Foundation has placed in our ability to provide meaningful, educational experiences to high-potential, low-income CMS students.”

Our goal for the summer of 2014 is to send 90 stu-dents to camp. Please continue to invest in BICF so that we can continue to provide enriching ex-periences for more and more students.

In the summer of 2013, the Bruce Irons Camp Fund (“BICF”) sent a new high of 82 deserving students to residen-tial summer camp experi-ences, up from 67 the summer before. These low-income, high potential CMS students benefit greatly from the five consecutive years of summer camp.

“Camp is a fun place — there is no bullying, and everybody is nice,” said Juakeem L., a third-year Camp Celo camper. “I feel at home there.”

“I had a really great time at UNCC,” said Mercedes J., a fourth-year camper. “It was cool to have a college-like experience.”

Parents see the value of the BICF experience, too:

“Since going to camp, my daughter has shown more maturity and excitement about school,” said the mother of Tiyanna S., a

fourth-year camper. “She knows she will need to keep focused in school to stay on a path to a four-year college.”

We are able to influence stu-dents like Juakeem, Mercedes, and Tiyanna thanks to BICF volunteers, donors and sup-porters.

This past year, we raised a record $213,000, beat-ing our fundraising goal by over $25,000, in part due to two grants from the Charlotte Mecklen-burg Community Founda-tion.

For the fourth year in a row, we received gener-ous funding from The Leon Levine Foundation (“TLLF”). This year, TLLF gave us a $25,000 match-ing grant which, thanks to

our donors, we met in under three months.

“We are so grateful to the Levine Foundation for its on-going and generous support,” said Jonathan Liles, BICF Board Presi-dent. “We appreciate the confidence the Levine

BICF honors dedicated leader, Holly Levinson

At the annual BICF camp kick-off party this past May, Holly Levinson scanned the crowded room and smiled, thinking back to the very first kick-off party. It was not many years ago that a small collection of campers and families gathered for the cele-bration in her backyard. Holly recalled the revelation she had that day, saying, “This is why I’m doing this. Here are these families--they’re so excited for their kids--coming to my house, being welcomed.”

The dramatic growth in num-bers of BICF campers is due in large part to the efforts of Holly, who became involved with the organization in 2001 as a self-deemed “make-shift volunteer” and has nurtured it, energetically diving into role after role through the years. It began at Eastover Elementary when Aliyah, the fourth grade student Holly was mentoring, was selected as the recipient of the Bruce Irons Scholarship that summer. Holly had never heard of the organization but volunteered to help Aliyah pre-pare for camp. Throughout the coming year, she brought Ali-yah to various follow-up events that BICF hosted, becoming more familiar with the nature and vision of the organization.

Sold on the BICF mission, Holly served in numerous volunteer

positions in the organization over the next eight years, cul-minating in her role as Board President from 2009-2011. This past September, Holly fin-ished her term on the board as Past President.

“There’s probably about 100 reasons I was kept here for nine years. One of them was just the incredible opportunity the BICF provides to these stu-dents, and the eye-opening experience that these kids have that they never would have had if it weren’t for the organi-zation. I also have a huge love for our state and its environ-mental beauty, and teaching children from the inner city and letting them experience the beauty of the North Carolina mountains is something that keeps you coming back year after year.”

Dr. Edie Irons, Bruce’s wife and BICF founder, recognizes Holly’s significance to the organization. “Holly brought so many gifts to the BICF: her organizational abilities, her keen intellect, her can-do spirit....well, if you know Holly, you know there is not enough space to enumerate all she has brought to the BICF,” Irons said. “Suffice it to say that without her and her vision and her energy, as well as all her friends that she has talked into joining the board, we would

never be where we are to-day.”

Holly promises she’s not go-ing far. “Even though I’m going off the board, I still plan to be involved on the Camp Committee as a volun-teer,” she said. “I still plan to mentor and be involved in planning the activities for the kids and driving kids to camp.”

In recognition of Holly’s many years of passionate service to the BICF, the board of directors recently voted to designate 5th year graduat-ing campers going forward as “Holly Levinson Scholars.”

We are grateful to Holly for all she has done for the BICF! Article written by Hannah Bridges, BICF summer intern

This September, the BICF was pleased to welcome Sharon Berenfeld, MD, to the board of directors. Sharon is a medically retired Internal Medicine Physician. She has two teenage boys and worked as a camp physician for two summers while her kids

attended summer camp. “I have seen first-hand how campers grow and learn at sleep away camp. They go from being a little homesick to not ever want-ing to leave camp!” Sharon has served the past two years as a BICF mentor. “I have met some wonderful people and

fell in love with the kids. With the BICF, I absolutely love the idea of kids earning the opportunity to go to sleep away camp because of their good grades and good citizenship.” The board welcomes Sharon to the BICF team!

Assisting families with camp paper-work and medical appointments, outfitting students for camp, trans-porting students to and from camp, and mentoring students throughout the school year — these are some of the many gifts of time and en-ergy offered by our committed vol-unteers.

Next summer, as we work to send 90 kids to camp, we’ll need a few extra helping hands. Please con-sider joining us as a mentor – it’s a lot of fun and very rewarding. Just call the BICF office at 980-355-0803, or email Executive Director Mollie James at [email protected]. Special thanks to our 2013 camper mentors/volunteers: Erin Ashendorf Jill Balick Lucy Basora

New mentor perspectives...in their own words Elizabeth Bridges, mentor to Anthony S.: “Anthony was very quiet and sweet as his mother Cheryl and I drove him to Gwynn Valley this past July. Our families had enjoyed dinner together earlier in the summer, and Anthony was delightful, talkative, and very excited about camp as we sat in the backyard. Now, as he sat quietly in the back seat, I knew he was feeling all the same things I felt as a child on my way to camp. We drove through the beautiful mountains on a bright sum-mer morning, and Anthony became more talkative with each new view. The counselors and staff at Gwynn Valley greet campers with an enthusiasm that is palpable and contagious. Within the first twenty minutes, Anthony had all but for-gotten any concerns he had about camp. We helped him unpack and make his bed as he and his counselors became ac-quainted. We said our good-byes and walked back to the car, listening as nerv-ous laughter turned into joyful noise. Two weeks later, Anthony ran from the cabin and jumped into Cheryl’s arms, full of stories and that odd feeling of wanting to go home, but not wanting to leave.

We had the pleasure of bringing two other campers back to Charlotte, and the car was filled with laughter and banter the whole way. Anthony, Cheryl, and I are already looking forward to next year’s adventures.” Jeff Stockdale, mentor to Nyquan M.: “Nyquan is a sharp young man with a positive outlook on life. He enjoys sports, so we’ll go to the park to play. We’ve made up a couple of games that combine basketball, football and soccer. We made up a rule during a basketball game of horse that whenever someone got a letter, they’d have to immediately run and catch a football pass before get-ting another basketball shot. We also hone our math skills while practicing free throws because we made up a rule that you have to announce your shooting per-centage after each shot. I also had the pleasure of driving Nyquan and another kid to and from camp this summer. On the way there we played Suitcase, I Spy, 20 Questions, and a few other games. On the way back we talked about camp. Whatever we do, we have fun doing it. I feel fortunate to be able to be a mentor with the BICF.”

“At camp, I learned how to make friendship bracelets and harvest vege-tables. The skill I most improved on was my drawing. I drew a really pretty blue bird!”

Weekend swimming and hiking outings a hit with campers

Page 7

JCC donates use of pool for Saturday swim lessons

BICF campers explore Reedy Creek Nature Preserve

On Saturday, October 12th, 17 BICF campers experienced a day at the Reedy Creek Nature Preserve. After enjoying a delicious picnic lunch provided by a women’s circle from Myers Park Baptist Church, board member Pam Menaker led the stu-dents and chaperones in team-building and self-awareness exer-cises that had everyone twisted in

knots and trying to squeeze every-one on a small tarp (a.k.a. “life boat”). Pam missed her calling as a camp director! Next, we proceeded into the Nature Center for a wildlife presentation by one of the educators at the Nature Preserve. The students learned about animals native to the area and their habitat and got to touch a box turtle, a deer pelt, and a non-venomous snake. A few of us just chose to look and not touch! Our assigned educator then took the group on a nature walk where we observed trees and leaves – we even got to taste the leaf of the sourwood tree. It is as it sounds…sour! Generous BICF donors make enrich-ment outings like this possible. We are grateful for your support.

One of the best parts of the summer camp experience for BICF campers is the opportunity to swim in mountain lakes and streams, cold though they may be. Unfortunately, most BICF campers enter the program not know-ing how to swim, or at least not being confident swimmers.

This year, thanks to the generosity of the Levine Jewish Community Center (“JCC”), the BICF offered free swim-ming lessons to its 5th and 6th grade campers on three Saturdays during the winter months. The lessons al-lowed campers to hone their swim-ming skills and gain a little confidence before the summer camp season be-gan.

BICF board member and mentor, Matt Tugwell, drove two campers to swim lessons one Saturday and tells of the experience: “Neither boy knew how to swim, and they were a little scared

to hop in the water. The teachers took turns getting the kids to float and kick while the kids in line just got comfort-able in the water and played. The best part of the afternoon was when the kids lined up on the diving board. A full crowd cheered them on to jump in the deep end near an instructor. One of the boys was just shaking. The instruc-tor and I talked him into walking out on the board, and he sat down and eased his way into the water, to loud ap-plause from the crowd. Three minutes later he was jumping, spinning, smiling, and high-fiving his friends. It was great to see these kids grow and mature in a matter of hours.”

Many thanks to the BICF board mem-bers and mentors who chaperoned the swim lessons and drove campers to and from the JCC. The JCC has gra-ciously offered to host our campers again for swim lessons in early 2014.
