Thirty five employers from all
sectors across Belfast attended
our ‘Employer Breakfast Morn-
ing’ on Friday 7th of August in
Impact Training.
The event was organised to
make employers aware of our
new and exciting ‘Integrated
Employment Programme’ (IEP)
for West Belfast & Greater
Shankill.
Over the coming two years we
will be delivering on the
following:
200 Full Time equivalent jobs
at National Minimum Wage
(fully funded by our
consortium)
£400,000 worth of pre-
employment and flexible
training to help 'out of work'
clients to train and progress
into the labour market.
Speaking at the event, Gary
McKay (Manager of Impact
Training's Job Assist Centre,)
said: "this initiative has been in
the development stages for over
4 years. With the support of
Greater Shankill and West
Belfast Partnership Boards, it
has came to fruition and we are
very excited to be delivering this
programme within the
communities that need it most."
Special thanks go to Ian Jamison
(Chairperson - Impact Training)
and Jackie Redpath (Chief
Executive - Greater Shankill
Partnership) for their support and
guidance during the
development and tendering
stages and to our consortium
partners, namely Upper
Springfield Development Trust
and Springvale Learning.

Impact Training would like to
thank Jonathan Mills store
manager and his team at the Co-
operative Shankill Road for their
recent help and support to our
Retail/Store learners. Jonathan
and his team worked in
partnership with Impact Training
in delivering a 12 week
programme designed to equip
learners with practical skills in a
real industry environment.
Many of the young people
participating in the programme
had negative attitudes and
perceptions to the working
environment. They lacked
confidence and required support
in a controlled industry setting to
allow development of these
skills.
Throughout the programme
Jonathan and his team
encouraged the young people to
step out of their comfort zone by
following a scheme of work that
was structured and designed to
facilitate their needs and also
meet the demands of a busy
retail environment. This gave the
young people the opportunity to
practice skills and knowledge
and, develop team building and
leadership skills whilst focusing
on the positives and rewards of
the world of work.
At the Co-operative store the
young people participated in a
variety of tasks such as stock
auditing procedures, stock
control, stock rotation, waste and
recycling management, health
safety and security, risk
assessment and application of
store point of sale. All of this was
carried out in an environment
that was not only professional
but very motivating for all
involved.

training had with this programme
we are excited to announce a
newly confirmed partnership with
Odyssey Bowls which will further
develop industry skills and aims
to promote the use of STEM
(Science, Technology, Engineer-
ing and Mathematics) in a
contextualised environment. We
would like to thank Odyssey
Bowls again for their continued
support of our young people and
we are looking forward to
working with them on this
programme.

Issue 8. September 2015 Impact Training – Maximising Potential
Learners hard at work completing delivery process
Many young people benefited
and felt that the programme was
of great value to them with some
saying they would like to work for
the Co-operative in the near
future whilst others gained
confidence in doing tasks they
never thought they would either
do or enjoy. Jonathan Mills,
(store manager) said he was
surprised by the lack of
confidence some of the young
people had at the start of the
programme and together with
their tutor Janet Wilson was
delighted to see the benefits of
the programme with young
people becoming more
motivated and enthusiastic to
sample more and more of the
world of work.
This programme is part of
continuous partnership with the
Co-operative (Shankill Road)
and Impact Training in
developing employment skills
with young people in the
community. Co-operative foods
has already employed numerous
trainees from Impact Training
and we are looking forward to
developing this partnership in the
future.

Headliners UK is a charity which
inspires and encourages the
personal development of young
people through journalism.
Young people are trained to
research and produce stories,
videos and photography for
publication. Malachy Kyle and
Aisling McKeown from the
Belfast centre worked with 4
groups of learners from Impact
Training.
The group completed an OCN in
Diversity which included the
exploration of identity within their
local community and tackled
issues in Northern Ireland
addressing Diversity and
Equality.
Impact trainees receiving their certificates
The young people researched
their own area and through the
art of photography were able to
capture the essence of the
programme. These stills were
then transferred onto canvas and
presented to Impact at an
awards ceremony in the
Spectrum Centre.
All the young people who
participated received their
certificates and Millennium
Volunteer awards. The artwork is
now displayed around the Impact
building, showcasing the positive
contribution the young people
can have on their local
community.

The newly founded Impact Training Football Team was presented with their
new football kit by Lewis Cobain from Modern Office Supplies. We would
like to thank Modern Office Supplies for being our official kit-sponsor
Impact’s football team was founded in 2014 and since
then they have participated in numerous matches
against local teams such as Ainsworth Young Men,
Workforce Training Services, the Hammer and the
Boy’s Model. Our football team made history last
September by participating in the Northern Ireland
Schools Cup for the first time. The team played well
and comprehensively beat St Pius X College
Magherafelt in the first round. In the next round they
came up against a skilful team from CBS (Glen Road)
who came out on top. It was a great experience for the
boys who participated in this Cup and Team Manager
Gemma Traynor said: “I was extremely proud of the
way they conducted themselves and the effort they put
in, both on and off the pitch. We aim to continue our
success with the football team and hopefully progress
further in the Schools Cup this term. All new trainees
are welcome to attend training, which will commence in
September.”
