and Baba Fateh Singh Punjab Sports Uni-versity, saying this would be a befitting homage to the supreme sacrifice of the youngest known mar-tyrs in world history, who laid their lives for their faith as well as core hu-man values.

In a statement here, senior SAD leader Prof. Prem Singh Chanduma-jra said the upcoming Sports University in Pa-tiala district should be renamed after the Chotte Sahibzade, the younger sons of the tenth Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, as every inch

of the land of this region was indebted to them for the manner in which they stood up to tyranny as well as their faith estab-lishing a unique example

in world history. Stating that Congress ministers should not have fallen prey to sycophancy by suggesting that the uni-versity be named after

the grandfather of Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh, the Akali leader said dedicating it to hon-our the unparalleled sac-rifice of the Chotte Sa-hibzade would be most appropriate. “This will not only raise the esteem of the new institution but would also be in keeping with the sentiments of Punjabis to have a prestigious insti-tution named by the Sa-hibzade”.

Asking the Congress government to revoke its earlier decision, Prof Chandumajra said the com-memoration would be most befitting as the Sahibzade

attained their martyrdom at Fatehgarh Sahib, just 30 km away from Patiala. He said dedicating the big-gest sports University of the Region to the Sahibzade would also go a long way in attracting Punjabi youth to sports as well as wean-ing them away from bad influences.

“The Sahibzade and their life teach us about the core values of Sikh religion which have the answer to all our problems originating from the so-called modern lifestyle,” he said, add-ing “we need the greatest role models to attract our youth to sports.”

Senior leaders of the Aam Aad-mi Party (AAP) and Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Assem-bly Harpal Singh Cheema has expressed his utter dismay over the way the Shagun Scheme benefits, meant for labourer and workers in the state, were being usurped by middlemen in connivance with departmental officials, while the government was acting as a lame duck. He also seek probe into the matter.

In a statement issued from party headquarters here on Sat-urday, Cheema said that if datas were to be believed, the state labour department extended financial assistance worth lakhs to as many as 28 underage girls for their marriages under the Punjab Government’s flagship Shagun Scheme which reflected the manner how the scheme for the rural poor was being mis-managed, adding that the de-partment concerned disbursed a hefty amount worth Rs 8.58 crore to wrong beneficiaries between the years 2013 and 2018.Harpal Cheema further added that the genuine ben-eficiaries were being deprived of the due benefits available to

them under the scheme ow-ing to a well-organised racket being run by middlemen in connivance with officials of the department under the protec-

tive patronage of their political godfathers, which, he said, was worrisome. The AAP has de-manded that the deaf and dumb dispensation should order a high-level probe into the mat-ter of usurping of the Shagun Scheme benefits by middlemen and initiate stringent action against those found guilty of pocketing the benefits meant for the economically weaker strata of the society so that genuine beneficiaries were not deprived of the benefits under the scheme.

FAZILKA: District Magistrate, Fazilka, Manpreet Singh Chhatwal exercising the power under Section 144 of Criminal Procedure Code 1973, has issued the orders banning the use of drone camera and these orders will remain in force till September 20.

In these orders, it is said that the use of done camera is seen near the Military Station and during the marriage par-ties and other functions which puts a danger to the law and order and nation security in the district.

The District Magistrate has made it clear that flying of drone camera is in violation of the policy of Director General of Civil Aviation and Opera-

tion of Civil Remotely Piloted Aircraft System. Keeping this in view and to maintain law and order and keep intact the national security, these orders have been issued, said the District Magis-trate. Agency

After a 38 years old drug-addict had been chained by his family with bed who had attempted to commit suicide, it had disclosed that the gov-ernment had badly failed to not only to control over drug suppliers and peddlers. Be-sides, also failed to rehabili-tate the addicts who had gone to such a worse condition that they had been planning to commit suicide due to the un-affordability to purchase the drugs as well as due to their deteriorated and most miserable condition of health and wealth.

The District Administra-tion had come forward after getting the information of chaining an addict by his fam-ily. Showing a very generous gesture the Deputy Commis-sioner not only get him free from chains, but also got him admitted to a government run de-addiction Centre at Fero-zepur for his rehabilitation. The drug addict and his family tell the tale of their foe and

number of drug peddlers in the villages, who had gone to a very alarming side. Despite knowing all about the rising number of addicts and drug peddlers, the government has become mere spectator.

It is said that a drug-ad-dicted of Kada Borha village had been chained by his fam-ily last week after he had at-tempted to commit suicide and had later been rescued by the Deputy Commissioner Chander Gaind who himself visited the residence of the

victim and brought him in ambulance and got him ad-mitted to de-addiction centre at the Civil Hospital, Feroz-

epur. But the situation can be adjudged from a statement of the villagers that there are more than 40 addicts in this small village and many of them also been involved in supplying drugs and to purchase the drugs for their own use.

After this episode, a sar-panch of a nearby village told Daily Post on condition of anonymity that, it was not this guy who had attempted suicide, but the number of such cases is very high. He told that he had seen many cases in which the family and the police knew that the de-ceased had knowingly admin-istered high dose of drug only to commit suicides.

He told that many drug ad-dicts had been choosing to commit suicides by taking over dose knowingly than to get rid of intolerable pain due to unavailability and un-affordability of the drugs, be-cause they had not left any-thing to sell to buy the drugs.

He urged the government to locate the addicts and ped-dlers and take bold step to rehabilitate the addicts as well as put the peddlers and suppliers behind bars. He said that it would be better to save the new generation from such suppliers beside rehabilitating the addicts.

NC, PDP, Cong deliberately trying to create fear among people of Kashmir: BJP

JAMMU:The BJP’s Jammu and Kashmir unit on Satur-day accused leaders of the NC, PDP and the Congress of deliberately trying to trigger panic among the people as they themselves were frightened, and as-serted that the common man has no fear.

The party’s state unit president, Ravinder Raina, said every common citizen of the country is safe un-der the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is applying balm on the wounds of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. “Some politicians in the valley are knocking the door of the Governor (Satya Pal Malik) in the dead of night because they are frightened...The gover-nor had also made it clear that those who are corrupt cannot save themselves. Those who have ill inten-tions, involved in betrayal and looted the money of poor people and filled their

coffers are a worried lot,” Raina told reporters af-ter chairing a core group meeting of the BJP here.A delegation of PDP presi-dent Mehbooba Mufti, J&K Peoples Movement chief Shah Faesal and Peoples Conference leaders Sajjad Lone and Imran Reza Ansa-ri met the Governor Friday night as speculations grew in Kashmir Valley about some possible major deci-sions regarding the state’s special status.

The BJP leader, how-ever, asserted that Article 370 and Article 35A of the Constitution, that give special status to the state,

were the main cause for separatism and terrorism. “These provisos are also discriminatory against women and under the garb of these articles, blood of ordinary citizens was suck, Jammu and Kashmir Bank and central funds were looted by a few dynas-ties,” he claimed. He said political parties such as the National Conference, Peo-ples Democratic Party and the Congress are spreading rumours and creating fear among the people in the valley with vested interest.

“The common man has no fear and under the leadership of Modi, every common citizen is safe in the country,” he said. He said Modi visited Jammu and Kashmir a number of times in the past to share the grief of the people of the state.

“After A B Vajpayee, he is the only prime minister who is applying balm on the wounds of the people

and we should have full faith in him and his gov-ernment. Every decision this government takes with regard to Jammu and Kash-mir will be in the interest of the people of all the three regions of Jammu, Ladakh and Kashmir and the coun-try,” he said.

Raina also appealed to the people to observe the upcoming Independence Day with enthusiasm by unfurling the tricolour on their house across the state.Allaying concerns over ad-ditional troop deployments in the state, he said the step was taken in view of the se-curity concerns as “suicide squads” of terrorists have infiltrated into the state to carry out a major strike at the behest of Pakistan. “Irrespective of caste, creed and religion, we need to stand up to the chal-lenge and help our security forces to frustrate the evil designs of the enemy,” he said. JAMMU: The Vishva Hindu Parishad on Saturday an-nounced cancellation of the upcoming annual Budha Amarnath yatra, citing threat posed by Pakistan-sponsored terrorists to the pilgrimage. The 10-day yatra in Poonch district of Jammu region, organised by the VHP, was scheduled to begin on August 6.

“In view of the emerging security situation following the recovery of US made sniper rifle and landmine along the Amarnath yatra track in Kashmir, we have decided to cancel the yatra to Budha Amarnath for the safety of the pilgrims,” State VHP president Leela Karan Sharma told report-ers here. The annual Amar-nath yatra has already been suspended due to security reasons.

Sharma, who was flanked by several other senior leaders, including Bajrang Dal national convenor So-han Singh Solanki, said the

decision to suspend the yatra was taken at a general meeting which was con-vened here to take stock of the situation. Besides Budha Amarnath, the VHP has also decided to suspend the Kousar Nag yatra in Kulgam district of south Kashmir and the Machail yatra in Kishtwar district, Sharma said.

“We will not go for any confrontation with the gov-ernment over its decision to suspend the Amarnath and Machail yatra... The safety of the pilgrims is our primary concern and in case anything bad hap-pens here, it has serious repercussions across the country,” Sharma said.

Solanki termed the sus-pension of the pilgrimages as “unfortunate” and said he had come here to take stock of the arrangements for the Budha Amarnath yatra which is being un-dertaken by the VHP with a special prayer on August 5 before the first darshan at the shrine next day. “Over 25,000 pilgrims from across the country had reg-istered themselves for the yatra and have been told to cancel their plan,” he said. The Gandhi clan, per-ceived as indispensable to the Congress party, is purportedly missing from Haryana Congress posters, which have cropped up on social media, ahead of the mega rally by former Chief Minister Bhupin-der Singh Hooda on Au-gust 18 to kick-start his election campaign.

The posters about a “workers conference” meeting scheduled for August 4 in Rohtak only portray photographs of B S Hooda and his son Deepender Singh Hooda. However, when contacted Deepender Hooda declined to com-ment on the matter saying it would not be appropriate for him to comment.

“I don’t think it’s appropriate for me to comment on the matter. I think that the question is not worth answering.

Rahul’s letter for a bridge in Wayanad upsets local MLA

WAYANAD (KERALA): A letter by Wayanad Lok Sabha member Rahul Gandhi to district collector A.R. Ajayakumar requesting a permanent bridge on the Kalindhi river has not gone down well with lo-cal CPI-M legislator O.R. Kelu.Kelu represents the Mananthavady Assem-bly constituency, part of the parliamentary con-stituency represented by Gandhi.Gandhi wrote the letter to the collector on Wednesday requesting construction of a bridge for over 150 residents of the Nettara tribal colony. “With all due respects to Gandhi, I would like to tell him what he should be doing is to ensure the full support of the Centre for the overall develop-ment of Wayanad.

“Gandhi should leave things like bridges to the legislator, who has been working hard for this bridge for the past two years. Since he has raised the issue, my humble submission to Gandhi is to ask what his party col-league, who represented Wayanad in the Lok Sabha since this constituency was formed in 2009, was doing for this bridge,”

kelu told IANS.M.I. Shanawaz was the Con-gress Lok Sabha member for almost two terms from here. He passed away in 2018.

“Gandhi should make efforts to see that the long-standing dream of a railway line pass-ing through Wayanad is achieved, get a complete farm package and steps are taken to remove bot-tlenecks in smooth inter-state traffic to Bangalore.

He should also find a permanent solution to the man-animal con-flict, a routine affair in the Wayanad district. He should spend more time

on these issues and leave the issues, like building bridges, to legislators,” said Kelu.

Over a decade now, the tribals in Nettara colony have been using a wooden bridge, which gets washed away every monsoon, leaving them stranded till a new bridge is built.“I have got a Rs 10 crore allocation made in the annual budget for a per-manent 150-metre-long bridge and a 1.5 km long approach road.

Campaigning ends for Vellore LS poll

CHENNAI: The campaigning for the August 5 Vellore Lok Sabha elections came to an end on Saturday evening.Though there are 28 contes-tants in the fray, the main fight is between the ruling AIADMK’s A.C. Shanmu-gam and DMK’s D.M. Kathir Anand. The NMK led by See-

man has also fielded its can-didate with Deepalakshmi in the fray while the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), floated by actor-turned politician Kamal Haasan, decided to stay away from the polls. The election to the seat, originally scheduled for April 18, was postponed after Rs 10 crore cash was seized from DMK leaders in Vellore district. Three months later, this became the central talking point of the AIADMK’s campaign targeting the DMK.

The absence of prog-ress in these cases has in-creased the voters’ apathy in the elections as well as

the Election Commission (EC). While rescinding the poll, the EC had said that it was “fully satisfied” that the electoral process in Vellore had been vitiated on ac-count of unlawful activities on behalf of DMK candidate Kathir Anand and some of its workers.

“In the Commission’s considered opinion, al-lowing the current electoral process to conduct the poll in the constituency on April 18, 2019, as scheduled, in such a vitiated atmosphere would have severely jeop-ardised the conduct of free and fair elections,” the EC had said. IANS

India (Bharat) needs indigenous style of change through Indianis-ing of the systems and approaches. This was stated by Prafulla Ketkar, the editor of Organiser (weekly) at the Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS) here on Friday during the panel discussion on “Media and the Nation: The Chang-ing Landscape.” Other panellists included Arun Anand, CEO of Delhi based media think tank IVSK, while the discus-sion was moderated by renowned writer and editor Sandipan Deb.

Ketkar said that Bharat as a society has a great appetite for the change in the form of continuity by Indianising things in our own way and creating a self-notion of our nation. The upcoming reading class are aspirational English speaking individ-uals who are still rooted to the Indian parameters of linguistics and ethos.

Arun Anand said that media should be run as

business enterprise with ethics like a social en-terprise. Business model of the media also helped in the proliferation of the media. The role/duty of media can be ac-complished only if it has revenue to provide its employees a good liveli-hood.

During the discussion Sandipan Deb said that after the emergence of social media and mobile phones now the perim-eter or scope of report-ing has been increased hugely, but it has also de-generated the value of the discourse.Prof Makarand R. Paranjape, Director, IIAS, in his inaugural address and

he welcomed the august gathering. During the introductory remark he also said that these days there is a plethora of in-formation and prolifera-tion of sources, but there is an acute lack of the reliability of content.

Col (Dr.) Vijay K. Tiwari, Secretary, IIAS has summarised the topics discussed by the panellists during the discussion and proposed the vote of thanks on behalf of the Institute. On this occasion Fel-lows, Associates, Staff of the Institute, Professors of Himachal Pradesh University and eminent citizens of Shimla were also present.

SHIMLA: : Various students’ organisations have start-ed their crusade through rallies and charter of de-mands for the restoration of direct elections to the Students Central Associa-tions (SCAs) of Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) and affiliated colleges with the start of academic session 2019-20. How-ever, college principals are not inclined to accept the demand.

The principals and the state authorities fear that eruption of violence can be a consequence of restoration of direct election, vitiating the academic atmosphere at a meeting which was convened at the HPU recently. Most of the principals were of the

opinion that the direct elections should not be held as it could trigger violence and observed that in fact there had been a sharp decline in violent incidents in the past four years.

The recommendations of the meeting were for-warded to the high power committee for consider-ation. According to Vice-Chancellor of HPU Prof Sikander Kumar the final decision will be taken by the government.

After the clashes be-tween the students groups, the direct elec-tions in the state univer-sities and their affiliated colleges were scrapped in 2014.Contrary to the view point of the princi-pals, the organisations of

the students are in favour of the direct elections to the Students Central As-sociations.

The Akhil Bharati-ya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) is trying to in-fluence the government to accept the demand, whereas the Students Federation of India (SFI) and the National Students Union of India (NSUI) have recently submit-ted separate memoranda to the Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur and the Edu-cation Minister Suresh Bharajdwaj demanding restoration of direct elec-tions to the SCAs.

The ABVP has been pressurising the BJP government on the is-sue saying that it had promised to restore the

SCA elections in its vi-sion document before the 2007 general election of the Legislative Assem-bly. The ABVP has also said that in a democratic set-up, students have the right to elect their rep-resentatives, who could raise their issues and when Class IV employees, teachers, non-teaching staff, university court and executive council can have elected bodies, why should the students be deprived of the same. The ABVP has launched an agitation to press for restoration of direct elec-tions to the SCAs.

According to the SFI, the absence of elected SCAs has led to anarchy in the university as the nominated SCAs have

failed to effectively raise the issues. The SCAs are the representative bodies and platforms for raising the demands of students. The SFI has claimed that its signature campaign for restoration of the direct elections to the SCAs has so far been supported by over 16,000 university and college students.

The NSUI after having raised the demand for di-rect elections has warned the government to start a statewide agitation in case the demand would not be fulfilled. Both the SFI and the NSUI have further observed that the directly elected student bodies are the only way to oppose commercialisa-tion and privatisation of education. DP

The state unit of the Con-gress will launch ‘Save Hi-machal’ campaign, from Sunday onwards, the day of Dr YS Parmar’s birth anniversary. The deci-sion has been taken at the meeting of the Congress Legislature Party, which was held at Shimla on Friday night. Leader of the Congress Legislative Party Mukesh Agnihotri revealed this here on Sat-urday.

On the other hand, the HP Congress Committee has decided to to celebrate Parmar Jayanti on August 4 at Bagthan in Sirmaur district, the native village of Dr YS Parmar in which freedom fighters from Sirmaur will be honoured. This was announced by Kuldeep Rathore recently.

Leader of Opposition Mukesh Agnihotri talking to media persons here on Saturday said that as the main Opposition party in the state, the Congress has the responsibility to protect its interests. He has claimed that the present government is

bent upon selling out the state and has started auctions on the pretext of inviting nearly Rs 1 lakh crore investments. He has added that, therefore, the Congress has decided to launch the ‘Save Hi-machal’ campaign. He has further warned that wherever the govern-ment will try to take such wrong steps, these will be opposed by the Congress.

He has said that the CLP meeting will further be apprised of the moves of the government in its meetings and in the monsoon session of the Assembly, the party MLAs will certainly raise the is-sue tooth and nail.

Agnihotri has alleged that instead of invit-

ing global tenders, the government has started signing MoUs for the sell out the state. He also ridi-culed the involvement of outsiders through one or more organisations who have been engaged in promoting this sell out. He has pointed out that this is not the correct and judicious way of inviting investments and signing MoUs directly.

He has further said that at the same time, the gov-ernment is talking about providing employment to 60,000 youths, which is a gimmick, because the government itself is not clear on the investors and investments.

Agnihotri has also ques-tioned the working on

the National Highways (NHs) and said that even the smallest roads have been declared as NHs. He took up the issue of smartcities of Shimla and Dharamshala. He has also pointed out, “Industries have been migrating out from Himachal Pradesh. A Chocolate company has okayed voluntary retire-ment to 703 employees. The mafia dominates in every region of Him-achal.”

At the press conference nine Congress MLAs _ Dhani Ram Shandil, Ja-gat Singh Negi, Nand Lal, Vinay Kumar, Rajendra Rana, Inderdutt Lakhan-pal, Vikramaditya Singh, Ashish Butel and Pawan Kajal_ were present.

‘Judge blocks Trump asylum restriction’WASHINGTON: A judge on Friday blocked a move by US President Donald Trump’s administration to stop migrants from claiming asylum unless they had en-tered the country at an official border crossing, news outlets reported. The policy, enacted by Trump last year, is among a host of measures his government has taken against the movement of hundreds of thousands of migrants from Central America and elsewhere who have re-cently tried to cross into the US from Mexico and request asylum.Federal judge Randolph Moss, sitting in Washington, ruled that the policy was “in excess of statutory... author-ity,” ABC News reported.Moss said it contradicts standing US immigration law, which al-lows undocumented people who are physically present in the country to apply for asylum even if they did not enter at an official port of entry, The Hill newspaper said. ‘Kim supervised latest rocket launcher test’

SEOUL: North Korea said Saturday its leader Kim Jong Un supervised another test-firing of a new multiple rocket launcher system that could potentially enhance the country’s ability to strike targets in South Korea and US military bases there. The report by Pyongyang’s official Korean Central News Agency came a day after South Korea’s military said it detected North Korea firing projectiles twice into the sea off its eastern coast in its third round of weapons tests in just over a week.

Experts say the North’s increased testing activ-ity is aimed at ramping up pressure on Washing-ton and Seoul over stalled nuclear negotiations with the United States and planned U.S.-South Korea military exercises, and that

its weapons displays could intensify in the coming months if progress in talks isn’t made.

North Korea has said Kim supervised the first test of the same rocket artil-lery system on Wednesday.KCNA said Kim expressed “great satisfaction” over Friday’s tests, which it said confirmed the system’s “altitude control level flight performance, track chang-ing capability, accuracy of hitting a target and war-head explosion power of the guided ordnance rocket.”

The report didn’t in-clude any direct mention of the United States or South Korea.South Korea’s presidential office had said the U.S. and South Korean militaries shared an assess-ment that Friday’s launches were likely of short-range ballistic missiles. AP

China no longer top trading partner of US

WASHINGTON:As a result of their ongoing trade, China is no lon-ger the top trading partner of the United States and has been replaced by America’s neigh-bours Mexico and Canada, ac-cording to a media report. In the first half of the year, Mexico was the top trading partner of the United States followed by Canada, the latest official data

reveals, according to The Wall Street Journal.

As a result of the ongoing trade war between the US and China, imports from China to the US dropped by 12 per cent and America’s export to China fell by 19 per cent, the daily said. After coming to power, Trump has imposed 25 per cent import tariff on chinese prod-

ucts worth USD 250 billion. Another 10 per cent tarrif on products worth USD 300 bil-lion will come into effect on September 1.

Trump has so far maintained that China has been unfair to the US. China has also taken several retaliatory steps. Ac-cording to a Commerce Depart-ment report, the total value of bilateral goods exchanged with China fell 14 per cent in the first half of the year to USD 271.04 billion, The Wall Street Journal said. Hong Kong police warn protests off designated route illegal

WASHINGTON:Hong Kong police on Saturday called on pro-testers to stick to designated routes and times after violent clashes marred the last eight weekends of rallies calling for greater rights and government accountability.Police held a briefing ahead of a scheduled rally in Mong Kok, a bustling shopping district with a his-tory of hosting pro-democracy protests. Any demonstrations

that are not pre-approved will be “cleared out” as unlawful assemblies, police said.Hong Kong’s summer of protests, sparked by an unpopular ex-tradition bill, has continued unabated despite the govern-ment’s decision to suspend the legislation that would have sent some suspects to mainland China for trial.

While the pro-democracy rallies have been largely peace-ful, they have increasingly de-volved into skirmishes with police after some protesters refused to disperse at as-signed times. In the past two months, protesters have van-dalized buildings and thrown bricks, while police have fired tear gas and rubber bullets. A former British colony, Hong Kong was returned to China in 1997 under the framework of

“one country, two systems.” The city’s mini-constitution promises the city certain free-doms not afforded to those in the mainland, but Hong Kongers say Beijing has chipped away at their autonomy in re-cent years.

Several thousand civil ser-vants and their supporters crowded into a public park on Friday evening to show solidar-ity with the movement, which has broadened to include de-mands for direct elections and an investigation into alleged police brutality. Hong Kong residents have accused police of negligence after 44 people were injured last month in a mob attack that appeared to target protesters. Authori-ties said their resources were stretched due to the prolonged demonstrations. AP

‘Sharif made laws to launder money’

ISLAMABAD: Special Assistant to Pakistan Prime Minister, Ac-countability, Shahzad Akbar has accused the family of former pre-mier Nawaz Sharif of making laws in the 1990s to help them launder ill-gotten wealth. Sharing details of alleged telegraphic transfer of Rs 17 million to Sharif’s daughter Maryam Nawaz, Akbar said the family built an empire through corruption.

Akbar said everything worked in favour of the Sharif family till their names came up in the Panama Papers in 2016. He said the transaction of Rs 17 million in Maryam’s account was made in 2008, indicating that the family was still using flexible laws of the 1990s to bring money in Pakistan and also send abroad.

He said similar transfer of money from was made in the account of Sharif’s nephew Salman Shehbaz. “I say that 90 per cent of Salman Shehbaz’s wealth is based on TT (telegraphic transfer),” he said. He said in both cases the money trail is not established and that details of the cases would be sent to the National Accountability Bureau,

which is pursuing several cases against the Sharif family. Sharif had served Pakistan as its prime minister twice in the 1990s. He is credited with liberalising the economy when he first came to power in 1990.

Akbar has earlier too leveled serious charges against opposi-tion leaders, including Sharif who is the president of the larg-est Opposition party, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz. Mean-while, Opposition leaders alleged Akbar is on a witch-hunt at the behest of Prime Minister Imran Khan. PTI

US and Russia end missile treaty as new threats emerge WASHINGTON: A landmark arms control treaty between the US and Russia expired Friday after months in which nei-ther side made serious efforts to preserve a Cold War-era agreement that did not cover an emerging China or evolving missile technology that did not exist a generation ago. The Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces treaty came to an end with the US announcing that in the coming weeks it planned to test a new missile that would have been prohibited under the accord, which was signed in 1987.

Its demise comes amid rising doubts about whether the two countries will extend an agreement on long-range nuclear weapons scheduled

to expire in 2021.The Trump administration, which gave its six-month notice on February 2 of its pending withdrawal from the INF, had repeatedly said Russia was violating its provisions, an accusation President Barack Obama made as well.“The United States will not remain party to a treaty that is deliberately violated by Rus-sia,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in announcing the formal withdrawal, calling a Russian missile system pro-hibited under the agreement a “direct threat to the United States and our allies.”

The end of the INF, which comes as world powers seek to contain the nuclear threat from Iran and North Korea,

is another milestone in the deterioration of relations be-tween the US and Russia.“The denunciation of the INF treaty confirms that the US has em-

barked on destroying all inter-national agreements that do not suit them for one reason or another,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

“This leads to the actual dismantling of the existing arms control system.” A se-nior administration official downplayed the upcoming US weapons test, saying it was not meant to be a provocation. The central issue with the INF was that both Russia and the U.S. had long accused the other of cheating on the trea-ty, which banned land-based missiles of ranges between 500 and 5,500 kilometres.

The US said the non-compli-ant missile systems the Rus-sians fielded gave Moscow an advantage over NATO forces in Europe. The Obama admin-istration in 2014 first publicly accused Moscow of violating INF by testing a treaty-busting cruise missile. Russia denies

it has cheated and it coun-ters with a contention that America’s armed drones and missile defense system in Eu-rope are violations.

US military officials have said that 95 per cent of Chi-na’s ballistic and cruise mis-siles would have violated the treaty.“Since the strategic en-vironment has changed rapidly since the end of the Cold War, we need to find ways to use arms control to address the rise of China’s nuclear arsenal, the increase of Russia’s non-stra-tegic weapons stockpiles, and the emergence of new tech-nologies like hypersonic weap-ons,” said Texas Rep Michael McCaul, the top Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee. RIO DE JANEIRO: Argentina captain Lionel Messi has been given a three-month ban from international foot-ball for his claim that the Copa America in Brazil was

influenced by corruption. The Barcelona forward was also fined 50,000 US

dollars by South American foot-

ball govern-ing body CONMEBOL on Friday. The ruling

means Messi will miss Ar-gentina’s friendlies against Chile, Mexico and Germany in September and October. Messi has seven days to ap-peal the decision, reports Xinhua news agency.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner made the allega-

tions after being sent off for an

altercation with Gary Medel in

Argentina’s 2-1 defeat of

Chile in the Copa Amer-ica third-place playoff last month. After the match Mes-si said: “We don’t have

to be

part of this corruption. They [referees] have showed us a lack of respect throughout this tournament.” Messi also said the competition was “set up” for eventual

dollars for his comments and the red card. IANS

SYDNEY: Former Austra-lia captain Ricky Ponting Saturday called for cricket to ditch its requirement to have neutral umpires after a num-ber of incorrect decisions in the first Test of the Ashes series in England. Aleem Dar of Pakistan and West Indian Joel Wilson have drawn criti-cism after a number of their calls were overturned by the review system during the opening days at Edgbaston.

Ponting, who is part of the Marylebone Cricket Club’s (MCC) influential Cricket Committee, said he would ensure the matter is dis-cussed at their next meeting. “It’s already been spoken about a lot among the play-ers. If it’s not brought up (at that next MCC meeting), I’ll

make sure it’s added to the agenda,” he told the Cricket Australia website. “I would like to think the game has come far enough now for the game to not have neutral umpires. “People might say that with all the technology we’ve got now, it doesn’t matter that much. But it’s not a good spectacle when pretty obviously wrong deci-sions are made,” he added.

“There’s been a lot of neg-ativity about the DRS (Deci-sion Review System) over the years, but we’re pretty lucky that we had it (at Edg-baston).” The International Cricket Council mandated the use of neutral umpires in 2002, meaning English and Australian officials -- widely considered among the best in

the world -- cannot be part of the Ashes series. Pon-ting pointed to England’s Richard Kettleborough as a top umpire forced to miss out. “Surely Richard Kettleborough and the like would want to be umpir-ing the best series. The best umpires can end up missing out on all the big tournaments,” he said.

“It could force umpires into retirement a bit early as well when someone like (former Australian umpire) Simon Taufel is spending most of his life (overseas), which is a bit harder than spending your time in Aus-tralia.” Former Australia spinner Shane Warne, another member

of the MCC Cricket Com-mittee, also criticised the umpiring on day one of the Edgbaston Test, calling it “horrific”. “England are bowling very well. The um-piring has been horrific from

ball 1 & so has the reviews process of the right ones from Australia,” he said on Twitter. The MCC’s Cricket Committee,

guardians of the laws of the game, is an indepen-

dent body comprised of current and former players and umpires who meet twice

a year to discuss issues around the sport.

NEW DELHI: Indian spikers led by Hary-ana’s Amit Gulia will kick off their campaign in the Asian Men’s U-23 Volleyball Championship against China in Myanmar on Saturday. The tournament is an international vol-leyball competition in the Asia and Oceania region that is contested by 16 member nations of the Asian Vol-leyball Confederation (AVC). This is the third edition of the tournament which was held for the first time in 2015.

Iran, champions in 2015 and 2017, will not take part in this edition. The

nine-day event will culminate on August 11. All the matches will be held in the capital city of Nay Pyi Taw.

The 16 teams have been divided into four groups. India have been placed in Group D alongside China, Thailand and New Zea-land. After their match against China on the opening day, India will face New Zealand on August 4 and Thailand on August 5.

Coached by the experienced Pritam Singh Chauhan, the In-dia squad consists of Chirag, Ga-

gan Kumar and Shon T. John in the attacker’s position along with skipper Amit Gulia. Shikhar Singh and Sonu Kumar Jakhar will be handling the blocker’s duties for the team. Muthusamy and Saqlain Tariq are the two setters in the squad, while Hari Prasad is the sole libero in the team. The two universals in

the squad are Ash-win Raj and Himan-shu Tyagi. Ten out of the 12 players were part of the inaugu-

WASHINGTON: Three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray moved closer to a singles return six months after right hip surgery while Greece’s Ste-fanos Tsitsipas rolled into the world’s top five Friday at the ATP Washington Open.

Britain’s Murray and his brother Jamie, in their first doubles event since the 2016 Rio Olympics, lost to New Zealand’s Michael Venus and South African Raven Klaasen 6-7 (3/7), 7-6 (8/6), 10-7 in a quarter-final at the US Open tuneup event.

Murray has practiced singles this week to improve his conditioning

after the long layoff.“I feel fine,” Murray said. “Practice has been fine.

No issues physically. So progressing well.

Just keep practicing the next 10 days or so and see what hap- p e n s . ” Top seed Tsitsipas beat French 10th seed Benoit Paire 7-5, 6-0 to reach the semi-finals and ensure he will overtake Germany’s Alexander Zverev to crack the world rankings top five on Monday.

“Once you’re in a certain position

for a long time, you really crave for more,” Tsitsipas said.

“This one position difference might not feel a lot for some people but for me it really means a lot because there has been a lot of hard work behind it, just a lot of suffering in general.

“I feel I deserve this posi-tion. It means a lot

for sure.” The 2 0 - y e a r - o l d Australian Open semi-finalist, who lost to Zverev in last

year’s

Washington semis, booked a semi-final against Austra-

lia’s Nick Kyrgios, who ousted Slo-vakian lucky loser Norbert Gombos

6-3, 6-3. “I’m excited to play him,” Kyrgios said of Tsitsipas. “He’s one of the best players in

the world right now.” Murray, who feared his career might be

over after the January opera-tion, hasn’t played singles since the Australian Open but says he

might return at the ATP Cincinnati Masters starting August 12.“If I feel like I’m ready, I’ll give it

a go. If not, I’ll wait probably un-til after New York. But so far it has been fine.” PTI

As per experts, the symptoms of inherited metabolic disorders like Lysosomal Storage Dis-orders (LSDs) are often treated as more common illnesses and might ap-pear to be of only minor concern.

However, the symp-toms can vary from mild to severe depending on the age of disorder and onset. The length of time from symptom onset to an accurate diagnosis is be-tween two to five years for a rare disease. They can include developmental delay, movement disor-ders, seizures, dementia, deafness and/or blind-ness. Some of the LSDs are Pompe, Gaucher, Fabry and MPS-1.

Lysosomal Storage Disorders (LSDs) mostly affect children below the age of 5. Even adults can be affected by this condi-tion in some cases. Shar-

ing more information, Dr Inusha Panigrahi, Senior Geneticist and Professor in Genetic-Metabolic unit, Department of Pedi-atrics, PGIMER, Chandi-garh, said, “Patients suf-fering from rare diseases, especially Lysosomal Storage Disorders (LSDs), often lead a very inca-pacitating life. These are primarily caused due to deficient or dysfunctional enzymes. The disorders are often chronic and se-verely hamper the quality of life of a patient.”

Thus, it is necessary and important to gen-erate awareness among medical fraternity about rare diseases as a condi-tion. Enzyme Replace-ment Therapy (ERT) is available for more than a handful of disorders now; and as a treatment modality, has proved to

be effective and has had a positive impact on the life of many patients, added Dr Panigrahi.

In this view, the State Institute of Health and Family Welfare, Mohali with support from Lyso-somal Storage Disorders Support Society (LSDSS) recently organised the first Rare Disease Up-date programme to raise awareness about rare dis-eases. It addressed one of the most important challenges – awareness about rare diseases, and simultaneously unveiled Lysosomal Storage Dis-orders (LSDs) posters, in Punjabi and English languages. These post-ers will be disseminated officially through State Health Department Pun-jab at government medi-cal colleges and District Health Centers.

As a result, thousands of patients will be at the re-ceiving end due to the sus-pension of health services, in exception to emergency and ICU care.

The students have proclaimed that PU au-thorities are favouring the Students Centre’s shop owners by burdening stu-dents in order to maximise their profits.

As many as 50 saplings were planted in the area under the ‘Greening Chandigarh’ campaign undertaken by city based NGO’s on Sat-urday. The tree plantation drive was supported by the Chandigarh Administration and Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh.

As per the information, Dhanas was especially chosen for tree plantation because there are very less number of trees in this newly developed area. The area has one-room apart-ments, but has large families residing there, hence they

spend most of their spare time outdoor in these parks and there are hardly any trees there for shade.

Ram Chander Yadav, President of Seven Rays Foundation said, “Tree plantation is very impor-tant for the society and this initiative will go a long way in inculcating awareness among residents of Dhanas about environment conser-vation”.

Surinder Bahga, Chair-man, Saakaar Foundation, said, “Saakaar Foundation has always worked for con-servation of environment. We propagate sustainable ways in all our architec-tural projects. I am happy

to see the high enthusiasm exhibited by the local resi-dents who have come forth for the drive. We are taking a pledge not only to plant trees but also to nurture them”.

Various staff members of Foundations, family mem-bers and local residents ac-tively participated in the programme. Seven Rays Foundation is working for the betterment of society by organizing blood donation camps and other awareness programmes. On the other hand, Saakaar Foundation is actively engaged in Re-search and Studies of Built Environment. It is working to improve the living con-ditions of society in rural, semi urban and urban areas through the medium of ar-chitecture.
