by Fran ErrotaAll those well meaning persons sending materials to this reporter should

take into consideration the deadlines instead of having in mind only the date onwhichthe issue is in the mail. All personnel on Track & Field News and relatedpublicationsappreciate the work of all the correspondents and especially thoseof youwhotake the time to send us clippings, write letters etc. , but it seemstoo manyexpect miracles. Deadlines must be met a week before publicationdates, meaning all copy must be in the hands of those putting together the publiIcationat headquarters in Los Altos. One must think of the time it takes to pre-

,.pare the copy and also that time it takes to reach headquarters. The mails are:notalways the most reliable where time is concerned and that factor should alsobe considered although in our case it is not offered as an excuse as we are with;indriving distance. We are often asked why certain materials did not get intoprint in the previous issue. More often than not it was because the materials~rrived, the day of publication, or as so often is the case, a day after, We donotwish to discourage anyone from sending reports, they are most welcome, weonlywish to point out the problems we face when those clippings and reportsreach us so close to deadline, or in many instances, after our deadline.

Tennessee has more than Darwin Bond(Dobyns-Bennettof Kingsport) to)ffer. Darwin featured the Tennessee State meet in Knoxville with a blistering46.9 for the 440, but he fell victim to Clifton Taylor (Memphis Southside) in the'00, both doing 9. 7 but Taylor gaining the decision. Clifton also took the 220121.6 and anchored the 880 relay team to victory in 1:28.2. The Southside 440~layunit won without him in 42. 5 and won the team title with 48 points to 45 formdand his mates. ,. Some dandy races are shaping up on the eastern seaboard, not there, perhaps at the Golden West Invitational June 20 in Sacramento. Los Altos is the home of Track & Field News and also a high school witha remarkable tradition in the sport.

Many outstanding athletes, particularly weightmen and middle distancerunners, have come out of the school that has won 12 of the past 13 league (Santa Clara Valley Athletic League) championships and has won all but three dualmeets during that stretch.

Los Altos has also come with two national record holders in the discusincluding Chris Adams whose 201'0" toss will apparently be recognized as thestandard now that George Amundson's 211'4" throw of last year has been ruledto have beer. thrown on a sloping surface. Adams has taken the record awayfrom Kelvin Korver (Irving, Tex) , whose 197'3" toss in 1967had bettered the195'4" national standard by Bob Stoecker of Los Altos who competed in 1962.

Adams, however, is just one of two super stars on the present team.Rick Brown is the other, and just as Adams rates as the best in a long line oftop weightmen developed at the school, Brownis the best of a long line of tophalf-milers to represent Los Altos.

Brown, in fact, turned in the best 440-880 double in prep annals in hisleague finals May 15 when he clocked 1:51. 7 and 47.3. He topped off his eveningwith an anchor leg on the mile relay of about 47. O. His team did 3:17.2 withoutJim Andrew; a 48.4 runner. Brownhad earlier long jumped 21'9!" for thirdplace. TIle following week he lowered his best in the quarter to 47. 2.

Going into their Section finals, Adams had bests of 201'0" and 62'9!" inthe weights and Brownhad the 1:51. 7 and 47. 2 clockings and the pair gave LosAltos high hopes of annexing the California State crown at Berkeley, June 5 and 6.

It was not certain that Brownwould attempt the difficult 440- 880double,but if he drops out of the latter the mile relay team (whose 3:17.2 was a statebest at presstime) figured to qualify.

Besides the Adams & Browncombine, Los Altos also had Larry Davis(1:53.3n and 47. 7r) and Andrew (48.4) who figured to make the finals. BobThompson probably will join Brown, Davis and Andrew on the mile relay unit.

All this talent follows national class competitors developed by coachesLeo Long, Floyd Strain, Dave Maggard and Del Dequine.

\ Long returned to Los Altos this year where he has a team with its bestchance to win its first state crown. Himself a great javelin thrower during hiscollegiate days at Stanford, Long has had unusual success through his positiveapproach. Among the top weightmen to represent Los Altos have been Stoecker,Max Leetzow, Randy Schneider, Dave Zagar, Ed Forrest, Chuck Smart, SteveDavis, and now Adams. Middle distance toppers before Brownand Davis included Robin Ruble, Dave Boore, Dale Bennett and Paul Graham along with 440sprint type runners Bill Chapman, and Brad Lyman.

I Prep Round~ ~rck Shepard I

New national records in 1970 in the triple jump and 440 relay seemedstrong probabilities after the 1969 performances of Dave Tucker and tile alljunior team from Lincoln High of Dallas. Despite a year's advanced warning, fans still regarded the new bests by both as shockers.

Tucker, a junior from San Joaquin Memorial in Fresno, Calif., wrapped up T&FN's Prep Athlete of the Year honors with a nifty 52'6i" triple jump--which bettered ti18 old mark by over 10 inches and made him the only prepever to jump beyond 52-feet. ,That might have sufficed to aJll1ex the topati11ete honor for the 6'1", 182-lb. jumping-jack but he iced the cake at thenational AAU meet with a fourth-place leap of 51'1". And, remember, hestill has his senior year left.

Lincoln's 40.7 in 1969 (another national mark of course) was the onlyprep time ever under 41. O. But the unit's 40.2 borders on the incredible. However, it shouldn't be that surprisingnespecially when you recall timt theteam of John Delley, Rufus Shaw and tbe Pouncy twins Gene and Joe has runtogetiler for three years, that Gene led the nation's prep 100 -yard men in1970 with 9.4 and won the Texas state title and that Joe took the Texas state220 and had a best of 21. 2. As if that 40.2 wasn't enough. Bennie Medlockstepped in for Delley and this foursome rocketed to a 3:12.2 mile relay-third -fastest ever among preps - -the same afternoon.

Two of the nation's most outstanding preps paced Los Altos High tothe California state title with record-smashing efforts. Chris Adams spunthe prep discus 201 '3" to add three-inches to his own national best (GeorgeAmundson's 211'4" of 1969 was found to have landed on a sloping field). Talented Rick Brown locked up T&FN's Prep Runner of the Year honors with, among other things, a 47.8-1:50.6 440-880 double at the California state meet--tile first ever achieved in that meet. He capped a sterling day off with a46.5 anchor leg on his 3:15.6 mile relay team. And that double victory camewithin 65 minutes. Such superior double efforts became Brown's trademarkduring tile season; probably his finest a 24-minute effort of 1:50.7-47.1.

The two remaining national records both came in the summer. AlvinJackson turned in what was rated as the outstanding prep performance of theseason with a 16-lb. hammer toss of 180'0"--a prep record by 6'1", a sophomore class record, an international age-15 mark and well ahead of the juniorclass and global age-16 bests. Plus Jackson also produced age-15 and sophclass bests Witil the international discus of 142'0". Not bad throwing for theblack 6'2", 200-lber. from Classical High in Providence, Rl. DistancemanPat Mandera (Morton East, Cicero, Ill) claimed the final mark as he toured3000-meters in 8:33.0 while visiting West Germany.

Probably the most spectacular record of all, though, will never getinto the books because of a technicality. Jesse Stuart (Glasgow, Ky) uppedthe indoor shot record by over four-feet to 71' 11" but turned 19 and ineligiblein March. Reduced to exhibition appearances, he still popped a sensational73'11~" in. April--a hefty 1'8?;" over the prep record.

Up and down the line in 1970, there was excitement in all events butthe distances from the 880 to two-mile produced a good deal of the fireworks.Easterners Tony Colon (Power, NYC) and Joe Savage (Catholic, Roselle, NJ)clashed numerous times and each finished the year a national leader , Colon

with his 4: 06. 0 mile and Savage with a 1:50.2 half -mile. Another versatile'easterner was Bob Wheeler (Dulaney, Lutherville-Timonium, Md) who clocked 1:50.6 and 4:06.6--after a record 1:10.7600 indoors. Kevin Reabe (Waterford-Kettering, Drayton Plains, Mich) took Savage's measure at the GoldenWest, however, for a 1:50.6 victory, while Colon had to come up with his4: 06.0 to top surprising Kurt Mench (Castle, Kanehoe, Hawaii) by three-tenths.

Pacing the two-milers was Mike Keogh (Essex Cathloic, Newark, NJ)who copped the Golden West with a brilliant 8:54. O. His heir-apparent for1971 should be David Merrkk (Lincoln -Way, New Lenox, Ill) who clocked8:56.6 (plus a 4:10.9). Quickest Californian was Ron Johnson (West, Torrance) who took the state title with a swift 8:55.6. The longer distancessaw numerous age and class marks fall- -often by freshmen and sophomores.Sophs Mike Butynes (Sterling, Somerdale, NJ) and Mike Gilleran (Seaholm,Birmingham, Mich) claimed class marks--Butynes a 14:20.0 three-mile andGilleran a 15: 15.2 5000-meters. Darrell Hatfield (Rancho Alamitos, GardenGrove, Calif) turned in frosh marks of 32:28.6 for six-miles, 33:38,6 for10, OOO-meters and 10 miles, 1440 yards for an hour, while 14-year-oldfrosh John Weston (Edison, Fountain Valley, Calif) claimed age marks for5000-meters (16:50.0), 10, OOO-meters (35:24.0) and age and class marksfor the steeplechase (10:16.2). Edward Camacho (Meller Jr, Pica Rivera,Calif) is the new age-14 one-hour claimant (10m, 797y\. Just as impressivewas 14-year-old frosh Craig Virgin (Lebanon, Ill) with his 19-second reduction of the two -mile mark to 9:32. O.

In addition to the Pouncys, Florida's Ray Robinson (Lakeland) was asprint stand -out with four 9, 5s and two 21. Is before windy Golden West winsof 9.2 and 20.7. A great triple threat was Darwin Bond (Dobyns-Bennett,Kingsport, Tenn) who scooted 9.5 and nation -leading marks of 21.1 and 46.9.Tops among hurdlers was Fred Singleton (Mt Vernon, NY) who won everything in sight, topped by windy GWI triumphs of 13.4 and 18. 3t. Randy Lightfoot (Plainview, Tex) bears watching in 1971 off his 13.5 of 1970, the year'sfastest and just a tenth off the national mark. Other barrier barons wereMilt Turner (Castlemont, Oakland, Calif) at 13.7 and 18.3 and Gary West(Permian, Odessa, Tex) with 13.6, 18.7st and 37.2. Kevin Bligh (Herricks,New Hyde Park, NY) topped the long hurdles with 37.1 and 53.9 while thesoph 330 barrier mark fell to tile 38.3 of Allen Misher (Lincoln, Houston).

Field eventers also clamored for recognition--and rightfully so.Jerry Culp (Oceanside, Calif) cleared seven-feet three times in the high jumpand twice topped 7'i". Class bests went to so ph Dennis DeLoach (Irvin, ElPaso, Tex) at 6'10" and Raymond Guice (McLoughlin Jr, Pasco, Wash) at6 '6". In all, 41 jumpers cleared 6 '8" during the year. Multi °talented GeneWhite (Bristol, Pa) exerted himself impressively in three events and produced quality marks of 25'0" (25'4i"w), 6'9" and 49'1~" (50'~"w). In thetriple jump, Tucker won't be able to rest easy with his main rival of 1970returning. Randy Williams (Edison, Fresno) traveled 50'11~" last year plus25 '0" in the long jump.

Another explosi ve duel shapes up in the javelin between Craig Stiles(Malta, Mont) and Richard George (Millard, Fillmore, Utah). Stiles finallyannexed the junior class record last season with 244' 10" while George reached 241'1". In the hammer, Alvin Jackson's home of Providence, RI, produced another record setter in Anthony Strackaluse (Deaf School) who collected the frosh best with a 182'4" heave.

So, like last year, there was plenty of warning in 1970 that 1971 couldproduce some truly fantastic prep performances. And no telling wh,lt othersurprises are in store from athletes you may not have even heard of in 1970.
