[History: “By the early 1930s, Mennonites were moving from rural areas to Vancouver. The leadership of the Conference of Mennonites in Canada sent Elder Jacob H. Janzen from Ontario to Vancouver in 1935 to help organize a Mennonite congregation in the city. Jacob and his wife Elisabeth also helped to establish the Mary Martha Girls’ Home to assist young Mennonite women who had been sent to the city to earn income for their families. … By the end of the 1940s circumstances produced a total change. World War II ended and jobs were plentiful. Hundreds of Mennonite immigrants came to BC and many worked in Vancouver and the church filled up. … From 95 members in 1950 the membership grew to exceed 500 members in the 1960s-70s. … With many young people leaving the city for the suburbs, membership has declined in recent years.” --from article on GAMEO]

[History: “Sherbrooke Mennonite originated through church planting by Vancouver First United Mennonite. In the early years the congregation was made up of many immigrants from the Soviet Union, Germany, and South America. Immigration, primarily from South America, continued through the 1970s and contributed to growth. … Services were initially all in German. In 1973 separate German and English language services were introduced. This lasted until 2010, when keeping a German service was no longer feasible. … By the 1990s the congregation experienced a decline due to the movement of retired members and younger families. Many of Sherbrooke’s remaining members have moved further away, making the church more a drive-in than a community church.” --from article on GAMEO]

[History: “In 1837, a small white brick meetinghouse was built at the corner of Beaverdale and Maple Grove Roads on land donated to the ‘Mennonist Society’ by Henry Wanner, Jr. Worship services alternated among Wanner, Hagey (Preston) and Cressman (Breslau) until the 1890s. In 1938 a new church replaced the 1837 meetinghouse. In 1838, David Sherk and John Bear, both advocates of the Sunday School, were ordained. Thus, in 1840, the earliest Mennonite Sunday School in North America was begun and held alternately at Wanner and Preston. It was discontinued in 1841 because of opposition. In the following decades there was a division between the ‘narrow-minded’ and the ‘free-thinkers’ with issues of revivalism, Sunday School, evening prayer meetings and the temperance movement.” --from article on GAMEO]

[History: “In 1800 four family groups immigrated here from Pennsylvania, and included an ordained deacon, Jacob Bechtel. Joseph Bechtel arrived in 1802 and was ordained as minister in 1804. This group met in homes or barns until 1814 when they built a union or free house meetinghouse. Religious groups other than the Church of England were not allowed to build places of worship in Upper Canada until 1828. Thus, before this time community meetinghouses were available to everyone. Because of disagreements in the early 1820s, the Anabaptists were locked out of this building by another group using the same facility. In 1824, the Bechtel group relocated and built a new union meetinghouse. In 1842 this group became formally organized when a red brick meetinghouse was built just up the road beside the already established cemetery. By 1848 this congregation became known as Hageys, since two of its spiritual leaders were Jacob and Joseph Hagey. In 1840 the first Mennonite Sunday School in North America was organized at Hagey Mennonite, but it closed after a few years due to conservative opposition. … The Hagey church was renovated in 1896, and after a fire in 1950. In 1954, after a second fire, a new church was built at the present location and it was renamed Preston Mennonite Church.” --from article on GAMEO]

[History: “Stirling Avenue Mennonite Church formally organized in August 1924 with 115 members. The first building, constructed on the same block as First Mennonite, was occupied in February 1925. Urias K. Weber, who had been a pastor at First Mennonite for 17 years, became the leader of the new, more liberal group that separated from First, primarily over a dispute involving the traditional dress code for women. Both congregations, now within the same conferences, have worked cooperatively for many years. During its years as an independent congregation, Stirling occupied a unique position in the Mennonite mosaic. Sometimes at odds with other Mennonite churches, it acted as a catalyst for change within the community. Barred from conference affiliation in 1924, Stirling remained an independent Mennonite church until 1940 when it affiliated briefly with the Eastern District Conference of the General Conference Mennonite Church.” --from article on GAMEO]

Declaration of theMarginal Mennonite Society

We are Marginal Mennonites, and we’re not ashamed. We’re marginal because no self-respecting Mennonite

organization would have us. (Not that we care about no stinkin’ respect anyway.)We reject religious creeds and doctrines, because they’re man-made, created for the purpose of excluding people.

Their primary function is to determine who’s in and who’s out.We are inclusive. There are no membership dues or fees. No litmus test of beliefs. (Even the assertions in this

Declaration can be disregarded.) The only requirement for membership is the desire to identify as Marginal Mennonite. We don’t even care if you were ever Mennonite or not. We have no protocol for exclusion.

We are universalists. We believe “hell” is a myth, and that every person who has ever lived gets a seat at the celestial banquet table. No questions asked! (Isaiah 25:6: “On this mountain God will make a feast for ALL peoples.”)

We believe the kingdom of God is a state of being, available here and now, to everybody! (Luke 17:21: “The kingdom of God will not be said to be over here or over there. In fact, the kingdom is already within you.”)

We see God as Mother as well as Father, a heavenly Parent who cares for her children. (Isaiah 49:15: “Can a woman forget her nursing child? Or show no compassion for the child of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I won’t forget you.”)

We like Jesus. A lot. The real Jesus. The Jewish teacher who was 100% human, and moved around in space and time. The Galilean sage who enjoyed the company of women and children, and was obsessed with the kingdom of God. The wandering wise man who said “Become passersby!” (Gospel of Thomas 42)

We endorse the Sermon on the Mount. Or, rather, the sayings within identified by modern scholarship as most authentic. Especially the ones on the following themes:

1. Nonviolence (Matthew 5:39-40/Luke 6:29/Sayings Gospel Q 6:29);2. Generosity (Matthew 5:42a/Luke 6:30/Sayings Gospel Q 6:30);3. Love (Matthew 5:44/Luke 6:27-28/Sayings Gospel Q 6:27-28);4. Universalism (Matthew 5:45b/Luke 6:35d/Sayings Gospel Q 6:35d);5. Mercy (Matthew 5:48/Luke 6:36/Sayings Gospel Q 6:36);6. Forgiveness (Matthew 6:14-15/Luke 6:37c/Mark 11:25);7. Non-attachment (Matthew 6:19-21/Luke 12:33-34/Sayings Gospel Q 12:33-34/Gospel of Thomas 76:3);8. Freedom from anxiety (Matthew 6:25-30/Luke 12:22-28/Sayings Gospel Q 12:22-28/Gospel of Thomas 36:1-2);9. Non-judgment (Matthew 7:3-5/Luke 6:41-42/Sayings Gospel Q 6:41-42/Gospel of Thomas 26:1-2);10. Compassion (Matthew 7:9-11/Luke 11:11-13/Sayings Gospel Q 11:11-13).

We reject missionary activity. We think the world would be a poorer place if all Buddhists, for example, were

converted to Christianity. Thus, we oppose evangelistic crusades and mission boards, no matter how well-meaning they claim to be. (Matthew 23:15: “Woe to you scribes & pharisees, hypocrites! You scour land and sea to make a single convert. And when you do, you make that person more a child of Gehenna than you are.”)

We are humanists. We believe in art, evolution, relativity, synchronicity, serendipity, the scientific method, and putty tats. We value irreverence, outrageousness, and a strong cup of tea.

We strive to animate the spirits of Hans Denck (d.1527), George Fox (d.1691), Alexander Mack (d.1735), Sojourner Truth (d.1883), Leo Tolstoy (d.1910), Jeannette Rankin (d.1973), Dorothy Day (d.1980), Bayard Rustin (d.1987), and Cesar Chavez (d.1993), among others.

We are weirdly drawn to the example of 12 unknown anabaptists who ran through the streets of Amsterdam in the nude in 1535. We love our naked selves.

We don’t want to take ourselves too seriously.
