Start Small and Grow Field Upgradeable

Unique Architecture Makes it Fastest at the Lowest Cost Half Rack Full Rack Quarter Rack Eighth Rack

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Exadata allows easy expansion within and between racks. A quarter rack can be upgraded to a half rack. A half rack can be upgraded to a full rack. Two half racks can also be connected together to form the equivalent of a full rack. This is sometimes useful in data centers with weight or heat density restrictions. Once a full rack is deployed it can be increased in half rack size increments. For example a full rack grows to 1.5 racks, then to 2 racks, then to 2.5 racks. Equipment can be mixed across hardware generations. For example a half rack can be grown to a full rack using the next generation of servers to fill out the rack.

Data Load Rate4 16 TB/hr 8 TB/hr 4 TB/hr 2 TB/hr 1 - Bandwidth is peak physical scan bandwidth achieved running SQL, assuming no compression. Effective data bandwidth will be much higher when compression is factored in. 2 - IOPS – Based on read IO requests of size 8K running SQL. Note that the IO size greatly effects flash IOPS. Others quote IOPS based on 2K, 4K or smaller IOs that are not relevant for databases. Exadata Flash read IOPS are so high they are typically limited by database server CPU, not IO. 3- Actual Performance varies by application. 4 – Exadata load rates are typically limited by database server CPU, not IO. Rates vary based on load method, indexes, data types, compression, and partitioning

Presentation Notes
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency (CBP) is a division of Homeland Security, chartered with monitoring and protecting the movement of passengers and cargo across the US border. Every time a passenger’s passport is swiped upon entering the country, Exadata is performing that database lookup. The combined activity amounts to over 30 billion database queries per day across dozens of Exadata systems. CBP began their data center conversion to Engineered Systems in 2010, with the purchase of a number of Exadata V2 Database Machines. Their Exadata portfolio as of the Summer of 2012 included more than two dozen V2, X2-2 and X2-8 Database Machines, along with Exalogic systems for application deployment. All production systems are paired with a standby Exadata system using Oracle Data Guard, as CBP must have near 100% availability, due to the time-critical nature of their mission. If a production system is down, goods and passengers may be prohibited from entering or leaving the country. Since converting their main database platforms to Exadata, CBP has reduced their associated capex and opex costs by 75%! Application performance has improved up to 10x, and uptime has averaged close to 100%. Ken Ritchhart, who manages the CBP IT operations, credits Exadata for changing the strategic focus of IT from building systems to developing critical application services.

Presentation Notes
Turkcell is the largest mobile phone operator in Turkey, with twice as many subscribers as the nearest competitor. In 2010, Turkcell’s business intelligence agility was throttled by the performance of its data warehouse platform. Using a large Unix SMP system and 10 racks of high-end storage, the average report took almost 30 minutes to complete, and 50,000 reports were being run monthly. That’s when Turkcell invested in a full rack Exadata Database Machine and, applying Exadata’s hybrid columnar compression, converted a 250 TB data warehouse into a 25 TB compressed data warehouse on Exadata, enjoying a 10x speedup in the average report, which completed in less than 3 minutes. In 2011, Turkcell decided to consolidate more databases onto Exadata, and invested in two full rack Exadata X2-2 systems, holding 600 TB of raw data compressed to 60 TB. The original Exadata system now holds 400 TB of raw data compressed to 40 TB, for a total of 1 Petabyte of raw data on Exadata. In addition to the 10x performance improvement in their reporting, Turkcell freed up 900 TB of tier-1 storage for other uses, reduced overall IT admin costs by 20%, and shrunk the footprint of their data center, including power consumption, by 80%.

“Oracle Exadata helped us meet our challenges by enabling us to consolidate to a single footprint.” - Ed Link, Vice-President IT, Garmin

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Garmin markets a diverse line of GPS-enabled handheld portable and fix-mounted products for the auto, mobile, outdoor, fitness, marine and aviation markets. Garmin uses a number of Oracle’s packaged applications, including Oracle E-Business Suite, Advanced Supply Chain Planning, and Oracle’s Hyperion for planning and reporting. Garmin also developed a custom application called Garmin Connect for tracking fitness workouts, a popular application with a rapidly growing user population and over 1 million accesses per day. Garmin chose two half-rack Exadata Database Machines in a prod/standby configuration to replace and consolidate 12 separate database servers that were previously on Sparc and Intel architectures. Both Exadata systems were augmented with additional memory expansion kits, and additional Exadata storage was added to the production system. Garmin needed to relieve the pressure on their systems due to inconsistent high-availability configurations and increasing user load. They wanted to simplify their environment by minimizing the number of vendors and systems. From a performance perspective, batch jobs, end of month processing, supply chain planning and MRP jobs were in need of relief, and after consolidating the 12 servers onto Exadata, Garmin experienced 2x to 11x faster month-end reports, and some jobs that ran over 35 minutes previously completed in less than 1 minute on Exadata. Additionally, the Garmin Connect application experienced a 4x increase in the number of page views from customers, reaching 750,000 pages per hour.

Presentation Notes
P&G has deployed three models of Exadata Database Machines; V2, X2-2 and X2-8 to support their multiple Data Warehouses and analytics applications. P&G outsources their data centers to HP and Oracle OnDemand remotely monitors and administers their Exadata systems. P&G’s goal with Exadata was to reduce the complexity of multiple vendors that led to higher costs, longer time to resolve support issues, and instability. P&G’s move to Exadata has improved the performance of their Data Warehouse queries, up to 30x faster in some cases, reduced storage consumption due to Oracle’s data compression, and eliminated significant overhead in resolving support issues, since only one vendor is now involved. Since Oracle support now has exactly the same configurations as P&G operates, analyzing issues and performing root cause analysis on problems is straightforward and quick, compared to the customer configurations that preceded Exadata at P&G, which were almost always different than the configurations support had available for diagnostics.

“[Beehive] is our largest application in-house. It is Oracle’s largest backend database.” - Campbell Webb, Vice-President IT, Oracle

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Oracle’s own Beehive collaboration application has run on Exadata since it debuted. Oracle Beehive is a centralized collaboration system for all Oracle employees, provided email, messaging, calendar management, conferencing, and document management services. The Exadata V1 storage servers supported Oracle Beehive prior to the Sun acquisition of 30,000 new employees. Due to the increased load after the acquisition of Sun and numerous other companies, the platform was upgraded to the Exadata X2-2 system in the summer of 2011. At that time, 9 full rack Exadata systems were interconnected to support a peak tps of over 5,000 and an average of over 1,500. Because Oracle Beehive is a fundamental system for every Oracle employee, high-availability is paramount, so a remote standby of identical configuration exists to support switchover/failover operations. Since going live, the X2-2 configuration supporting Beehive has been available 100%, and response time for emails and other operations has dramatically improved, by as much as 60x. The combined productivity boost for Oracle’s 100,000+ employees amounts to millions. In addition, the X2-2 configuration was sized to accommodate several years of anticipated growth and acquisitions.

faster backups – backup procedures could be simplified and backup time has been reduced by 80%

faster SQL queries – complex queries (such as target groups selections) could be accelerated by 40%-60%, and – as a main improvement - the system allows parallel processing of difficult queries without noticeable effect on the rest of the application

new options in our development – there is more space for data processing (data restructuring, including large temporary files) or for run time analysis of SQL statements, which was previously not possible due to massive impact on the rest of the application

single support contact – one support site for hardware, software and database instead of dealing with several vendors, no management of large inventories of hardware spare parts

Solution and Exadata Experience migration – we could migrate all 3 instances (one

by one) to the new system without any noticeable problems in a time comparable with same migration to another standard Oracle system

setup and operating – the split in system responsibility works exactly as communicated by Oracle – we keep the control on database level while the system level is completely managed by Oracle specialists

system availability – this issue has been solved automatically by internal system architecture, which implements an Oracle cluster with high level of redundancy in all hardware parts

system stability – has been significantly increased, which has significantly reduced our operation costs
