EDITORIAL

The beginning of September was marked by

some chocking and other triumphant

situations.

René, the featured animal of the month, was

found in an unreal and awful situation… she

was just left to die, covered with a shirt and

sand.

Many other animals were abandoned on the

street or near our shelter and our human and

physical ability became exhausted!

Unfortunately we are not able to attend every

call for help if we do not have enough

volunteers working actively.

EVENTS

The monthly walks of the group “Let's walk the dog” are already usual every first Saturday

of the month. Some volunteers are a constant presence at this activity but every month

the number of volunteers increases. On the last month several children participated. This

is a remarkable attitude of the future generation, notoriously more aware of the animal

welfare cause. For our dogs this is a moment of immense happiness! They know that they

are going to escape the daily routine and get lots of caress. During the walks we take the

chance to socialize some of our most frightened dogs trying to make them adoptable.

The dogs thank you! If you want to participate join us at the facebook group

But the month was long and lots of positive things happenned. We started

Elisa’s socialization. She is a dog living at our shelter for too long, and no one

“looked” at her yet. She is very shy and has to be socialized. This is a long and

time consuming work, but mostly necessary for her welfare and future

adoption.

As always we need dry food – for puppies and adults – and canned food.

If you want to be a volunteer come and meet us.

Help us in helping!

WE WERE ABANDONED.. .The abandonment of animals continues, and Association Bianca faced another month of

lots or abandonments and very special cases. These are the photos of the animals that, in

September arrived at Bianca.

These companions saw their lives changed by the cruelty of those for whom they

dedicated their lives. We hope that their stay at Bianca is short and happy!

We leave you with some lines from the Universal Declaration of Animal Rights:

- All animal life has the right to be respected;

- Human beings have the duty to place their conscience on the behalf of other animals;

- Every animal under the care of humans have the right for consideration, cure and

protection;

- Abandonment is a cruel and degrading act;

- Animal rights should be defended by laws, as it happens with the human rights.

If you can not adopt but want to help, know that you can foster. This way you may provide

some welfare to an animal.

R E N É

Jeremias is a very special cat! He arrived at

Bianca a few years ago in a terrible state,

severely wounded. We found that he was

allergic and that is his only problem.

Today he is much better and only needs to

be vaccinated every two months, eat a

special food and wear a collar so that he

does not scratch himself. Since he has been

with us that he lives in a temporary foster

family, but should have a real family.

His temporary family says that they have

never seen a sweeter and gentler cat. He

gets along with everyone and loves other

cats, especially kittens. His photos and

videos leave no space for doubts about his

sweetness. Watch him at our website. And,

by the way, adopt him!

René has one of the most baffling and surreal

stories we can remember. She was found by

chance by volunteers that saw three people

throwing something white on the floor and

covering it with a shirt and sand. When they

got closer they saw René! She was certainly

left there to die. She was in panic and tried to bite anyone

who touched her. She was taken to the vet immediately and

stayed there for observation. We could tell that she was blind

but didn’t know if it was reversible. Later it was found that

the situation was congenital and manageable. With the

proper treatment she recovered her sight and her

uncontrollable fear of people went gradually away. She just

realized that no one was going to harm her and was even able

to return the caress and ask to seat in our laps. She now loves

to be around people. Fortunately we found her a home in

record time. The volunteers that found her pressed charges to

the local authorities and the people who abandoned René

have been identified.

THE VOICE OF THE RADIO

http://bianca.pt/english | http://bianca-pet-rescue-adoption.blogspot.com

Another month of radio shows and new themes were

presented in order to raise public awareness of animal

welfare. In September themes like canine hyperactivity,

the arrival of a new family member, car travels with the

pets, vaccination, deworming, and the "Diary of a dog"

were presented. “Diary of a dog” is a text written by an

anonymous person that tells the story of a dog since his

arrival to the new home, with just a few weeks old, until

his abandonment and death. Sad, real and educational.

Other issues will be presented in the next shows that will certainly help you to better deal

with your pet.

We take this chance to congratulate our volunteer Sara Rafael as she was national

champion in K1 category of canoeing, and national vice-champion in K2 mixed double

category with her partner. Our sincere congratulations!

Every tuesday at 3:15 p.m. at SesimbraFM in the frequency of 103.9.

“Hello. My name is Teresa, I’m 55 years old and I have

worked at ‘Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa’. Now

I’m retired. All my life I had dogs and have always been

in love with animals and an advocate of animal rights.

At our home dogs have been a constant presence. First

there was Pierrot and afterwards we had Black, a

beautiful Cocker Spaniel. Nina who was at risk of being

abandoned also ended up at our home. Finally we had

Magali. She had a terminal tumour and because of that

I had to make de decision of putting her to sleep. This

was one of the hardest things I ever had to do.

I became a volunteer at Bianca mostly to mourn for

Magali. The first time I went to the shelter with my son

I could not enter, because I was crying so much.

One happy day I attended one of Bianca’s activities

and I met the shelter on the inside. I loved the way how

Mrs. Teresa Simões at the shelter

animals were treated with love and caress, and so I decided to become a volunteer. Now I

go there 3 to 4 days a week to help in everything necessary.

Everything I do, I do it with pleasure. For me it was a therapy and when I’m at the shelter

I feel GOOD. This is my way of contributing to the animal cause.

What I like about Bianca is that, although we fight against dificulties everyday, every

animal is cleaned, fed, cared for and loved by every volunteer. Animals are a part of the

family and as such I do not accept mistreatments and abondonments. I believe that

portuguese laws are very soft in these cases. Do not abandon or mistreat your best and

most faithful friend.”

Association Bianca thanks every volunteer that, with their sweat, time and will, help the

animal cause and provide welfare and happiness to the animals.

NEWS of the MONTH

On the 17th and 18th of September, Bianca

Association was at the surroundings of

Pingo Doce in Quinta do Conde, Sesimbra,

for another Cat adoption fair and

collection of food. In these couple days we

received tens of kilograms of food and

gave 7 cats for adoption, making the fair a

success. We take this chance to thank

Pingo Doce for receiving us and for

actively being a part of this fair.

Other similar events will happen in

October. On the 1st and 2nd we will be at

Jumbo Natureza in Almada and on the 15th

and 16th we will be again at Pingo Doce in

Quinta do Conde.

Show up and make your donation.

The restoration of the floors of the kennels

started in August and is already finished.

The volunteers made an exceptional work

in a record time. Every kennel that needed

restoration now look like new and are

ready to receive their inhabitants.

With the fall and winter arriving the old

kennel conditions made cleaning harder

and obviously reduced the quality of life

of the dogs.

This way we provided better conditions

and improved their quality of life while

they wait for a responsible adoption

I FOUND A HOME. . .

Association Bianca, since it’s beginning, promotes responsible

adoptions for the animals under its care. These friends were the

lucky ones of September.

Remember that adopting an animal should always be a conscious

and responsible act. Adoptions are for life and the only thing you

need to do is make your animal happy. They return with minimal

effort.

Be happy four legged friends!

If you have adopted one of our animals please feel free to tell us

how he has grown, what's his personality or even a small story

that you find particularly interesting.

If you send us photos we will publish them on our website and

social networks.

Contact us by e-mail for the address [email protected]!

This little kitten, with just 2 weeks old, was left in a box outside

Bianca’s shelter, during the night. He was found by one of the

volunteers in the morning, shivering and hungry. Kittens this size

are very fragile and shouldn’t be unattended. They depend on

constant care. During several days volunteers fed him and tried to

help him with their needs, but unfortunately it was too late. He

eventually died and we did not even had the time to name him. We

take this moment to pay him tribute.

Rest in peace little baby!

The introduction of a new dog at home

should be gradual and should, preferably,

occur in a neutral territory. Take your

older dog outside the house and introduce

him to the new element on the street. Let

them interact and then take both dogs

inside as if it was an extension to the

process of the new friendship.

Do not leave any object that might origin a

dispute like food or toys at their reach, at

least at the beginning.

Initially give priority to the older dog.

Make him feel like he did not lose his

position in the family: let him be the first

to receive caress, food, etc. Eventually they will establish their hierarchical position.

Remember that this position shoul be respected. And do not forget to neuter your

animals.
