  • Genesis 2:16-17 (KJV) 16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: 17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatestthereof thou shalt surely die.

Genesis 3:2-3 (KJV) 2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: 3 But of the fruit of the tree which isin the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.

Genesis 3:1 (KJV) 1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

How the first sin started:1. God is questioned. 2. God is misquoted (add, subtract).

  • “The ‘science delusion’ is the believe that science already understands the

nature of reality in principle, leaving only the

details to be filled in.”- Rupert Sheldrake

  • The “Science Delusion” challenges 10 assumptions / dogmas that rule the modern scientific paradigm:

    1. Nature is mechanical, or machine-like.2. Matter is unconscious.3. The laws of nature are fixed.4. The total amount of matter and energy is always the same.5. Nature is purposeless.6. Biological heredity is material.7. Memories are stored in your brain as material traces.8. Your mind is inside your head.9. Psychic phenomenon like telepathy are impossible.10. Mechanistic medicine is the only kind that really works.

  • In Christianity, we have a “theology delusion.”

The “theology delusion” is the belief that theology already understands the nature of God and reality in principle, leaving only the details to be filled in.

  • 1.Evangelism2.Revival3.Education4.Culture5.Apostasy

John 1:12-13 (KJV) 12 But as many as (1) received him, to them gave he power to (2) become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

John 10:38 (KJV) 38 But if I do,

though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in

    me, and I in him.

  • In Christianity, we have a “theology delusion.”

Seminary graduates come away with tons of baggage full of background theological information that forms its own construct or system. Scripture is then treated as nothing more than a glossary or index to be used in support of that system when required.

  • When we add and subtract from scripture

    • When we subconsciously have it conform to the system or consensus of theology we already perceive

    • When we need a “proof” for something we already believe• Theologically advantageous to our biases for

passages to read a certain way• When we trust our favorite celebrity/professor/idol

without checking them against scriptureGoogle Hangout clown

  • Conscious reasoning is always post hoc justification until intuitions are checked.

Jonathan Haidt and his collaborators have defended the “Social Intuitionist Model” (SIM)

of moral judgment. According to the SIM, moral judgments are initially the product of

non-conscious automatic intuitive processing. Conscious reasoning then takes place and is typically occupied by the task of justifying

whatever intuitions happen to be presented to the consciousness in a biased, non-truth-

    seeking way.

“Reason is a servant of the intuitions.”

  • Conscious reasoning is always post hoc justification until intuitions are checked.

“…it is a mistake to even raise that emotionally powerful question until we’ve calmed our

[intuitions] and cultivated some understanding of what such moralities are

trying to accomplish. It’s just too easy for our riders to build a case against every morality,

political party, and religion that we don’t like. So let’s try to understand moral diversity first,

    before we judge other moralities.”

  • In theology, our conscious reasoning will very easily find good reasons to justify and build a case for the theological conclusions toward which we are already biased. Our reasoning is NEVER an unbiased, sterile tool at our disposal. It is the unashamed “press secretary” of our theological intuitions, which are subject to extreme bias and can be very misleading. These theological intuitions must be calmed down and checked before reason can be of

any service at all to us in our search for scriptural truth. Adding and subtracting words from scripture are very good indicators that our “reasoning”

is merely serving our biases, rather than helping us forge an unfettered path to truth and sound doctrine.

Quantity of education does not help solve this problem. It merely complicates it. It only further equips the person to generate more convincing arguments on behalf of their pre-

existing or intuitive biases. For example, mastery of “Greek” only gives the theological student another playground

where his reasoning can more convincingly serve his theological biases. Thus, education is more often a hindrance to a person’s ability to discover objective truth, since it merely

equips their mind to fool them more convincingly that their findings are objectively sound. Therefore, if we want our educational process to be of value, we must correct for this

    problem as we go.

  • Remedy the Post-hoc justification problem

    • The inductive method (see video #1) is the remedy to this problem.Start with scripture being applied to a mind that is a blank slate.• Start as a disinterested third party with no interest at all in any modern-day

application or doctrine. Approach as if not “on a team.” • Observe and interpret with the then-and-there in the mental forefront,

bearing in mind basic principles of interpretation that keep your personal interests separated from the text (at first)o law of non-contradictiono things different are not the sameo original intento key event sequencing

    • If scripture was not viewed as a religious book with present day doctrine and application, these things would not even have to be taught. These are merely tools to help remove our interests from the text until the appropriate time.

  • CONTRIBUTING FACTORS

  • CONTRIBUTING FACTORSPeople feel a need to make the text conform to something other than what the text is trying to say• Dormant Presuppositions unknown to the individual• Systematic Theologyo Contradiction with philosophy/theology is treated as a

contradiction within the text, and the text is what gets modified to make the two match.

    • Unvalidated assumptions• Presumption of similarities• Cherry-picking proof texts

OLIVET DISCOURSE TEMPLE DISCOURSEMatthew 24:1-3 (KJV) 1 And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to shew him the buildings of the temple. 2 And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down. 3 And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?

Luke 21:1-6 (KJV) 1 And he looked up, and saw the rich men casting their gifts into the treasury. 2, 3, 4

5 And as some spake of the temple, how it was adorned with goodly stones and gifts, he said, 6 As for these things which ye behold, the days will come, in the which there shall not be left one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.

Matthew 24:29 (KJV) 29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

Luke 21:11-12 (KJV) 11 And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven. 12 But before all these, they shall lay their hands on you, and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues, and into prisons, being brought before kings and rulers for my name's sake.

PARABLE OF THE SOWER EXPLANATION (MATTHEW) PARABLE OF THE SOWER EXPLANATION (LUKE)

    Matthew 13:37-38 (KJV) 37 He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man; 38 The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one;

Luke 8:11-12 (KJV) 11 Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. 12 Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.

Matthew 25:15 (KJV) 15 And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey.

Luke 19:13 (KJV) 13 And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come. Luke 19:16 (KJV) 16 Then came the first, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained ten pounds.

Matthew 25:30 (KJV) 30 And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Luke 19:26 (KJV) 26 For I say unto you, That unto every one which hath shall be given; and from him that hath not, even that he hath shall be taken away from him.

According to the context of all these connected passages, the ones being hardened are always the Jews which are also called “the election” (Rom. 11:28), and the ones receiving mercy are “all.” These passages about “hardening” are never aimed at gentiles. The mere existence of any hardening disproves “total depravity.”

Matthew 13:55-56 (KJV) 55 Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas? 56 And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things?

Matthew 13:55-56 (NSV) 55 Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his cousins, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas? 56 And his cousins, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things?

    MATTHEW 13:55-56

This is modified in defense of the doctrine of the Mediterranean fertility religions that was carried over by Roman Catholicism of the perpetual virginity of the goddess, in this case, Mary. “Cousins” is inserted in place of “brother/sister” with the excuse that the Aramaic language was spoken and didn’t have words that distinguished brothers and sisters from other relatives. However, the NT was written in GREEK. The word “cousin” (συγγενής) is used twice by Luke (1:36, 58) and would have been used by Matthew and Mark had “cousin” been the concept they intended to convey, instead of “brother” (ἀδελφός).

  • All these textual edits, removals and changes trace back to Adamanteus Origen (181-254) of Alexandria Egypt, in North Africa. These corruptions are what became the Catholic line of Bibles which have always been rejected as corrupt by eastern churches, such as Eastern and Greek Orthodox. The protestant Reformation was based largely on a revival of the “received text” (uncorrupted text) in the western church. In 1881, the corruptions were re-popularized to the western church by the research and Greek New Testament of the Heretics Westcott and Hort. It was followed in 1884 by the Revised Version of the New Testament in England, and then the American Standard Version in America in 1901. Ever since then, every major version that has been released (NASB, NIV, RSV, ESV, HCSB, CSB, etc…) have been based on the corrupt Catholic texts. If you have one of those, you have Catholic Bible, minus the Apocrypha, despite its manuscripts containing it. The differences in the English versions of the Bible are not due primarily to translation methodology or accuracy. They are due primarily to the differences in the Greek texts being translated. Today, over 400 readings from the received text have been added back into the NA/M text, 28th Edition. This is akin to a big giant spiritual “I told you so” from those of us who have been using a Bible from the pure text ever since they were produced in English over 400 years ago. However, those readings have not made it back into the English translation that you’re carrying around yet. How’s that for a bait and switch. Perhaps later revisions of your favorite version will have you caught up with the rest of us in the next 15-20 years. Back to the topic at hand. If adding and subtracting words from the text is a major pitfall in Biblical interpretation, consider what a pitfall it is to proper understanding if the words and phrases have already been removed for you before you even get a chance to see the text. Imagine how convenient it is for a Catholic or protestant who believes in infant Baptism to never have to come across Acts 8:37 when reading their NIV or ESV. Regardless of the controversies surrounding the corrupt Bibles, it’s important for the student of the Word of God to be informedof these things, and to know WHAT it is that he’s translating. Ignorance of these matters hurts the effectiveness of the interpretive process and the resultant application.

  • INTERPRETATION PITFALS

    • ADDING to scripture• Traditions, Apocrypha, Talmud, etc…• Words, phrases

    • SUBTRACTING from scripture• Nullifying passages that are upsetting or uncomfortable for people in your

    social circles

    • Words, phrases• REMOVING any passage from its context.• Interpreting LITERAL passages as figurative.• Interpreting FIGURATIVE passages as literal.• FAILURE TO ABIDE BY THE LIGHT YOU HAVE.

  • REVIEW• Textual Revision Started with Eve’s response to Satan’s questioning of the

word of God• Do not assume theology understands the nature of God or reality in

principle and that we just have to fill in small gaps• Psychological experimentation shows that people are prone to and good at

producing post-hoc justifications for their presuppositions• Adding/subtracting words/context is a good indicator that the individual is

following something other than scripture• The Inductive method helps individuals expose and eliminate intuitive

presuppositions• Several factors contribute to the post-hoc justification process• Textual Examples• Some versions come with pre-omissions build in ahead of time, student
