Sweltering. It seems the most appropriate word to describe the hot summer days we experienced in

late August, when temperatures approached 100 degrees. The difference between 92 and 97 seemed much greater than the

difference be-tween 87 and 92, even though both are fi ve degree increments.

Already, temperatures have begun to moderate, and the shorter days are a reminder that

summers’ heat will soon give way to falls’ temperance. The cooler days of fall will offer new opportunities for vegetable gardeners, and seeds planted in September will be ready to grace the table during the upcoming holiday season.

There are many reasons to garden, chief among them the freshness of the product, the health benefi ts of eating vegetables, the opportunity to share produce with friends and neighbors, and the satisfaction of producing your own food.

If you have not previously gardened, site selection will be your fi rst decision. Choose an area that receives full sun for at least six hours each day. Winter typically is dry, so it will be important to have a water source nearby to facilitate irrigation.

The work of the fall garden starts with the soil. If you have not conducted a soil test recent-ly, it would be a good place to

begin. Soil test kits and instructions for taking samples are available at your county Extension

Offi ce, and the price is only $7. The target pH for most fall vegetables is 6.0 – 6.5, and because pH determines the ability of the plant to take up the nutrients, this is a necessary

was made in Germany by the Royal Bonn Porcelain Company. The company

started business in the 18th cen-tury and continued into the mid-20th century. I think your vase was produced about 100

HOLMES: Water management is essential to get seeds or transplants established

fi rst step in determining what fertilizer products need to be added to the soil. Remember, the Extension Offi ce also receives a copy of your results, so call if you have questions.

Seedbed preparation is another critical step . Disease issues are not as great a concern for fall crops, so it won’t be necessary to create small hills or bedded rows in which to plant your seeds. Soils must be well drained, but there is no need to create hills between rows for these crops. Plant into a level surface that has been tilled and raked to result in a fi ne-textured, consistent seed bed. Leave enough space between rows to allow access to plants and to account for future growth, typically 30 to 36 inches. Many winter garden plant seeds are small — broccoli, kale, carrots, etc. Plant these about one-quarter of an inch deep. Larger seeds, such as bean seeds, should be planted an inch deep. If you have excess grass that has accrued from your late summer cuttings, this makes good mulch between rows. During late July and August, when grass must be cut every few days, I have found it useful to stockpile excess clip-pings to use as mulch in the fall garden. This reduces thatch in the lawn, while providing good mulch for the fall garden.

September can be a wet month, particularly if we have tropical storms. Monitor rainfall, but supplement moisture when conditions are dry. A good rule of thumb is to apply about one-third of an inch each day initially, depending on any rain received the day before. Once plants are estab-lished and the cooler days arrive, it will be possible to cut irrigation back to every other day.

In any garden, pests are a consideration. Typical-ly, they are not as great a problem in the fall garden as they are during the spring season. Diseases should be minimal. Weeds are a problem and should be controlled by hand weeding and mulching between rows. Two caterpillar pests — the larval stage of the diamondback moth and the larval stage of the cabbage looper — may appear. Early damage will appear as small holes in the leaves. Dipel dust, a biological insecticide, is a good choice for control of caterpillars, as it targets them without impacting benefi cial insects.

Although I enjoy the variety of produce in the spring garden, the long season of the fall garden combined with the cooler fall days makes this an ideal time to enjoy this hobby. Your family will enjoy produce from your garden through the holiday season and well into the new year.

Q: I read somewhere that the window in the

bathroom is supposed to be safety glass. Is this true? We are replacing our windows this fall, and I’m doing as much research as I can.

A: Yes, all glass that is within 60 inches

vertically from the tub or shower drain must, according to Indiana Codes, be tempered glass. You can check with your local or state building authority, but it’s really a safety issue.

If a person were in a tub where they could slip or lose their balance and their hand or arm hit the glass, a standard plate-glass window or door could cut through fl esh and bone. On the other hand, tempered glass will break under stress, but the glass shatters into tiny

pieces like the windshield of a car.

I remem-ber back in the late 1970s, a company I owned had to sell all

the standard glass shower doors we had in stock and replace them with either plastic doors or tempered glass doors. This means the code has been with us for a long time, and the oldest code book I own that refers to tempered glass is a 1975 edition of the “One and Two Family Dwelling Code.” While replacing your windows, you also should check your home for larger panes of glass that a person could accidentally fall against, or the glass could be hit by a door or

other object. These are considered “hazardous locations,” requiring tempered glass. I found a few more locations while researching the 2003 edition of the “Interna-tional Residential Code.”

A window must be tempered glass if all of the following criteria are met: more than 9 square feet in one single piece of glass that is 18 inches or less from the fl oor and the top of the glass is greater than 36 inches above the fl oor and has a 36-inch walk-way on either side of the glass. Hazardous loca-tions include entry and exit doors, sidelights within 24 inches of the door, storm doors, sliding doors, unframed swing-ing doors, French doors, tub and shower doors, glass enclosures for a pool, whirlpools, saunas, hot tubs, mirrored glass in

a swinging or bi-fold closet door and windows next to a stair or landing. There are more unusual areas needing tempered glass, so it pays to do the research. Tempered glass can be determined by a permanent mark that is placed in the glazing by the manufacturer by acid etching, sandblasting, ceramic-fi red, embossed mark, or any type of marking that cannot be removed without destroy-ing the product.

$16.5 million.The Spanish-style house,

built in 1928, has an arched porte-cochere, a swimming pool surround-ed by a wide wooden deck and a tennis court on close

I used to be a slave to my outdoor cushions, pulling them in whenever it stormed so they didn’t get soaked. It’s not that I liked high-maintenance outdoor cushions. It’s just that, at the

time, I didn’t like the look of outdoor fabrics, so I upholstered my cushions in formal fabric. All that’s changed now! The makers of outdoor fabric saw the light, and today they are

milling gorgeous fabrics that are soft on the eyes and the touch, every bit as beautiful as those you’d have in your home.

My screened porch is my oasis. I use indoor furniture on the porch because it’s protected from rain and sun. For my seat cushions, I picked a simple ticking that goes with every-thing so that I can change out my pillows seasonally. For fall, I tossed in a sublime orange toile. REPLACE THE SPENT SUMMER FLOWERS WITH FALL DISPLAYS: By the end of

summer, the fl owers start to look kind of leggy and spent of blooms. To get your patio ready for fall, pull out all the raggedy fl owers and put them in the compost. Then, replace them with simple but stunning fall displays.

Here’s one of my favorite ■

treatments: Rest a pumpkin on top of a large planter, then press in a metal monogram (they come with prongs on the back that secure them to the pumpkin).

For another fun treatment, just ■

top a planter with a riser of some sort, plop on a pumpkin, then ensconce the treatment with a wire orb. Thread in some bittersweet or other fall vine, and, boom, you have a killer treatment in minutes. ADD FALL FLOURISHES IN STRATEGIC SPOTS: The beauty of seasonal decorating is you can do as much or as little as you want. In my

home, I just add some lovely fall displays in a few key spots, and the house feels remade for fall. The same is true for your outdoor rooms.

doors where you could add a touch of fall? One of mine is a big wooden hutch that stands year-round on my covered porch. Here, I used three simple tools to give it a fall feel: gourds dotted into the existing display, petite bouquets of fresh fl owers and a spray of faux fall foliage on top.
