Bible Bands
This year I am hoping to establish small group Bible Studies for everyone. This is
modeled after Jesus who invested time into about 12 people who would
change the world. This is so important that I would rather have you in a small
group Bible Study than at Sunday worship. John Wesley copied this model and
formed small Bands or Classes that would meet weekly, and Societies (several
Bands/Classes) that would meet monthly.
Why? Most growth does not happen by listening. It happens in
interaction. It happens when you make personal discoveries. The best field for
that is in small groups. I can tell you something is true, but if you discover for
yourself, it will make many times the impact of what you are told.
You can’t share your heart in Sunday worship but you can when you meet with a few friends, with the added benefit of
receiving prayer, too. This is where friendships are strengthened and gifts become evident, where weakness can be
shared and shored up by a loving community. The strength of the church is each other united in Christ.
Please pray about being in a Bible Study Group. Think about giving up about 1 hour a week for your Spiritual
enrichment and to build up the body of Christ. For those of you who travel, one benefit of COVID19 is that we have
become pretty good at connecting from afar. I encourage you not to discount being a part of a Bible Study Group just
because you’re in San Antonio, Minnesota, Alaska, or Canada.
The Bible Study will start with a study of the Gospel of Luke and continue into Acts to get a good sense of who Jesus is
and the working of the early church. I chose Luke, because it is by the same author as Acts and it gives a great early
church history.
Those of you already committed to Bible Study, would you pray for the establishment of these new Bible studies, and
consider becoming a facilitator for one of our small groups?
If you decide to try a group, think of 2 days that would work best for you, choosing between Wednesday, Thursday, or
Saturday. Why those days? Monday and Friday tend to have the most holiday interruptions.. I know Saturday is also
subject to interruptions, but I want to give an option to people who just can’t make it during the week. On Sunday and
Tuesday, we already have ongoing Bible Studies and I don’t want to interfere with those. Also, decide which meeting
time would work best for you - Morning, Noon or Evening. Groups will be formed according to day/time preferences.
Watch for our Bible Study survey form coming in the next few weeks, as well as information on how to sign up for a
class.
For the Kingdom of God on Earth as it is in Heaven,

allowing us to the time to re-assess our financial plan so we
can maintain good stewardship while not having to make rash
financial decisions.
As we journey through this new season of unrest, we are still
an essential part of the work of Christ in our community. The
ministries of FUMC Rockport are supported by the generosity
of members, constituents and visitors alike.
Another large portion of support is by our Castaways
Volunteer Team who serve at Castaways. However, with that
agency being closed due to COVID19 we will be missing vital
income to carry us through.
The church applied for the Paycheck Protection Loan offered
by the Federal Government and was funded on April 24, 2020.
Those funds will help cover payroll & utility costs for 8 weeks
and the loan will be forgiven if supported appropriately.
We ask you to please keep your church and your church staff
in your prayers and consider how you can answer God’s call to
stewardship of your prayers, presence, gifts, service and
witness. Our church and community are blessed by all you
have to offer. If you are traveling, you can go to our church

BENEVOLENT BUCKET
Benevolent Bucket is a special offering taken up on the first Sundays of each month. However, we will move this month’s bucket to be when we next gather in person and have communion, date to be determined.
Next Benevolent Bucket will benefit UMCOR, United Methodist Committee on Relief. This mission ministry has been heavily involved in our own recovery from Hurricane Harvey but also work recovery in so many areas around our country and the world. UMCOR Sunday was officially March 22nd but we can still support this ministry today and send gifts and prayers of thankfulness for those who are able to be the hands and feet of Christ in our World! Please make your check out to FUMC Rockport and note “UMCOR” on memo line.

Plain Talk About Our Finances
June 24, 2020 Our finances have been hit hard by the effects of the coronavirus shutdown. And this adversity is on the heels of a not quite complete recovery from Hurricane Harvey, which had already contributed greatly to several years of losses in income and cash. The “bottom line” is we are losing money every month and quickly depleting our cash reserves. The Bad News:
At the beginning of this year, we had a total of $156,047 in cash and liquid assets. As of June 21, those funds had been reduced to $61,424 (a reduction of $94,623). An additional $37,935 of cash would have been used to make mortgage payments on our First Learning
Tree building if the lender had not agreed to defer three months of payments in anticipation of the adverse impact of the virus. Making the deferred payments would have reduced our cash to $23,489.
Some Good News:
Because of the virus, we were able to obtain what amounts to a government grant of $171,500 to pay payroll and certain other costs for about an 8-week period. Adding those funds brings our total cash at June 21 to $232,924. (All of the grant funds will be spent by the end of July or early August.)
We are working to refinance the FLT mortgage to reduce the monthly payment.
How We Got Here: With no in-person services, and consequently, no taking of an offering as part of our worship, donations are down sharply from what they were prior to the shutdown. But our operating expenses, which have been tightly controlled for a long time, have diminished only slightly. Castaways was also shut down, and we have not been receiving the $8,000+ monthly contribution from Castaways to which we have been accustomed. (Castaways has now reopened, and we will begin receiving an undetermined amount of contributions from it.) Also, FLT, the wonderful preschool and after-school program that serves as a ministry to our community, has been adversely impacted by a significant reduction in attendance, and therefore in revenues. For many years, FLT was self-supporting, but in these difficult times, it has incurred losses that must be covered by church resources. (FLT is part of the church organization and is not a separate entity.) What Can We Do? If we cannot increase our income significantly, losses will continue, and our cash reserves might well be depleted before year-end. Not only could we not support the wonderful and inspiring ministries of our church, we would not be able to pay our bills. So, we are asking each member, each congregant, to consider prayerfully what your financial commitment to the church will be. If you made a pledge last year, are you current in keeping it? If not, will you be able to bring your giving up to date? If you are current on your pledge, will you be able to give something extra to help improve our situation? If you didn’t make a pledge, would you consider making one now (to yourself and to God, if not formally to the church) and make committed donations according to your pledge? FUMC Rockport is blessed to have caring members who have always responded positively when called upon in times of need. Praise be to God for His many blessings.
Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of
first fruits of all he created.” James 1:17-18
Everything we have comes from God.

COVID-19 and First Learning Tree Update from Pastor Frank
Hi Church,
We had a child at our Preschool, First Learning Tree (FLT), test Positive for
COVID19. We were notified late Friday, June 19th. This child had not been at
FLT since June 12th. Because the child’s grandmother was sick, FLT had
requested the child be kept at home. We do not believe that there was any
transmission to others because it would have been in a very early stage of
infection. If there had been transmission, it would have been at least 10 days
prior to the date of our notification.
The preschool director called all parents the Friday that she was notified, and spoke with everyone to address
concerns. As you can imagine, she spent a lot of time on the phone with concerned parents that evening. At
the time I am writing this (Monday, June 22), most kids are back in school. A few FLT staff and some
students elected to stay home for a few days.
At the time we were notified, we contacted Center for Disease Control (CDC), State Preschool licensing, and
the Health Department. The CDC advised that children showing symptoms needed to get tested, but did not
mandate all children in the class be tested. They did not seem very concerned, as the child had not been
present for 7 days already. Parents may decide to have their children tested, and information about free
testing in Corpus was given to them.
I initially thought that we should test everyone at FLT after a positive confirmed case. After consideration, for
the foreseeable future, I was concerned that we would end up testing every week . With our number of
students and staff, we would take all the available slots of two testing facilities to test, so I don’t think this is a
feasible option.
So for now we will continue to use the highest safety measures available to us:
All staff and children with family members with symptoms in the home, must stay home.
Anyone showing symptoms is sent home.
We screen everyone’s temperature outside before entering the building.
Only children and staff are allowed inside
We sanitize rooms and toys daily.
Wash hands often, and help kids wash often.
And please Pray daily for FLT Staff and Children
I have requested policy updates from the RioTexas Conference, in case we have missed anything. We are
consulting with health officials and asking expert advice. We are being as transparent as possible, to church
board, FLT Staff and Parents. Things may change as we get new information, but we are going by what we
have now.
For God and Country,
Pastor Frank Baik

COVID-19. We are saturated with news of statistics and spread. We are hearing so much about the increase of cases at this time. We have been told to wear masks to protect others in the event we are the carrier of the virus, and unaware
of our possible exposure. I wanted to share with everyone what I read about wearing of the cloth face mask for the general public that is from the Mayo Clinic.
Cloth Face Masks: Asking everyone to wear cloth masks can help reduce the spread of the coronavirus by people who have COVID-19 but don't realize it. And countries that required face masks, testing, isolation and social distancing early in the pandemic seem to have had some success slowing the spread of the virus. How to wear a cloth face mask Cloth face masks should be worn in public settings where social distancing measures are difficult to maintain, such as in grocery stores, especially in areas of significant community-based transmission. Here are a few pointers for putting on and taking off a cloth mask:
Place your mask over your mouth and nose.
Tie it behind your head or use ear loops and make sure it's snug.
Don't touch your mask while wearing it.
If you accidentally touch your mask, wash or sanitize your hands.
Remove the mask by untying it or lifting off the ear loops without touching the front of the mask or your face.
Wash your hands immediately after removing your mask. Regularly wash your mask with soap and water in the washing machine. It's fine to launder it with other clothes. Cloth masks are cheap and simple to make. Instructions are easy to find online. If you need a cloth mask, please call the church office, we will make sure to get you one. We are all called to do our part in preventing the spread of COVID 19. Make your mask a part of your personality (see picture, right). We can make others smile –behind that mask—as we see the light in their eyes. Stay healthy, wear your mask, and wash your hands. Looking forward to the time when we can all be together again in our new normal. Blessings, Kathy Wilson, RN Wesley Nurse P.S.: Just a reminder: Now that the church is back open I wanted to be sure to let everyone know, even though there are not any programs, classes, or Lunch and Learns happening right now with the Wesley Nurse Program, I’m still available by phone and/or email just to chat, catch up, or talk about any questions you may have. Once Methodist Healthcare Ministries allows me to return to my office at the church, I will be there. So looking forward to that time when we can see one another again, in our new normal, smiling behind a mask, and following guidelines to keep us healthy and whole.

Worship Whipped by Weather
Well...drive-in service did not work out as hoped or expected. And most of you know that we are back worshiping in the sanctuary.
After fighting wind, rain, and sun, we took the hint. We have a building for a reason, and we ought to use it. After two Sundays back we have a group of less than 30 in church, and many more online. Thank you for your participation and great love for one another.
Worshipers in church are asked to wear a mask to protect one another and refrain from hugs and handshakes. You can show love for one another by respecting distance, and caring for one another’s health and safety. Thank you for adapting to the circumstances.
We may soon see singing again in churches. There was a great scare and assumptions made at first when choirs got sick; but studies now show that those choirs probably had other factors that made them sick. When measuring droplet projection in singing, it was found that droplets travel less than 2 feet. Singing beyond that range did not present danger of transmission, regardless of volume or pitch.
This is great news for the church. If we are properly spaced, we are probably okay to sing again. Hallelujah! Blessings, Pastor Frank

What Must We Do to be Saved?
These are difficult times for many people, and as a church we are reflecting that reality. We praise God for the PPP
loan and the deferral of our mortgage payments for three months. These stop-gap measures have really given us time
to adjust to the economic disaster that the world is facing. We also praise God for many who have donated generously
to help us through a time of reduced worship attendance and offerings.
The finance team has looked and relooked at the budget to make cuts, and done everything they could, and we
continue to review the budget regularly.
In June we refinanced the Market Street property, lowering the interest rate by 2%, and making our payments much
more manageable. Our hope is that the property will now generate rental income instead of creating a monthly
shortfall. We are also in the process of refinancing the First Learning Tree building, and anticipate saving a bundle
there too.
At this point I am insisting on a reduction in the Pastor’s salary next year, and am considering reducing hours for staff.
We love our people and think the world of them, but at this critical juncture, we are not looking at individuals, but the
survival of the whole organization. I anticipate that the economy will improve in time, and people will come back to
church, but we need to tighten the belt and ensure the future of FUMC Rockport. For now we are looking to shrink our
paid staff with the economy.
What can you do?
Pray for God’s provision for the church. God has more than enough and is able to provide.
Invite a friend to join us online or in person. Growing the church will help sustain it in the future.
Give generously, the standard set by Abraham is 10% of your increase. I don’t expect people to give more than
that to the church, but I do call all saints to offer all they are to the Lord. That goes far beyond a monetary gift. It
means praying, “Lord have all of me.”
Serve the church. As we reduce staff hours, we will need volunteers to help fill the gaps. We would love to have
you serve the Lord. We are learning to do church differently. We don’t even know what we need. What talent
would you like to bring to serve the Lord?
Thank you in advance for your prayers, witness, gifts, and service to the Lord. The Lord give you a great return on your
prayers and labors.
Through Christ our Lord,
Pastor Frank

CASTAWAYS THRIFT SHOP
The nice donations you have been delivering to Castaways for us to prepare for sale are very much appreciated. We had an excellent reopening week and your items were essential for us to be successful. Would you like to help further? We are looking for a person to sack merchandise for customers during the last shift, from 1-3 pm on Thursdays. We also need one or two more people to work from 2-3:30 to straighten the store and prepare it for the next day. We can always use another cashier, so if you are quick and efficient, we could surely use your skills. On Wednesdays from 9-11 am, if you prefer a sit-down job, we would like to train you to price merchandise. Come by and visit and select a position. Thank you for considering helping with this important outreach for FUMC. Annette Hegen
CARING CARDS VOLUNTEER NEEDED
The Caring Cards Ministry needs volunteers to write notes, as Lynne Ruf will be involved in a different area of church ministry.
We are well stocked with beautiful handmade cards to send for birthdays and anniversaries. Most of our card makers prefer making them at home where they have access to their materials and equipment.
Please consider participating in this important “connection” that bonds our church family together.
If you have questions please call Lynne Ruf at 361-816-5912 .
TECHNOLOGY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Are you technologically inclined? We’re seeking volunteers who can help with some of our church communications:
Create PowerPoint Slides of the prayers and announcements for worship
Help with sending out email communications sent via Mailchimp.
Help with updating content on the church website.
Training Day: July 7 @ 2 PM in the Rec Rm.
If you are technologically inclined and willing to help the church with any of these communications pieces, please contact Pastor Frank or Stefany Simmons.
PRAYER TEAM The Church would like to give a special thank you to Ruth Crough for her many years of faithful service as the leader of our Prayer Team. We so appreciate the time and effort Ruth has given.
The Prayer Team will resume on Tuesdays starting July 21st at 10:30 AM.
We will be meeting in Fellowship Room #3, so that we may “distance” and follow precautions .
Prayer Group is a very vital part of our Church Family. It keeps us connected. If you are able to read out loud you are more than equipped to participate. If you have any questions please contact Lynne Ruf 361-816-5912

This month Karen has reminded me several times that I need to get my newsletter article in. I must
admit, I have total writer’s block this month. I mean, there just really isn’t a whole lot going on in the
music department.
Let me take that back. The Praise Band is still meeting every week. This has become the highlight of
my week! I look back to where this group was when we began in November, the transformation has
been amazing. I don’t think, however, that we’re done growing. If you know of anyone that plays
guitar, drums or bass guitar, we would love to have them join us. That would fill out the group, and
we’d be able to do so much more! Please reach out to me if you know of anyone, or if you’re
interested in playing with us.
As a member of the Fellowship of United Methodist in Music and Worship, I receive a weekly devotion. Sometimes
these devotions are particularly poignant. This one, although it’s a few months old, still feels very relevant today.
"And he said to them, 'What are you discussing with each other while you walk along?' They stood still, looking sad.
Then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered him, 'Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who does not
know the things that have taken place there in these days?'" (Luke 24:17-18, NRSV)
I don't want to assume what your life has been like the last several weeks (though I have a pretty good hunch), but for
me, it's been a weird, surreal, painful, confusing, and really, really strange Lent and Easter. Many of my friends and
colleagues have not been able to celebrate worship in person for weeks. Many have had to cancel concerts, recitals, art
shows, outreach events, and Holy Week series that have been in the works since well before Christmas. Does that
include you? It includes me, and it's heartbreaking.
I don't feel like it's Eastertide. I'm not yet ready to believe the Resurrection story. I'm on the road to Emmaus, traveling
with one companion (six feet apart, obviously). I'm standing still, looking sad. Where to begin, Jesus? My artistic designs
were dumped in the trash. My folk band rehearsals, my dance classes, my altarscapes, my Easter lily orders ... don't
you get it, Jesus?
And Jesus says, "Oh, I do get it. I'm here. I'm on the road with you. I'm leading you toward bread and juice. I'm leading
you toward new kinds of community and ministry. I'm with you in the grief. And I'm leading you toward a new kind of
Eastertide."
May we take all the time we need to stand still, looking sad. May we also experience the risen Christ speaking to us,
side-by-side with us, through it all.
Prayer: God of Eastertide, help us grapple with our stories of both grief and resurrection. Help us hear your
voice on the road. Help us find new life again. Amen and amen.

Warning! Be careful what you ask for!!!
At our Praise Service on June 10th, Pastor Frank challenged us
to start praying two prayers every day.
1) Lord, use me as you desire today
2) Lord, bring ______ to faith in you
I starting praying these two prayers, and I have to tell you that
#1 needs a disclaimer with it. (WARNING: If you pray this
prayer, get ready to be busy!) Since I started praying that
prayer, God has used me in ways I never could have imagined.
Give a ride to a homeless mom with her two boys and
help get their Jeep to the shop
Brought a neighbor to art camp along with my kids
Wrote 15 notes of encouragement to folks
Engaged 4 volunteers to help with BOLT VBS
Woke several times in the middle of the night and prayed
Finally started going back to the gym
Received funds that were unexpected but needed
Recruited 2 volunteers to help with the church website
There is more… so much more
I share these things not to brag about my accomplishments,
but to brag what God has been doing. I would not have done
these things on my own! It was only through Christ’s power
and strength in me, and my willingness to be used by Him, that
all of these things took place.
While God uses you, it’s incredible how He also provides
everything you need and so much more. It is mind-boggling to
me how He redeems my time and helps me to get so much
more accomplished in a day than I ever would on my own.
Case in point- I woke up early last Thursday morning (like
5:00am), and God gave me the words to write this article. If I
had gone back to sleep, it would have taken me much longer!
This is a choice made not once but many times throughout
each day.
Are you open to God using you today, for His glory?
Are you open to letting God use you, even if it’s not
convenient?
I can tell you that if you do, you will be blessed beyond
measure. Words cannot express the joy and gratitude I feel
being God’s instrument. When you make yourself available to
Him, you walk in His spirit. In that process, He fills you with the
fruits of the spirit.
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance,
kindness, goodness, faithfulness,”
Galatians 5:22
Blessings Always,

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF FIRST LEARNING TREE
Sacrifice and Love
Lately we have had to question the “law of liberty” and what it means. The United States of America was founded for freedom. Looking back through American history, we can see what it took to obtain that freedom. If you sum it all up, it took sacrifice and love. This reminds me of the ultimate freedom given through Jesus Christ. Jesus came that we “might have life, and have it more abundantly” John 10:10. The freedom He gave us was also done with sacrifice and love. Freedom through Christ comes when we give it all to Him. He carried the cross, so we don’t have to. No matter who you are, you can have freedom through Jesus Christ.
“The joy of the Lord is our strength”
Nehemiah 8:10.
God bless,
Madaline Brown

Mike Peters’ family has sent the church copies of his newly-published book, Virgil. As many of you remember, Mike was involved in Prayer Team, Community Table, and numerous other church activities. Several of you were also involved in the editing process of writing this book. If you are interested, copies of the book are in the church library and can be checked out.
On June 6th, several of our awesome 6th-12th graders came together to help clean up Hurricane Harvey debris in the yard of one of our Food Drive recipients! She was so thankful and delighted to receive this help! Thank you guys! You’re AWESOME!
A special thanks to Jeannie Coe and Gracie Simmons for leading the project!
