The celebration is called Rhythmfest and it takes place this Saturday August 6th from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., at Heritage Park. “Last year at the inaugural Rhythmfest, we experienced an incredible amount of positive feedback from a variety of event attendees, vendors and performers about how wonderful it is to have an event that allows all participants to perform and get involved. We are so excited to give this year’s event attendees an opportunity to help us make world history by hosting the World’s largest hand drum ensemble!” says Amanda Dyke, Community Events Assistant for the City of Barrie. Rhythmfest commemorates how music connects us together. It’s Barrie’s second annual and only truly interactive festival and will feature performances and workshops where audiences, young and old, are encouraged to participate. Being that interactivity is a central theme; participants will be able to join in the fun in a variety of ways. So, don’t hesitate, tune your instrument and bring it along to the event. Here’s what’s on the schedule: Stage Performances Performances begin on the main stage at 10 a.m. with an opening ceremony and performances by: • Native women hand drummers; • Beyond Sound, a collaboration of young artists and drummers from Ballet Creole, COBA, and Ngoma; • Baque de Bamba performing the electrifying Brazilian Maracatu; • The drum fusion experience of Nigel Maynard; • Barrie’s very own songwriter and professional drummer, Omar Gittens performing with his trio band, and so much more. Workshops In addition to enjoying the musical performances, you’ll get the chance to learn a few groovy tricks that include: • Learning salsa, meringue, regueton and more with the talented Amaru Mendez; • Tuning the Djembe, an African drum, with Saikou Saho; • Tap dancing with choreographer, musician and tap dancer, Allison Toffan, and more. Just For The Young Of course young ears will love all parts of the festival, but they will especially appreciate the Please and Thanks segment, where various issues that children face daily are expressed in a playful hip-hop beat-box style. Creating a World Record This year, CRS Barrie is sponsoring a very special record breaking event. We will be attempting to beat the Guinness World Record for largest hand drum ensemble. Bring your drum and help us make history! Special Tribute To Fred Johnson Join us as we pay special tribute to Fred Johnson. Fred has had a long and seemingly endless involvement with rudimental drumming and Drum & Bugle Corps in Canada and the USA since he started drumming for the 180th Air Cadets (York Lions) in Toronto in 1946. He won the Canadian Junior Individual Drumming Championship for three consecutive years and has been inducted into the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame, the first Canadian drummer to receive this honour. In 1997 he founded CADRE (Canadian Associates Drumming Rudimental Excellence), which is dedicated to preserving traditional drumming and promoting contemporary rudimental excellence. Fred continues drumming to this day as a teacher, consultant, author, lecturer, clinician, historian, and performer. Finally, the festival wraps-up this music spectacular with an interactive jam where all of you are invited to grab your instrument and voices and jump in on the fun. So mark your calendars, shine your dancing shoes and join Barrie at its grooviest festival this Saturday! For more information visit the Arts, Culture & Tourism section of www.barrie.ca.
